      • Thanks. I have a short black in the morning and flat white in the afternoon. One of the reasons I wanted to update was better grinding than BBE and better frothing (BBE has a lot of room for improvement here IMO).

    • I did upgrade from Breville Smart Grinder to Mignon Specialita.
I am not a sensitive snob so I can't tell if flavour is improved much.
But the flow is more consistent so the grind quality must be better.
Also Eureka is much much quieter (and faster) - with Breville Smart Grinder I had to pause any conversation while I am grinding. :))
Breville Smart Grinder sounded like it is really struggling grinding hard substance. Eureka sounds so effortless so I am sure it will last way way longer. :)

    • I have this specific one and a BDB, and find that the fit isnt very snug. This results in grinds running up the sides.

      • interesting - could be returned if it doesnt fit

You can get a 58.25mm (or 58.15? can't recall) version

I don't use this style of distributor anymore, I just WDT and tamp.

          • +1

@The Hobo: Another vote here for WDT and tamp, so many nice WDT tools out there now

BDB has 58.3mm portafilter I believe. Try find something for that instead.

  • I've got the Delonghi EC885 (cost $150) and have been pondering whether to step up to the BDB. For those who've upgraded to the BDB, was it worth it? Is the coffee you're pulling significantly better compared to a machine that costs 5-9 times less?

    • +1

I haven't come from a previous machine, but I have found that the coffee I get from the BDB is closer to what I get from a cafe than the semi-auto machine at my office, or the pressurised baskets would provide in other machines.

Basically - maybe? If you like the coffee from teh Delonghi then stick with it, if you want to get more into the craft then you can upgrade to a BDB and get to play around with more options

  • If anyone experiences an issue with the frother not working.

Use a pin to poke the holes in frother tip to remove milk build up.

Happened to me twice on both my Breville Barista Pro's (first one I did a warranty return as I thought the pump was broken!)

    • Does this model not come with the frother head wrench / gom jabbar needle combo like the Bambino Plus?

      • Yeah it does.

You should be doing milk steam cleaning (liquid or powder) too

    • +4

Purge it after you froth milk to clean it. When builds up leave in jug of hot water over night. Just wiping it down doesn't purge the milk in the hold.

      • Thanks for the tips everyone!

        • I've got a leaky o-ring on my steam wand so I just stick a a cup under it to catch it. Has the added benefit of soaking the wand to remove build up.

@Intoxicoligist: I'd be getting that fixed pronto. The condensation inside can blow the triac and repairs begin to get expensive quick.

Relatively easy and cheap to fix the O-ring.

Good video posted today about coffee machine and grinder maintenance

Good machine. 3.5 years no problems. Minimum 2 double shots per day, closer to 3 on average, and the dedicated steam tank saves 15 minutes when I have the in-laws over and make 4 large coffees (all slightly different of course).

Those in east Brisbane can visit the Breville Factory Outlet in Tingalpa to try the lottery of a perfect reject. I got the BDB and Smart Grinder Pro for below $1000 in the dark times of covid, when coffee machines went crazy in price.

    • I think the Breville Factory Outlet is now closed.

      • Damn that's sad.

  • Guess we won’t see $899 with the grinder anytime soon yeah?

    • That will likely not happen anytime soon due to inflation, higher cost of manufacturing, etc… Similar to how Apple raises the price of their phones overtime.

I had one of these previously and it lasted me 6 years before the urge to try something new hit me. I went with a Gaggia Classic Pro and added a PID, pressure gauge and dimmer mod - fantastic, but my wife finds it too intimidating to use, so after 2 years I am back to the BDB. :)

    • was really debating between BDB and Gaggia Classic pro with mods, doing mods looked so fun too.

How was your personal experience in difference between these two? The only con(?) for Gaggia pro over BDB I could find was frothing milk was not possible while pouring a shot.

Yes, the GCP is a single boiler machine so steaming and brewing together isn't possible, and to be honest the stock steam wand is pretty ordinary. I upgraded to a single hole tip and upgraded the thermostat to 155c and it made a significant difference. The lack of ball joint on the wand isn't great either. If I were single and the only one using the machine, I wouldn't have had an issue continuing with it. The BDB is mostly automated and is more of an appliance than the GCP. Both good and serve their purpose. By the time you mod and upgrade the GCP, the cost is similar to a BDB anyway.

Thanks mate, got my BDB yesterday and in process of adjusting grind size and amount at the moment =D
I go through around 3-4 coffee per day so will see how BDB will go next many years hopefully.

@stilltooexpensive: It will last if you fix any leaks before they damage internals. New (current) version should be more reliable due to replacing o-rings with nuts. But still I would open the machine (4 screws I think) every few months and check inside if there is any traces of water.

On my machine I didn't put these screws back so any time I can shut the power at the power point and lift the top for inspection.

  • The black one hasn't been on sale for a long time, it's always the stainless steel finish.
