  • I want a Ryzen 9800X3D or a cheap Ryzen 9600X to use until the Ryzen 10800X3D (Zen6) comes out.

    • +2

I got a 7950X3D for only $600 recently (used, works great)

Really want a 9950X3D though, I just want total processor domination.

  • +8

For those on lower grade AM4 CPU and still planning to stick with the platform for a few more years, this is a great buy

    • +4

it really is, I upgraded from a 5600G to this about 2 weeks ago and my FPS in CS2 went from ~180 to 350+ so my CPU was heavily limiting my FPS previously

      • +1

Damn that's massive improvement, completely worth the upgrade especially if you play regularly

      • Oof I didn't think the differenc would be that large. I'm also on the 5600G currently; Would you please care to share any other perfomance improvements?

        • I dont really take much notice on other games as I mainly play CS2 and I dont have any figures but even just desktop feels noticeably smoother having multiple windows and video streams up

      • Might be that the 5600G has far less PCI bandwidth because of the internal GPU, so even if you were using an external GPU it would be like trying to shower through a straw.

        • yes this is my belief as well, it was the G part of 5600 that was likely limiting my performance

          • @xazark: Why did you opt for a 5600G if you used a graphics card with it?

            • @Cleremy: bought it ages ago and didn't realise it was the G series until it arrived, decided to keep it at the time as I needed a CPU to build my PC and the suggested it was only a small decrease in performance from the 5600X when not using the GPU aspect but now thinking I should have bought a better CPU ages ago. Either way, very very happy with the 5700X3D for $230, best upgrade I have ever done price to performance I think.

    • +1

No it's an amazing buy if you have a Ryzen 1xxx or 2xxx if you've got a 3xxx or heaven forbid a weaker 5xxx it's pretty good, but a harder sell at this price.
Your old CPU is near worthless and this is still over $200 - I'm hoping to see this sucker sub $180 in the next 6 months.

    • Agreed. And when I got this a month or two back on previous deal from Ali I soldy 5600 for 120$ on eBay. Cheap upgrade to get me an extra couple of years

  • +2

Still a great deal. Any ideas on why 5800x3d deals are so few and far between compared to other AM4 CPUs like this one?

    • +5

The yields for the Zen3 8 core 3D CPU's are so good now that they are all going into making Epic server CPUs that sell for way more… THE TRASH chips make it into the Ryzen 5 5700X3D and also require less validation that they can hit the clock speeds

      EPYC 73F3 ( 2x Ryzen 5800X3D )
      16 Core 256 MB Cache $3521

      https://www.anandtech.com/show/17323/amd-releases-milan-x-cp…

      • Ok thanks, I hadn't heard of that at all. So basically a $350 or so 5800X3D is highly unlikely for a long time.

Does that mean the 5700X3D chips are dodgey/unreliable at all?

        • +3

It means that they didnt hit the clock speeds to make them viable to be a 5800X3D OR EPYC 73F3

So they get binned down as an alternative product = 5700X3D

As because the 5700X3D is a locked part it cant be overclocked and made unstable. The chips are sold stable at their rated MHZ so nothing to worry about..Due to the lower clock speeds they use less power so that a bonus.. Its only around 5% slower vs a 5800X3D when using a RTX4090

          • @vid_ghost: Awesome, thanks very much for the info. I will continue to ponder my $$$ spend strategy for the use-case (being casual gaming and music with my 3600 cpu and RTX3070 and I want a new CPU to improve single core performance for music, pair with a new GPU at some stage and hold me out for AM6).

            • +2

@Sandaz: The 5700X is the CPU to get… :) its at the top when it comes to AM4.
Nothing else comea close apart from 5800X3D… the 5900X and 5950X are only good of you need that many cores.. but there are not many applications and even fewer games that do.

              • @vid_ghost: Thanks, thats what my friend bought with a similar use-case.
I've been so tempted by 5600x because of similar clocks but it has 6 vs 8 cores which i guess isnt great since i'll typically have a couple or more programs open. I've seen it for $140.
I think best price on 5700x is around $220.
Good to know about the 5900x too, I very nearly bought it recently at $330 - until i got spooked by it having 2 x 6 core chiplets with its cache split between them = confusion but that didnt sound ideal for me.

                • +1

@Sandaz: 5700X3D is the best one for gamers on AM4 :)

  • Hey @Clear what motherboard would you recommend for this CPU ?

    • +12

If you're buying new, this cpu probably isn't for you IMO. I'd go AM5 and a Ryzen 7600.

This cpu and the 5800x3d variant are like the Swan songs for those already on Am4. So unless you're really penny pinching I wouldn't personally be buying new into AM4.

That being said, and newer current gen b550 board should support the cpu however older 400 series boards will likely need BIOS updates before being compatible.. Could be the same for any 5xx series if your buying used as well or an older revision

      • Many Thanks for your input :)

        • B550 also need a bios update

      • At present running a AMD Ryzen 5 1600 Six-Core Processor 3.20 GHz in a MSI X370 SLI Plus AM4 motherboard, would this CPU be a good upgrade also would I need to do a Bios update ?

        • +2

MSI X370 SLI Plus 5700X3D Compatibility - Looks like BIOS update is required.

          • @netsurfer: Thanks very much :)
So I would be able to run this CPU in the MSI X370 SLI Plus AM4 motherboard with a BIOS update ?

            • +4

@chrisie: Sounds like yes however note the fine print. It's a beta bios. There's no promised stability so keep that in mind.

Coming from a 1600, check your boards website for compatibility but a 5600 may just be enough for you, a little cheaper and obtainable here in Aus with Aus warranty. Massive leap over the 1600 still and keeps power draw/cooling requirements quite low still.

Edit just checked even the 5600 is beta bios. So up to you if you want to try it. Looks like all 5xxx series cpu for that board are on the beta bios

              • @ReaperX22: Thanks U have given me a lot to sleep on taking all that on board.

              • @ReaperX22: Just to let you know gave your suggested 5600 CPU a shot with the beta bios update, works well at this stage with no problems.
                Thanks :)

                • +1

@chrisie: Nice! Congrats. Should be quite the jump from a 1600! I noticed massive jumps from my 2600 to my 5600x and I'm at 2560*1440p

                  • @ReaperX22: Did you also upgrade your ram at present I have 2x4 GBytes sticks of ddr4 being a total 8 GBytes ?

                    • +1

@chrisie: You should definitely have 16gb at minimum, ideally at 3600mhz as well. Ensuring your also have your RAM at its rated speed in the bios is important too.

                      • @ReaperX22: Yes I thought that might be the case so would you think 2x8 sticks 3600mhz cas 16 would be suitable and where would you suggest the best/price to buy it ?

                        • +1

@chrisie: Would be suitable, can't say the best price/place to buy it though. I've gotten away with 3600CL18 for a while but CL16 is definitely better, but if the price disparity is huge CL18 3600 is okay too.

                          • @ReaperX22: Thanks !!!
Will have a look around & see what I can find.

        • +1

It's literally one of the best CPU to be upgrading from, the difference will be very noticable.

          • +1

@hamwhisperer: True if you are running less than 1440P with a very powerful GPU.

Going from 3600 to 5800X3D when running triple 4K on a 7900XT on F1 22 would yield exactly 1 extra fps… for example.

        • Are you CPU bound with your games?

Worth the upgrade if you are. You would be more likely to be CPU bound if:
          1. You are running lower resolutions (less than 1440P)
          2. You already have a powerful GPU
          3. You usually run at non-max visual settings

Most systems are actually GPU bound. I would suggest most people would be better off redistributing the upgrade money to a more powerful GPU - unless you only have the budget for upgrading the CPU alone.

  • +1

“It is normal to have stains on the surface” ?!

    • +1

I'm assuming they mean scuffs or scratches which are pretty normal for tray CPUs.

  • dont think it is a worthy upgrade from 3800x, or is it?

    • +2

      It is

    • +1

it is a massive upgrade.. if it was a 5600/5700/5800 .. its only around 15-20%

    • +1

      Depends.
Purely looking at Passmark, the 5700x3d scores 15% better.
Given the nature of this CPU, your games might profit more than 15%.
'Normal' CPU-specific loads (e.g. compiling, video editing) will probably sit around said 15% improvement.
So the question is: is that worth $228 to you?

      • A 5800X is around %15 faster in games vs a 3800X and a 5800X3D is another 15% faster.

It would make the 5700X3D around 30% faster the a 3800X in games. :) while using less power.

        • Probably true if running at 1080P with a mid tier GPU.

The higher everything goes, the less important the CPU becomes.

        • Worth the upgrade from 3700x with RTX 3080, 1440p ?

        • +2

          So:
30% increased game performance going 3800x->5800x3d…
          Therefore concluding:
30% increased game performance going 3800x->5700x3d
          Must be missing something…

Anyway, I stand corrected with regards to gaming performance, it is indeed a huge difference.
          See https://gamersnexus.net/cpus/new-amd-ryzen-7-5700x3d-cpu-rev…
Some graphs show both 3800x and 5700x3d, others only the 3700x which in games is generally only marginally slower than 3800x
Looking at non-gaming there, Blender had virtually same performance between 3700x and 5700x3d so 3800x might even be fractionally faster.
7zip had 5700x3d some 13% faster than 3700x so logically the difference between 5700x3d and 3800x would be a little less.

          • @JustAnExPat: the 5800X3D is 5% faster then a 5700X3D when using a RTX4090 $2700 Graphics card

When using slower cards the 5800X3D and 5700X3D are pretty much the same thing

    • +5

If your GPU isn't bottlenecked by your CPU, then don't need to upgrade. It will be good upgrade if your GPU is bottlenecked by your CPU, otherwise only few % performance improvements.
I have 5600 with RX6800, there are few games my CPU is running at high 80% to 100%, while my GPU is only using 70%-80%. Then 5700x3d is big upgrade to my 5600. But i can't be bother to upgrade as only few games like that as i am playing 1440p. If i am playing 1080p, then sure i will upgrade.
It's all depends what GPU, what resolutions, what graphic settings, what Hz is your monitor ect?

    • as I mentioned above, I upgrade from a 5600G to 5700X3D and went from ~180 to 350+ fps in CS2, for this price its an easy yes for an upgrade imo

    • +1

depends on your GPU and resolution. Playing at 4K? It likely won't do much (although I found it greatly reduced stuttering from a 3700x). Anything lower, should have good benefits, unless you're using a 1060 still.

End of the day, I sold my 3700x for $100, it wasn't a big investment.

      • Also depends on the games you're playing. I got this for grand strategy and it has doubled the speed of my game compared to my 3600 (and yes, I'm still on a 1060 GPU)

    • Only if you can sell it for at least $60 (you can't)

  • +1

Just considered getting one and going with a desktop platform to replace my laptop that's playing up…
now i've dismissed it as it's only benchmarking <25% better than my 4800U!

    Blimey!
(but the GPU / games are 50% better so,)

  • Gawn

  • Tempted to upgrade my 3600. But worried about a cpu from aliexpress.

    • This aliexpress store has been posted numbers of times. You can check the comments https://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/5700X3D%20type%3Aoz…

    • +2

I upgraded from a 3600 to a 5700X (non-X3D, it was before they were announced), and the difference is night and day.

    • +1

I am currently using a CPU from this seller (also upgraded from 3600). For what I am playing most of the time (FFXIV) it's a massive upgrade.

Came in barebones packaging, but definitely brand new and works well! Not a crap binning, either. Undervolts very well and running cool.

  • +1

lol I am rocking a 3600. Running very well for what I need it to. Tempted to upgrade for no particular reason.

    • Me too! I'd need to upgrade my cooler to work with this though and in my NR200 case that is the only thing holding me back.

      • Does it run that much hotter?

  • omg value? everybody knows the peasant 6 cores are the real value champs

  • +3

Banger upgrade for anyone on 1080p high refresh rate and a GPU above RTX 3070 / AMD 6700 / 7700.

For those using 1440p + and a 5600X/5700X + a GPU below 4070 Super Ti / 7900XT, it’s probably better to ride it out for an AM5 rebuild later on.

  • +1

    Got a 5600x and a 4080, debating debating…

    • +2

      https://www.techspot.com/articles-info/2808/bench/Average.pn…

      106 > 132 FPS averages at 1080p on 4090, subtract 10% for 4080 numbers.

    • I have the same and I'm still wondering if it's worth it.

    • +3

I had exactly the same setup and upgraded to the 5700X3D, I think the real-world improvement I'm seeing is roughly 12-15% or so; it's not much at all. Certain CPU-intensive games like Tarkov will run much better, but you probably won't notice much difference in most games.

Having said that, if you want dramatically better performance, you'd have to switch to AM5 so the total bill would be far bigger. This is probably the best value upgrade you can get for AM4. The 5800X3D is absurdly priced in Australia and I don't see that changing for the foreseeable future, so it's automatically ruled out.

      • +1

and 5800x draws more power yis

  • Worth getting this or waiting for a 5800X3D sale ?

    • +5

You will pay so much more for a 5800X3D for a relatively minimal gain. 5800X3D on Aliexpress just doesn't go nearly as low as this despite being an older product.

  • I need ram deals cuz this patriot viper 64gb (32x6gb) 'alius m die chips' cannot post with xmp setting on my b550m asrock steel legend lol

  • +1

Make sure to check if your motherboard support this, for me this cpu is onlysupported with the latest beta bios and it is unstable.

  • What do you all reckon, should i just upgrade to AM5 or stay with AM4 and get the 5700X3D cpu?

    I have the following:
    Asrock A320M-HDV R1.04
    Ryzen 3 1200 3.1GHz
    G.Skill DDR4 2400 CL-15-15-15-35 1.20V 8GB (F4-2400C15S-8GNT)
    Galaxy 1050Ti OC PCI-E 4GB GDDR5
    256GB Toshiba NVMe
    Thermal Master 420W (TM-420-PSAR-M3)

    • +1

AM5, this CPU is only worth it if you're currently on an AM4 mobo. Not worth to get an AM4 mobo in 2024.

      • +1

The motherboard i have is AM4

        • +2

          3 1200 to 5700x or 5700x3d is big upgrade.

but btw w ur current ram u can proabbly oc like 1.32-1.35volt to 3000mhz atleast

          • +1

            @AndrewMTG: I was thinking maybe i go with 5700X3D ($230) + 32gb ram 3200MHz ($99)

            • @Rakddon: Your GPU is a 1050ti, is the upgrade to improve your performance in games?

If so upgrade the GPU first. A CPU upgrade before that won't do anything.

              • @GandalfTheCheap: Not gaming but thinking to use this spare pc as a server in a year but as a daily pc for now.

My current daily pc is a i5-4690.

        • A320 is too old, probably wont support 5700x3d even after bios upgrade, plus the vrm maybe not enough for a 8cores cpu, better get a better motherboard say b450 plus for the 5700x3d.

          • @couger: It supports 5700X3D, but maybe your right about it being too old.

        • given the age of the motherboard, and the fact that you're not going to use it for gaming, you could upgrade to a Ryzen 5600 (as its TDP is only 65W so the motherboard should be fine with that)… its Passmark score is around 3½ times higher than your current Ryzen 3 1200 (you might still have to upgrade the BIOS to support Ryzen 5xxx). Will make a fine daily driver.
If you're willing to accept 2nd hand, then 5600 can sometimes be had for around $100; otherwise, new via AU retail is $169, new via AliX as low as $133 (probably ex delivery)

    • Depends how much moolah you want to spend upfront and if your mobo supports this chip.

If I were you though am5 is the play.

    • +4

If you're doing gaming the rest of the system will be a bottleneck with this CPU. The GPU and slow RAM.

Probably better to save money for a new system. Nebula or Techfast are good value.

  • +4

Protip: AMD's new gen is coming out in about a month. Prices on these will drop even further soon after, or there may even be a comparable new gen chip at a similar price.

  • Worth upgrading from a 3600 with a 2060 Super gaming at 1440p?

Was thinking of getting a 4070 Super as well

  • Really tempted to ditch my 10700 for this as it is really holding back my 7800xt in modded skyrim vr especially with it costing about 3x more to go for a 7800x3d upgrade. Not much info online about non 3d v cache am5 chips and the cache seems to be king in my current use case.

    • +1

You can probably sell your 10700 for about the same price as this 5700x3d, and motherboard for silimiar am4 mb too, using the existing ddr4 .

    • +1

The reason the 7600 can peforme the same as a 5700X3D is 6000MTS CL30 DDR5 ram :) games like fast ram or lots of CPU Cache

  • What ram should I pair with this. I have 16gb of 3200? I can't remember the timings.

    • +1

If your RAM is enough for you, keep using it. 3200 is fine.

  • Just because there was discussion in that other sale, doesn't make it a necessarily popular deal @Clear lol

I posted in there but didn't buy it at that price….. because I've already bought 3 at cheaper prices already haha

    • 25 votes is all it takes for a deal to be popular and reach front page.

  • Bit the bullet..

    Current:
    32gb ddr4 3600 ram
    Rtx3080
    R5 3600x

Hopefully unlock some frames @1440p UW, 165hz.
