    yoloed it, moving from gmhba

  • Noob quiz, is it a good idea to churn health insurance? Can I choose between public and private patient when enter hospital?

    • +2

Its always a good idea to compare and gonfornthe cheaper one with similar benefits. And, that's where the catch is as it bloody hard to compare (especially complex extras).

Always a good idea to churn health insurance
Any option to reduce the lobbyist tax is a good thing

Does Suncorp have no gap schemes or does it only pay 100% MBS for services? If so, you're likely to have to pay a gap, even when you elect to be a private patient in a public hospital.

    • I looked into this too and unfortunately no "no gap" extras are generally all 60% of total price so you'll be paying 40% each time despite it being underwritten by NIB

HOWEVER if you don't plan on using exxy extras like dental etc in that 10 weeks time, or have already used it, 60% is pretty comparable for all those massagey extras like physio/chiro etc.

  • Done thanks

  • waiting period waived?

  • I compared it to my current Bupa cover and it comes out to be a lot more expensive. Both covers matche apart from Orthodontics which Bupa does not have.

    • Redo your calculations with 10 weeks free. Then go back to Bupa if you wish,

The forest can sometimes be hidden by the trees!

      • Bupa has 10 weeks free too.

        • Get both…20 weeks…

Bupa's 10 weeks is not quite as attractive as it's over 24 months.

They quoted a better price compared to my exiting one, I switched to Suncorp last week. Since the day I switched, I kept being disturbed by their "welcome call". Today I told the guy I was not happy in the way they "welcomed" me, why do they have to keep calling. He said they would like to know if I had questions or anything blah blah blah, I said no, I am in WA, if suncorp wanted to check with me please call me in the afternoon in WA time but not 9am in the morning when I am in the office. He said he had difficulties in servicing me. That was the exact wording he used.

    Very interesting customer services.

    • I hate those health fund welcome calls and ignore them where I can.

The worst ones are where they imply additional information is needed from you to induce you to call back (when in fact there's no need for additional info).

They are trying to build a connection with you, to make it an emotional decision for you when you're leaving.

      • I was never annoyed when I was with Bupa, Medibank and HBF, now I am shopping around again.

        • Just put them on block and leave when the 10 weeks are up.

        • I'm getting the calls too, thanks for the heads up - just ignoring them :)
