What's The Best Way to Get Cheap Netflix, Now That Most Options Have Been Nerfed?

Hi all,

After seeing the numerous forum posts and deals regarding Netflix cracking down on VPN deals, is there a certified way that is the cheapest as of now? Or are most of you guys on different region plans, just hoping you don't get the boot?

I should mention I have access to a Turkish Apple ID if that helps.

    popcorn time

    • +2

Yeah, I still don't understand how they get most of the latest movie. But it works. I have also been usenetting lately.

      • +9

whats to not understand? when you pirate content you have access to everything.

        • Yeah agree, what I meant was, sometimes I find in popcorn movies that have just been released in the movie theatres. This is mind blowing. I understand that in the pirate world nothing is impossible 😅

      • Popcorn downloads torrents and plays/streams them. Not that complicated, clever way to make torrents more accessible. Keeps buffering for me though.

    Stremio/torrentio/RD (Real Depro)

    • -3

I should mention this is for a family member. I've told them about this combo and they didn't approve of it :(

      • +15

didnt approve of stremio/torrentio/rd ….but potentially ok to use a vpn trick… wow

I should mention I have access to a Turkish Apple ID if that helps.

        • +1

Lol, I know. I'm the only techy sorta person in my household and while they think Stremio is illegal and won't let me set it up, somehow they're okay with circumventing region pricing.

        • +27

To be fair one is illegal, the other is simply against Netflix terms of service (ie not illegal)

          • -4

            @djsweet: how is it illegal?

            • @belongsinforums: Stremio is torrenting via rd, without permission of the copywrite owners, so yeah that’s def illegal.

            • @belongsinforums: Stremio you are pirating content. breaking netflix terms of services while it might get your account cancelled isn't actually illegal.

              • @gromit: which law?

                • @belongsinforums: seriously you have never heard of copyright law?

                  • +1

@gromit: would love to read the law you're referring to

                    • -1

@belongsinforums: well it isn't a secret, go look it up.

                      • +13

@gromit: belongsinforums is right though. Sure you could be sued by copyright owners for infringing their copyright but it's not a criminal offence in Australia to download and view copyrighted contents for private use. The Copyright Act only criminalises copyright infringements that involve commercial dealings.

                        • +1

@xers: Correct criminal no, but civil yes for violating the copywriter act of 1968. Unlikely a consumer would be targeted / prosecuted, refer the Dallas buyers club saga.

                          • @UltimateAI: The organisation had already tried it in other countries making some kid pay $25,000. I think he was in the UK. And, I think a single mother copped a huge fine for her son in the US. They were savage and the judge was not impressed. He ordered the ISPs to hand over details of the people who downloaded it, and told the organisation to pursue the people involved for the download fee ($10). Nothing happened.

                            • @saveye: I suspect you are referring to the "Dallas Buyers Club" case, I cited above, believe we are saying the same thing.

                        • @xers: True, as long as you're not torrenting you'll be fine, because torrenting is simultaneous distribution. I got a letter from my ISP years ago for doing that.

                          • @BoltThrower: Or use a vpn

                            • +1

@bohn: Yeah, wasn't really a thing back then. The real trouble came from the old days of hairspray coated stamps, mailing 5 1/4 floppies in those cardboard envelopes you could turn inside out. The same people sending back and forward, reusing stamps. Yarrr

                            • +1

@bohn: Tbh sometimes I wonder if the need for a VPN is overblown by VPN providers to sell their products but I have been sailing the high seas since the Limewire days using all kinds of methods across several different ISPs and have never once received any letters.

                              • +1

@xers: yeah, I know people that have received, so I guess it's luck of the draw.

Thing is, it's cheap to get a vpn, look at the 100% cashback deals on Nord etc.

                                • +1

@bohn: Oh yea I do have Nord. But the only thing I’m using it for is to bypass regional pricing and geolocked contents, as it halves my connection speed when it’s on.

                                  • @xers: I basically Max out my gbit connection with it

                          • +1

@BoltThrower: You can set your upload rate to zero with torrents. Then your only receiving and not distributing anything.

      • Tell them to pay full price then and stay out of it.

You can just Chromecast from RD when you use it.

    • +3

      Real Depro? Any good?

      I use RealDebrid

      • +7

D/oh me too, I've got Real Deprlexia.

        • +1

I was going to say, I googled it and nothing came up about it. hehe

      • Realdebrid is subscription based right?

    • how do those compare with radarr/sonarr/kodi ?

      • They work a bit differently. IIUC radar/sonar downloads files to your local server whereas stremio 'uploads' to RD (if you've set it up that way, otherwise it streams directly but without RD your IP address is exposed to public scrutiny) and you then stream your content from RD. Not sure if stremio makes use of usenet or not?

So if you don't mind storing files locally then stick with what you are comfortable with, if you just want to watch and forget the take a look at stremio.

Also if your NBN isn't up to scratch you might have trouble streaming 4K content so downloading might be a better option if you watch 4K stuff. (We still have our Panasonic 1080P plasma so don't need 4K)

(I'm sure the young 'uns can provide more technical details for you) :)

    • It's good but buffering is a PITA

      • Yeah I notice it on 4K but 1080p seems ok. We're only on FW though.

    • you mean real debird

      • Yes. :)

        • +1

idk if its me but when i watch a series, one ep finished and its time to select the one after, i go back, select for example episode 2, and it plays another episode like 7 or 8, this has happened many many times and its annoying, it only happens on tv not pc

    • Wow. Thank you for this. Literally just signed up to it last night for a 6 month period. It's amazing! However seems to struggle with playback on my recently OzB acquired Samsung A9+ 64GB/4GB tablet.

      • +1

        How's your internet speed?
Try streaming 1080 or 720p files instead of 4K?

        • Internet speed is pretty mediocre with NBN HFC. I was watching on 4K so will try lower resolutions. It was 1am by the time I got it all setup and needed to go to sleep. 4K works perfectly fine on my Pixel 8 Pro, so I assume the internet connection is OK.

          • +1

@eek: Maybe, though a 4K stream directly from YT or Prime would probably have a clearer path than one coming through the RD pipeline?
I'm just guessing though, we're on FW here as I said and 4K buffers a lot through this setup but seems OK for most YT vids.

            Cheers

          • +1

@eek: The Samsung A9+ is probably not powerful enough for 4k streams, especially with 4GB ram.

      • I just followed that guide and it took like 5 minutes, so easy ! I think I'll cancel all my subscriptions after setting this up.

Insane quality and no buffering. Thank you !

        • @Falcon5856
how much is the real debri subs price? and i dont get this. where are the movies and tv shows located, why we need realdebrid?

          • @CyberMurning: It costs 25 AUD for 6 months(180 days) of real debrid - if you follow the steps in the guide and do it in order it all links up and all you need to do at the end is log into your stremio account on any device.

The movies and shows are sourced from Torrent sites but the files themselves are downloaded to real debrid and you then pull from their server which means you don't even need to use a vpn !

            • @Falcon5856: ah i see so its like our download manager but in the cloud we still need to find what we want to watch and let RD downloads then we stream. (or they already downloaded and ready to stream? so all shows from netflix are there already?)
hmm but i like to keep some movies in my own drive. can we download to our local hdd later?

  • +45

    Hahar me hearties!

    • +7

Aye, the way things been going, many will be heading back to the seas my friend… They've forgotten how they made everyone come back to port methinks..

      • +3

Indeed. Cheap affordable services made it just easier to sub. Now all of them are raising prices, cracking down on password sharing and including ads. So back to raising the skull and bones and also being very specific of what to obtain. Unsubbing also removes the doom scrolling and wasting time tbh. Go do other more productive things.

        • +1

Literally this! Streaming was meant to be cheaper and easier than Pirating, so everyone paid the "convenience fee".

Now it's impossible to work out what you need to watch certain things, and the cost is ridiculous, so we all go back to pirating.

They all need to learn from god Gaben with PC games

My NAS lay dormant for some time.

Since Netflix claimed my credit card had fraudulent activity after signing up via kenya, they kicked me off, my NAS has been getting a great workout since.

  • +7

I'm still using the Turkey account, however, perhaps my blessing in disguise was that I could never originally get my credit card to work. No links to AU (?)

However, the only first world annoyance is that I am required to get Turkish Netflix Gift Cards to pay for the service.

    • +2

      Same here

      • Connected via vpn for watching? Logged in on tv?

        • No, just for redeeming gcs

          • @spackbace: That's how I was subscribed too but it got cancelled on me

            • @isthisreallife22: Could be a matter of time for myself and @spackbase

I don't need/use VPN for watching and logged in on multiple devices. Perhaps I should log in via VPN to demonstrate that there is an account there that accesses it locally.

Did you at any point use a credit card for payment?

    • Same, don’t use vpm for watching or redeeming gift cards. Getting a bit pricey now, so won’t be fussed if they kick me off, already have stremio + rd.

    • Same

    Yarrr

Netflix was wonderful when it first came out here in 2015. It showed that most people were happy to pay a reasonable price for good service and convenience. But it was too good to last. Greed killed it.

The sharemarket pushed the price of Netflix shares up ten times, but subscribers up only 4X, pressuring the company to dramatically increase revenue. At the same time, the market became fractured, the movie catalog size dropped. Prices up, value and convenience down.

Movie piracy plummeted in Australia after 2015, but is now well and truly climbing again, no surprise.

streaming services dont understand the only thing stopping the tower of cards imploding on itself is that streaming via a paid service is only SLIGHTLY more convenient than the other methods of consuming media.

stremio/torrentio/rd combo blows my mind and continues to do so.
like…not only was it insanely easy to follow a guide…but the user experience is actually freaking awesome and seamless?

      • +2

        streaming services dont understand the

Of course they understand; if you can understand it then someone who is hired to understand it will also understand it

They dont care because they are there to maximise profits (and thus bonusses and job keeping) for the next 12 months or next 3 years. If it all falls down in 5 years what issue is it for management, they will be long gone.

      • +1

Please share a link to said guide. TIA

    • +8

There's even a word for it

The problem is that they're currently still increasing revenue with all these price hikes, reduction in quality and reduction in sharing so they'll keep doing it. However once revenue starts to drop, it'll already be too late to fix it.

It might take a decade, but eventually it'll wind up like US cable TV providers. People overpaid for it for way, way too long but once it started to fall it absolutely plummeted.

      • +1

climb up the stairs, jump off the cliff.

    • +2

Agreed, but you also missed that they stopped creating original content worth watching.

      • That's a shame. There were so many good original shows earlier on.

    • +2

Do you have any evidence of that or just anecdotal? I might find it a good read if you have sources

    • The correct term is Ensh1tt1f1cat1on: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enshittification

New stores and services start out being really good to the consumer, then good to sellers, and finally they ^$*@ everyone over to enrich themselves. Discount codes dry up, fees increase, prices increase, limits like storage space and traffic allowable decrease, and so on. Free software becomes freemium then finally subscription only. Single player games require you to be always connected the internet and have phone home DRM like Denuvo. Music and ebooks and audiobooks are wrapped in DRM and/or watermarked instead of being distributed in a royalty free open format; you need to use special (illegal) tools to remove the DRM from things you have purchase to use it in another ecosystem..
