[Pre Order] Lexar NM790 4TB M.2 2280 PCIe Gen 4×4 NVMe SSD with Heatsink $299 + Delivery ($0 to Metro) @ BPC Technology

1090

Stock update: Coming Soon: 12/07/2024

Big shout out and thank you to our local OZBargain Lexar Rep for organising this and making it possible. Lexar are doing a short, very limited, EOFY deal, via their local retailers.

You can safely and carefully take out the heatsink and use it as is. Inside the heatsink is the exact same drive as the non-heatsink version. The warranty sticker is inside the heatsink, and stuck on the drive itself, so as long as you don't remove that sticker, it will remain under warranty.
The warranty is immediately void for user-induced damaged (not for removing the heatsink).

YouTube Promo on the drive.

Get this one merge cause idk why someone mark it oos https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/852867

    • I agree, same price as previously posted deal and it is mentioned in the description - all the comments/reviews are very helpful for people to read up on too.

Just a technicality that OP didn't include the other stores in that title - so mods will most likely let this stay up.

    • +7

Mods were the one that marked it as OOS.
Because the original deal was for Metrocom.
Asked me to post this as a new deal. 🤷‍♀️
Thanks for putting those links in here, I'm sure others will read this.

  • This or 4TB Samsung Evo SSD? 🤔

    • Which EVO?

There a few and all depends on what you using it for - data, OS or apps.

      • I was talking about this SATA model/deal : https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/853592

        • what are you going to use it for?

        • I have the same question

I assumed m.2 would be better

          • +1

@teacherer: Important to know that M2 Is not the difference. M2 is a physical size/format (the stick), and there's a few sub-formats within it.

Sata vs NVME are different protocols. One is much faster.

SATA M2 drives are rarer, but still around. There was a brief period when the stick format came out where boards had, for instance, an M2 SATA and an M2 NVME port. People would go and buy 2x nvme and be left wondering why one just wouldnt work. Etc

        • +1

This if you can - you get the benefits of m.2 speeds, and the TBW is 2.4PB vs 3PB.

  • Is this good????? I need one

  • Is there a video instruction on how to remove the heatsink?

    • +2

I’d like to see this too. I just bought one because of the earlier post, but it’s not as easy to remove as it looks.

I unscrewed the case and removed the bottom housing easily (there was some very light adhesive but it just popped straight out). But the top part of the heatsink seems like it’s glue on and I don’t want to force it, there’s a grey thermal pad (?) in the middle that its stuck to.

      • +1

Thanks for this lucky I didn't buy it I was worried this exact same scenario would happen. I'll wait for the no enclosure to go on sale

        • Not gonna happen. This is a special deal, for this model only.

      • I've seen the video of Corsair SSDs where after they remove the casing, they just roll the thermal pad like a carpet. Not sure if this applies here. Others mentioned heating up the SSD with hairdryer. I'd love to know if anyone less has been successful in removing the heatsink.

      • Update: I tried it again with a more force, the top heatsink and thermal pad pulled offer neatly. The drive underneath still has the Lexar branding on it, same as the non-heatsink version. Sorry, this is too late for the deal, but hopefully it helps someone in the future.

    • off the drive. Piece of cake. Just unscrew 4 small screws and that's it.

Source: i have this exact drive with heatsink.

  • Yes, It is good.

    • Good, is it?

      • is good? it

        • It is? Good.

Oh well, I guess you can just go with MWave, since they continue to recognise WA after the Great Emu War.

Their free delivery postcode list for orders over $250 (Man I feel like this threshold used to be sub-100…)
      https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/14VZRD4wHgi1Cqg-8Djpz…

    • -7

Nope im metro wanted to order 6 for my nas, emailed them simply no free shipping to WA so i cancelled my order on principle ordered elsewhere

      • +2

On principle that you expect even further discount? Yeah it's a pittance but you're really being over-privileged.

If I was them I'd block you on principle.

        • -5

Whatever some idiots on here who can't read.

          • +3

@Wayne7497: Ah, now I get it. Your post said nothing of their free shipping. Yes that's silly. Your fault for not explaining what you meant though.

      • giggles and we wonder why the world is aflame.

  • +1

any good enclosure to go with this?

    • This one would do nicely :)

      • I meant enclosure as portable disk?

        • Depends what you want to use it for. The 40gbps ones are on the expensive side at around $160. The 20gbps are around $60. The 10gbps are the cheapest for around $30. The 40gbps offers 2.5 times the performance of the 10gbps but requires usb4.0 to reach that potential. Not sure how big a difference the 20gbps is.

  • +1

Ordered this from Mwave on Monday 24th and still haven't shipped. Stuck on processing. Hope I can cancel and order from BPC.

    • You're not alone, my friend.

      • +1

Really annoying as it's holding everything else in my build up.

        • I just got word from Mwave CS. Here's what they have to say:

          Hi #^S&%&)(^&,

We have received the stock to fulfill your order and we are currently in the process of unpacking the items received from our supplier - It is currently in the receiving section of the warehouse. We will allocate the items to your order ASAP. An email notification will be sent to you once the order has been completed.
Please note - due to a backlog in our warehouse, an additional 1 business day will be required for unloading, receiving, and allocation before dispatch.

          Kind regards

Looks like it's gonna be next week, unless they also move inventory on weekends.

          • +1

@indojo24: Just called them and they said likely to be shipped out on Monday.

            • +1

@Phlume: I guess that's when I'll be picking it up as well. Bummer.
I had also planned to order two Crucial 16GB RAM sticks from them, but I think I'll go to Umart or elsewhere.

        • @Phlume That's bad luck mate, I ordered from Mwave on Monday too at about 4:00pm, paid via Bpay and it was dispatched on Friday just before 5pm. It was showing as in-stock with supplier at the time.

          • +1

            @madd-dog: Mine arrived today

            • @buyer-123: Nice! I was carded on Tuesday morning, picked it up Wednesday after work (Auspost is pretty quick in my area).
Having had a few M2 SSDs without heatsinks I was surprised by the weight of this thing, seems like a solid heatsink

    • Ordered 24th June form bpc and arrived today (Sydney).

      • Dang. Should have ordered from BPC :(

        • +2

Yeah, if it's "In stock at supplier" at mwave or similar, check the other sites first.

I got bit by this once, a NUC bundle didn't have the SSD in stock so it took over a week to dispatch from them. :( (Ignoring the fact that NUC's are pretty poor value now as well compared to those $200 N100 boxes now)

    • Weird, mine arrived today from MWave, but I did order mine a couple hours after the deal went live

      • I assume you used credit card or paypal w/ 1% charge? Others who paid through bank transfer and BPay could only have their order processed the day after. By that time, MWave never had any left in their stock and it changed to "Available at Supplier".

    • Same, however just got shipping notification.

    • mine arrived friday (mwave order).

  • Got one from Metrocom from the last deal, it arrived today

    HMB ruins the deal

    • NM790 1TB Crystal DiskMark Results

If your main concern is the use of HMB, then obviously Crystal DiskMark isn't the right test to show the issue. However, Crystal DiskMark does expose another issue with this SSD. That said, most people probably don't care.

      • Are you able elaborate on what this other issue is?

        • +3

These are nit-picking since PCIe gen 4 x4 SSDs are overkill for most of us. Basically, other than the use of HMB, to keep the cost down, the controller is not a high end flagship one.

          • From the sequential mixed (read + write) results, you can see the sequential mixed results are subpar.
          • Its 4K random write latency isn't great (the screenshot I posted only shows the bandwidth results).
          • SSD makers can only optimise its performance against a selected number of block sizes for this controller, rather than a wide range of it (so the ATTO results, you can see some inconsistency result).

We cannot expect to have super duper performance at the lowest price. Controllers supporting HMB are normally only doing 4 channels. The Maxio controller pushes the bandwidth to the max, but it just isn't the most powerful chipset. No HMB SSDs can defy odds in tests where HMB SSDs struggle, but those cases are not for home usage. Another minor gripe is the SSD's performance with ASMedia USB4 chipset based enclosures. The sequential read performance is great, but the write performance is disappointing (so is the mixed performance).

Because I own NM790, I do try to be more critical on it mainly because I don't want to sound like because I own it / picked it, it is really good. However, personally, I think it is good value for money at 2023 discounted price.

          • @netsurfer: You sound like you know what you talk about.
What would be your picks for best performance and value ssd irrespective of the price?

            • +3

@OzFrugie: This drive is absolutely fine for all normal use cases.
If you want good performance and value, then this is the drive for you.

  • +1

Shit that's a good deal. I have the 2tb version. Great drive, will use it as boot drive in next amd 9700x build.

    • -2

Not the best for a boot drive dram less

      • +2

DRAM doesn't affect boot times - there are very little differences in boot times between the fastest and slowest SSDs.

        • I didn’t mention anything about boot time, no one really cares about boot time, even SATA SSD has very little difference in boot time compared NVMe.

I’m just pointing out that this isn’t the best drive for a boot drive since it’s dram less, with the constant background read write from the os, under heavy multitasking you still see some noticeable performance drop. imo this is perfect companion drive for games

          • @viper8548: I'm pointing out that its 2024.

            https://www.techpowerup.com/review/lexar-nm790-4-tb/19.html

Still, despite some weak synthetic results, the real-life performance of the NM790 is outstanding. It is able to beat every single PCIe 4.0 drive out there, with the exception of the Samsung 990 Pro, which it is able to match—very impressive! That's why real-life testing is so important. We test actual applications, not replays of disk traces, and the drive is filled to 80% of its capacity, not an empty drive like most reviewers do. This approach puts additional strain on the various algorithms and the SLC cache, just like in real-life. We've seen this in several recent reviews: times have changed and you can no longer dismiss all DRAM-less drives—the controller and how well it handles this configuration matters, too.

Note for gaming, the gap between the best of the best and worst of the worst tested drives in that article is….2 seconds.

    • +1

Yep, jump on it while you can.

You're not going to ssd these prices again in a long time.

  • I got this one last year for $279 during an ebay plus deal. Awesome drive. Perfect for storing all the games. Mine didnt have an heatsink. Definitely the best price by GB at $75 per TB

    • +1

Quite a lot of people bought the 4TB at $255

      Lexar NM790 SSD: 2TB $129, 4TB $255, 1TB $65 Delivered @ BPC Tech

      • -3

I'm holding for under $255 ;) perfectly any SSD for $50/TB or less

        • +2

          good luck mate lol

          • @CodeXD: Regret not buying a few more of the UD90 as I thought the price would keep going down. They are now controlling the SSD market price better just as what Samsung said.

        • You might be waiting a while.

      • Oh. I had a $50 ebay gift card so i got it at $227. So thats why i said $279.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Resisted last deal but so sick of my old BX500, read drops to 20MB/s even on small transfers…

    • +1

      Glad I could help!

  • +4

I got mine delivered two days ago and the heatsink feels solid and nice and sturdy. The packaging even includes a spare M2 screw so you don't have to hunt around in your motherboard box.

    • +3

Yeah, the spare M2 screw comes with it is very handy.

    • +1

      Stop screwing around guys…

  • Anyone knows if I can clone my existing NVMe drive to this drive via NVMe-USB adapter? If possible, how bad would the transfer speed be given this drive is DRAM-less?

  • +3

Thanks, bought one from BPC tonight on last day of financial year. I was on the fence while I was researching like a mad man. I was comparing this to SN850x, P41 and 990 Pro. Reading all the reviews and comments relating to this drive. Cheapest was P41 2TB for $207 on Amazon at this time but for an extra 90 odd dollars, I can get double storage and performance is comparable.

I see so many idiots complaining about this having no DRAM when in reality, 95% of people using a drive with DRAM will not even notice a difference, nor will they take advantage of the DRAM available in any meaningful way.

Now, if Samsung and WD had better competitive pricing, then I may consider leaning towards them, but the price difference is too large at the moment when real life results show that this drive is slightly behind SN850x and 990 Pro and in some cases comparable.

I will using this as my main/boot drive.

    • Beauty.
Yes, good call. Hardly noticeable. I had the S 990 Pro 2TB for $207, that's my main boot drive, this will be my 2nd storage, and then a 16TB. Happy Days.

    • Let me know when you get a notification when it's shipped, - I also ordered on 30/06 but haven't received any email update so far. Unfortunately checked out as guest so can't login and see my status.

      • +1

I replied to the confirmation email you get after you order, which is the sales email address. I emailed them this morning, asking for an update and they said they were expecting shipment on the 4th, and will ship shortly after stock arrives.

If you visit the listing on their website, it says stock is coming soon, 4/7/24, which is what they told me.

I'm pretty sure the listing didnt mention anything about a back order when i ordered, which has annoyed me tbh. If I knew they didnt actually have the stock, I probably would have not ordered. BPC is in Melbourne and so am I. Abit disappointing.

        • Thanks for the info. Yeah it said in stock for me when I had ordered. Im guessing there was a rush on that day and they went out of stock. Luckily for me my build is already complete, just wanted extra storage, but likewise I'm also in Melbourne and am rather impatient when it comes to shipping so I'd much rather click and collect.

        • Just got am email saying stock checked, though not yet shipped.

  • +1

Will this be good for PS5 expansion slot?

    • +1

You can use it for a PS5, yes.

  • Missed out. So 😭

    • @zcream it's on backorder now at $299

    • Is back in stock!

  • Got mine, stripped the heat sink off and stuck it into my Gigabyte Laptop, Blue Screen (BSOD).
Downloaded the program DRIVEREASY (7 day free trial) and found my laptop needed a Raid update that wasn't being picked up elsewhere.
Did that, plugged it back in. Works a treat !!!!!!!

  • +1

On backorder (says: coming soon 12/7) at $299.

  • +1

PSA - don't order from Mwave if you want it fast.
I ordered on 29 June and other than the order confirm, have not had any comms update.
No status update, no apology for being late, etc.
Would give them 1 star comms rating on fleabay feedback

    • Yea I got mine from Metrocom.

  • +4

Thanks for lordra to post all these.
If you interested to see some other deals, post in the forum or reply in Ozbargain.
I do read those, and I will do my best to bring deals :D
