  • This used to be 20/22%. Why did they reduce it to 15/17%?

$0 FVF seller promos would be nice

The point of discounts is to get you to buy things you otherwise wouldn't have.

If you only find out its discounted if you've gone to a listing to probably buy it, if you just get what you were already going to get but pay less, that defeats the point of the whole exercise.

They need to tell us what CATEGORIES of things the discount will be one, so people go looking there when they otherwise would not have.

There's a bunch of graphics cards included in the included categories for a change, but like always the final price after discount applied is pretty much exactly what you pay if you buy it from a normal shop.

If eBay wants people to use their platforms, maybe they need to stop the cycle of fake discounts and jacked up prices so people actually consider visiting the site when there's NOT a discount running. There's almost never anything worth getting on eBay these days.

Actually, no. Kogan was hit with fines by the ACCC for doing price jacking.

    • To be fair it isn't the sellers fault eBay takes a 10-12% cut off the sale including the postage.

Someone please correct me as I'm unsure if it's changed but these "campaigns" eBay do they just send sellers the option to participate but then make you eat the "discount" and still take their full cut with no real other incentive so most just jack up the prices to offset it.

      • I wasn't necessarily blaming the sellers - I was commenting on eBay. They can't expect sellers to take a hit on price if their (the sellers) margins are not big to start with. But I guess on that other hand I don't know why sellers bother listing on eBay at prices that are substantially worse than any store. Surely they don't sell anything between these "sales"? Maybe they're hoping people buy without actually doing a Google search first.

      • true. ebay called seller's "co-contribution" at 10% on top of normal FVF, which caused surcharge up to 22% during promo.
so if sold small value item $20, FVF $4 + postage about $6, almost no profit.

also the charge would arrive after 2 months without any detail, seller wouldn't know if it's really only covered items sold in promo period.

Price Jacking was supposedly addressed earlier this year when eBay added a clause to prevent it.
I've literally never seen it come into effect with anything in my wishlist.
Prices always get increased around the day of the sale starting.

      1. You shall not increase the listing price of any of the Included Items and/or items within the Included Categories for a period of at least ten (10) days prior to the start of each Offer Period, or at any time during the Offer Period.

I remember eBay made the change just as Coles/Woolies were being investigated for price gouging, it was clearly some pathetic attempt to demonstrate to the ACCC they don't allow price jacking / gouging.
