This previously popular M.2 2230 sized SSD is on sale again and while it's not an all time low it's the cheapest price I've seen in months and this is due to AliExpress ending their loss leading sales campaign. Fortunately you can get this even lower by stacking with 12% cashback at TopCashback and an extra 1% off with Coins.

A good option for upgrading the storage in handhelds such as the Steam Deck (OLED on sale here) and ASUS ROG Ally. As well as other devices like the Surface Pro 9, X, Surface Laptop 3, 4, Laptop Go and more. Since this is a Gen4 SSD you shouldn't use it with the Surface Pro 8 and Surface Pro 7+ due to stability issues. Both of these have no issues with Gen3 SSDs.

This one offers a sequential read up to 5150 MB/s, sequential write up to 4850 MB/s and uses Toshiba BiCS5 112l or SanDisk TLC flash. Unfortunately 2230 sized SSDs don't have DRAM cache, but this one uses pSLC cache and HMB to make up for it so it's perfectly fine for gaming. Especially when a lot of other similar SSDs are QLC.

They can be used in various M.2 2230 USB-C enclosures found on AliExpress too.

I can vouch for this NVMe in a Steam Deck LCD/OLED and the ROG Ally.

    • Thanks what are the good tutorials for swapping out the ROG ally SSD?

      • +1

Asus have one uploaded themselves to show users how to do it but there's plenty on youtube.

I have done it myself a few times now and it's super easy. 6 screws (I think, but could be 4) on the back and pull the backplate off. Disconnect the battery cable because it's in the way. Then undo the screw for old SSD and replace. It's all right there in front of you when you take off the backplate. Just remember to reconnect the battery again (one of the reasons I had to do it again). Because the battery got disconnected, just plug it in to power to turn it back on again and it should be good to go and start reinstalling windows which can be done via cloud on the bios

        • Thanks I will check that out. Nice info and write up a thumbs up for you

      • Also, the middle bottom screw on the backplate doesn't come off. It unscrews but it stays on the backplate.

Use plastic opening picks to pry the backplate off. Don't use metal on plastics.

  • Any concerns with buying from Aliexpress? I've only ever bought low price items from them.

    • +8

Low feedback (<95%) or stores with generic Shop8164727381 sounding names can be risky in that they won't send your item or they'll send you something completely different. Getting a refund for this is easy.

The other risk is to expect no warranty but if it's a Choice item AliExpress will often refund or supply a return label. Choice items are quick to ship too - around 7-9 business days for delivery.

      • Thank you. I'm going to give it a go, just got an Ally so it's great timing

        • +1

The AUS150 code doesn't seem to be working and tax is being charged on top making it closer to $180. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

    • once i bought a phone aud 400 plus. it was okay.
they will get delivered very fast

    • +1

Picked one up from this deal for my Deck, arrived a few days after purchasing and have had no issues with it - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/852885

      • did you have to clone the current to the new drive before install it?

        • Sorry can't advice there as I didn't bother with cloning as I'd only had the Deck for a couple weeks at that time, just did a fresh install of Steam OS.

        • +1

Clonezilla to a USB drive your Steam Deck OS, the flash it to the new one once you've installed the new NVMe.
Definitely saved a lot of time setting vs setting everything up again if you're a tinkerer.

    • I bought this during their last sale and the SSD was dead within 7 months. Dealing with their customer service was a hell and they don't guarantee their store products for more than 15 days. Be careful with your purchase.

      • +1

Did you end up getting your money back or a replacement?

        • Nothing but left with a faulty SSD.

  • Is the any possibility of organising a cheaper group buy / discount on these? (As per your comment on the coupon deal)

  • Still $25 more than previous… Maybe the cashback will make it hurt less

  • +3

I am getting charged $17.42 for tax bringing up total to $179.72.

    Anyone getting the same?

    Chose paypal

    • Yep same boat for me

      • Did you add the coupon code? AUS150

        • It isn't working. I think because the welcome deal is already applying. Cant seem to be able to unselect it

          • @secondsolution: Yep the Welcome Deal won't work with coupons. You can get some pretty cheap stuff with that offer.

    • Try adding the coupon code?

Gee with vouchers i bought a second SK Hynix 2280 Platinum P41 2TB for outlay of $116.99 on Amazon and replaced the cheap n nasty SN740 256GB 2230 in my new Thinkbook 16 G6 IRL. Todat ordered from AliExpress Crucial 2x16GB DDR5 5600 for 133 came down to 123 with Cashrewards/AliExpress Code AUS080 and $8 cashback from Cashrewardss AliExpress are not always the cheapest, unless it is a sale! MAin have bout NVME enclosures, DDR4 Samsung, DDR Crucial RAM in past
These are Dramless and very low TBW Maybe ok for steam but not good for PS% laptops and desktops

    • +5

2280 vs 2230 is an unfair comparison, some ppl require a 2230 for like.. MS Surface…

    • +2

When did you buy it? It’s impossible to get it at this price now.

  • -1

    Update price to include GST.

    • As per the deal the price is inclusive of GST. I shouldn't need to remind you to actually click the link and apply the discount before commenting.

      • As you have said above, the discount code provided cannot be used as you cannot first remove the 'welcone deal' on this item. Therefore this deal can't be achieved.

        • Yes if you're a new user you can't apply coupons as mentioned in the coupon deal. If you're not a new user (made a purchase before) you can apply the code and the price can be achieved.

The new user deal is pretty awesome on it's own anyway. You can get Choice products for a few cents that would normally require a US$10 minimum spend for free shipping.

If you still have an issue with it. Use the report function and see what the mods think.

  • They can be used in various M.2 2230 USB-C enclosures found on AliExpress too.

Any recommendations? There seem to be a tonne of listings of different levels of sketchiness

Just want one to clone my current SSD internal drive to make replacing easier

  • I've seen some 2230 extension boards to 2242.
Would I be able to use this 2230 in the Firebat T8 Pro mini PC? Trying to decide if this is worthwhile or whether I just get a 2242 - although there seem to be less choices.

    • Yep shouldn't be an issue.

  • +1

Can this be put in an adaptor for Xbox series X expansion?

  • Put one of these in my Surface Laptop 7. Working nicely for a few weeks.

2230's are usually always more expensive than 2280's because 2280's are the 'standard' size. 2230's are niche.
      You cant compare the two

      • It's like they expect us to cut down the SSDs to 2230 and expect it work.

  • +1

I have a 1tb my steam deck, filled up. So many games fit that I have choice paralysis and end up playing the same 2 or 3 games which makes me think whether I really needed more than the base 64gb it came with….

  • Mine came to $159 using PayPal. Thanks OP.

  • Bought thanks OP for this!

  • are parts bought from AliExpress genuine?

    • Yes. A fake SN740 would be a first.

    • These are OEM parts. Manufacturers buy them in bulk cheaply to put in their devices. So you won't get a WD warranty etc but they are definitely genuine

  • Any good deal for portable?

  • Bought for 156.06 with coins so with 12% Cashback $18.7 for $137.36 is not bad at all

Very close to last cheapest https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/852885

  • Mine turned up today. 8 days after ordering

    • Hey mate for some reason my SN740 arrived tried to use the enclosure unable to initial disk.

I have a feeling this SSD is faulty

      • Do you know the enclosure is compatible with the drive?
Can the enclosure do NVME or is just SATA?
Does the enclosure have a capacity limit?
Can the enclosure supply enough power? (noting that 2.5w is the limit for many and this drive can draw 4w)

I would recommend putting the drive directly into a motherboard to test if its the drive or the enclosure. My money is on the enclosure being faulty.

        • Enclosure works fine with other SSDs. No issue. This enclosure is 2230 one specially made for and works fine. The drive is faulty

          • @neonlight: 2230 is just the physical size. It doesn't have anything to do with what type of drive it is. What is the exact model of enclosure?

All I'm saying is you haven't ruled out an incompatibility between the drive and enclosure. Troubleshooting 101 means you need to try the drive in a different system.

FYI too that opening any device will not void your warranty under Australian consumer law.

            • @mfazackerley: As far as I know the product is of an import. So it would need to be sent back to US via Amazon AU for the Asus ROG Ally.
Opening any device and making changes usually voids warranty.
Anyhow I'm not taking any risks here. The enclosure works fine with this 2230 WD SN740, we have user comments using the same enclosure I have works. I will just wait for the next deal. if you want to know the model HAGiBiS MC13 - https://www.amazon.com.au/Hagibis-Enclosure-Aluminum-Solid-S…

  • Received a faulty SSD. Now sending it back for refund. Disappointing. Looks like will never buy form Aliexpress with these more expensive items

    • What was wrong with it?

      • Can't recognise the drive at all. Unable to initialise the drive. Error incorrect function. Also the drive itself doesn't show until 30 seconds later which is odd in disk management. Then became initialise option completely greyed out. Tried different cables, 3 different computers. The enclosure works fine it's the NVMe m2 SSD

Its dead on arrival. I started the return process. Posted back free with return label.

I have no experience on return or refund with Aliexpress. I don't have the original postage wrapping that came with it but got the box that clearly says its WD SN740 drive with bubble wrap inside protecting the drive. Hope that will be fine. Sent back the box with my own packaging and return label

Sorely disappointed. Probably never buy again. I don't know if I would trust any seller on NVMe drives from Aliexpress

Sadly after all these year reviews don't mean much.

I guess it YMMV you might get some bargain while you can get crap as well

        • So your saying your positive the drive is dead but you havent tried the drive in a computer directly or even in a different enclosure?

          • @mfazackerley: Why do I need to try in a different enclosure when all other drives I have work with the same enclosure? Also that enclosure is 100% compatible with it even there are user reviews using the same.

My experience tells me it is a faulty drive. When you cannot initiate the drive nor access it at all and gives you invalid function error messages

I'm not going to open my Asus rog ally device just to put this faulty drive in and void my warranty

  • +1

Definitely try different enclosures as suggested above…

ORICO M2PV-C3 M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure - Tried the first time and had the same "incorrect function" error

ASUS ROG Strix Arion S500 - Tried this enclosure afterwards and had the "this device is not ready" error

Before writing it off as DOA - decided to try the Orico enclosure again - Lo and behold, I was able to initialize!

Both drives were connected via usb-c to usb-c cable (the one that came with the Orico enclosure)

Honestly can't tell you why it decided to work afterwards…

    User Error?
    Enclosure Fickleness?
    The joys of tech?

Going to test out the drive some more before I decided to install it in my Deck…

    • Hi mate thanks for confirming as well. I'm pretty sure it's a dud with "incorrect function". I heard stories from Reddit that Aliexpress OEM WD SN740 drives are a hit and miss

As I result I got a refund however due to exchange rate fluctuations I lost $2 AUD as a lesson

I doubt it will work as i said it will not initailise and incorrect function, the controller or the chip itself is not workable. The seller is selling those out like hot cakes though but they don't actually work.

Even if it works under the final enclosure you got, not sure if you heard stories, China has many fake drives that shows that much capacity but when you reach over certain GBs it will stop writing and throw out errors. Certain controllers does not check the disk entirely and blindly formats it, which is why you can intialise but until you use it you don't know.

My Corsair 1TB MP600 Mini works straightaway, I got that instead, with 5 years warranty and less capacity I'm ok with it.

WD SN740 also draws more power and uses QLC not TLC unlike Corsair! shorter lifespan, good luck….

  • +1

Mine also dead on arrival… tried two enclosures, my steam deck, my desktop, my laptop - none were able to initialise or read / write anything.

    Gotta love AliExpress…

    Any (functional) alternatives?

    • Refund it, that's exactly what I did. At least Clear, the OP acknowledges and asked waht went wrong, meanwhile I seem to be acting like an idiot when I'm not. Thanks for confirming. Go refund it. its DOA, the chip has an issue

Like i said I went and bought this instead https://www.amazon.com.au/CORSAIR-MP600-CORE-Mini-NVMe/dp/B0…

Works instantly, I know it's 1GB but better. Much better than these Aliexpress dodgy sellers with dodgy SSDs

This Aliexpress seller should be banned if everyone got a dud
