  • I have a question about refunds on this type of gift cards.

Earlier I made an amateur mistake by using Vanilla Visa gift cards in store, it was an after thought that I should have used them to buy discounted gift cards from a reward gateway instead.

I called the store to ask if I can refund then re-purchase using gift cards, they were fine with that since I have not taken delivery yet.

Went back to the store, the lady was helpful, but the refunds did not go through after many tries on different gift cards. I asked if she could refund to my regular credit card, she said she can only refund to the cards used for payment, which were printed on the invoice, fair enough.

I then called Vanilla customer service, they said the refunds failed because the transactions were still pending, refunds are possible after they have been posted, usually in 24-48 hours.

The goods were delivered too soon, so I did not find out if refunds would actually work.

Has anyone got instore refunds processed on this type of cards? How about online purchases?

When checking balance online, Visa has a pending tab to list pending transactions, Mastercard does not show pending, as if the transaction is posted straightaway, not sure if that is indeed the case.

    • Yes, you can get refunds on these cards.

I find it a PIA because I have to find which of the cards I used, sometimes I've got a lot to look through.

Some people don't think they can refund to these cards, so when buying things with multiple cards, some retailers throw the used cards away. They'll tell you if you need a refund they will give you a storecard with the refund on it.

      • Thanks, that's good to know.

I usually use the gift cards to pay bills, so the need to refund never came up until this time.

  • Are these annoying to spend? If I get left with $14.30 on the card, do I need to go find items to spend $14 on, etc?

    • Use it to pay sydneywater if you have.

    • -1

most merchants should allow split payment right?

worst case you could use whole amount at coles or wws. their machines allow you do it yourself.

    • -1

I'm wondering the exact same thing. I have like $4.26 left on a previous card and have no idea how to spend it.

      • +1

Using Coles as an example: go to a self checkout terminal, know beforehand exactly how much is left on the card, at the end instead of card or cash select "mixed payment", enter the exact amount left on the card, confirm, swipe card, then move onto the next method of payment. I've used up to 3 in one go to clear out spare change left over on these. Obviously easier to do it when the shop is not packed out with people so you can take your time.

        • Oh, sorry. I don't have the physical card. I once bought the online version. But thank you for your response anyway!

      • +1

I top up Myway (Canberra) bus card online, i can choose any value to topup. Maybe same can be used in Opal or Myki?

        • I think myki is whole dollars and opal is multiples of $10 only

      • You can put it on your toll account.

  • Does two different flybuys numbers but same household address consider as one flybuys account?

    • Everybody gets different numbers……you need different accounts.

    • It can be one account or it can be two. It depends on how it was set up. You need to log in and see if there is more than one cardholder on the account. If it is one account just set up another one. The more the better.

  • These cards getting less and less accepted by merchants. Used to work on DIDI, not anymore now

Hi, @WookieMonster. Do you know if Category Choice Grocery gift card has any amount limit? For example, more than $x cannot be spent in one transaction, and one would have to wait for x minutes before trying to use the gift card again.

I've heard that ShopBack Supermarket gift cards have a spending limit, i.e., no more than $450 can be spend in one transaction, and one would have to wait 10 minutes before using them again. Is this right? Could you please shed some light on this?

    Thank you!

    • +3

I redeemed just over $500 at a supermarket from one Category Choice Groceries gift card about two weeks ago.

Someone else earlier this year redeemed $900 in one transaction.

Someone else earlier this year ran into problems after redeeming ~$1900 in a short period of time.

However, I am not sure what the limits are at the moment (or when you make a purchase tomorrow). Remember, this can change any time without notice.

      • +1

I see. Thank you! Your information is super helpful, as always.

  • DEFT or no?

  • Iare the points supposed to arrive instantly? Just getting stressed that i did something wrong somehow

    • +1

No, the points generally hit your Flybuys account the following day or the day after.

    • +1

Wait until about 6:30pm the day after purchasing. This is the case for any Flybuys transaction. I wish points appeared instantly like Woolies.

      • Mine have not appeared from 7/8 - only the standard points

Just went to Westfield Doncaster. Around 730am. Staff said all the $100 ones were stolen yesterday night, they had heaps on the shelf just yesterday evening.

Not sure which losers took all or hid around the store. But I found 5 next to sweet chilli sauce so I must be pissing someone off lolll

  • Just a heads up. I have two Flybuys accounts, one for myself and one for my wife. The guy who served me at 7am this morning would only let me purchase 5 cards per customer. Said he would get in trouble selling me 10 cards.

    • Go with your wife and pretend you are not married. Seriously, I went with my husband and I was helping him with the purchase after I did mine and the attendant said it was 5 per family and tried to stop him.

    • Same, had 2 flybys but the girl at counter said 5 max per person !

      • They make up the rules as they go.

        • +4

To be fair, at nearly all Coles stores I have been to, there is one or two signs at the top of the gift card shelf saying:

A purchase limit of 5 gift cards per customer applies.

          Here is an example.

However, it gets a bit silly when staff start saying it is 5 gift cards per family.

  • Anyone got the experience where a block of numbers were misprinted/not printed? Happened to mine :(

    • Card package tampered.

    • +1

Yes - all 5 of mine had digits 9-12 scratched off and digits on the back scratched off.
Glue over the back making it hard to read the serial number.
CVV on back also scratched off.
Looks to be done by machine very professionally.
What store did you purchase yours from?

      • Vermont South, VIC

        • I thought the updated packaging on these make it harder to tamper with, but guess not?

          • @Craze: inside job

            • @capslock: Dodgy as! I'm gonna do previous recommendation, ask to open on the spot to verify integrity before paying up.

              • @Craze: Hmm. I wonder if the staff at Coles will let you do that. They've got enough shit going on to deal with. Wouldn't be surprised if they just say that it can't be done. But who knows! Given how prevalent this fraud is, as if you wouldn't demand it.

                • +1

@Miscreant: I think as long as you don't back out of purchasing if the card is legit I don't see why they will refuse? Plus the moment you can prove that the card had been tampered with they also have no grounds for you to not go through with the transaction.

But I have read comments on staff on power trips so not surprised they refuse the request.

          • +2

@Craze: No. I checked carefully the packaging before opening the remaining 4.
            Absolutely no signs of tampering.
The card numbers in the window lined up perfectly.
No signs of opening and re-glueing the packet.
            No bubbling or misalignment.
No signs the packet was a replica.
Difficult to believe these weren't tampered with at the factory itself.

  • Tried to buy 4 in a row with my visa debit card. Only 3 went through, 4th declined, refer to the issuer.

    • -1

      Card number hacked before activation.

    • Probably your bank trying to verify that it was you. Happened with me when I tried to pay with same card wirhin 10 minutes. Commbank wanted to verify that I was the one doing transaction. All good after that.

      • You were right Harry. The card was blocked by my bank. I had to call them to confirm it was me, so I could use the card again.

  • +1

So if you are using the SB supermarket card. How do you split it at checkout as when I tried mixed payment it went through assistance and the lady said I could only do payment with one card.

    • +3

This is correct if you use the assisted checkout. You can only split with cash. The cash has to be entered first. If you use manned checkout you can do the split if the operator is willing to help you.

      • -1

I just bought x20 this time for Council payment. Will try this next time. Thanks.

        • Max 5.

        • how could u buy 20! while other ppl didn't get even 1 card.

          • -2

@test8888: 4 accounts and buy it from 4 different location. Got lucky it was stocked everywhere.

            • @Harry Stark: did u use SB supermarket card to buy

              • -1

@ozbargainerlife1: If anybody can verify using a sb supermarket card worked, please update the table (and link to the outcome comment).

                https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/gift_card_deals_retailer_f…

I was in too much of a rush, bought 10 and didn't try.

                • +3

@ComfortablyNumb: Can confirm was able to buy with SB supermarket card 07/08/2024. $5 note + SB $100 card.

Also for anyone in the future, as I found out being my first time, you have to have exact change for the amount you want to buy. Eg if buying one you need $5 and $100 SB card to cover the $105. If buying 2 you need $10 + $200 etc. I was hoping to use a $20 note and get $15 change but not possible. Had to go to the bank for the first time in forever and change my $20 for $5 notes. Hope I have explained that well.

                  • +1

@BargainTim: Yes explained well and this matches my experience also :)

  • +1

Lmao first one in my local stores and ppl already hiding them probably the night before. Didn't have any.

    • Same at Sunnybank Hills

  • +1

Bought 5. All 5 packages were not tampered before opening. on opening, the middle 4 digits has been scratched off.
    How to use?
Is this normal or some kind of scam?

    • +6

Yes, you falled into this scam showed on a Current Affair. Unfortunately, it usually occurs in VIC.

  • +1

Warning to others - i've just been on the phone to the card services.
All 5 of the cards I bought were tampered with and digits very professionally scratched off.
There was really no way of knowing until opening the cards. No signs of glue or tampering evident. Very professional job.

    • +2

Very painful experience on the phone to India to sort out. Not worth it to purchase these.

      • which store do you bought it from?

        • Same issue; bought mine at Vermont South.

      • Very painful and disappointing. At 4+ months they have just asked me to re-send copies of my hacked card and invoice. I sent them copies on the day I discovered the unauthorised transaction back in April. InComm are either hopeless or deliberately stringing out the process. Am regretting not going straight to AFCA (if that is possible).

        • +1

just give them a deadline and say if not resolved I am going to AFCA

          • +2

@ozbargainerlife1: You can go to the ACFA as soon as you have made a contact with them and got an unhelpful response. Dont bother chasing up with their outsourced offshore CS, just go to AFCA straight away and your case will be passed on to a senior local staff who actually has the authority to resolve your issue.

        • They may be trying to string out past the 90 day charge back window for a credit card purchase. After 90 days you can't charge back Visa / Mastercard without great difficultly.

        • +2

The InComm member I spoke to in India was polite and tried to be helpful but was too unskilled to do his job. Phonetically spelled out my name, address, etc 4 times and each time it would continue to be wrong. Thankfully email address was correct as now i've been emailed all my (incorrect) details by InComm.

New requests to send photos of everything. Receipts, cards, packets, etc etc. Thankfully I have all of these prepared despite not now having access to the cards.

          Painful.

      • so can you loginto the card and see where were they spent?

        • No because the number is scratched off so you can't log in.

      • what was the outcome of contacting card services?

    • Where did u buy urs?

    • What are the scammers using these for? Apart from paying nexflix, buying google play gift card? Paying their council rates like the rest of us? their tax bill?

    • I think i read previously a workaround may be that you spend the card immediately somewhere in store (since can't use online without the digits) before the scammer has a chance to know the card was activated and use it. Not sure how much time this is though. Unless they also took off the pin number on the back.

  • Is Australia post blocked this card? Can’t use in Australia post pay the bill anymore?

    • Yes wont work, i tried and it didnt gone throuhg

      • Yes I tried it too

        • Online or in store? Was intending to pay my council rates with these on post bill pay

  • Can't log into my Deft account anymore after adding my third card

These will be hard to use elsewhere…

    • +1

You need to pay without login.

  • -2

Sorry if already been asked. Can these cards be used to buy Coles Gift Cards in Coles?

      • Same here, got the points :)

    • Didn't work on Parramatta platform
