whats a good mobo and ram to pair this with? was hoping to get the ryzen 9 version of this but this price is tempting.

I wouldn't buy AM4 today, better off with AM5 and maybe a 7600X or similar. Then you can upgrade CPU later. This CPU is great for people on AM4 already, not so much if building a whole rig. my2c

Don’t get AM4 for a new PC. Go AM5 and don’t think about it, there is a very low chance for any new AM4 CPU’s so you will be stuck in that ecosystem until you do a full upgrade again.

      • AMD just announced a 5500X3D lol, its not really new seeing as they already have a 5600X3D.

    • usually any 3200mhz ram or higher is fine ryzen plays well with ram these days. If you're going to get a mobo I'd consider something from MSI so you can enable the Kombo Strike level 3 option this gives the cpu a slight upgrade in all core workloads and reduces temps vs stock (just an easier way to overclock the locked cpu vs PBO method)

however I'd more aim this CPU at someone wanting to upgrading on the platform who already has a X370,X470,X570 type board or even B series. If you're buying in new and need a mobo I would consider just jumping to AM5 platform

Has been significantly cheaper (~$230 AUD) on Aliexpress and may go on sale again for the 19 August sales.

    It's been sub $230

355 dolleridoos is a lot of money for a dead platform and a marginal upgrade for 1440p & above gaming. 200 right now and we're talking.

    • +2

Can't really call it a dead platform when AMD is still releasing CPUs for it. There is even a rumoured 6 core 5500X3D coming out.

      • +1

None of the chips they've released since the 5800x3d have surpassed it, these chips are just stock that didn't meet certain requirements that have been getting repurposed. The lower chips are low stock releases at that too; often exclusives.

It is a dead platform that I will upgrade to a 5700x3d eventually but no way in hell at a price like this.

      • +3

Perhaps not a "dead" platform then, but it's certainly a superseded platform.

The Ryzen 5 7600 offers comparable or better gaming performance than the 5700X3D, and is a better all-round CPU for less money.

I would say that the only users for whom this sort of CPU makes sense are those still on 2nd or 3rd generation Ryzen CPUs (e.g. those Ryzen 5 2600 / 3600 chips that sold like hotcakes), and are looking for a drop-in upgrade. Even then, it makes little sense.

AM5 platform costs have also dropped significantly. These days, you can easily get an AM5 motherboard for $150, DDR5 is now very much in the same ballpark as DDR4. You could get a Ryzen 5 7600 ($280) + B650 motherboard ($150) + 32GB DDR5 ($150) for around $600. Even if you're on AM4, just sell your existing parts if you're looking for a $300-400 upgrade.

Overpaid on Aliexpress a few days ago still like $255 aud

as others have pointed out, not even close to an ATL. Got it for $319 for a mate recently from ebay.

    • Atl for Amazon

      • +11

When people claim an ATL, it’s not in reference to a specific store, but all stores. Historically.

Also just received mine from AliExpress this week, paid $225, arrived in about 10 days and working perfectly. Definitely a worthwhile jump from my old r5 3600.

    • +4

Yeah, lots of people have these from Aliexpress (myself included) and I haven't heard of any issues. Plus, failure rates for these CPUs are so low, especially such a mature process. Warranty is basically a non-issue and Aliexpress is historically very good with DOAs.

Maybe a different story if this was a GPU, but I couldn't justify a 50% premium buying locally.

    • Would it make much of a difference though from a R5 3600 on a 6700XT? Playing on 1440P

      • +3

Depends on the games you're playing somewhat, but should definitely be a large improvement. I probably wouldn't pay $300+, but at AliExpress prices it's a very solid value proposition.

I'm on a 4070 for comparison, and coming from my 3600 I'm seeing a solid 60% increase, but that's in games that really benefits from the cache.

      • +1

I’m upgrading my 3600 and have the same GPU as you to support my 240hz monitor. I’m pretty sure after watching several benchmarks and researching other forums that I’ll achieve close to low 200fps consistently.

Right now it’s holding around 100-150fps

    • How are the prices on AliExpress so cheap?

Are they used parts, or is someone along the supply chain just taking the mickey out of end customers here?

      • +1

They're new parts, but the tray only so no retail box etc. I don't know if that implies they're not actually intended to be sold direct to consumers directly or something similar, but I think the main difference is just regional pricing.
I don't think AMD would offer any warranty support if it was needed, but like others said the failure rate is very low, and AliExpress is pretty decent at accepting returns on DOA parts.

  • Bad deal.

  • +1

Retail price in Australian stores has been lower than this for months, just saying. Call me when it gets sub $300! I’ll jump on it straight away lol

  • $240 or so on AliExpress if you can wait out delivery times (week or so).
