    Black isn't a colour.

    • Scientifically perhaps but from an artistic perspective — In the context of pigments and art, black is considered a colour with the use of black pigments to create shades.

      • -4

        to create shades.

        shades are not colours.

        • +1

Look who's throwing shade now 😋

        • Shades are created by adding black to a pure colour (hue), resulting in a darker version of the original colour.

            @00:

by adding black to a pure colour (hue), resulting in a darker version of the original colour.

Therefore black is not a colour, it just makes things darker, like how white makes things lighter

Beginners can just get the barista express for a little extra.

      What about Experts ?

      • "Regularly recommended machine for beginners," Don't ask me!

    • +1

Yep fair point. I went for this to pair with a separate grinder as I've heard they're more important than the machine, but for some people it might not be worth the extra money/hassle.

      • Yea I went that way also, then the bambino died, and I could either get a new bambino, or a barista express. Two plugs annoyed me anyway. Sold the grinder.

    • +1

How long is heat up and no auto milq though.

      • 3 seconds I think and it does a great job on the milk

    • +4

Bambino + SGP > Barista Express

      Always separate components

      • -1

Why though? It's more expensive to get separate components, two machines, two plugs. Barista express are very reliable.

        • +2

Barista express is limited by it's grinder. In fact, almost any espresso machine is. Not uncommon for someone to get a Bambino plus and spend 5x that on a grinder. Barista express is fine for a beginner that won't go down the coffee rabbit hole, but not ideal if you want an upgrade path.

          two plugs

Shocks me how many people say this, just use a double adaptor…

          • @iMagoo: Literally said for beginners.

            • @onlinepred: I think it's important to distinguish beginners who won't go chasing coffee as a hobby, and beginners who are going to go down the rabbit hole.

              • @iMagoo: If you do go chasing the hobby, you can but a seperate grinder, no one is stopping you. And as most won’t, they will still have a great machine.

        • +1

BES870 is a great value package, and one of the best options until one hits a $1000 budget for machine + grinder but the built-in grinder really lets it down, bottom tier burr grinder.

        • SGP is the lowest tier of grinder I would consider usable for espresso, and the Barista Express' grinder is a step below that. It's mostly OK for dark roasts, but really can't go fine enough for light and even medium roast. The fine tuning & adjustibility just isn't there.

It's also handy to have separate components if one isn't usable. You can always get a bag of pre-ground, or use a hand grinder if your grinder's out of action, or use the stove top or aeropress if the coffee machine's down.

And with integrated machines if something fails, you kind of have to replace everything - Barista Express has common issues with solenoids and grinders - and Breville are just terrible with spare parts. Even with the more premium brands they've taken over recently they've dropped about 1/3 of total part availability.

          • @wintermadness: But this makes no sense. Off the grinder dies, then but another grinder? It’s the cost of the bambino…..
I said beginner….. like someone that wants to try making coffee at home. Not someone that wants to dedicate huge amounts of time and effort getting the perfect shot from a certain blend.

Good machine, but it has one infuriating 'feature'. After 200 extractions it will lock you out of using any function except a compulsory clean (which takes 5 minutes or so). When will it reach 200 extractions? There's no counter or anything. So you'll never know until it happens, and this will usually be just after you've pulled a shot and want to use the milk frother to finish off the coffee. By the time the 5 minute clean is finished your shot is cold.

    • +3

I’m able to override the clean feature on mine by pressing the one shot button, so I can finish making my coffee and clean the machine at a more convenient time.

      • +1

I second this. Just press any of the 3 buttons and continue on…

      • +2

The descaling clean can be skipped but not the back flush cycle clean after 200 shots (with the Plus version).

I run this manually every 2 to 3 weeks to avoid the lockout.

        • How old is your machine? Mine's 5 yrs. I wonder if it's a new restriction coz I can skip both (descaling and backflush).

        • How many coffees are you making a day to fear getting locked out after 2 weeks?!?

          • +1

@dontpanic: Only 2 per day but each coffee i pull 3 shots. 1 to warm the group head and portafilter, 1 for the coffee shot itself, and 1 for a quick flush after. They all count towards the limit so I play it safe and run just the cycle every 3 weeks.

            • @antkappa: That'll do it I guess.

Here I was thinking you were drinking 10 coffees a day lol

I do the shot to warm the group head, but I don't bother cleaning - that's what the next warming the group head shot is for…

      • As Antkappa says, I'm talking about the back flush clean. I have found no way to skip this, and even asked Breville support who also said there was no way to skip it.

Mine is 4 years old, so if they've fixed this in the newer versions then that's a big improvement.

    • What is a back flush?

.. After pulling these apart… I'm guessing that means blocking the Portafilter and forcing water to go straight out the OPV- Over pressure valve?

    • +1

When this happens, I turn the machine off at the powerpoint, turn it back on and it allows you to then do the milk.
Then if I'm lazy it happens a couple more times…

Breville Australia post up "remanufactured" machines on their eBay site with 12 months warranty. About once a month, a 15/17% off eBay coupon will be active for it => ~$370.
I bought a Barista Express for a family member. Had a bit of scale in the boiler, otherwise could have been mistaken for a new machine - looks brand new.

IMO this is a better deal, save the extra $130 and put it towards a good grinder like a Eureka Mignon or DF54.

    • +1

Exactly what I did. One of Breville's refurbished Bambino Plus from Ebay and a DF54. Very happy with the pairing so far.

  • +1

Bought mine from TGG Commercial 3 years ago almost to the day for $100 less than this and hasn’t missed a beat. Awesome little machine.

    • Mine's 5 yrs now. Got it for $364~ back then.

    • +1

The quality of coffee you get for the ease of use is unmatched (once you dial in your grind). If it were any simpler to use it would be a Nespresso.

  • +1

I'm pretty sure its been this price on amazon for the last like 4 months

    • +1

Had a 3camels alert on it yesterday, must have been the massive drop from $499 to $497 that triggered it 😂

For those who have naked/bottomless portafilters or the Breville portafilter but with the plastic guard removed, Pesado is having a 50% sale on their Filter Basket.

Shipping is $10 bucks though — to my NSW address that is.

  • Is this a significant upgrade from the Dedica in terms of quality of coffee? Been using the Dedica for a few years now and am considering an upgrade on a tight budget.

    • same here.. what was your decision on this? was it any good from Delica to breville?
