I have one of these and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone really. Had constant issues with the double shot basket and it not being able to even pour a double shot.

There is also a manufacturing issue it seems where the waste pipe isn’t exactly in line with the drip tray, so any time it’s used (back flushing, cleaning cycles etc) you’ll get a soaked counter top.

    • +10

Agreed with the soaked counter comment. It's one of the main reasons why I updated to the Breville Dual boiler.

Outside of this one particular thing, I had an amazing experience with the Bambino Plus. Granted, I swapped out the default double shot basket for a precision basket, so I didn't run into the issues you faced.

      • Yes, as soon as I switched to the regular basket (apparently all current models also come with this) then my problems disappeared.

I think that your soaked counter top, perhaps might have been due to the same issue I experienced…. 😅

      • the Dual Boiler is such a great espresso machine, love mine.

    • +4

I remember thinking that there was an issue… Then I realised that I hadn't put the empty container under the group head AND the wand! Took me ages to figure out that this simple thing was the cause of the flooded kitchen top…!!!

    • +10

The wet counter is annoying, but it's a minor issue during a cleaning cycle every 200 cups. Just put a tea towel or cloth around the machine and it'll contain any overflow.

The rest of the time it works flawlessly and creates great coffee with minimal effort required. It's the closest thing you can get to Nespresso level ease, but with decent coffee.

    • +2

Not sure which double shot basket you had, I swapped to a non-pressurised one and don't have a problem with it.

Also yeah, water does leak during cleaning a bit, but I wouldn't say it soaks my counter. Give it a bit of a wipe and it's good to go again.

So I'd recommend it, especially at that price these days. Seems like a bargain.

What do you mean by this? I haven’t experienced any issues like this, and I haven’t read about people having this issue before

    • +1

Great machine and agree on the soaking of the counter headache. Minor issue for me that's every cleaning cycle for the compact size for whoever is in the market for a coffee machine. Recommend a grinder on the side and aftermarket/OEM double shot basket(single wall) for a great cup of coffee. Probably can also get away using half a tablet of cleaner but depends on how much cups the machine goes through. Always left with small chunks of broken tablet pieces after the cleaning cycle. Aftermarket tablets are fairly cheap also so minor issue. For me its just one cup a working day.

      • Can anyone recommend a good aftermarket basket? I've had my Bambino Plus for many years now and it's been great with the regular cleaning cycles etc. Been meaning to get a nice basket for a while now.

        • I'm using the baskets from MHW-3Bomber. I also have/had the VST baskets but never really enjoyed using them

        • Pesado vst
But lance said Breville stock baskets are as high quality as 3rd party ones such as vst/Pullman/ims so unless U need a basket of diff size, prob don't need to upgrade

          • @chew_chew: Sorry what I meant was portafilter. That's what you're supposed to replace for the Bambino, right?

            • @gryphondarks: I was referring to the basket that sits inside the portafilter, where U put coffee ground into :)

            • @gryphondarks: For the portafilter, stock one feels flimsy and has a weird plastic on the bottom, doesn't feel great in the hand.
U can upgrade to a nicer spouted portafilter or a bottomless, but won't make a diff to shot quality

              • +1

@chew_chew: A bottomless portafilter can make it easier to dial in your shot.

The easier cleaning with one is a definite improvement.

        • I used an IMS Big Bang 20gm basket with my Bambino Plus and it worked great.
18-19gm of properly ground dark roast, always got a good coffee.

        • If ur after a naked portafilter, I use the pesado one which I highly recommend. Bit pricey but great build quality and I really enjoy using it daily

Baskets wise, stock Breville ones are good and no need to replace unless U need diff sizes. I have 18/20g vst baskets from pesado and also a HE basket (18-20g) from pesado.

Perhaps you need to reconsider your grind and tamp techniques for the doubleshot.

      Not an issue.

Sitting here right now with a coffee from 1 which had probably made over +3500th. Had mine since Jan 2020. Use it for 1-4 coffees a day and still runs like it did when I got it.

Firstly, cleaning rant - I get the counter overflow when cleaning. I feel like Breville messed this up and just gave up after they realised they already sent the instructions to the printers. I assume they initially planned to have the cleaning cycle run waste via the head / steam wand but then changed their mind to get fancy and have it cycle back into the drip tray without consideration that the tray is not large enough. In the instructions (my 2019 and still in current) it say to put a 2ltr container on the tray. WHY? Hardly anything comes out steam wand and on cleaning the basket has a silicone insert for the tab and nothing comes out there. Majority goes to drip tray which is nowhere near big enough. Additionally, the tabs feel like they do nothing, or are at least only 90% utilised.

That said, still rank it as once of the best purchases we made for the house, especially as it was just before covid.

      Few other thoughts:
      - Get a single wall double basket (Think the new ones come with by default)
      - Remove the plastic channel system in the bottom of the portafilter. It's messier but better coffee.
      - Get a distributor / tamper. If you're buying this machine you're likely looking for a balance of lazy vs decent coffee. This tool is your friend for that as no need to worry about level and pressure once dialed in.
      - Cleaning cycle bypass. I can easily bypass mine. Newer machines don't seem to be able to. Breville tabs are expensive.
      - Cleaning tablets. Buy the bulk tub of amazon - e.g CAFETTO S15
      - Steam wand cleaning tool - It is on the main machine under the water jug. I didn't see it for 6 months…
      - With minimal practice, manual milk froth is superior in every way apart from effort. Just lift the wand then press steam.

      • I can relate to all of your points and have had exactly the same experience. The only thing id add is to make tamping even easier, buy one that has a lip that sits on the edge of the portafilter (should also be height adjustable).

Edit: I also keep a small jug under the steam wand after milk is propped because the spray (from tip of wand) when purging splashes EVERYWHERE which is incredibly annoying.

As others have commented, outside of the water issue (which IMO is very minor and easily mitigated, definitely not soaking), this machine has worked flawlessly for me for the last three years.

I would recommend it, and at this price it’s almost a no brainer if you’re ok with having a separate grinder.

Was under $150 and not poplar before but this makes to 100+ votes. JB makes it again ;)

      • +2

        Huh?

The cheapest I can see on the page you linked was $319. And that was from 2019. Which being 5 years ago and pre-covid, doesn't seem to make this a bad deal.

    • I've never had this issue and I've had mine for 4 years, used a BBE group handle and stock baskets, has been fine with basic maintenance

    • I'm surprised why it has so many upvotes for such a basic machine with no grinder.

      • +1

Calm down mate the most expensive machines do not come with a built in grinder

        • You're the one that's sounding irate

      • Why is it "basic"?

There is a temp sensor for milk ( if you neef it).

        It preinfuses.

        Many other smarts.

By " basic" do you mean its not an all in one with grinder?

        • Basic like the machine is getting lots of negative feedback and it lacks a grinder so that's an additional expense to go with this apparently sub-par machine

          • @Budju: It's getting minor negative feedback.

It makes great coffee. That's the reason for the upvotes.

          • +1

@Budju: The fact that you think a grinder not being included as part of a coffee machine is a negative and you don't think this machine in particular is actually a very impressively valued machine just shows you know very little about coffee.

Which means you probably shouldn't be nearly as opinionated about the subject as you are

            • -3

@bumluffa: No need to start making assumptions about my knowledge of coffee and getting personal because you can't accept any criticism of this basic entry level machine.

              • @Budju: 😂😂😂

                • @bumluffa: Don't question the coffee machine Daddy, I'm a connoisseur!

          • +1

@Budju: This machine is the first machine in the 'budget' range that has everything, a PID, 3 way valve, decent power steaming, programmable shot length, preinfusion, 9 bar brewing and instant brewing

For this price it makes its flaws seem a little like minor annoyances than critical issues

            • @Paudius: Yeah seems alright I guess. If I was in this budget price range I would personally go for something with an included high quality grinder like the barista express. Can you think of a good reason to pay twice as much for the grinder, take up more bench space and anecdotally have more issues rather than having it simply be included with the machine for an additional circa $130?

              • @Budju: Anecdotally, it doesn't seem like the in-built grinders in Breville machines are 'high quality'… ;)

                • @MonkDog: Compared to a grinder costing twice as much as this machine you mean? Your definition of quality seems to vary wildly to whatever suits your current dig.

                  • @Budju: My current dig?

You're the one who mentioned 'high quality'. You're the one who mentioned 'pay twice as much for the grinder', no one else has. You don't have to look too hard to see people not happy with Breville grinders. And you're the one who seems to think not having a grinder built-in makes the machine 'basic'.

Before I got my current electric grinder, I was using a manual hand grinder, and that didn't take up any bench space at all.

How is my definition of quality changing? I had to clean it on the weekend, and did it leak water? Yes, it leaked a little bit of out the front. Did it 'soak' my bench? No. It wasn't excessive, and no more than what I create cleaning up things in the kitchen at times. I had to descale it yesterday, did it leak? No, it did not.

People complain about Breville grinders not being good at what they are meant to do. Grind coffee.

Does the Bambino Plus make good coffee? Yes.

And I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be that hard to find people not happy with things about a Barista Express in a post about one of those. I don't know anything about those, but a 60 second search showed that it has manual milk frothing. Manual! This basic machine has automatic frothing! So I think your definition of basic needs work.

                    • @MonkDog: Leave him. He's one of those rare breed of people that stick their head in the sand at any exposure to logic that doesn't conform with their opinions… probably a flat-earther 😂😂

              • @Budju: In this range you would buy a hand grinder, an inbuilt grinder has small burr size, bad adjustment and usually really bad clumping

But your preference is quite clear, so you keep to what you would prefer. I have a Mazzer next to my Bambino Plus and it was by far better than my Smart Grinder plus, which is a better version than what's in the Barista Express but same internals

                • -3

@Paudius: Is that what they told you on the forums is it? Clumping? You're a laugh kid.

                  • @Budju: Did you read my post? I had a smart grinder plus, which is the same grinder as in the barista express and it had such bad clumping that it created little coffee grind balls

                    • -3

@Paudius: You must have had a dud machine. Having used many over time, grind balls are generally not a feature.

    • I am almost certain the issue is due to the pressurized basket that comes along with the machine. I bought a double wall basket from Breville's own website which works well.

      • These come with 4 baskets now, single and double wall of single and double shot

  • +1

Showing up as $423.49 for me.

    • Me too using Origin

    • Same here using Westpac

    • +2

My membership is through Australian Retirement Trust, perhaps price differs depending on who you have your membership with

      • Maybe maybe. Still a great post that made this machine buyable for many.

    • TGG commercial is $499.

  • Ordered! Have been keeping an eye out for this and this is a great price, thanks!

  • Damn literally went to the Good Guys to check this out.

Any other ways to get this price?

  • +1

Great machine at a great price!

  • How much is the dual boiler with the business pricing?

    • $1289.56

      • Damn this is a great price. I might buy to resell later when the bdb goes back on sale

    • Waiting for dual boiler to go on discount

  • +3

Other than my annoyance with flooded counter top due to leaking from the machine esp during cleaning cycle, I also dont like the fact that i cant skip cleaning cycle.

Few times my coffee was ready but when I wanted to froth the milk, the cleaning cycle came up so I had to go thru cleaning cycle and my coffee was getting cold!
Same deal when I tried to make coffee in a hurry, but the cleaning cycle came up and didnt allow me to skip.

The manual says it's possible to skip cleaning cycle by pressing the steam button, but didnt work for me.
Does anyone know how to skip the cleaning and descaling cycles?

    • Is that due to overflow or leakage? The drip tray is indeed quite small, prob the only downside of the bambino plus

      • Leakage i believe since i emptied my drip tray each time and when it was leaking , drip tray wasnt full.

Overflow happened too usually during cleaning cycle

        • The drip tray is too small to use during cleaning cycles. I just place a large container under the group head and haven't had any spillage/overflow

    • +1

Same issue here. No way to skip the cleaning cycle, sometimes it happens between pulling a shot and steaming milk
      Extremely annoying

      • +3

I’m always able to skip the cleaning cycle (flashing 1 & 3, followed by 2) by simply pressing 1 or 2 shot.

Not sure if the machines are all the same but it seems fine for me.

        • I think that's the descale cycle.

The cleaning cycle is when the 1 and 2 shot buttons flash (alternating).

I don't think it's possible to skip the cleaning cycle.

        • +1

Yep I skip the cleaning cycle regularly! Just turn it off and back on. It'll keep asking you to do it after you use a machine, so you can't skip it forever, but it's enough to let you finish making a coffee.

    • +1

I try to see it as a bonus. I enjoy an espresso, then have a milky coffee after the cleaning cycle

    • We can skip the descaling cycles, but not the cleaning cycles.

    • +1

I have an older version (purchased 2019), and I can temporarily dismiss these alerts by pressing the steam button - it flashes again next time I turn on the machine. But it seems like the newer machines don't allow this anymore (thumbs down emoji).

I also don't have the leaking issue. I'm guessing they've had to cut some corners during covid or swap in some semi-compatible parts amid all the supply issues.

      • I concur - I bought this straight after it came out. Can skip any of the cleaning or descale cycles. Never had a flooded counter during the cleaning cycles.

Once the black one came out (and maybe a newer stainless version?) it seems the skip option was removed.

First I've heard about flooding though, maybe that happens if using the double walled basket if it doesn't let fluid through or clogged steam wand or something.

        • Same here - bought in 2020 and no issue with skipping the cleaning cycle or flooding.

          Great first espresso machine.

        • I have a black one.

  • I bought one of these more than five years ago. Great machine, didn't have any of those issues mentioned above, but the wand sometimes won't work (since maybe aftee three years of using), partly because we don't clean it often, but paid around the same price (300+) back then too.

  • +1

A good machine for a good price. Have used twice daily for 2 years and is going strong

  • The quality of these machines are average compared to the rest of the Breville coffee machine range.

I would personally spend the extra on a Barista Express if you can accommodate the large space requirement (it's actually not that much bigger).

  • Excellent deal OP. So tempted but will consider a different machine due to the comments here, which is what this place is about. Much appreciated everyone.

  • +1

I had the same issue with water leaking underneath onto the counter top and every day i had to wipe underneath it.

However, it's still a GREAT entry level coffee machine (when paired with a good quality grinder) and I'd recommend it over anything else at that price point. This is also a really good price.

  • Have signed up, but in the interim, if anyone had their price on Barista Touch I'd appreciate it.

  • I've also experienced the wet benchtop after running a cleaning cycle. Even after my machine got sent off for repairs that took nearly 3 months…

    • Bambino plus + dedicated grinder is better value than barista touch.
I have a barista touch and ended up spending extra for a dedicated grinder. But I do get the benefit of a bigger drip tray and a screen

  • Looks a very good price… Close to hitting the buy button. What are the thoughts on the Bambino+ vs the all-in-one machines liken the express impress, pro etc. Does a good quality standalone grinder make the difference?

    • +3

The quality of the grinder is more important than the machine

      • +2

Agree, better off spending money on a quality grinder to pair with bambino plus.

  • +2

Love mine using it daily for almost 2 years, no issues. Though the drip tray capacity is not much at all during a cleaning cycle you have to take it out and empty it half way through (you have a small window of time between when it dispenses water)if you don't want to wet your counter.

I used to use the auto milk frothing but I get better results manually so I'd probably get the regular bambino next time..

    • +1

Use a pyrex measuring cup as the container you put under it, it's pretty much perfect

  • +1

Great little coffe machine, Have used twice daily for 2 years and is going strong. I havent had any issues with flooded counter top , I always place a 2L mixing bowl to collect the cleaning water as the drip try is too small for the cleaning. I like the auto milk frother which make perfect Cappuchino every day.

  • I'm pretty sure it was a subset of machines a few years ago, but my Bambino has a software bug that means cleaning cycles can't be deferred. So if you pull your shot and it decides it needs to clean, then you have to run the cycle before you can use the machine again. The reason I raise it is because Breville support was beyond bad. I was receiving responses telling me it was functioning correctly in barely comprehensible broken English, even though their own manual said otherwise.

  • The best purchase I’ve made during COVID lockdowns! I’m now a proud self-claimed professional barista.

  • thank you legends. Ordered one with ART

  • For those with issues with a wet bench top. I bought a bar mat off aliexpress and works perfectly and keeps my counter clean and dry.

  • Yep - great post. Purchased with ART. My usual JB Business account had it in the high 400's. Good Guys match offer was $475.

  • Fantastic machine for the price.

  • Page not found…expired?

    • Looks like party's over

      • Snooze you lose waaaa…
Fingers crossed it comes up again!

  • Great deal, paid a smidge under $500 for this in July 2022 when its RRP was $600ish from memory.

Quite compact, doesn't take up much space on the bench and you don't have to wait for it to heat up due to its thermal system. Easy to clean and maintain too.

The small drip tray is the only real negative, requires more emptying than usual, say every 2 to 3 coffees it gets full. If you're diligent with emptying then it won't be an issue.

If you aren't emptying it often than the water will run underneath the machine, from not only the portafilter, but the steam wand and machine itself flushing water after each coffee.

  • No temperature control was my biggest gripe with this machine.

Had some difficulties pulling consistent shots too, I may have had a faulty machine though.
