Does Kogan remove the original 45w charger and replace it with some random 45w one for AU plug?

Kinda bad if they do, removing original parts, probably reselling at a premium too!

    • Im not overly fussed. Any USB-C with PD charging works for mine. I have a few 65W chargers with 2metre charging cables located throughout the house which keeps the deck charged while im playing.

      • +3

That's great, but really beside my point. Sure any one can BYO charger/s, but I'm more wondering what sort of butchery Kogan perform on the original parts and packaging before handing them over.

        • -4

Well what does success look like to you? A 45W charger that wont work in Australia included in the package?

          • +1

@nedski: Yes, considering It should work fine, afaik it handles anything from 110-240v so all you need is a $1 plug/prong adapter thingy.

I'm fine with a bonus 45w AU plug charger thrown in too ofc.

    • +2

For mine they included a random au plug that does the job. I grabbed a refurbished steam deck a while back through ebay kogan, so you might have to double check through someone who buys new.

      • How does this compare to the Legion Go?

    • +9

I have one from Kogan, they included the original charger but also included a 45 Aus plug one as well as a usb c cable. Although it didn’t come with the steam deck box which was extremely strange. Just the deck sealed in in the hard case with the cardboard wrap on it.

Thanks for answering my question, not sure why I was negged for a genuine question?

It would be scummy if they hack up the original SD packaging and substitute with a cheap 45w charger

Also, that sucks that you don't get the original box. Some people care about this stuff (original box, original charger, original paper work etc.)

not sure why I was negged for a genuine question?

Clowns are the reason. More negativity in this place. I don't mind negs but they need to explain why.

    • My two non-OLED Steam Decks from Kogan purchased around Feb 2023 each came with Cygnett PowerPlus 4 Port 45w PD Wall Charger (White).

      • That's pretty nice, not just a noname job.

Did it also include the original UK/US one too though?

Can't speak to Kogan, but can say absolutely adore my Steam Deck OLED that I got for $854 in the ebay plus / mobileciti sale earlier this year.

Great device for a huge variety of games - I've been finally clearing out my backlog of unplayed Steam games - the Bioshock series, Doom, Wolfenstein, Stardew Valley, Forza Horizon, Balatro, plus doing a tonne of emulation.

Great to be able to pick up and play quickly, super easy to set up, and handles most stuff I've thrown at it surprisingly competently with minimal compromise normally needed.

Some things will run terribly, of course - it's a handheld - but there's more than enough great games that run well that make this device great.

    • +5

It's been a PS3 emulation workhorse for me, and also helps by playing some of the free Steam games I accumulated over the years.

But, it's still incredibly buggy the moment you leave gaming mode.

      • Love mine too! Currently playing Super Mario Galaxy 2 and the unreleased GoldenEye Xbox 360 remake.

        • How do you play smg2 without a Wii mote to point at the screen?

    • +5

This thing has been a godsend for keeping up with gaming when you have little kids.

In a middle of game "DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD" power off and see what kid wants. Kid still alive and issue addressed. Power back on and resume where I was

      • Tempted for this reason. It's the same reason my Switch is my current gaming console of choice…

      • Precisely what makes steamdeck much more appealing than others. The fast suspend/resume is the best.

  • +2

Might as well get in early for all the regular "ally/legion is more powerful" crowd. When you look at the time between frames rather than just the total frames delivered (essentially stutter), the steamdeck trades blows right up until you unplug it from wall power where it typically out performs it's competitors. If you want to play competitive fps games on a handheld for some reason get a windows handheld, otherwise the SD oled is a great pick.

    • +6

The part about playing competitive fps doesn't make sense to me.

Surely no actual pro/competitive player would ever use a handheld regardless of its capabilities.

If you just mean performance for competitive game types (ie. CS2) then surely a steam deck can run CS2 adequate, right? No need for an ally X for that.

Mind you, an ally X being a lot more powerful and much larger battery capacity (and 120hz vrr screen) does mean better longevity and even overall better indie/retro/emulation performance as well. So they shouldn't be ruled out as just "competitive fps only"

    • Not true. ROG Ally X with Bazzite on it will be just like a steam deck but with better performance all around.

I might end up getting a steam deck OLED because it is $700 cheaper, but from a performance performance and usability it is totally bested by the Ally X now.

  • +4

Hmm soooo tempted, this or the ROG Ally from Germany at $865 on Amazon Intl now that Steam may be coming to the ally https://www.amazon.com.au/ASUS-Console-Display-Graphics-Wind…

    • +7

Just be aware that is for the non extreme version, and Amazon just last week had the extreme version going for $741, so might be worth keeping an eye as prices seem to fluctuate a lot from Amazons international stores

      • +1

Wow didn't know there was two different versions, good thing you commented!
I unfortunately missed out on the $741 so been having the feeling of FOMO making me make mistakes haha

    • +7

      No!

      That's the non-Extreme model!

It was also $742 a week ago for the Extreme model.

Under $900 or no sale 🤣

  • +7

Absolutely love this thing. It saw me become Elden Lord for the first time while I was sitting in the car waiting for my dog to get his haircut.

    • +3

Im replaying Dark Souls 3 on it and the family is seeing a different side of me every time I die. Might give Elden a go after this.

      • Def try Elden Ring, it's awesome

  • +6

was a recent windows drivers announcement for the OLED model

    • Thank you, completely missed this.

  • +5

Really substantial upgrade from the LCD model from someone that has owned both, the upgrades outside of the screen like the new sticks, better shoulder buttons, quieter fan, the minor but noticable decrease in weight, all of which really add to the experience imo.

    • Aww I was just comforting myself I don't need an upgrade. I know I love my LCD version so much already.

  • +5

I get no time to play on my PC so I'm trying to justify buying one of these by saying I can squeeze in more gametime since it's portable. Meantime my Switch sits in the drawer and hasn't been touched for 4 years 🤔

    • It's different. My Switch has been collecting dust since BOTW, the Deck gets used at least a couple hours a week. Being able to pick it up and smash out a quick sesh as Love Island or whatever other horror I'm being subjected to on the day plays in the background has been a game changer.

      • +1

What's different about it though? Just the available games? Plenty of games I want to play on Switch but still don't pick it up.

        • Yeah having most of my pc library available is amazing, quick resume means there's really no ned to square away an hour for gaming you can just pick it up from where you've left off. All it's really missing is dual boot with windows, would love to be able to play my gamepass games on it too but that's a bit of a pain in the arse to do at the moment.

  • +2

On a side note, one thing I wished happened was Microsoft bringing the console controls from the Xbox version of AoE2 to PC, which would help make it Steam Deck friendly too. Obviously no comparison to mouse and keyboard, but for just casual playing/campaigns, it would be nice.

  • +2

Just ordered a 1Tb. Been looking at these over the last week and this deal sealed its fate. I travel a bunch for work and thought I might be able to keep my brain somewhat engaged gaming as opposed to watching a bunch of brainrot.

  • +2

Still waiting for Valve to stop being so butthurt over our consumer law and to release the Steam Deck over here without the need for grey imports.

    • +1

You keep waiting a few more decades

  • Do these have any issues in aus besides the power adapters? Any region locks with steam accounts or game availability? Looks like a way better option than the ally/legion go but I'm a bit hesitant since it's not meant to be sold here
