  • Thanks OP, I'm waiting for another round of those refurb Dell ones - does this have usb-C power output?

    • Nope. 2x HDMI and 1x DP

    • $20 hub will do usb-c PD and HDMI out to monitor, just stick it onto the back of the monitor.

      • The point is more powering the Laptop with 1 cable, most laptop already has PD/HDMI port to go direct anyway,

        • +2

Yes, any cheap DP/HDMI alt mode hub with PD will do this.

Only one usb-c cable connects into the laptop. This IS a single cable solution.
The single cable will charge the laptop AND pass HDMI/DP to the hub.

The hub will connect to the monitor over HDMI and accept a USB-C charger input, which is then passed through to the laptop.

          https://www.amazon.com.au/NOVOO-Multiport-Adapter-Charging-C…

literally anything like that will work, no idea why people keep trying to find usb-c monitors when its $100+ upcharge for 30 seconds and plugging in 2 cables to do the exact same thing, most usb-c monitors esentially just have one of these attached to the inside of the nice plastic shell…

the only valid ones are the daisy-chainable thunderbolt 3/4 monitors like the LG Ultrafine 5K lineup, which you can't actually replicate using hubs, but those are $2000+ (and actually justified, unlike the lower-end "usb-c" monitors that are overpriced for no good reason.)

          • @HPdeskjet: No, that would be 2 power cables. Point of having USB-C monitors is to have 1 power cable powering both the monitor and the laptop.

            • @lomie: basically all USB-C monitors except the portable ones require a seperate power cable into the monitor.

The usb-c is only for connecting to the laptop, it dosen't power the monitor.

              • @HPdeskjet: Power goes to the monitor. Then power goes via the USB-C cable to the laptop. Same USB-C cable is used for the video from the laptop to the monitor. Therefore, there is only one power cable and it's going to the monitor. Do you get it now?

                • @lomie: So you'd pay $150 extra for running one cable instead of 2 cables into the monitor on initial setup, which is hidden on the back and you will never have to touch again.

Yes, I get it now, just assumed you meant laptop side intially because it would be otherwise absurd to complain about monitor side…

Well, everyone is free to do whatever with their money I guess.

                  • @HPdeskjet: It's a convenience thing, especially for those who work between office and home. Then there is only a need for 1 laptop power supply and only the laptop is travelling between the two locations. It starts becoming a chore if you have to also pack up the laptop power supply everyday, for example.

                    • @lomie: That's fair enough, if you don't want to carry around the stock charger, an additional PD charger is like $20-30 which in combo with the $20 hub starts getting a bit more expensive.

I guess if it's a workplace panel that makes more sense.

                      • @HPdeskjet: Usually, it's the home monitor that needs USB-C. The full PSU/dock is at work to run dual monitors. This only requires plugging in a single USB-C cable.

Then at home, just plug in a single USB-C cable from the monitor. None of that wrapping up cables of the PD charger. Just close the laptop and go.

        • @HPdeskjet, That’s exactly the point, this hub setup is totally irrelevant, you simply plug your laptop with the power supply and then do a HDMI to the monitor, no need for $25 hub.

          • @Noslee: But that's two cables, and people apprently want single cable connections to the laptop, likely for macbook or something with no hdmi.

    • No USB C unfortunately. Would have been nice. There is an LG one on eBay with USB C which is reasonably discounted. - but nothing like the Dell deal

  • +1

I can vouch for this. Compared with the Dell I used to have (replaced as it became faulty after 2 years), it has better colours by default but does not automatically switch the HDMI input port, so have to manually change the source via the monitor controller. A bit of a bummer there but I am betting that it will last as long as my FHD LG monitor, nearly 10 years old and still going strong.

    • @ram4ram are these VESA mount and can put on monitor arm instead of stand?
