Was looking for a decent Mini PC to dip my toes into setting up a homelab and came across this.
~25 USD more expensive than this Soyo M2 Mini PC but worth it IMO considering this has 2 ethernet ports, nicer bluetooth and Wifi and seems to have a much nicer build.

Specs:

  • N100 CPU
  • 16GB 4800hz DDR5
  • 2 1GB Ethernet Ports
  • Expandable SSD, up to 2TB (2242 width)
  • Intel 7265/ 3165/ RTL8821CE, support for Wifi 5 and Bluetooth 4.2

Also, this is my first post, go easy on me : )

Keep in mind the RAM is soldered, not that it really matters because the max for the N100 is only 16GB.

    • Good thing it’s DDR5 then.

    • It does matter, memory should never be soldered.
It will poop the bed at some point, it is not a matter of if but when and there goes the whole thing unless you have skill to solder new memory to it.

      • RAM very rarely dies. By using LPDDR5 you get lower power usage and faster speeds compared to SODIMM.

  • Why only BT4 on these midget PCs?

    • They use some extremely budget Realtek BT and Wifi chipset to cut costs.

  • I ordered mine on 15 August and it's just cleared customs now - so pretty quick.
Got it for $203.71 inc GST and I think that was a welcome offer, so this deal seems good.
Can't comment on the quality as I haven't received yet.
I just purchased this WD 2tb 2230 SSD and a 2230 to 2242 adapter with the hope of installing it.
Any recommendations on a media remote to use for this would be appreciated.

I'm gonna sound slightly insane, but I actually used to use a steam controller as my media remote, and Steam Big Picture for the frontend. The fact that it has a touchpad is great for websites and it's still a controller so navigation is mostly fairly easy.
Unfortunately I moved houses and lost the back of the steam controller. They're fairly hard to come by these days so I'm pretty much screwed.

I've been using an 8bitdo 2.4GHz controller (specifically the Ultimate) with my media PC and it's good as it has the dongle integrated into a dock (can be removed also). Not a typical TV remote but it is responsive. If you want to use any remote I'd recommend getting a FLIRC.

I spent ages looking for a quality remote but in the end, the controller I already had was good enough. RIP Logitech Harmony.

  • Coupon code not working, with taxes come to $210 for me.

    • I just tried the code AUS150 and got $20 off

    • Is it your first Aliexpress purchase? Might be a welcome offer instead and therefore you can't apply coupon?

This would make for a good little budget home automation server for someone, less than $200 in a very compact footprint.

Sorry relatively new to this game, could this serve as a Home Assistant hub?

      • +3

        Yeah

I was thinking along simliar lines, but also pfSense, snort, and any other things I can throw on top of it before it bogs down…

  • cheers, I had a mini pc shaped hole in my life after skipping the p330 tiny deal (I know they're quite different specs wise)

  • Can this be used as a pihole ?

    • +1

Would be overkill just for pihole
You can install adguard with open media vault. I have this setup with RPi 3b+

  • Good for GeForce now?

  • Was this the brand involved in ROM related issues (malware)?

    • +2

Lenovo lol. Nah just do a fresh install of Windows from a USB and you'll be fine incase there is a dodgy install.

      • So do I also need to add the cost of a Windows license? Or can I use existing one on the machine?

        • +1

The license is tied to the motherboard so doing a reinstall will automatically activate Windows.

As far as I am aware it was some other chinese OEMs, Minisforum comes to mind but I am not 100 percent sure.
But yeah, just reinstall windows from a USB. It's very easy to do and 100 percent the recommended option if you're buying a PC , whether that be from a more reputable company like NZXT or a more 'shady' manufacturer like Firebat.

        • +2

It was Acemagic/Kamrui. The company they were using to load the Windows images and slipped some malware in. It's been a common issue for years.

The idiot who negged me and thinks I'm wrong should actually read what I linked lol. You'll be shocked to discover how many more big brands have been caught out.

note: it appears this comes with an EU power plug not AU.

  • Nice find I bought the Firebat 8845HS, 16GB Ram, 1TB SSD for $576.71 instead

  • Received mine.

Regarding the Windows clean install, assuming I download media creation tool from here and prepare the USB.
Should I then just be able to install and not have to worry about saving a license key or drivers?
Should the installer prep Windows 11 Pro?

Thanks - sorry, haven't had to install Windows in a very long time and don't want to brick this thing.

    • Ended up following this YT Vid and bypassed the wifi sign-in with oobe\bypassnro like he did.
I had signed in first to check that windows was working/activated, then launched the setup from usb.
Once I did the fresh install I had a mini heart attack as it said the windows wasn't valid. Once I went online it validated.
All the drivers appear to have auto updated with windows updates… I think.
