FAQ
Difference between SLA & FDM 3D printing
Consideration FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) Resin SLA (Stereolithography)
Printing Process Uses a heated nozzle to extrude thermoplastic filament Cures liquid resin with a UV laser or light source
Material and Output Suitable for functional prototypes with visible layers Produces highly detailed, smooth models
Post-Processing Minimal; may require support removal and light sanding Requires washing in IPA, UV curing; water-washable resin is still toxic
Safety and Ventilation Generally safer with fewer fumes Requires proper PPE and ventilation due to toxic fumes
Cost and Complexity More affordable and beginner-friendly Pricier, suited for high-precision needs

Thanks for the detailed post. As someone looking to get into 3d printing it’s much appreciated.

I watched that 'Painting FDM miniatures' video this morning. I'm very very impressed with the quality on the smaller nozzle, especially from a ~$350 FDM printer.

    • I think skilled painters can make most models look good.

Even with a 0.4mm nozzle, you could print at 0.12mm layer heights to get some fine detail.

The Bambu A1 Mini is crazy value for miniature printing

    • I have an X1 Carbon and an A1 Mini. I've printed many miniatures with a 0.2 mm nozzle and a 0.06 mm layer height, but the quality is nowhere near that of resin printers. Printing complex models on FDM is really a pain because it fails often. Resin printing can be a bit messy and involves handling harmful materials, but if you do it properly with decent PPE, it provides much better quality and faster results than FDM.

If you print a single simple model, the printing time for FDM and resin printers is pretty similar. However, when printing multiple objects on the same build area, resin printers can sometimes be ten times faster than FDM, as the printing time for resin is determined by the object's height. For FDM, printing multiple parts takes ages, and even using a smaller nozzle and lower layer height takes an incredibly long time (even bambulab printers) with many potential failure points.

After all that, FDM prints still require a ton of sanding to remove layer marks. Even the cheapest 4K resin printers provide much better surface quality than any FDM printer.

      • @Jamie777 do your results match what's shown in the first YT video? They look like fairly complicated Space Marine Terminators with a fair bit of detail but you never know what's done off camera.

  • wow way cheaper than preorder. Saturn 4 ultra has pack of new technologies and it is really fast and accurate.

  • kind of crazy how cheap 12k has gotten

The real measure of quality is the pixel resolution

Saturn 4 Ultra has XY resolution of 19x24μm

      • Oh wow, its pixels are not square?!

        • +1

no but these are μm we are talking about.

    • Yeah the 4k, 8k, 12k labels are just a branding thing for the most part. It means nothing much compared to the actual pixel resolution of the LCD screens.

There's some consideration of the type of resin you use and the size of the particles is has, but most eye-ball tests can barely tell the difference, if at all.

      edit: Yes, what impoze said
