I had a problem where the self service terminal froze at woolworths. Gift card company (Special) said we can't help, we can only see we released payment to woolworths at this time.
I got sent around Woolworths trying to figure it out (it was for a 3 digit in dollars sum of money). Supermarkets couldn't figure it out. In the end it was the Woolworths gift cards area that can see the transaction going through and disappear into a holding account.
Special woolworths gift cards work like debit cards. I'm not sure of the arrangement for Woolworths gift cards whether Prezzee would hand over the money to woolworths upon sale. I would hope so and Woolworths is holding your money.
if many people swapped over to real cards suddenly, they'll be profitable suddenly.
Smaller margin if people swap compared to breakage (ie. expiry). You're right in that it would be recognised as profit faster but breakage is more or less profit in real life and can be predicted well before it happens.

Buy the Woolworths or BIG W eGift Card and then save it on your everyday rewards wallet. It will still be available even if prezzee goes bust.

@CodeXD: We could bail them out. And as a result of that public owns WW, right? We nationalise save the company with taxpayer's money and then we own it right? We wouldn't give it back to execs who made it go bust, right?

Companies go bust when there is no money in the bank, so where are we charging back from?
The money comes from the credit provider (e.g. Amex, a big 4 bank or another). And it happens all the time. With a quick enough turnaround, the credit provider can just not pay the merchant (e.g. Prezzee), which is allowed because in the chargeback the customer is stating the goods were not provided.
However if the credit provider has already paid the money to the merchant, the credit provider will probably only receive a very low cents-in-the-dollar amount back.
So credit providers understandably may chose not to cover as these chargebacks come out of the merchant fees we all pay when we make credit transactions. But sometimes credit providers will take the hit. Here's a specific article on the matter which absolutely recommends you file a chargeback in case of "Gift Cards and Insolvency".
