Was on the hunt for an AIO A4 Laser Printer for the home office and found this to meet almost all my needs.
Great price considering Officeworks currently has them $629 - But could not get them to price match as there was a code to bring the printer down.

Hi, very nice unit: had one for three months. Works out of the box , remotely etc.
However, ask your doctor for permission to buy replacement cartridges before doing so!
Even compatibles will set you back $300 (black is additional).
Would it be worth buying two printers? Almost I suspect.

No one buys original cartridges for these things. Third party aftermarket is the way to go.

$300 is the third party aftermarket price for a set. It's $560 for original.

I was interested in this model a few weeks ago but backed off on it because of the toner cost.

Why are aftermarket toners so expensive for this model? I've got a Brother MFC-L8690CDW (paid $566 from TGG Commercial) and the 4 pack toners from inkstation are only $108.

@mandelbrot: Checked the prices, I guess the L-8690CDW is the way to go since third party replacement toners are around $100 vs $300

@Hypermajoris: Yeah, seem like one cycle of cartridge change will make up the difference in price

Recommend the Brother DCP-L3560CDW for $371 from the good guys commercial for someone that wants something similar but not as frequent use etc.

  • Brother firmware has heavy DRM these days I believe. Not anywhere near as lax as they used to be with compatible toners.

    • Just don't update the firmware and don't allow auto updates.

      • +2

Which works as long as the firmware it ships with isn't already nobbled.

  • The only major difference between L3745CDW and this L8390CDW model seems to be the duplex scanning

  • Similar Kyocera M5526cdn is about $50 more, (3rd party) toner is cheaper and there's no firmware shenanigans (that I know of.)
