Worst Amazon Prime Day Ever? (2024)

Wondering what the general consensus is. Is this the worst prime day sale ever? In my opinion it is. Nothing seems to be a ozbargain level discount other than their own devices. Not even the Amazon essentials stuff are deeply discounted.

I'm happy, picked up a Meta Quest 3 for an all time low of $680 with the sale and a prime day $20 coupon.

    • How much lower than the last ATL was it?

      • $771 but with the bonus game according to Ozbargain, have been very few sales for it.

        • +7

Probably no need to discount when there's no competition. Apple will kill the VPro before end of year.

            • +9

@Ruddaga: Have you calmed down now mate or do you need more time

              • -8

@GrueHunter: Look at the down votes for stating facts. This is legit the responses I saw Apple Fan Boys saying… Not even exaggerating at all.

Gosh you are a bunch of sensitive lads aren't you.

    • I got my for $630

    • I used zip code and amazon app to get it for 670.. pretty neat device. Light years ahead of the OG vive which I hated due to screen door, god rays and that thick cable.

    • What how? Because I was looking at the price the whole time and it didn't drop below $896

      • Still $699 here, even though the deal is expired, had a $20 coupon pop up on the item page.

        • Thanks! Hubby and I ordered one each <3

    • Still not a good price imo. Should be sub $500 for that kind of device.

      (I own a mq2)

      • I agree it's pretty pricey but having had both the Quest 1 and 2, it definitely has a lot of improvements, much faster soc and the passthrough is real nice. I normally buy them, use them for a few months then sell again for not much less.

Is this the worst prime day sale ever?

    Nah, bought stacks of stuff…

    • +2

      Don't believe you

      • +5

        Thanks O.P. jv bought 5.

        • 4 actually…

          1st item arrived today.
Paid $110, selling for $183 today, normal price $279.

          • +6

@jv: j.v are you really Broden?

            • +8

@DashCam AKA Rolts: No, just good timing…

(BTW, I'm not selling it for $183, it is on sale today for $183)

            • +2

@DashCam AKA Rolts: Don't feel bad. That was my initial interpretation. jv has to work on his ambiguity.

          • +4

@jv: "Nah, bought stacks of stuffā€¦"
            "4 actuallyā€¦"
2 stacks of 2 is bare minimum of stacks
            .

          • @jv: Fire sticks have good resell if you get them in a 2 for deal

  • +17

I wouldnā€™t say worst but itā€™s lacklustre at best

    • +25

      I wouldn't say worst

      Which year was worse though?

This was only the 7th prime day in Aus (started in 2018) and they have progressively diminished, so I can't see how it wasn't the worst. We used to get big discount lightning deals hourly (they are completely gone now) and deep discount regular items on a wide variety.

      • +1

        Youā€™re right my bad

I was thinking of Amazon big deal day which imo was a big fizzle with just like 90% of content just recycled ā€˜specialsā€™ - I remember because I posted this deal .. which isnā€™t even that crazy

        • +3

Yeah most of the Amazon sale events are copy paste from the last one, although the hourly lightning deals used to make it more interesting. Now no lightning deals and not even as much pasting this time.

          • +1

@hamza23: yeah checked lightning deals tab at least 5 times yesterday and today but just same old junk. Honestly might as well watch the limited items amazon thread for crazy deals like normal.

        • How many days are we in? And there still hasn't been a deal that's blown my mind, not even an expired one wishing I'd paid more attention. Every year so far there's been at least one of more by now.

      • This tbh

      • +1

We used to get big discount lightning deals hourly (they are completely gone now)

Any idea why Amazon Au isn't doing those this year? Without them, it feels like something is missing…..there's no FOMO.

      2023:

      #: >What a let downā€¦. again
#: >terrible effort from amazon as usual

      2022:

#: >I am disappointed for this year again. Random pop up deals are much better than this.
#: >No bargain another disappointing year Amazon

      2021:

      #: >So far, meh.
      #: >Pretty lame deals

      2020:

#: >Seems pretty average so far to me, any stand out deals for anyone?
#: >really quite disappointing, not much better than the clickfrenzy dud event.

      2019:

#: >Amazon is still very lackluster for anything Computer related, and yeah like previous sales it's meh.
      #: >Pretty lame so far

      2018:

      #: >This is a non event so farā€¦
#: >Yeah, seriously underwhelmed at the moment.

      • +23

not much better than the clickfrenzy dud event.

I legitimately cannot remember the last time I saw a clickfrenzy event that made me go WOW!

        • +7

          Probably because it never happened

      • +6

There will definitely be some rose coloured glasses on previous prime days but I think there are also some things that are objectively worse, like the time based lightning deals that are missing this year.

I also think that Amazon Australia as a whole has been disappointing compared to the full US based store that we could access before (either via direct shipping or a forwarder), and not just because of Amazon but we also had a period of a strong exchange rate and generally less access to products from other regions so it felt more special.

        • +2

100% agree with this statement, when we had access to the full US store it was great!

Iā€™ve had multiple items in my cart for months waiting for a deal to pop up, only to be surprised (not) theyā€™ve been jacked a day or two before the eventā€¦ this is mostly by third parties.

I honestly feel like calling them out ahem, TP Link ā€¦..

        • +4

It's just a small selection of Amazon's home brand, some Colesworth staples and otherwise a sea of rebranded AliExpress reseller junk sold at 2-5x markup. They let it devolve into a cesspool right out the gate and don't appear interested in cleaning it up.

      • That what happens when things get progressively worst every year.

  • +10

I'm not sure if my expectations are too high, but it feels like Prime Day's discounts get less appealing every year.

Discounts on smaller ticket / household items are roughly on par with the discounts Amazon does throughout the rest of the year to price-match other retailers. Meanwhile, there are a handful of substantial discounts on big ticket items, but they're not particularly better than deals you find on OzBargain year round.

    • I'm not sure if my expectations are too high,

I think that is more than just you :)

    • the inflated discount percentages are deceptive.

Use 3xCamel to see the regular prices and you'll see the savings percentage drop to boring numbers real quick

  • Many discounts had in the last 12 months to drive volumes across all retailers, not gonna get much more really unless companies are even more desperate, any more doesn't work from a unit economics perspective so that is probably why.

LTM has probably seen the most discount days in market across all retailers, so people are just getting used to the discounted prices, I bet their blended realised prices is coming down too. I wouldn't expect much deeper discounts other than a few items that might stand out.

Got a couple of things, laptop RAM, NvME M2 drive. Good deals on OLED monitors as well.

  • +5

They are always bad, and Amazons way of pushing their agenda for sales on their own devices. Source: ex Amazon employee

    • +14

why would you put an option of i never buy from amazon on a poll about specifically buying from amazon, that means your input is null and void.

      • +12

All ozbargain polls should include an extra voting option titled

I just need a random button to press

        • +3

Pretty sure it's usually labelled as 'Bikies'

      • -3

You mean "an option to test the null hypothesis "

  • Going to lose $232 sales because of this poll -Jeff

  • +3

Noticed prices started inflating since last 2 weeks and most items are back to prices 2-3 weeks ago, Prime day in nutshell…at least for me

Still waiting for decent deals on items I had been waiting/holding on to buy

  • +4

most stuff on amazon on a good day is rubbish or literally just aliexpress dropship crap, this doesn't surprise me at all.

  • +10

I always have low expectations from Prime day so Iā€™m never disappointedā€¦

    • +4

It's a great mantra for life in general, not just prime day.

      • +1

        I always say ā€˜no expectations no disappointmentā€™

        • +2

          I always say…

          What would Jimothy do?

Nothing. Great. I'll also do that then.

  • +2

Don't forget they need to hold some back for Black Friday later this year.

No need to be in a hurry to buy anything these days. Especially given bargains turn up like every month. If you are flexible and happy with substation then you are good!

  • I was able to buy most of household items at a discount. Helps a little bit with all the price increases.
Will just be a pain to cancel these S&S

  • +1

Black Friday has been a bit meh lately also

  • I kind of don't mind a high priced prime day with high % cashback - that way I get a large amount of cashback, and then price match with 28degrees to the lowest I can … ;)

  • +3

Iā€™ve never really paid much attention to Prime Day in the past but I picked up a dehumidifier I needed for $100 less than what I wouldā€™ve paid if I bought it last week so I consider that a win. Could it have been cheaper? Sure, but Iā€™m still happy with the purchase.

I donā€™t buy many ā€œthingsā€ so I donā€™t pay much attention to sales when they roll around but I wouldnā€™t be surprised if theyā€™re getting worse overall. For example the Steam Summer Sale used to be huge back 10 years ago, the discounts would be large and it would always be exciting to check what was on one of the Flash Sales (which I think lasted for eight hours so thereā€™d be three each day) or whatever but thatā€™s no longer the case. I think a higher rate environment on a global scale is contributing to the enshittification of sales in general, I could be wrong though.

I'm glad I didn't resub to Amazon Prime. I got targeted for that $20 off of purchase after Prime subscription, and the $15 with a purchase over $100 cashback from CommBank Yellow, and still thought it isn't worth it anymore.

Cancelled my subscribtion early this year and somehow they charged my card for Prime subsciption to someone else's Amazon account. They admitted to the issue, but refused to refund me. I had to chase it with my bank and it took like 4 months before I got my money back. Not putting my credit/debit card info into Amazon again. I have a few hundred gift cards on my account and as soon as I use those up then I'm done with them.

    • +2

      Cancelling saves cents. Cheers

      • Indeed! I'm one of those folks who impulse purchase shite they don't need. Saving both space and cents after cancelling. šŸ˜„

This must be super rare. I have never experienced any such rookie glitch with Amazon ever and I have had Prime for ages. On a sidenote, their customer support is always exceptional (probably the best in the world, among any companies - not just retail).

      • That was the only time I've had that issue too, and I had Amazon AU account since they first came here, and another one many years before that. It's just that when things are good they're great. Just hope you don't run into such an issue. After that happened to me I Googled it and it seems there are a number of people who went through that problem as well, and it kinda left a bad taste in my mouth.

I just bought groecery type stuff in bulk like usual.

pretty sure prices were not ATL but I was able to stack those $10 off $20 off promos so that made them decent deals.

other stuff I was looking at just didnā€™t drop in price at all. some had red deal logo and lower price before prime day, and price skyrocketed during prime day. but to be fair these were all international items.

    • stacked all the promo codes and credits. paid $4 for $60 worth of stuff.

      • yeah but depends on how big your order total was. I did two lots of roughly $60 so promo savings were ok.

if you ordered like $200-$300 then savings are much less.

      • +1

forgot something. I basically sub prime one month when I need it, so that cost me $9.99 of that $20 promo. sometimes I get targeted for free trial again but did not this month for prime day.

so for me it was more like $10 off $59 spend, and $10 off pickup.

also didn't see the $5 off $75 Cashrewards bonus in my inbox or ozb. so yeah missed out on that. just like the 10% ($10 cap) @ chemist warehouse. <—- I actually saw this deal posted, then saw the end date was "tomorrow date" and assumed I had until tomorrow end of day but I was wrong.

        • got free trial again this year. i was eligible 3-4months ago but held off cause i had apple tv+ at the time. ya i'm only interested in prime video, don't buy a lot of stuff on amazon. $20 promo was good enough to push me over the line.

also stacked $20 first app purchase even though i'm pretty sure i've done that before. maybe it's because i uninstalled the app right after using the last promo

          • +1

            @hughes:

got free trial again this year. i was eligible 3-4months ago but held off

yeah I'm in the same boat. don't purchase massive loads usually get by with $59+ spend free shipping (but got mad when it went up from $39 spend) and only subbed to prime a few months a year.
yeah I think they got me with the "pay to sub and $10 or $20 off next purchase" about twice before. so technically it's the same thing. month of free trial ($10 off), or free trial and $10 off ($20 off). I guess when you start prime with those they have sent me less actual free trials.
actually I remember doing a few "join prime and get $10 off next order" and seeing I qualified for free month trial as well before I got targeted for pay for prime and get $ off.

for the "first" promo's I found they are just on a timer. I got the $10 off first pickup location orders about a year ago, and I got the most recent one again posted in May I think. so yeah not my first pickup but qualified after a year.

            • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm:

got mad when it went up from $39 spend

i remember when that happened. they just upped the limit without notice or warning. only found out when i was buying something

  • +4

Less competition = less bargains, simple

  • +4

Can't remember a sale event that's worth mentioning in recent times. Real deals are the ones that pop up out of the blue.

  • +2

hard drive prices still higher than my buy point
    .

  • Bought one thing. Worst for me. Luckily I had a free prime trial.

  • None of the things i bought were part of the prime sale… i was tempted on the Samsung viewfinity T6 32" Ultra widescreen for $519. But probably worst for me

  • +2

Amazon Crime Day more like it. I saw quite a number of items that were "discounted" to the price they sell for normally.

  • +1

logged in just to vote. nothing of interest

  • +3

Best thing about Prime Day was the deals from competitors eg eBay and Big W.

  • hmm no expensive figures on sale and no dash cams in stock. I want to spend and throw money around but nothing interests me. They did me a solid I guess :)

  • Every year i find i just stock up on paper towel, laundry detergent and toiletries.

  • +1

Lots of the tool deals are a ATL according to Camel, when saying that I personally bought no tools. Also some decent deals on car cleaning goods.

  • Just bought dettol body wash peach flavour lol
