    solid deal

  • +2

    Purchased.

  • Tempting offer. Time to make 4TB of HDD redundant

  • This or Lexar nm790 for 299

    • +14

The Lexar is over $100 cheaper and you won't notice the performance difference in "normal" desktop use.
Don't buy the Samsung unless you have a specific use case for the extra performance - boot times, game load times etc will be the same between the two drives.

      • +3

I wonder what specific use cases for the extra performance ?

        • +4

Drive speed tests to show off stats

        • Not sure about this particular Lexar ssd, but if it's qlc like other drives - then once you do too many writes and it's out of cache, it will slow down to a crawl.

A real pita in a home server. For most other cases, you hopefully don't end up reaching that point.

          • +3

@idjces: nm790 is 232L YMTC TLC, as good if not better than the samsung flash in the 990pro for direct-write speed once SLC cache exausts. The main diff comes from HMB vs DRAM implementations where the 990 pro is a bit faster, both are top of the line speed.

            • @HPdeskjet: Would be slightly better is you've only got one m.2 slot? Dram for general windows use between gaming seshs?

              • +1

@Micsmit: no, the HMB is just as fast as the DRAM for random read/write (general responsiveness) use cases, the controller on the nm790 is quite good.

Anything past hynix p31 gold tier / midrange pcie3 TLC is basically identical speed in system responsiveness and large game loads etc.

      • +4

Got the Lexar as a secondary drive and it is working wonderfully

    • +2

I'd be keen on the NM790 for $299. Where is it $299?

      • It the deal everyone was talking last week, but it was the heatsink version, so you had to carefully remove the heatsink, some had some trouble doing it.

        • Ah, I didn't realise. Thanks.

        • got that lexar $299 deal but havent opened it. I wonder if it should return/resell it if removing heatsink is troublesome / not easy as some make it out to be ?

          • +3

@OzFrugie: I bought the drive. There are 4 small screws which I opened with a Phillips head. Then you peel off the coolant strip. It's incredibly simple to do. If you can install a nvme, you will be able to open it.

          • +1

@OzFrugie: Very easy to do mate.

      • +1

i went looking as well and the deal had expired… so we can go for this or some other product that is not on sale anymore….

    • +1

I have NM790 4TB on my PS5. I paid $375. Works well and have not had any issues.

      • I bought a 2tb sn850x heatsink versiom for ps5 a while back, if only I waited and got the 4tb NM790 deal instead!

        • +1

upgrade the ps5 with the nm790 and use the sn850x in a usbc portable.

          • @autolux: Haha good idea but probably don't need another portable when I have a Samsung portable ssd as well. I actually don't have much games on ps5, are games larger on ps5 compared to pc and take up a lot of space?

    • nm790, less cooling required for that one as well, and suitable for laptops unlike the 990pro.

  • Do AmazonUK deals work for any of the cashback offers?

    • -1

      warranty would be the issue

      • That's Amazon, if you're nice enough in the chat they will "as an exceptional gesture" refund you or send you another unit

        • another unit ha

I'm thinking no for this value

          • @Poor Ass: Bought a Jabra Elite 10 about 6 months ago now, it, ahem, stopped working by itself 2 months ago totally without any fault of my own (cough), spoke with Amazon support for about 5 minutes. They didn't even ask me to return the broken ones, they just sent me a new set. I know it's not a like for like comparison, but it does happen. It honestly took me longer waiting for the chat rep to join the conversation than it did for them to work through the warranty of it and send me a replacement.

            • @aaronsd: I've have had replacements too that I didn't need to return but for a $4XX you reckon they would?

              • @Poor Ass: @Poor Ass Yeah tbh, I think you guys are right, Amazon might back out of it real fast after it's been about a year or so from the sale. Really don't know how they would do in long-term RMA. The Jabra was $3xx when I got it (god dammit I see it on Prime Day sales right now for much cheaper than I got it lol, well it's a decent pair of earphones if you were looking for one…)

        • I wonder for how long? If local warranty is 5 yrs I doubt they'd match that

  • Any chance for amazon au ssd deals for aus warranty? And would 4tb be too much for a gaming drive or good size?

    • +1

I have heaps of game and not even 50% on my 2tb. That for sure is overkill.

      • Was just always afraid it won't be enough space even though I don't have many games and not sure if most will even take up much space. Larger capacity will last more write cycles and work for longer though yeah?

        • +3

          It should indeed!

Also keep in mind a 4TB SSD works out to 3.67TB. Most SSDs run best with some extra space - I'd say leave a couple hundred gigs free.

          Overall, a good purchase :)

          • @nea ozb: This was the reason I got the NM790 4TB in the first place. My Samsung OEM SSD was already 95% filled, which is obviously unhealthy, so I got this one just for the enormous extra space and to reduce the load on the other boot drive.

            • @indojo24: I have a ssd boot drive and always try to avoid putting too many things on the drive to preserve the drive health. Not sure if I am just worrying too much.

          • @nea ozb: With limited nvme slots on the motherboard, always tempted to get a bigger capacity drive to not worry about not having enough space! Haha too tempting.

  • Great, thanks. Was looking for a ps5 hdd

  • ty Got 1

  • What happens when you clone your hard drive and then turn on both PC's at once? Does one of the OS stop working?

    • Yes and no. Both computers will work however one of the Windows keys will be seen as invalid when the OS contacts Microsoft’s activation servers at boot.

      • can they both keep working or one eventually doesn't work

        • Both will continue to work, but the one with an invalidated key will display a watermark asking for activation and have restricted Windows customisation settings.

          • @Jai:

            have restricted Windows customisation settings

but you can still run regular programs and use office suites right?

      • Both computers probably won't work unless they're the same hardware - one of them will have a billion driver issues. You can't generally move a Windows install between dissimilar machines.

        • +1

That hasnt been particularly true for at least 5 years, maybe 10. Windows is awfully good at it nowadays. Particularly if it can see the internet.

Still, it's recommended to reinstall every few years as maintenance, and most people don't, so it's a good opportunity.

    • Linux ? No.

  • Thinking of using this as an external drive. Which enclosure would you recommend between the Acasis and the Satechi 40GPs enclosures?

  • great price!

  • +1

20c more than the previous deal, no deal :P

  • +2

The WD Black 4TB SN850X is also on sale at the same price here https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B0B7CQ2CHH/ref=ppx_od_d…

in case anybody misses out on the Samsung SSD

    • Is the Samsung a faster/better drive?

      • +2

        Yes

        • +1

          Samsung 990 Pro then SN850X

          • @Spizz: I remember the SN850x was faster than the 980 Pro but didn't know if 990 Pro brought much upgrade!

  • Too Broke to buy bargain

  • I think I got the bottom for ssds at $50/tb, now it’s $5/tb waiting room

  • For all gamers and people that aren’t relying on SSDs as their livelihood (think photographers, YouTubers etc) the Lexar NM790 is far superior deal.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/852867

Been single sided 4TB TLC NVME SSD, the NM790 is also the super choice for upgrading internal laptop 2280 form factor SSDs. I got one for my Lenovo Legion Pro 7i without a heat sink

  • Any good budget friendly ways to buy a couple of these and turn them into a SFF NAS?

    • Yes, just buy a Micro Dell/HP/Lenovo with 2 x M.2 slots, install Rockstor/TrueNAS and voila.

But using such expensive drives for a NAS is crazy, you're limited by the 1Gb of your network.

      • Tbh I wouldn’t buy these drives I will get cheaper ones. Just thought I’d ask the general question.

  • I am planning to use this as a external SSD in a enclosure to save photos and other documents.

Is it a good SSD to use in the NVMe enclosure for saving photos?

I have two enclosures bought from Aliexpress. Which enclosure will be good for this SSD?
    1) ORICO M2 NVMe SSD Enclosure 10Gbps SSD Box
    2) JEYI Visual Smart M.2 NVMe / SATA 10 Gbps Enclosure

  • Thanks! I just cancelled one I ordered locally for a solid 80 dollar discount now. They are even cheaper in the USA but you get stung by GST and shipping. This deal was just what I was after!!! Great timing.

  • Expired, back to $542

    • Nope it still says $413.39 AUD with 5 left in stock right now 😎

      • I think it's gone again.

  • Mine arrived with nothing in the box :(
