I got this but the 8gb version

also it heatsss uppp a lottt 😭

    • how hot? fans not on?

      • +1

        fans suck i guess?

        there do be fans tho,

i opened hw monitor the otherday temp was like 85c+ lmao.

        • +1

Probably worth opening the back and checking the fans and heatsinks are not clogged up with dust and crap.

          • @ZuluOz: That's true, however X series is well known for being prone to overheating since the first generation. The chassis is just too narrow, the fans they were able to install are not enough.

Personally I would buy the T series

      • These are unfortunately well known for roasting chest nuts.

    • How is it other than the heat?

Is it fairly tough? Like school kid suitable?

      • +1

Yeah keyboard is fairly decent, should be able to do most things fine.

Tho in my opinion I reckon the battery life might be pretty bad and the small pen isn't that useful,

And the iGPU sucks like a lot I reckon. This cpu is not that good I think.

        • +3

yep 10th gen intel is using the same igpu as the 8th gen. go figure intel not so innovative

      • Imo stick to the T series for the kids if they are in primary school: T13, T470-T490s range. I'd be on edge with my kids on my Yoga or Carbon. In fairness my X1 Gen 8 survived my toddler standing on it. Pretty sure this vendor has T series.

        • X1 is a different beast though, carbon fibre front and back.

      • They've got a i7 T470S listed, its old but that's plenty and better than new sub $800 laptops.

  • urg.. should i get this if already have 16" laptop, and also a 12" surface pro tablet….

    • Yay more laptops

    • +21

      Probably not.
The most effective way to buy technology is to put off your purchase as long as possible while also planning well enough in advance so that you can start shopping for deals about six months before you need it.

      • true. tempted as i can get $40 back from TRS. net damage is $390-395

        • +2

don't forget, i assume you'll also be using this strictly for work purposes

          • -1

@Paul Atreides: i forgot to say my 16" is intel 9th gen but with 1050ti

          • +1

@Paul Atreides: This is why we have to pay at the GP now, cuz ppl like you

            • +1

@smartProverble: We have to pay for a go now because the liberal party underfunded medicare for around a decade by freezing indexation of payments to providers. The Labour party hasn't rectified it either. They both see it as an easy way to balance the budget at our expense- we end up paying more overall as once the medical industry has us accustomed to paying a discretionary fee they will increase prices far beyond what they would ever have received under a public health system - eventually we will approach USA like costs. Next industry to be user pays will be pathology

              • +1

@greatlamp: nah you're thinking too much. I'm pretty sure its because the peasants are claiming 2nd hand laptops

          • +2

@Paul Atreides: I only use my laptop 2 hours per year while I prepare my tax return.

      • +2

I am learning this! Every time I see a deal I remind myself that the real deal is delaying my purchase for as long as possible.

        • Because I buy cheap and sell after a few years, everyone in my household has their laptop for school, work or uni and it works out to cost about $100 per year each.

        • +3

The real deal is the friends we made along the way.

  • +10

Memory is soldered to the motherboard, in case you are wondering.

    • +4

      16GB is okay!

      • At cost of ssd life. My 16 GB Windows 10 used for Internet browsing only starts swapping to the disk when just 10 GB RAM occupied.

  • Does this support LTE or have a SIM card tray?

  • Battery 70% or above battery health

What kind of battery health are we likely to get?

    • +5

What kind of battery health are we likely to get?

      70% or above

      • +6

        And, most likely, below 100%

      • +3

70% is a bit too close to EOL for me. Hoping OP can be more specific.

  • -4

3 months warranty is very small considering how bad lenevo laptops are from a quality perspective

    • +8

Lucky for us this one is a Lenovo

    • +1

I've had good luck with Lenovo laptop quality although the Yoga touch screens and hinges are a lot more fragile than the Dell or HP enterprise grade equivalents.

    • +1

Consumer Lenovo sure, ThinkPads are generally a bit better.

I'll take either of a HP though.

  • Hows the screen brightness?

    • 300 nits, according to the specs.. which is pretty average

  • -2

    This but with an OLED

    • How much extra do you want to pay?

      • -3

2in1 with an oled under $500 would be ideal. Specs ain’t important.

        • If you ever find me a laptop with OLED screen under $500 in 2024, please let me know. I think your expectations are unrealistic. I'd be thrilled if you could show me your expectations are realistic though.

  • +2

my current Lenovo thinkpad E595 is sturdy and still going. All my other cheap laptops break at the seams. I think i open and closed the lid too often in non standard ways etc.

Also would this be an upgrade on my current laptop?

  • Tempted, very, to replace my 7th gen i5 8gb ram…

…but I will pay 4 times more for that Windows on ARM… Worth it???

    • Thats wild! Either a 5 year old or the latest, no in between.

      • Yeah. Save money and live with it, or have the Windows option that is ACTUALLY a MacBook replacement.

Edit: 4 to 5 times the cost of this for the Windows equivalent.

    • +1

I'd go in the ARM direction. Watched a few videos on it - seems decent.

M1 Mac user - don't really care too much about OS(though UNIX is nice), but quality of device(screen, speakers, keyboard) and battery life are not things i'd want to give up.

I could also get by with a refurb without issues.

      • I am a M1 Pro user. Agreed that the hardware quality is VERY nice. Battery life, I think Windows on ARM will be able to finally match the Macbooks (because MacBook is also on ARM).

Its just the MacOS software which I can live without. Windows is intuitive and most importantly, consistent throughout. The Macbooks speakers are amazingly impressive though.

I think the Surface and LG laptops are very nice and can match MacBook hardware. They are now also on ARM now so it's like the best aspects of Macbooks, but now with Windows.

        • +1

Windows is intuitive and most importantly, consistent throughout.

Subjective. Windows 10/11 is a mish mash of the old style and the new Windows 10 style. There are two UIs to do many things or changes. Windows 11 takes this further by hiding the old context menus. IMO Windows is anything but consistent.

There are many people who would make the same argument for MacOS. I think users mistake being familiar for being intuitive.

          • +2

            @ihfree: I haven't used Windows 11 so can't say….but windows 10 makes sense "all the time".

I'm a developer. On Mac, some keys like the "end" or "home" work differently in different programs including MacOS. Also how macos windows maximise to a new Desktop or the current desktop sometimes, or how it's so difficult to get window sizes to how you want them compared with Windows.

As a former Windows user, who now uses MacOS / MacBook primarily, the MacOS software is a pain and you really learn to live with it. Multiple desktops on MacOS works better than Windows when you have multiple screen, and it's easier to move windows around different desktops on MacOS..But when you're used to working on just one screen and don't care about multiple desktops, macos is a pain in the but as it forces you to adapt to multiple desktops, rant over, I'm not being paid by Microsoft or anything, not changing the world and all of this is personal preference in the end, use what you want and have a good night!

            • +1

@smartProverble: Ahh yeah, that's one area where Windows is better, IMO. I was a also surprised that window management wasn't better when I first got a Mac.

It's easy enough to replicate with a tool like Magnet, Bettertouchtool, etc.

  • This is a pretty good spec for the price. Anyone know a similar style laptop but with better graphics for a high schooler wanting to play some games too? Or once looking for something with a meaty gpu, expect price to double?

    • Same!

    • Tagging @JuryWheel

Anyone know a similar style laptop

What do you mean by style? Form factor? Aesthetics? Productivity/office kind of style?

Or once looking for something with a meaty gpu, expect price to double?

Base-spec gaming laptops will more often than not use an RTX 4050; they'll also set you back $1K to $1.2K, you can't really find (new) gaming laptops for cheaper.

Productivity-orientated laptops with dGPUs like a MX450 are rarer, perform worse than gaming laptops performance-wise and will be more expensive.

You could consider a laptop that just has a beefy iGPU like a 780M but those will be north of $1.5K minimum.

My suggestion? One of these laptops solely for school and into uni, and a cheap gaming PC just for gaming.

  • X1 carbon all the way… I used it for over 4 years and then handed it over to my son who has used it for 3 years for high school. He is now in year 12 so probably will have to give him a new laptop when he goes to Uni but the X1 carbon is still going strong!!

    • This is the x13 yoga it is different to the carbon.

I thought I had the x1 carbon and then realised i didn't :( and sucks 8gb ram soldered so dookie

  • -3

I don't think I'd want to buy a used laptop. Who knows what they've been through or how long it will last. It will be a sunk cost when I would inevitably want a new one.

    • +3

Cool story. You should buy a new laptop.

You can check various indicators such as SSD wear level, battery wear level, etc to get an idea of what the laptop has been through.

I've bought 4 refurbs and all of them are going strong a year or so on. On the off chance a refurb dies, I could buy another 1 or 2 and still be ahead price wise.

      • -1

Don't you get shamed in public because you're using a 2nd hand laptop?

        • +5

Yeah, I generally hide in dark corners of cafes or tell people that I've had the laptop since the exact release date.

        • +2

My mate just more than a year ago bought a new laptop for $2500. He recently needed some cash, so he tried to go to cashies with that laptop. They offered $500. To me, it has a new condition without any tiny atom looking not fine. With this speed of cost deterioration I would never buy new one.

  • -1

Um realistically $450 ish for old used i5-10U . Is a touch tho but nah unless really doing it hard . $250 pass .

  • +1

5 year old processor… to replace a 7 year processor?

  • would I see improvement if I upgrade from 8th gen i5 t480s?

  • Can anyone say what the return process is like if it arrives in less than ideal condition - either battery or damage/scratch wise?

Hoping this can handle at least a couple of years of high school from next year.

    • Hi,

The item comes with a 14-day free return period and a 3-month warranty. You can always contact us if you encounter any issues with the laptop.

      Thank you.

  • Good one , actually few months ago after my alienware has some hinge problems, I bought the X1c Intel 8th series one , looks almost new, battery is bad and I change it , and everything goes fine.

  • Is it possible to play some games with it do you think ? Even if it is in low quality.

    • Absolutely NOT.

      the igpu sucks loo

  • +1

Received mine today. The device is ex corporate (as expected) and had been used quite heavily.

Hinges can hold the screen only at certain angles, otherwise it falls under its weight.

USB-C port is also showing signs of heavy use.

    Battery is barely over 70%:
    DESIGN CAPACITY 50,500 mWh
    FULL CHARGE CAPACITY 36,680 mWh
    CYCLE COUNT 625

For the price it is definitely not value for money. Going back tomorrow. Very unhappy.

    • Sorry to hear this. Apologies if it's obvious but how do you check on battery condition as you have?

      • +1

At the command prompt, type powercfg /batteryreport, then press Enter.

        • Thanks, I really should know this stuff

    • Thanks for sharing

    • Yeah quite disappointing.

    • Must have got unlucky - mine is as below. Also the system is in perfect condition.

      Item Value
      DESIGN CAPACITY 50,500 mWh
      FULL CHARGE CAPACITY 50,490 mWh
      CYCLE COUNT 190
      • What is the battery life like on these? I need to buy one for school…needs min 8 hours battery life.

    • We apologize for the inconvenience. Please reach out to our eBay customer service to arrange a return or replacement.

      Thank you
