What food did the chef serve you?

  • Dont think this will last too long

    • Still available.

      • 555 sold

They seem to have a stack of them.

  • was $617 this morning from other ebay seller now the price even better

If you're on the fence, it's time to take the dive!

  • +1

Killer price, replace the internal storage with a 1TB drive for ~$100 and you're good to go.

  • Well done chef!

  • how well does Rust play on this?

    • -3

If you rub it all over the internals of the device, pretty good.

    • Defending your base while at work, I love the dedication.

      • hey you got to repel the raiders :D Rust is 24/7 once you play you live for it hehe

        • I know, it's a way of life lol. Had a kid recently so I'm often up at 2-3am gathering resources for our team when servers are more calm…

          toxic game though haha

          • @tightm8: yeah if you have a clan most people won't dare to raid you lol. unless its another clan lol.

Question to those in the know, are these now a little outdated, or about to be replaced? I'd want something like this to last me at least 5 years, low graphics is okay.

    • +4

I think most will ask you go for oled.

      • Thank you! I shall save my money

        • "Saving money" the OzB way!

          • +1

@McFly: Saving money and ozb dont exist in the same sentence

    • +4

OLED for the win, screen is just that much better

      • But if i dont play handheld?

        • you can use it as a controller stand

          • @botchie: Or a coaster. I sit my coffee on stacks of resumes.

            • @Clear: I adjust my desk height with stacks of steam decks

        • +8

Can I ask why people would anyone get this to use docked full-time? Surely a laptop or even SFF desktop would be better value?

          • +2

@Erwark: not actually much around that can hit this performance per watt. Someone off grid would get good use out of how little power this uses even when running something like cyberpunk.

      • +3

I upgraded from this and agree. That said, this price is pretty damn good for someone who might not be crazy about OLED. Battery capacity on the oled is a lot better though.

    • outdated

I mean… it really depends on budget

    • It's not the OLED model, so they are indeed a bit outdated (they're over 2 years old now, tho still run fine). And towards the second part, steam is phasing these out (it's why you see the discount in this post), so 5 years is likely a huge stretch, unless you're just planning to play some lighter games/emulation of stuff like current gen switch games.

    • These are fine. I just bought the LCD and they look fine. I imagine they aren't as good as OLED but if you've never used the OLED model, like myself, then you'll not even be able to tell.

As for outdated, I think this is a tough one. I think Steam might release them almost like console generations, and if so I think it'll still have plenty of life in it. 2 years into a console is nothing. I think it's got a bit of life in it yet, and I haven't heard anything about new models in the mix. The OLED has mostly the same specs, performance wise.

They might also treat it like PC hardware, in which case 2 years is pretty old. My gut feeling is they don't, though.

    • just get this, unless you can get an oled for under 800

    Atari Lynx. Nice!

  • +1

One day it'll be added to my collection of dust collecting muwahhaha

  • If my old eyes hard to read/see/use/play nin switch in handheld mode, i have no use of the steamdeck oled model, right? Just do docking all the time to tv

    • That's right. I'm currently playing through Kingdom Come Deliverance on and it and the text is a tad small, but it warms you when you first install it that it will be a problem. You can magnify text in game.

However other Games are perfect on it. I'm also playing Dredge and I've had no issue with the size of the text.

Great gaming machine for on the go. The OLED screen is slightly larger.

I haven't tried docking the unit.

      • Okay i didnt realised most steam users are pure handheld, not like nswitch , many are dockers. Interesting

    • Do you have an OLED switch? From what I've heard the OLED screen (either on the switch or the steam deck) can make things easier to see/better perceived detail, due to the increased contrast.

Not sure if it would make much difference if you struggle to focus on the screen in the first place though. Also this isn't the OLED model, so it's basically equivalent experience to the non-oled switch.

  • OLED deal incoming?

    One can dream lol

  • Besides display LED vs OLED is all else equal?

    • +12

      OLED ADV
No backlight shine-through issues. Blacks are blacker, colors may be crisper.
      Screen is a bit bigger (7.4" VS 7") with a 90Hz refresh VS 60
      wake-on-bluetooth is available
Slight improvement in performance, mostly in regards to temperatures (same CPU, different NM)
Somewhat better battery - AAA games an extra hour, for the easier to run titles you can get like 2-4 more hours
      Slightly faster RAM
faster wifi (if you have an AP that does 6e)

      SAME

LCD plays the same games as Deck. Performance is similar. Overall layout is the same.
Native screen resolution is the same
      Same amount of RAM
      Same OS

      • If you want to run Windows for some reason, the OLED version is missing Windows drivers for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Audio, until Valve release them.

        SteamOS is great though IMO.

    • +4

Care to share any particular reasons for this seemingly isolated opinion?

      • +7

        Can’t afford it.

Hope for another Switch OLED deal show up before end of the month.

    • I would have thought everyone on OzBargain already has owned and sold their Switch by now?

    • The difference between the OG switch and an oled switch screen is such night and day. I didn’t think it would be THAT much of an improvement, personally, but it is.

      • It is. We own both in our house. Yet I still play neither….

  • +1

Loving my OLED from the deal last week, awesome device.

  • +3

HODL valve droped the official price to USD297 or AUD $446 until July 11th. It may go cheaper

    • for non oled?

      • +3

Yes 64gb LCD in US only featured on Kotaku article as steam deck being cheaper than OLED switch

    • is there a link?

      • It was featured on Kotaku today.

    • Cool, I'm in no rush to buy latest gadget as Eldren ring exp just come out n so SMT:Revenge. I can wait another year if I have to lol

      • +7

OZB is all about buying everything at the lowest possible Price. Not to save money nor to enjoy things we buy. Main purpose is buying then regret the purchase immediately as either a cheaper price is available or you bought the old gen too late and now you are waiting for next gen at a cheaper price. Rinse and repeat

  • +2

Wow this is nice deal. LCD is still pretty good especially at this price.

  • Ok, I'm in!

Someone please find us a deal for 1TB / 2TB upgrade! Ta in advance! 😀

    • +1

Wait for the next AliExpress sale. Every few weeks.

Just checked the deal and it's back to 679.00?

  • +1

Thank your chef for me, whispering. Bought 10.

  • +1

Just got mine and setup Emudeck on it. It's awesome

  • +7

This is actually cheaper than second hand units on FB marketplace. Most sellers don't get back to you upon enquiry and if they do, usually have no invoice for warranty. No brainer!

  • Whats the likely hood of the oled model which has the 90hz screen capable of hitting its max refresh rate unless your running very old titles, then this would be the better option ?

    • +2

There is a lot more different between the OLED and LCD than just refresh rate.
Even ignoring the screen itself, the OLED model has better battery life and better cooling.

But yeah… this is a good deal.

  • This or a second hand ps5 with disc?

    • +1

Do you want to game on a TV or with a PC Handheld?

  • Wow I think this is cheaper to buy than an Odin 2

    • Only more expensive than the Odin 2 Base model. Cheaper than the Pro and Max.

  • Ok I caved and got one for emulation

  • Best gaming device I've ever owned. Only recently started using it for emulation, I get 4hrs+ battery life with this thing running GBA games.

    • Geez I would have thought you'd get a lot more battery life than 4 hours for GBA games?

  • Would using expansion card (microsd) works? Like you can comfortably play using it?

    • Yes, you can play games off MicroSD, it's just slower than internal SSD, so load times will be a bit longer.

Samsung EVO Select/Pro and Sandisk Extreme are the generally recommended cards from what I gather. (Also some Sabrent one?)

      • Awesome! Thanks.
