This is getting really tempting to upgrade my 2600…

But I'm still wanting to wait until next year for a full new rig…

    • +3

In the same boat as you.
If EOFY sales happen to produce a 5700x sub 200, i think i'm in.
Otherwise live with it and upgrade to AM5 later

      • +1

Yeah think I'm in the same boat.. I have a 5600X. My brother has a 3600. I'd give him. My 5600x nab this and extend the life of my build, sell his 3600 to recoup.. But really want this local + sub 200..

Then it's a matter of whether my 3060 Ti is good enough still at 1440p… :P (spoiler it's fine, but more is always better lol)

        • Yeah my 2070 died few months ago, replaced with a 4060ti so as to not over capitalise… But then what's another couple hundred… Then… No no stop, new build next year

          • +1

@teereb: I went from a 2600 to my 5600x and the gains were pretty big.. I know you'd probably just wait for a new build, but you WILL see DRAMATIC improvements over the 2600 going for any 5xxx series let alone an X3D model. The 2600 IPC is just not great. I saw major improvements to averages and minimums, and I'm at 1440p as well, if you happen to be at 1080p you'd see more!

            • @ReaperX22: Oh okay thanks!

I push it and play at 4k, drop the graphics and get 60+ FPS.

              It is tempting

              Thanks for the info!

              • @teereb: 4k is less CPU bound so might be worth doing some further research should you consider the upgrade

                • @ReaperX22: Yeah I'm definitely bottle needing at vram.

                  Next year full upgrade. Thanks!

    • +2

I upgraded from my 2600 and I have no regrets. It's going great.

      • +1

What's your gfx, and what benefit did you get from it? Games / examples?

        • +2

Hard to recommend a difference because I recently had a huge jump in GPU from a 1080 to a 7900 GRE as well. But I ran with the 2600 for a small while and the CPU was definitely the bottleneck with the new GPU.

The main reason for the CPU upgrade was that a little while back I was in the same position as you, looking to hold out a year for a 'new build' but had a mobo suddenly go bad and needed to upgrade quickly to get back up and running. So I was already into a new X570 board so I figured I might as well breathe an extra 200 bucks into that and stretch out another couple of years. Should do me well for my needs.

          • @henno: Ah fair enough.

Yeah I won't bother with the CPU then. I'll get a new rig next year, after the 5xxx have settled in and see how they go.

            Thanks for the reply!!

My 2600 is definitely a bottleneck with the cheapie 4060ti I bought, but it keeps me running for now

      • +1

Upgraded from a 2700x, and the change was pretty massive. Couldn't believe it tbh

  • +1

that be a normal price here soon

  • Pretty sure it was the same price before the sale started, am I imagining things?

    • +1

Prices are ex GST until checkout.

      • I know
I checked it before 4pm today and certain it was around the same price now with the discount ($234)

  • +1

Mate bought one of these from aliexpress recently without issue

  • Really tempting coming from a 3900x, could sell it off and actually profit in the end

    • Same here, 3900x,
but I don't think we can get more than 150-200,

      • Really? Might as well re-use it if you have a need

      • Looking at ebay sold listings I think you could definitely get 250-350 for it

  • +1

Any good price for AM5 cpu?

    • +2

Ryzen 5 7600 $272 on ebay with ebay plus discount code

  • +1

glorious 8 cores providing beacon of light in the sea of darkness

  • +1

I ordered on the last round, swapped out a 3500. I think I need to revert, I play mostly paradox games and speed settings 5 on CK3 zooms through about 3 months per second. It is insanely fast

  • +4

Just for everyone to coolling down, I bought the same CPU from this store on June 2nd, and it was delivered by express delivery in about 10 days. After assembling, the motherboard reported an error with the CPU. I applied for a return and refund, and as of today, it's still 'request in process' by now….

    • +2

But did you update BIOS before installing this CPU?

      • Sure…

        • Bad luck then. I bought it as well and it works fine.

          • @Azro: Same for me, running it now.

        • Did you check your motherboard and bios version is compatible? If not keeping BIOS up to date, most likely would need to update first

        • +1

I bought this from the previous deal and arrived yesterday. Make sure your motherboard supports this CPU with a BIOS update.
To add, mine was stuck in a reboot loop, so I had to reset the CMOS to default.
Once booted into windows, made sure everything else was working and updated before going back to BIOS and then turning on DOCP/XMP.
For some reason my motherboard didn't like the fact I had DOCP/XMP enabled the first time…

          Try with default CMOS first.

For reference, i'm running an ASUS X470-f Strix

Tempting to order it and also order the one from Amazon at $350 and receive it within 2 days, and when the Ali Express one arrives I just return it to Amazon.

  • I purchased this from the previous deal. Upgraded from 3600x - it's been working a treat

    • This is where Im at.. your happy with the upgrade? I cant afford a whole new system… shit i cant afford glass of water lately… lol

  • +1

Every time these deals come I wonder if I should upgrade from my 3700x.

I have a RTX 3070 if that helps.

    • +1

You will notice a difference, but how much depends on your use case.

I have a 3070 driving 1440p and went 3600->5700X3D. Stuff like Final Fantasy XIV had a 50% uptick in crowded areas. Lows in Hitman 2 boosted a lot. Forza Horizon 5 on the other hand was fairly negligible. Totally depends on where the bottleneck is. People getting huge boosts to CPU-bound games like Hogwarts or Baldur's Gate.

What screen and games are you running?

      • Will be playing Alan Wake 2 soon. Thanks for this.

    • +1

Finally bit the bullet last deal and bought one of these - went from a 3700x too but with a 3080.

I haven't had time to test a ton of stuff, but I've definitely noticed a boost to performance in Adobe Premiere, along with some games. It doesn't so much feel like a giant step forward in potential performance, but I really notice that the slowdowns and lag that can spike in some games/apps don't seem to happen nearly as much anymore. It feels like if my PC used to operate in the range of 65-100% performance, it's now always between 90-110% instead if that makes sense - the performance and FPS drops are much smaller and less noticeable.

Plus I also justified it to myself by aiming to increase my PC's lifespan - this'll be the last upgrade I'll do for this CPU socket, so hopefully I can extend its usable life for as long as possible.

      • +1

Nice one. Enjoy your newly upgraded PC.

    • Haha me too. Haven't yet but I think today is the day.

  • If I were to upgrade my Ryzen 3 2200G I feel like I need to hold out for a CPU with integrated graphics. I don't have a graphics card and I hear they're expensive these days.
If I game it tends to be retro games anyway.

    • +5

Not necessarily. You can get an intel A580 pretty cheap, roughly an Nvidia 3060 in performance. It tends to have issues on very old game engines (directX 9) however these are being fixed with new drivers over time. you should check benchmarks with the titles you play to be sure

      https://www.amazon.com.au/Sparkle-ThermalSync-Cooling-Backpl…

      • Nice info… have a vote.

      • That’s not a bad plan, I might repurpose my Ryzen 3600 with one of these A580 for my kids to game at 1080p.

Get the 5700X3D to pair with my 3070ti.

        Hmmmm that’s a good plan.

    • +1

Consider a 5600G, my cheapie A320 based Biostar Mobo handled it just fine on the latest BIOS. They're very cheap used, even new they're not that expensive.

    • Just get a second hand one. Budget has always been about buying a used Rx 570.

  • +1

Bought during the previous deal, my Cinebench 23/24 scores are pretty much the same as reviewers, temperatures are good, although it's pretty cold time of the year.

I'm able to run at -30 PBO all cores for a mild uplift plus lower temps.. so far only really tested with WoW @ 1080p, but it has the expected performance boost over my 5600 for it's ancient game engine.

    • +1

Yep +1 for me as well, set Curve Optimiser on all cores to -30 dropping my temps down 9'c and runs stable on a wraith spire cooler albeit i may be developing tinnitus as its quite loud

  • Very tempted to upgrade my 5600, do I need to buy paste as well? Got an 240 AIO

    • Yeah you would need paste, it just comes bare in a plastic tray with nothing else

  • Does this come in retail packaging.

    • No. Just the plastic OEM tray.

    • +4

No retail packaging, just tray and cpu
Mine was wrapped in a bunch of glad wrap and foam that looked like one of those parcels showing up on Sydneys beaches hahaha

  • I've bought a few of these now lol

    My general thoughts:

    • massive upgrade from a 1600AF (2600 equivalent)
    • massive upgrade from a 3600/3700x
    • incremental step up from a 5600/5600x

All the above are sporting various GPUs from 6700XTs to 3070tis. If you're already on a 5600/5600x, I wouldn't really bother with this upgrade imho. Yes it IS an upgrade, but not enough real world performance to justify forking out a couple a hundy.

    • I havent looked into PC things in a long time, I have an ROG Crosshair vi with a 1700, would the motherboard be fine?

      • yep should be fine, but will require a bios update to support the newer CPUs

    • Great. I have a 3600.

    • yah I'm on a 5700x which i think i got for like $295-$310. not wortf upgrade ay

      • Yeah not worth the upgrade imo, especially since I'm pretty sure the 5700x still benchmarks better for productivity related stuff, making it a better all rounder CPU

  • Hello
Thinking to buy it to my upgrade my 3600.
Can I reuse the Ryzen 5 3600 cooler? If not, any good value fan cooler to suggest? thanks

    • yep you can certainly reuse your old cooler. The popular air coolers that pop up on OzB often is the Thermalright Peerless Assassin. Do a search and you'll see it come up a lot.

      • +2

For just a dollar more I suggest people go for the Phantom Spirit 120 SE instead — why not get the better and newer option:
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/848793

I'm using this with my 5700X3D and it is phenomenal, super cool and quiet.

  • So many people keep saying it's great for gaming, is it really tho?
I purchased this in replacement of Intel 8700k, and don't really see any noticeable performance gains.

If anything noticed a lot of performance losses across so many games, particularly studders, frame drops and system and system wide load times. Even web pages YouTube take much longer to open.

    • It sounds like there's a whole lot more issues with your system than just the CPU. It could be as simple as issues with the OS. What about the RAM, storage and GPU? SSD? There's heaps and heaps of factors.

      • The only thing changed was the MB and CPU.
        Multiple fresh OS installs.
replaced the MB and the CPU.
        Same results

        • You could be limited by your GPU or the games you were playing weren't heavily CPU dependent.

          • @mrderrickc: Yeah we need more information to tell what's happening but this CPU should be a massive increase in performance, unless you're being GPU limited.

          • -1

@mrderrickc: Possible but Doubtful. Rtx 3090
Take redout 2 for example, gameplay is flawless, but the pre-rendered cut scenes are very choppy.

Honestly I just realised all my AMD experiences have been less than stellar. AMD vs Intel is like android vs iOS. Great on paper but always let down in the execution

        • It was quite literally the best gaming CPU for quite a while before intel stepped up their game and of course Ryzen 7000 were release. This do benefit from good ram I think ideal case is 3600mhz CL16 (or CL18 would be fine).

All depends on what you are playing though, if its 4k you probably wouldn't notice the difference, 1440p will be slightly better but 1080p is usually you see the biggest gains from a CPU.

What RAM are you using? Do you have the XMP profile set correctly?

          • @creesy: I have 3600mhz c16 Gaskill trident z, but the system has 3200mhz limit so down clocks to 3200mhz. So can't XMP

As for res, depends on the game. Play COD @ 2k, with med-high settings no RTX

Redout 2 plays great at 4k, but even a toaster could play that game well

            • +1

@Captain Cheapskate: Then it's probably not a ram thing I have the same sticks 32gb (16gb x 2). The sweet spot for the 5800x3D is 3600MHz but I think it would hardly be noticeable in a real-world situation outside of benchmarks (difference between 3200MHz and 3600 MHz). Maybe it's just a situation wherein the hype didn't fulfil your expectations.

It really is a great CPU, and you will probably get a good 5 more years out of it unless you are stuck it the upgrade cycle like a lot of people. I have an RTX3080 and the 5800x3d and I'm really hoping I can skip AM5 all together.

            • @Captain Cheapskate: check if bios, chipset drivers ect up to dated. This should be quite a huge upgrade from 8700k. I am using 5600 with 6800 for 2 years, i haven't had any problem. Probably check your CPU temps or GPU tems ect during heavy load? Could be cooler problem, if problem not solved, you can ask the people here https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum/7

              • +1

@stevelo: Not just this, but i've noticed in the past when switching from Intel -> AMD and visa versa, you benefit A LOT from a clean OS install.
Driver wipe utilities don't seem to help much in this instance.

If I were OP I would go down this route. The 5700X3D should be miles better than a 8700k.

  • +1

Got it shipped for $212.67 AUD using the details in this post as the price on Ali was dropped a bit more

  • So silly old me ordered this thinking it was a 5800x3d.

    I want to get a 5800x3d.

EDIT: Actually forget it the extra 6-8% performance probably won't bother me until AM6 comes out. It does however hurt my fragile ego that I can't say I have the best gaming cpu on the AM4 platform.

    Mod: Removed private selling sentence

    • You can always undervolt to squeeze a bit more out.

      • I honestly don't think I'll bother I game mostly at 4k and don't play anything competitive and according to all the testing I've seen the 5800x3d is 6-8% faster. I also didn't realise the price increase is as steep as it is ($200)

I'm coming from a 3700x so that should be a fair leap in terms of performance anyway.

  • +1

Very happy with the purchase, huge performance gain coming from a 3600X with 4070Ti (I am a simmer)

  • Cheers!

Got one, updated bios, installed and plugged in and playing straight away!

Upgraded from a 3700x to this. Night and day difference!

You can still “overclock” this by playing around with the base clock and undervolting to lower cache temps.

    Have fun!

    Thank you OP!

  • Anyone else got the rng lemon? Cause after a whole week of trouble shooting I found the cpu to the be culprit of my crashes (yes BIOS is up to date). I didn't want to believe it because it was working fine for 3 weeks, and manage to pull off multiple stability stress tests earlier on.

Hopefully the return process works out…
