      Points again….aaawwww…

    • +2

Hasn’t happened in store for a while now

      • Almost a year now

        • Well the visa 10% was in March this year so for mastercard yes but not for a 10% off credit card deal

          • +7

@Yabadabadoo: The $100 and $250 Vanilla Visa gift cards were 10% off at Coles in March 2024 for NSW and ACT only.

It looks like the commenter you replied to is not from NSW nor ACT.

    • Why wait? Why not both?

  • +3

    Need 10%

    • +1

It looks like an once a year event now.

      • -1

From memory it's normally a few weeks after this one. Fingers crossed.

  • +3

So you spend $100 to save $5 and $250 to save $3? Hardly seems worth the effort

    • +5

10500 Velocity points for $50 (2 accounts), not a bad trade imo

      • +1

Another 1000 velocity points too if you purchase with a points earning credit card / redeem at 2:1 =11500 velocity points and $1000 gift cards -> for $1050 (10$100 gift cards + 10$5 fee) -> 0.004347826086 per velocity point = $50 / 11500

      • -1

Sorry, how do you get Velocity Points with this?

        • +1

Setup transfer from flybuys, and have a credit card which earns / can convert to velocity

      • How do you get 10500 velocity points? Bonus is 2000 flybuys only

        • +10

If you purchase 5 gift cards through this deal (which is the maximum you can purchase per Flybuys account for this deal), you will earn:

          • 10,000 bonus Flybuys points, and
          • 1 point per $1 you spend on the gift cards.

Assuming you purchase 5x $100 Coles Mastercard gift cards, you will earn a total of 10,525 Flybuys points. Considering you can convert 1000 Flybuys points into 500 Velocity points, that is equivalent to 5262 Velocity points.

          • +1

@WookieMonster: Hi WookieMonster, do you know if The Category Choice Groceries Gift Card can be used to purchase the Coles Mastercard gift cards? It can be used at Grocery Stores & Supermarkets (5411) and Miscellaneous Food Stores(5499). Don't know if Coles has blocked it.

        • Two accounts per first comment 😄

    • +5

You spend $500 to save $25 per account on council rates, utilities, taxes etc. Not much, but there were no significantly better deals last half a year, I'll take it.

      • Can I use this card to pay my council water bill? Mine is more than $530. Please suggest any suitable gift card to save some bucks.

        • yes this GC can do

      • remember the surchage, $0.77 per $100 :)

        • Some councils don't charge a surcharge.

    • +2

      Hand in your card

  • alright, grab some and tell my wallet to stop sulking. Might have to hide the evidence from the missus though—don’t wanna end up in the doghouse! 😂

  • +1

5 per day or 5 per account?

    • +1

      5 per account

  • +2

so we should get 5x$100s to maximise?

    • +1

Shopback supermarket, yes. Not sure about TCN.

      • So with Sb you buyonline and pick up in store?

        • It's a gift card that can be purchased at SB. I think it is a 2% discount. You load it into a ewallet and use it in-store to purchase this card, thereby getting an additional discount.

    • I was able to do that the last time they had this deal, both TCN etfpos and SB supermarket.

      • How long ago please? TCN efpos and SB supermarket also okay?

        • 2-3 months ago.

  • Anyone heard any whispers when the 10% is happening again? @WookieMonster

  • +1

Can those cards still be used to pay ATO bills?

    • +2

      Yes you can

    • +1

The guy on the phone told me they only accept Steam gift cards though

  • Waiting for the 10%….

  • Can you use the gift cards at woolies?

  • +3

Everyone says "no, it's not worth the effort". In reality, you can hardly find any in store!

    • The buggers hide them behind the service counter now

    • There is a whole bunch at my local store 100 and 250

  • Ok so how do you even know what you have saved? I tend to over shop if I have GCs lol

    • +5

I have built for myself an expenses tracking spreadsheet that records each transaction I make (and I created tables and graphs to help visualise how much I saved or lost each month). One of the features I built into that spreadsheet is a cell where I can add in a percentage to indicate the percentage discount for the payment method I used (and/or the surcharge I had to pay).

I had a quick look at the spreadsheet and calculated that I saved ~8.4% by using discounted gift cards on my grocery purchases at Woolworths so far this calendar year (as an example).

      • +1

For Woolworth I always buy 4% discount GCs, but for all other random GC deals, it's a nightmare.

Amazon, 3%, where most of the kids stuff is coming from.

Big W 5%, most of the kids stuff as well.

I have spent without any spreadsheet tracking, back of my mind I am probably savings. And that's what these gift cards are making you believe. You end up giving money to the store even before you buy something 😂

        • Yes, you may occasionally get a sting by not applying a discount code at the checkout.

      • +1

Where do we get them for 8.4% discount?

        • +3

It doesn't look like a straight discount but a compounding result.

          • @Neoika: Still interested in where to get them with this average

            • +1

@thestig: Probably using deals like this to buy discounted GC online.

            • +1

@thestig: Maybe this card when purchased with the Supermarket card from SB. In the past, I have had offers from AMEX for $10 off $100 purchase from Myer or Liquarland and purchased the Coles Myer Card. Similar offers occasionally from Westpac and Commonwealth Banks.

I dont understand the point of these cards, you will have to pay for it to be activated, i can use cash instead or buy something and pay with bank mastercard.

Plus the cash on card expires as well, thats the biggest daylight robbery.

    • Online safety. No need to use your own card and risk your card being compromised.

You can use the remaining funds to pay bills.

      • +3

Someone is going to argue that the risk of these cards getting compromised is higher then your own card haha

        • Reveal the name of this someone…

      • I think my bank offers digital card in app with generating new details for unsafe sites if you ever doubt it.

    • +1

It’s meant to be a gift for someone else

    • Pay with card and it shows as money spent at Coles. Then use it at any questionable place you like and the misses will never know.

      • You better hope she doesn't read your comment !!

        • +1

She'll be asking what happened to the food from Coles, but no food at home.

          • @t25: Donated it to the homeless.

        • Can't she accidentally find the card and check balance?

      • +1

Why is your missus controlling your finances

Freezer isles about to get popular again all of a sudden.

    • +1

Lucky we all bought the puffer jackets.

  • Can you combine this with Efpos gift card or SB supermarkert card ?

Ideally they don't allow to use GC to buy GC so asking if anyone has tried it ?

    • +2

Yes have bought these previously with SB supermarket Visa cards via ApplePay.

      • Was long time ago?

        • Bought 3 months ago and this last week on the first morning of this deal going live. Sorry didn’t see your question until now.

      • Do you split it at the counter or self check out ? It didnt let me split when I tried mixed payment, the lady at the checkout said you can only pay with one card.

        • +3

I did self checkout - bought 3x $100, paid with $15 cash first and then $300 SB Supermarket.

  • +1

Can it pay with TCN efpos giftcard from Woolworths on sale this week or ShopBack supermarket giftcard?

    • Looks indecisive per this table:
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/gift_card_deals_retailer_f…

@WookieMonster might have to add another column for shopback supermarket gift card?

      • +2

That table was only intended to cover prepaid gift cards that are blocked, rather than whether prepaid gift cards are blocked or allowed (and this was implied in the text above the table). There were two reasons for this approach:

        1. There are a lot of prepaid gift cards out there not covered by the table (e.g. Westfield eftpos, Activ Visa, Perfect eftpos, Pocket Money, TCN Visa, TCN Mastercard), and adding columns for all of them would break the format of the table on some devices with smaller screens. For example, on an iPad, the comparison table on the Discounted Gift Card wiki page overflows beyond the edge of the screen, and there is no way to see the right-most columns.

        2. If multiple types of gift cards were added to this table to indicate whether or not it worked, someone from Coles could look at this table and quickly see in one place which prepaid gift cards to add to their block list. (Remember, gift card deals say Gift Cards can't be used to purchase other Gift Cards at Coles.) In other words, I do not want to write a convenient guide for Coles on what prepaid gift cards to block next in their checkouts. Sure, you could still figure this out from reading a handful of deals on OzBargain, but you would need to go through the effort to pick through comments of multiple deals and sort out the wheat from the chaff.

No one has ever reported the ShopBack Supermarket Visa gift card being automatically rejected by a Coles checkout when purchasing any gift cards, which is why it never appeared on this table. However, if the community thinks the table should instead track whether a prepaid gift card is allowed or block, I am not going to stop it, as the table is part of a community wiki page.

        • In other words, I do not want to write a convenient guide for Coles on what prepaid gift cards to block next in their checkouts.

Nice one, but one would think that Coles should know themselves what GC payments are blocked in their system? (I'm naively thinking they have a list internally somewhere)

          • +1

            @Craze: That is my point.

There are currently only three known types of “gift card” payments where restrictions are programmed into Coles’ checkouts:

            • Gift cards issued by Coles Group (e.g. Coles gift cards, Coles Group & Myer gift cards)
            • Coles/Vanilla Mastercard gift cards
            • Vanilla Visa gift cards.

So yes, Coles should know about those restrictions.

The point I was trying to make earlier is that compiling a table with a full range of prepaid gift cards that work and do not work may prompt someone at Coles to extend the “gift card” payment restrictions to more prepaid gift cards (e.g. TCN eftpos, Activ Visa), because they want to double-down on the Gift Cards can't be used to purchase other Gift Cards at Coles policy. With prepaid gift cards, Coles has to figure out themselves the sorts of cards to block, because they cannot rely on the card networks to tell them the type of card being used.

            • @WookieMonster: Thanks, so is the Tcn eftpos from woollies and ShopBack supermarket still can buy the Coles mastercard? @WookieMonster

            • +1

@WookieMonster: TCN eftpos used to be blocked early 2024 as a payment method for gift cards, but only recently unblocked for some unknown reasons. I think it might worth testing other cards out again, like the Coles Mastercards. I have a strong feeling that they might be unblocked too.

Can this be used to buy gift cards online?

    • Can't say for all, depends on the payment gateway.

It's often not the site rejecting it, but the payment gateway. Because they are gift cards and difficult to trace, they just don't accept them to limit their exposure.

      • Paypal is your friend.

    • +1

I use these to buy myself Amazon gift cards. Everyone is paranoid about these getting hacked. So I simply add these into my payment methods in my Amazon account, use the full amounts to convert them into $100 Amazon gift cards which I then use for all my Amazon purchases. Chuck these out as soon as I've drained them.

  • +1

Does this still track as your weekly spend on your Flybuys account and loses low $50 × 4 targeted offer for the future?

    • +2

Yes it'll wreck the account for a while.

    • From my experience this promo does not impact your weekly spend at Coles. I always purchase 5x $100 each time this runs.

    • Yup - wrecks my spend goals every time. Takes ages to cool down
