I have this one myself since its basically the one of the physically shortest 4070 Super's which still barely fit in my SFF server box (and at a decent'ish price at the time)

    Pro's: 247 mm. Is a 4070 super.
Con's: Some of the most annoying GPU fans I've ever heard spin up, ripped them off and slapped on some low profile noctua's I had spare running at a fixed speed.

    • +5

Just curious, why do you need 4070 super for a server?

      • +22

Doubles as a gaming pc for the weekly LAN party, transcoding stuff… and some side projects I keep telling myself that I'll start doing and never got around to because life.

        • +3

Do you think a new 4070S will further delay the start of side projects?

          • @solacens:

Do you think a new 4070S will further delay the start of side projects?

it's pretty obvious the side projects are just more of an excuse/reason why it was "needed" to get the 4070s
            the real reason is gaming

not sure why side project needs 4070s
other than trying to build AI model or something

            • @pinkybrain: I had ambitions of setting up some AI related home automation stuff but ran into some roadblocks. I don't exactly excel at the software side of things, the language models themselves weren't too hard to get running since a lot of guides exist these days, same with AI art generators. The smaller 4070s were just about the largest gpu to fit in the existing case in the current lineup without going down to a 7600xt on the AMD side, for what I could find stock available for the price.

              • @silenceshallfall: I think this is what Nvidia Jetson is for. If there's a legitimate use for a 4070S in home automation I'd be very interested to know what it is.

                • @xxBARGAINGODxx: I hadn't heard of Jetson actually, interesting read. My hope was to integrate a local llm into smart home as more of a for fun project (inspired by a few projects I saw on reddit), but it ended up being more of a time sink than I was prepared for at the time.

    • is the fan sound really bad?

      • +5

For me it was, which was the main reason I even posted here today. I did look it up online when I was trying to resolve it, some reviews didn't mention it at all, some that I saw on listings specifically gave low ratings due to heat/fan noise. Might well be unit to unit variance to a degree, but given I had the low profile fans available I just took off the shroud and zip tied the replacement fans on since that was the lowest effort solution for me.

    • So you ripped the GPU fans off and installed a Noctua? Wouldn't that void the warranty?

      • +4

Possibly if they were nitpicky, but the shroud came off quite easily, you just had to remove the PCB from the heatsink first. I have reasonable confidence I could put it back together without anyone being the wiser since the classic warranty removed sticker came off and on again without issue, but if I have an issue with the warranty because of it, I accept that's on me. Not recommending it as the solution for anyone else though.

    • did you make custom brackets to mount the noctua fans or used trusty ol zip ties?

      • +1

Directly zip tied the two fans together in the middle, and then a loop around either end of the GPU. Works perfectly for the amount of minutes I spent implementing it. I had an old noctua fan controller spare (NA-FC1) which I plugged them both into with a splitter and just adjusted the fan speed to where I liked it, otherwise you'd plug them into a fan header on the motherboard and probably fix the speed there.

    • What case you have, I am looking for a GPU that will fit a DAN A4-SFX.

    • Got this one on the last deal. Same issue with the fans but i game with headphones so don't notice it.. when it's not fueling a game the noise isnt an issue

    • I know it's not everyone's cup of tea but literally zip tying or taping quality case fans to the shroud / heat sink does wonders for GPU noise under load. It's crazy to me how loud most GPUs are, but at the same time I get that most people can't hear it over their noisy case fans anyway…

  • Nice! I want to play black myth, which mid range gpu could handle it. TIA.

4070 Super can do 60 fps at 1440p native + high settings

    • +2

I've just completed BMW on mixed cinematic and very high settings, 4k no Ray tracing. FPS was around 60+/70 and fairly consistent. It was smooth mostly, there were some stuttering during cutscenes but nothing during gameplay.

My card was a 4070 Super OC but the ASUS Dual version. Bought an Inno3d version that was Dead on Arrival but was promptly fixed with the Asus one. So far pretty happy with this card. Was a nice improvement from my gtx 1080

      • +2

Sorry just to add my CPU was AMD 7800x3d, in case your performance might not be the same as mine.

        • For BMW at 4k, your 7800X3D isn't going to impact frames, it'll be GPU bound.

    • why not just a ps5?

  • Bought an ex mining RX6800 about 14 months ago for $500. I've since moved onto 4k gaming and was wondering what card should I be looking at if I wanted to upgrade?

    • +1

6800 still decent GPU at 1440P, I would at least get 7900XTX if you aren’t interested in RT, or at least 4070 ti if you’re interested in RT and DLSS. There’s nothing wrong going any card, your budget is most important.

      • Thanks, budget more important to me than RT so probably sticking to AMD. I'll probably hold on longer, not looking to replace but just wanted to understand the market now.

        • wat you do with your old RX6800 ?

also how did you check if the card was okay and where you bought it from?

        • My understanding is that DLSS is also notably better than FSR which is definitely something to consider when looking at the longevity of the card

  • +13

Wow GPU prices are STILL this bad?

I hadn't really been following, but guys, it's 3 years since the COVID/Crypto shortage/scalping ended.

Almost 2 years since NVIDIA said "I'm the scalper now" and released the 4090.

    Months away from 5090 release.

And a whopping $850 is still a relatively good deal on a __70 Super card?

Even the most pessimistic pundits could not have predicted it would be this bad…

    • +3

Yep needs more competition. Everyone wants a nvidia product… AMD just isn't as attractive for Gpu.

    • +3

This the result of monoploy and arrogance.

Can just hope for AMD do what it did on CPU field.

      • +3

Didn't they just drop the ball with the 9000 series CPUs?

        • +2

It's some sort of windows 11 micro-code that's causing the problems with the reviewers. Apparently on certain 'stable' w10 builds and pre-release w11 versions the 9000 series still performs as expected (high single digit to low teens in terms of performance uplift - gaming fps).

I would say that AMD consistently drops the ball with GPU performance, less the overall rasterised performance and more in terms of pricing & stability. They are infamous for selling GPUs that need a year of strenous customer (guinea pig) testing before they stop bsod'ing, crashing or otherwise causing harm to your PC experience. Don't get me wrong, even if there was a killer deal on a 7900xtx I'd still be iffy swapping to it just because of the known driver issues.

When you consider that they (AMD) have no intentions to compete with NVIDIA on ray tracing, general stability, recording or streaming software, high end GPUs etc, you suddenly realise that NVIDIA has an iron grip on the PC market. Then when you consider that most of the revenue that NVIDIA generates is from it's AI division & server division compared to commercial PC markets, there is just no incentive to change or lower their existing profit margins.

          • +4

            @Lighter Fluid: Inspiring speech.

Personally still supporting AMD and fine to be guinea pig as most non-latest games are working fine (except for some simulator).

            • +1

@solacens: Yeah. Rocket league 1440p works on my 6700XT. :) But then you boys are playing fancy pants games.

          • @Lighter Fluid: Nope, my 7900xtx has been perfectly cool and stable for 2y. Can't be happier

        • +1

Not as much as Intel with 13th /14th gen cpu

    • +2

We went from crypro bubble straight into AI bubble

      • Nah there was a good stretch of a year or two in between where there was no excuse - they kept charging like scalpers, and (probably to their great surprise) the numpties just kept on buying them for crazy prices.

        • Nah there was a good stretch of a year or two in between where there was no excuse

but without the AI boom right now they would more likely be more competitive with the pricing..
most of their biggest profits are in AI market so that allows them to keep prices high in the GPU market

          https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/gpus/nvidias-quar…)%20worth%20%2422.604%20billion.

    • Wow GPU prices are STILL this bad?

Nvidia really struck it lucky with crypto mining wave/boom during covid shortage and now the AI boom.

this is sad state of things due to nvidia AI boom….
they just don't give an F about competitive pricing for GPU
so as a result AMD doesn't need to be as competitive with their pricing either

  • -1

this seems like a deal? considering it's $550 more for 4080 from a recent deal.

  • +4

    16Gb or nothing

    • RTX 2080 Ti 22GB is where it's at ;) Just expensive and no warranty.

    • 7800 XT for $719 or the 7900 GRE for $829 my dude

    • +1

I went 24GB. If I was considering this card… I'd probably buy another used 3090, performance is essentially the same, but double the RAM. Only downside is power usage.

      • arent 3090s still around 2k?

  • +3

This or a AMD 7900GRE? Similar pricing on https://www.pgrid.com.au/gpus/radeon-rx-7900-gre

Most posts I've read says, if you use RT then Nvidia but from a visual standpoint with RT and RT off how different is it?

    • +1

For RT then only NVIDIA is a reasonable choice ATM. For Black Myth, being a Nvidia aligned title, most AMD GPUs will suffer. Overall, the 7900Gre is better in non-RT titles and has 16gb. The XFX version can be had for $829 at Scorptec.

    • +5

7900GRE, why wouldn't you want the extra 4GB and better pure raster performance?

Framegen will work fine with AMD, and upscaling will also work fine with AMD.

As for RT, it's really only eye candy that will heavily tank a 4070/super's FPS.

AMD will draw a little more power, fairly negligible if you know how to set things up properly (undervolting, tweaks and fps caps etc) this applies to any gpu though.

So if you just want eye candy and low, junked FPS then 100% go NVIDIA, but in all other cases AMD is way better value.

    • The amount of games that utilize RT to its fullest is minimal, but you have to figure out if that's important to you.

7800 XT for $719 is basically same performance for cheap or the 7900 GRE for $829 will beat it

      • I haven't seen a top line game in 18months that didn't have a ray tracing option and look much better for it. Even NBA 2k this year have ray tracing, Which looks amazing as the ball bounces around the ring, ray traced reflections on the back board.

So Unless your comment was posted in 2021. It's void

  • +1

Personally I spent a little more recently and got this Inno3D version for $900. Much beefier cooler and triple fan whilst still being very compact - proper dual slot like the PNY, and not too long. They also do an X2 version at the same price which is 2 fan and roughly the same size as the PNY.

    https://www.centrecom.com.au/inno3d-geforce-rtx-4070-super-x…

I find the build quality and cooling/noise to be really damn good on the Inno3D model, which is contrary to some opinions of the PNY. The Inno3D is full metal shroud and backplate, appears to have a denser heatsink with more heatpipes too. (edit: checked - 5 heatpipes on both Inno3D models, 3 heatpipes on PNY)
If fan noise is important to you then save up the extra 50 bucks or so imo.

Also that one comes with a free Star Wars Outlaws game right now, not sure if this ebay listing does so that could be a bonus.

  • +1

I'd spend a tiny bit more and go the Gigabyte Windforce version from the same store with the triple fan, it's so quiet.

During EOFY sales, got it for around $800 all up which included the 10%/$80cap shopback from this store, they shipped within the week

  • I have this card and I can't get fan control to work properly. Even the pny software doesn't control the fan curve. Fan seems to go from quiet to full noise like an on off switch. Gives me this shits. Every thing else with the card is fine. Especially it's size because I have an extreme sff case. Hate big towers.

  • I bought this and upgraded from a 3060 Ti. As everyone mentioned, the fans at default setting are really loud and annoying.

I highly recommend undervolting the card which makes it operate at cooler temps and avoid the fans ramping up and being loud, guide for reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5Halugk3d0
