Ooof. 5600x user here and unlikely to upgrade until I look at Zen5, but that's a mighty tempting price for an X3D chip.

    • +1

Reckon there'll be a significant enough upgrade from a 5600X? Paired with an RTX 4070 Super @ 1440p, seems to handle almost everything I throw at it.

      • I reckon the 4070 S is just borderline… probably not going to see much improvement except for a very small selection of CPU-bound games.

        • What about a 10400F with a 3080? Each time these CPUs come up, I keep thinking about upgrading but then forget about it.

          • +4

@ldd-mn: no please dont, it will be a waste of money.

Since you have to change motherboards anyway you are better off moving to DDR5

          • +2

@ldd-mn: agree with Freestyle, in your case go AM5 or whatever intel just announced a few hours ago. Also iirc the 3080 is roughly ~ 4070 non-S, so you'd see even less improvement?

            • @xrailgun: Fair enough, I'll wait. It's starting to see its age as a lot of the games I play are CPU bound.

        • -3

Respectfully disagree sir - 4070 Super is a monster GPU and would certainly without a shadow of a doubt be held back by a Ryzen 5 5600X.
Don't get me wrong I recommended the 5600 (non-X mind you but no diff) as THE budget CPU to get all throughout 2023.
But it is simply too underpowered for a top 10 GPU.
It is better suited to a 3060/4060 tier of performance. Its stonking value but no where near good enough to provide the might 4070 Super with all the fresh frames it could handle.

        • In my use case, As I wasnt ready to drop ~900$ on a New am5 build yet, In flight simulator which is my main gauge on hardware , with a 4070s I got basically locked 60fps"@4k dlss balanced ,high/ultra" in all but the most demanding city scapes on approach with the 5700x3d. On the 5600 ( which i sold on eBay for 110$ after spending 240 on the 5700x3d), I was getting down to stuttery 25-35fps on approach into bris itl. Huge difference in smoothness that 100mb cache is golden, Very happy considering that 130$ got me from stutter to butter.

Now I think ill get a happy 18months while I save disp. Income for a 9800x3d build, then 12 months after that maybe a 5070ti

          • +1

@Micsmit: Hope you're respecting the approach speed limits and flight paths into BNE. Wouldn't want to piss off any virtual controllers or citizens!

            • +2

@Jengel: True. I normally come in at mach 1.3 and cobra flare the F18 to scrub speed in the last 500feet. Gotta be more considerate.

    • +3

5600x here as well. God damn I am tempted.

    • Make that 3 for 3… Soooo tempting

    • +1

Zen 5 is already revealed, and AMD has also extended AM5 to 2027+ (possibly until 2030)
Also, you can just get the 7800x3d with the new 800-series motherboards, and then sell that CPU and upgrade later.

      • +7

But 7800X3D is a significant investment, gotta count for both mobo and RAM.

        • Not really, as the newer gen will be released soon, so just buy into Zen 4 once Zen 5 releases or a little bit later than that, so that you can get the best X3D pricing before Zen 5 9000X3D CPUs come out.

      • +2

Depends what you're doing. If you're just gaming all that stuff is a waste of money compared to this. Save for a GPU/cooling instead.

    • +16

I upgraded from a 5600X to the 5700X3D about a week ago (from the same seller too, cp u Store) — the difference is fairly minor in most games, I get around a 15% uplift in fps at 4K, and for lower resolutions it's usually a bit more. You'll notice the upgrade in CPU-limited games like Tarkov though.

Most 5700X3Ds seem to PBO undervolt very well — I have mine at -30 across all cores and it runs very cool when paired with a Thermalright PS120 SE cooler.

I'd say if you can sell your old CPU, the upgrade might be worth it, but you have to keep your expectations in check, it's not going to be anything earth-shattering by any means.

      • +3

Thanks for tempering my excitement with some reality!

      • +2

Yep this is how all CPU upgrades within a gen are nowadays.

It's not really a significant difference, unless your hobby is watching the FPS counter and not actually playing the games.

Unless you're chasing super high frame rates at 1080p, you need to wait 3 to 5 years at least, or you're just blowing money on disappointing gains.

The most hardcore enthusiasts can maybe still squeeze some small enjoyment out of upgrading the GPU every gen or two, but CPU needs 3 or 4 gens.

      • +2

However, if you're into simulation, strategy or city builder games, this CPU can be pretty big in upgrade. Even buldars Gate can see a 35% uplift, which is pretty damn neat for act 3.

I'm tempted to get this for banished lol. My 5600 sees lag around the 2000 population, and I've heard the 5800x3d gets atleast double that.

      • How fast/slow was the shipping?

        • +2

Ordered on 18 May, arrived on 27 May. The usual AliExpress shipping timeframe.

    • 5900XT coming in July if you decide to not go for a full platform upgrade to 9000 series.

    • I'm persoanlly on R5 5600X as well, I will see if I can grab this! Want to hold onto Zen 3 for as long as I can before Zen 6 :D
Don't think Zen 5 will honestly be worth upgrading to as from what I understand, a lot of the major changes that was originally going to be put in Zen 5 was delayed to Zen 6. It would also likely be the last CPU generation on the AM5 socket, like what Zen 3 is on AM4.

  • +1

Damn can't say no to that

  • Excellent deal! I'm sitting tight on my i5-10400F with 3060 12GB, I would have to get a new motherboard and reinstall everything to upgrade here. Wondering if it's worth it.

    • You’d probably save a few bucks on power.

    • +1

Why would you need to reinstall? Just swap the drive over

      • +2

They probably mean the hardware, like RAM and graphics card (and maybe CPU cooler if it's an AM4 compatible one)

  • +10

Thanks for the reminder that I can unsubscribe from alerts now that I bought on the last deal, save future heartache when they start giving them away

  • +1

I have a R5 3600 on an ASUS PRIME B450M-A. Think this would be a worthwhile upgrade ?

    • +4

      go for it!

just make sure you update your bios first

  • +2

how hard it is for peasant 6 core users to ascend…

it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye

  • +2

I have a 3700x and my x570 motherboard appears to support this CPU with a bios update according to pc part picker.

    Should I pull the trigger?

edit: Just saw above post regarding 3600 update, will ponder with intensity.

    • +1

Depending on your GPU you should see a massive upgrade!!

    • +1

Your system would be a prime candidate for an upgrade to this I reckon. Go for it.

    • YES to 3700X .. NO to 5600 or 5700 :)

    • Same setup for me. I bought x570 motherboard wirh the intention of upgrading my 3700x at some point in the future. But to be honest, my system is fast enough and ive used it 95% for office apps, and 5% gaming using a 3060ti.

$224 is a pittance to upgrade, but not sure even need this… but its the OzB way.

      • Same usage case as myself, I read may see further drops and I'll stick with the CPU for now.

    • what is your workload? gaming? productivity? software dev?

  • +1

    AMD is releasing more Zen 3 CPU's a 5800XT and a 5900XT.

    • +2

The 5800XT is basically the 5800X with a boost clock of 4.8GHz instead of 4.7GHz which seems really pointless. At least the 5900XT bumps up to 16c/32t from 12c/24t in the 5900X.

They should have done a 5900X3D.

      • 5900XT is weird, like a downclocked 5950X?

        • Yeah it looks like CPU binning.

        • It's barely any cheaper too, so if anything, it's like a refresh.

      • They should have done a 5900X3D.

the X3D chips don't seem to be ideal on CPUs with dual CCDs.

they have the 3D V-cache on only one CCD and programs have know to "park" whichever CCD is ideal for that particular program.

now the 5900XT being 16 cores probably means it has 2x 8 core CCD.

a future 5 series CPU design with a single 8 core CCD and 3d v-cache might be pretty nice. perhaps call it 5850X3D

  • +2

Very tempting upgrade for my 2700x, could get a couple more year out of my AM4 build. B450m Mortar should handle it with BIOS upgrade.

    • +1

I don't really see much point in waiting all that longer unless you feel your 2700x gets the job done and can wait long enough to build a whole new PC.

I paid $500 to go from a 2700x to 5800x3D in 11/22 and it was well worth it back then. The 5700x3D will get you 90% of the way there.

Depending on your use case, this is an excellent price for quite the considerable upgrade. Any longer and you'll likely just be better off waiting until you can break into AM5 with a whole new build.

      • That is the dilemma, originally planned to build something completely new when 9000s X3D drop but this is tempting me to stick it out on AM4 a bit longer and save the money.

        • You should definitely go for the 5700X3D, at this price it's amazing value and you'll get a big boost in performance. Make sure you're not GPU limited in your games though.

        • check the benchmarks on 5900XT when they release in July.

    • +1

I bit the bullet on the previous deal moving from a 2700x. Can't wait till this arrives. Should keep me gaming quite well for the next few years for a little investment. AM4 is king.

  • -2

Legit question, can the CPU be bugged?

    • +5

To the NSA? Yeah that's rumoured to be in all Intel and AMD CPUs if you want to go down the conspiracy rabbit hole.

      • -2

        To the Chinese government

        • +4

          No.

    • +1

      https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMD_Platform_Security_Proces…

Technically but no, the CPU isn't going to be bugged.

    • +1

Of course, microcode updates. But your OS is bugged anyway so they probably wouldn't bother lol

  • I've got a 3800x with a x570 board, not sure if it's worth getting this or waiting for a 5800x to hit $200 (or a 5900 to get to $250 used). I do a lot of hi-res gaming.

    • +1

I'm the same , 3800x. But at this price bought it few days ago. Will be my last upgrade to my pc. Pairing it with my 3080.

      • Let us know how it goes? Also sitting on a 3800x however with a 3070.

    • 5700X3D is faster vs a 5800x … and a 5800X3D is around 4% faster at 1080p vs a 5700X3D according to hardware unboxed and next to nothing as the resolution goes up.

  • I think i's finally time to upgrade my R7 1700… I've seen a few posts saying my ROG Crosshair VI Hero is happy with 5XXX series, obviously with later versions of bios.

  • I will upgrade from 5600 only if it can be sold $130 used. But unfortunately, it quite impossible.

  • I know it's speculation, but could we expect a similar 5080 build to be under $3000? Would that be possible with the upcoming CPU releases too? Or has it taken a while for a build at this level to get to these prices?

  • Should be a nice upgrade for my missus AMD 3600 CPU :) Thanks!

  • +1

Too good of a deal to pass up. Bought!

  • +1

    Showing up as $162.51 now.

  • decided to bite the bullet and upgrade from a 5600X. Running an RX 7900 XTX GPU at 1440. Should get at least $120 for the old cpu.

  • I ordered saturday and turned up today. Was sent from a company called Quantium Australia in Minto NSW

    • I got it from "Quantium Hong Kong" today.

  • Anyone struggling with keeping their 5700x3d temps under control? Getting 65 degree idle with it undervolted by 0.1 and with a Noctua U-12S.

    • These X3D CPUs will always run hotter with the extra cache. What case do you have? How's the fan airflow setup?

    • +1

My sample Idles at 35deg (15deg ambient), and peaks at 70deg running all core Cinebench R23.

With a PBO offset of -30 it runs a further ~5-6deg cooler and boosts a smidge higher, but I've yet to test if this is 100% stable.

I'm using a basic ID-Cooling SE-224-XTS Black cooler, and a Coolermaster N600 Case (which is high airflow), two fans intake, one outtake setup for my case, and cooling running on 100% for the Cinebench test.

During WoW is runs at around 45deg and Helldivers 2 around 50deg, with all fans on 50%, although I haven't tested any games thoroughly yet.

  • Anyone else got the rng lemon? Cause after a whole week of trouble shooting I found the cpu to the be culprit of my crashes (yes BIOS is up to date). I didn't want to believe it because it was working fine for 3 weeks, and manage to pull off multiple stability stress tests earlier on.

Hopefully the return process works out…
