  • Oof - I'm not sure I could justify almost 2K for an ARM based laptop now - however nice the platform

    • Most of them are around the 3K mark (or more). Not saying that’s justifiable, just that comparatively this is quite a bit lower than the trend for these. My other problem is that there are no Windows ARM laptops that are not “Copilot+ PCs”.

My other problem is that there are no Windows ARM laptops that are not “Copilot+ PCs”.

"Copilot+ PCs" is just a marketing gimmick, it doesn't actually mean anything in the real world.

If you are concerned with Microsoft products from a security and/or privacy viewpoint, you can wait for Linux support (which realistically will come within the next year or so).

    • Yeah considering how the previous Windows ARM laptops went, it definitely is hard to jump on this one.

I think even if they halved the price, I still wouldn't be interested.

At least Chromebooks are ~$500, which is more where the Snapdragon X should be pitched.

    • Performance delta is two completely different categories, no way it would ever be $500

    • At least Chromebooks are ~$500, which is more where the Snapdragon X should be pitched.

Wait, what are you talking about?

$500 Chromebooks are equipped with the cheapest and nastiest CPUs.

The Snapdragon X Elite competes with the highest-end Intel and AMD CPUs, trades blows in performance, and has several significant advantages (being power consumption and heat).

      • there is not enough arm apps to justify the cost
and some arm versions run quite laggy.

I own a Surface Laptop 7th Gen (with the Snapdragon X Plus).

It's a step-up from the Intel i7-1165G7 laptop I was using previously. App compatibility is completely fine for the types of business applications I use (which is what the vast majority of people are using their laptops for on a day-to-day basis), and it's snappier, runs quieter, and has far better battery life.

I've not encountered any issues, in fact, I would say that overall it's significantly better experience than I was getting from my Intel laptop, and much more similar to the experience I get on a faster desktop or an ARM MacBook.

there is not enough arm apps to justify the cost

Ultimately if it doesn't serve the purpose you want, then you can always buy something else. It's a first generation product, so it will always be relatively overpriced and not for everyone. However, it's progress in the right direction.

I've been a begrudging MacBook user (that loves the ARM architecture, but hates macOS) over the past year, so it's good to have competitive alternatives.

  • CPU is roughly equivalent to 8th gen ryzen laptop processors. So might be a little over priced based on that?

    • more about the full package typically better built laptops that are more on the high end, better battery etc… however Windows on arm has a ways to go and if this isn't successful i don't know what might happen to the platform …

    • Unfortunately there are different versions of the Snapdragon X Elite. Only the expensive high end version comparable in benchmarks. Actual real world application use tells a different story and Snapdragon still has at least another year to go, with hopefully decent developer support, before it can compare to AMD or Intel on Windows.

If you look at Passmark the Snapdragon CPU in this laptop only scores around 23000 points whilst the AMD 8845HS scores 28000 points.

Hopefully, they can release a laptop with an ARM processor under 1 kg with longer battery life.

  • Do you know all apps running on ARM processor laptops?

    • They have ability to run all apps - they can emulate x86/x64 Windows and their performance is very good at doing so from reviews I've seen.

      • Sorry but this is completely incorrect. They can't run applications like Google Drive. My colleague bought one of these laptops and the VPN software wouldn't work. Additionally the USB drivers for one device wouldn't load either. The emulation is not 100% stable. Some applications work fine, but others fail to load, are very slow, or have issues in specific parts. You only notice once you go deeper into the application being emulated.

If you are thinking of buying a Snapdragon laptop, thoroughly research that applications you plan on using work 100% or you will be very disappointed.

  • Hope that's the indication of the prices continue to go down on the new platform

  • So what processor from Intel or ryzen could this compare to.
