6 Weeks Free Health Insurance after 1 Month (Signup Benefit) + 7 Weeks Free (COVID-19 Benefit, Credited from 30/9) @ Frank

1210

Thanking and credit to @machej and @skye89 as I discovered this deal via the Gmbha offer.
Sign up by 20th September, pay one month and you will get 6 weeks free +7 more weeks with the covid offer https://www.frankhealthinsurance.com.au/media-centre/covid-p…

I think Frank offers more money back for the extra, but might be more expensive.

Compare both and work out which one is better.

For me Gmbha is slightly cheaper so I went with them as fitted my needs.

T & C:

*For new members who have not been a member during the last 12 months, joining on combined hospital and extras cover, paying by direct debit. Must pay first month to receive six weeks free. Other waits (including hospital waits), annual and sub limits apply. Extras claims made with a previous fund count towards annual limits. Not available with any other offer or Frank OVHC. Offer ends 20 September 2024.

Edit 13/9: Who is eligible for the return of COVID-19 claims savings in 2024?
To qualify for the upcoming return of COVID-19 claims savings, Frank members* need to hold an active private health insurance resident policy on 13 September 2024 and remain active on 30 September 2024.

  • I can't see anything but I was recently a GMHBA member. Does anyone have any idea if that affects my eligibility for this offer?

    • Thanks, I will copy and paste.

  • +1

How would people compare them service wise to GMBHA? Only been with medibank and bupa previously. Deciding which one to switch to to take advantage of the free weeks.

    • +1

Seems like Frank is cheaper and more benefits. I haven't used either but I think it's the same company.

      • +1

I'm with Frank and have been advised by a specialist that they pay the least (going by my situation) compared to other providers. Obviously it now makes sense why they are cheaper

        • +5

What specialist? Just read the factsheet.

          • @fozzie: I'm on Silver cover so pretty much all the major surgeries are covered. But they pay jack. Not worth IMO. Better going in a public hospital as a private patient. As long as the private Dr works in both.

    • Frank Health Insurance is a brand which is owned by GMHBA. So it should have identical service because behind the scenes it is GMHBA. Even on my tax return it shows as GMH even since i'm with Frank. Same company.

      https://www.gmhba.com.au/about/our-brands

"In October 2009 GMHBA launched a second brand called Frank Health Insurance, which was developed to provide a simple private health insurance offering at low cost."

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GMHBA_Limited

      • Thanks for this… I just worry about some of the reviews I see but maybe I'm overthinking it.

  • +2

Been confused trying to find a minimum general cover to replace Medicare levi that helps with gp costs? Can't find which options do

    • +1

All hospital will do that even basic. Extra won’t but I get both to take advantage of the offers.

      • +2

Heck that seems like a fundamental issue clogging up the already congested emergency departments,
Medicare covered $85 of a $110 gp visit, couldn't imagine paying cover and still having to pay that in full for gp visits

        • +4

Urgent Care Clinics are trying to bridge the gap between GPs and Emergency. They’re free unlike most GPs, so once people catch on, they will fill up fast!

  • Is this better or the gmbha offer is better?

    • +1

You need to compare the two. For me it’s slightly cheaper and I can use credit card.

      • +3

There is a loophole with GMHBA, you can select direct debit for payment and just prepay with CC in your account and you pay no fee.

        • Sorry can you provide a bit more info on how to get this?

        • I prepay in my Frank Health account using the manual CC payment (well using a Visa Debit Card) and i pay no fee either.

Besides. Frank Health Insurance is a brand which is owned by GMHBA. So it's basically the same other than brand name.

  • +2

With Frank you can get reimbursement for gym membership I suppose

    • I think others do too, depending on cover.

    • That's interesting, which cover reimburses the gym membership?

Edit: Found it, it's the 'Health Maintenance' item, but it needs an application form to be signed by a health provider for the purpose of improving a specific health condition.

      • +1

From past any physio, gp etc can sign it

        • If I don't meet any of the checkboxes on the form, what valid reasons would they accept in "other - please specify below"

          • @padman: A specific injury/issue e.g. lower back pain, tendonitis etc

      • It needs to be with a PT as well.

    • How much? %/fixed amount?

  • +1

have been with Frank for years. never had a problem with hospital coverage and extras pay 80% which I haven't found with another insurer… and during COVID they refunded us premiums because most people couldn't claim and they had excess profits….

  • Can we combine this offer with cashback?

    • +1

      What's the cashback offer?

  • I'm already with Franks and got the message about the 7 weeks free from the 30th of September, calculated on the 25th September 2024.

Is it best just to stay with Franks and increase extra covers on the 23rd? Or just switch to GMBHA?

    • On the same boat !

      • I’m not sure if you’d qualify for the free 6 weeks as it’s the same people. Chat to them and ask.

    • How do you go? I am with Frank but extra only. Thinking to upgrade to hospital and extra combined.

  • +1

Gosh never heard of this frank guy before lol

  • What about the usual 2 & 6 months waiting period?

    • If you're currently with an insurance health provider , you would invariably already have served the 2 and 6 months wait. That carries over to the new insurance.

      • 6 weeks free + skip 2 & 6 month waits on extras when joining on combined cover by 20 September*

So should be waived even if you aren't with a current provider.

        • Exactly! It carries through to the next provider
I think that's why they essentially throw the 'no 2 and 6 month wait" because a large majority would be moving between providers and served the waiting period already.

          • @Funky-munky: I meant it should be waived even if you do not have a current private health policy. Correct me if I'm missing something?

  • +1

Reading through the T&C. This one caught my eye for dental:
"A range of dental procedures when provided on the same day. For example if your bill says you had a tooth filled and removed on the same day, we won’t pay for the filling"

That seems wild. Are people suppose to just come back tomorrow?

    • To be fair most dentists would ask you to go on a separate occasion if they find you need a filling.

    • +4

I think they're referring to the same tooth

  • Hoping someone can help me with this:

I'm currently with Medibank and have been for a few years. My daughter requires an insulin pump which is covered under Bronze Plus with Medibank. Now if I switch to GMHBA or Frank, I would have to upgrade to Silver/Gold cover, which I know will still cover the insulin pump without having to go through a waiting period again. However, when I want to go back to Medibank (which I will as it's really the only provider I've found that covers insulin pumps under bronze and is subsequently cheaper). Will I still be covered for the insulin pump without having to go through waiting periods again? Since it's a downgrade of cover? Thanks in advance

    • +1

I would think that you should be able to do that. Maybe just chat to Medibank pretending to be a new customer and explain you would be downgrading from silver.

      • That's a great idea, thanks pal :)

    • +3

It's based on the individual item, rather than what labels (bronze, bronze+, silver, etc) they choose to slap on the policies. So if insulin pump in included in the current policy and it's still covered in the new policy, you won't have to re-serve any waiting period you've already served.

      • Perfect, cheers

  • GMHBA has same day no excess option, Frank doesn't appear to have the same offer. DYOR

  • +1

If you sign on for freedom+ with free optical, can I get a free pair of glasses? Then downgrade to basic hospital just to save Medicare levy after 3 months free period is over?

  • Just wondering how to maximize free benefits with this deal.

    • Get highest extras policy and use the benefits

      • Thats Gold Hospital and More Extras at 90.25 per week. They will really offer 13 weeks free on this, and then i can cancel and change in week 14?

        • You can have a lower grade hospital cover if you don't need it, and highest extras.

  • +1

Thanks, 3 months free plus slightly cheaper premiums and increased benefit limits than my coverage with Bupa, no brainer really

  • Is it worth changing, I'm with Bupa and get free dental clean etc twice a year for me and the family.

The cover price is exactly the same on Bupa and Frank.

Would Frank cover a check up and clean twice a year.

    • That "free" cleaning usually comes out of your dental limits, so it's not free so to speak. It's just that you pay no out of pocket subject to your remaining limit. Unless you do nothing else that year apart from your check ups.
Frank does not do this but depending on your cover they pay you 50 or 80 percent back. I do my check ups at Dental 99 and claim 80 percent (80 dollars) from Frank. Works out much better if I have anything like Filling to claim

  • Ahhh yeah good point.. will look into Frank then.

    Cheers

  • $200 Cashback via CompareTheMarket @TopCashback

    • Not sure you will get the 6 weeks free though, seems like sign up process is done completely on CTM without any mention of 6 weeks free.

    • +2

No free 6 weeks with CTM TCB

  • Although I am sure it will be a good deal for a lot of people current I am with Bupa hospital cover, no extras.

Current Frank premiums seem $25 higher per month, since i don't have extras cover, not sure if I will get the 13 weeks off.

Even if I do, I will have to switch again to get the lower premium.

  • +1

Anyone used their extra benefit under "Cancer Council UV Products".

Seems to be very attractive and you can claim sunscreen, swimming suits and sunglasses.

    • +2

I haven't but looking forward to using it :)

    • +3

You have to buy directly from the cancer council website and them claim via healthfund

      • Apparently you can claim cancer council products purchased in pharmacies too.

But not 100% sure about other products sold on cancer council website like sunglasses (which is not cancer council brand).

    1. Glasses Allowance:
I'm currently with HBF and have used my glasses allowance for this year. If I switch to Frank, can I claim a second glasses allowance? Is the extras coverage per health insurance company or is it a yearly quota that applies regardless of the insurer?

    2. Extras Coverage:
With so many extras options available, which ones do most people usually choose? I’m mainly interested in coverage for glasses, massages, and possibly health management. I was considering a plan with 80% coverage, but it doesn’t include health management. Are there plans that do?

    3. Health Management:
For the health management benefit, do they provide the funds upfront? How does the process work? Do I need to pay for gym membership in advance as want to the benefit during a free trial period?

    • +3
      1. its a yearly quota. The amount you spent with previous fund will be sent to new fund in the transfer certificate.

      2. Dental, Optical, Health Mgt (Gym), massage,

      3. Gym membership:

      • Fill in the gym membership recommendation form by GP/physio
      • sign up or pay for your membership after form is signed
      • claim by uploading all the documents
      • Thanks. Seems like i have already used my quota for this year so extras are not worth it for me.

  • For those that switch often - if you switch from another provider, will they refund any premiums you have already paid in advance?

I've recently paid annually with my current provider (ahm) as it's cheaper than monthly so will this be reimbursed after switching? Thanks!

    • Yes, recently cancelled by bupa when i transferred to TH and was paid 5 weeks in advance. Was refunded back to my bank account

      • Sometimes it's a random cheque in the mail for me

  • Sorry could someone please explain how to get another 7 weeks free? I'm currently with Bupa on family policy (2A+2K) and planning to move to Frank. Thanks.

    • You must sign up and start by 20/9

      • Thanks.

  • Signed up yesterday. Is there supposed to be an email about the 7 weeks credit?

    • +1

I got an email from Frank about it yesterday. So you might also get one. It just states that 7 weeks of free credit is coming my way and that i need to have an active policy on 25 Sep 24 and remain active on 30 Sep 24 to be eligible. Not having to pay for 7 weeks will save a few hundred bucks for sure.

Also refer to this web page for some info about the 7 weeks credit. That's all i can find online. It says that the paid to date will be moved forward seven weeks.

      https://www.frankhealthinsurance.com.au/media-centre/covid-p…

      • Thanks. When did you sign up?

        • A bit over 8 years ago. Back when my premium through Frank was only $48.35 per fortnight. Now it's $69.50. The whole time luckily i had not made one single claim. So i guess it was about time they gave some thing back to me.

  • GMHBA look to have better value in optical and dental rebates and allowances, if im reading it right,.

Like frank is 80% return but only can claim 120 a year and 240 a family for optical for the yr.

GMHBA is 80% back and 200 per person.

    • +1

Thanks, I think every person needs to compare the different options. It would be different for everyone. Good news is that if you are a gmbha you would qualify for Frank’s offer and viceversa.

  • Can you buy now and say to start after e.g. October and still be eligible/?

    • No

      • I am just moving early. As it was free weeks with previous insurer I’m not sure if I’ll get any money back, however I’m only loosing 2 weeks. Still great offer if paying 4 and getting an extra 11 free (usually it’s only 6).

  • If I change back to extras only after paying the first month and after the 20th of September will that invalidate my 6 + 7 weeks free you think?

  • is there an easy way to compare extras across funds ?

  • +1

GMHBA has changed the expiry date for the eligibility of the 7 weeks free to 13/09/2024 (today). Has Frank done the same?

    • +3

Yes Frank changed it as well

Who is eligible for the return of COVID-19 claims savings in 2024?
To qualify for the upcoming return of COVID-19 claims savings, Frank members* need to hold an active private health insurance resident policy on 13 September 2024 and remain active on 30 September 2024.

  • Thankfully checked this thread again to find out the date's been brought forward. Just signed up!

  • +4

Damn. I thought I had more time. I was dragging my feet :(

  • Shizzer I signed up on Tuesday to start this Monday. They better give me the 7 weeks… As when I joined it said 20th.

    • +1

On gmbha thread yesterday people contacted them and they said they’ll honour the deal if you had signed up before the change. I hope so, since I had signed up to start on 20th September to get the deal.

      • +3

They'll have to honour it. Or else they would be guilty of false advertising.

        • -1

Here comes the next "Bupa" Ombudsman free for all.

Not a good look burning new customers… Obviously too many sign ups and they had to pull it. But so many of us would have time stamped recorded phone calls for Ombudsman reference etc.

    • I havent got the 6 weeks free email yet…anyine not received theirs?

      • I started on the 10th Sep. No 6-week or 7-week email whatsoever. I paid 4 weeks already. Hopefully the next bill will be zero per their T&C.

    • I just called them to confirm as I had joined on the 13th but my policy start date was the 18th and they said I was eligible for the 7 weeks promo, though as i was a new joiner the application of the 7 weeks was at a 'later date'. the application of the 7 weeks promo for existing members begun on the 30th of Sept. Stupidly I forgot to ask for email confirmation so hoping that it does go through

  • Wow i signed up earlier this week and set 13th September as my start date. I hope i am fine.
