  • Good timing. Got my ATO statement for the quarter last week.

      • +3

I purchased a Vanilla Visa gift card from Woolworths on Fri 21 Jun and used it to pay the ATO that same day.

        • +1

Why you do that no points no discount

          • +27

@Poor Ass: Sometimes I buy gift cards before a promotion begins to test what works so that I can better answer the questions that people will inevitably ask me.

          • @Poor Ass: These does work for ATO. The only limitation is you can only use 5 cards per day.

            • @rzy6cn: Its 10 per day for each ATO account. Unless they dropped it to 5 recently?

              • @Slippery Otter: I used multiple vanilla card and coles gift card from 2022. I believe in 2022 the limit was 5 per day. But I don't know what time do ATO refresh the quota daily. So I just pay 5 cards per day when they accept the card.

    • +2

Less card fee on a MasterCard.

  • Anyone know if this will work at Vicroads (Online/in-person) to pay renewal?

    • +3

Vanilla Mastercard Gift Card worked, I just paid 6 months of rego (Vic) last week. This should work too.

      • Best way to use exact remaining balance?

        • +1

Split payments at Coles/Woolies for your grocery shop. You can key in the exact card amount at the self serve checkouts.

        • Also can use the remaining amount on bills like power, council rates, etc.

        • +1

Buy an Amazon Gift card with the exact balance value

      • Online or in person?

      • Can u please elaborate…I have 876 worth of rego to pay in ViC. So I buy 2x 500 gift cards and use that to pay rego. Can I do it using 2 cards online or I have to call them. They have card processing fee as well I assume. For remaining pay at self service checkout at Coles/Woolies?

        • I also want to use these gift cards to pay my rego, but it doesn't look like you can do it online.

I'm looking at the form now and can't see any way to split payment, or enter an amount to charge to the card:

          https://memes.thesizzle.com.au/dump/vicroads.png

I assume this form will attempt to bill the entire amount to the card and because it's more than $500 (the max you can load onto the pre-paid Visa) the billing attempt will fail.

I tried via Sniip and get a "no partial payments" message, so yeah, Vicroads 12 month rego at least you can't use this card promo for it seems :(

        • you can pay the rego by quarterly.

          • +1

@nowich: Through VicRoads you can change to quarterly or half yearly, but the total for the year is higher than the normal yearly option. Still this one way to use the cards to pay it.

Otherwise you can call them by phone and request to make split payment. There is a surcharge for card payments but when I did it they calculated to make the transaction amount the correct amount to fully use the first card.

        • Can be done only in person at a VicRoads office.

      • is it possible to pay in two payments if it is more than $500?

    • I've tried renew NSW rego and pay CTP. They works. But it will be hard to split bill so they are only good for 6 month renewal.

  • Great

Are there any other flavours? I prefer chocolate.

      JV? Is that you?

  • silly question, could we use these cards to get other gc at Coles?

    • I am keen to know this too

    • I used these to buy some Ultimate gift cards last year at Coles.

    • I used the Vanilla Mastercards from last week to buy the fee free EFTPOS cards at Coles this week.

      • It would be funny if you then can buy Coles MC with that Etfpos card.

  • +11

but they do still seem to work for ATO payments.

I use itunes gift card to pay my tax debt.

They call me every year and threaten jail time

    • +1

They want google play cards , Kitboga - “I will redeem it!!!!”

    • +1

They call me too. I tell them I need to visit the bathroom first and then go retrieve my credit card. Both tasks take quite a long time and involve sound effects.

  • Pity it is a limit of 2 variable cards per member per day. My local woolies will have the stock at the start of Wednesday but by say 9am will be all out of stock and they won't restock for a while.

  • Do these Vanilla Visa Gift Cards have an expiry date?

    • Yes it does. Should be 2028 or 2029 rn.

    • By law purchased gift cards in Australia need to be valid for a min of 3 years.

    • +2

Yes but a lot of these cards are notorious for getting hacked.

      • This story on a Current Affair.

        • +2

Yes, because the card numbers are recycled, and it's easy for hackers to use brute force.

So if you buy them, don't sit on them, use them asap! If you don't need to spend them rn, don't have FOMO. There would be plenty more opportunities.

  • So we can buy each max x2 variable cards per account everyday?

  • Can we use these at the post office to pay bills?

    • I have been to 2 different aus post and got turned away for trying to pay with these cards. I was told they no longer accept prepaid cards/gift cards payments.

      • Yeah I couldn't use these to pay my car's rego (WA).

The lady at AusPost actually tried twice, and both times, it was rejected by the machine.

        • Same, it doesn't work to pay driver license in WA.
Used it to pay insurance at RAC

    • I tried to use the Vanilla Mastercards to pay a QLD rego at AusPost last week and they didn't work. Ending up converting the cards into prepaid EFTPOS cards at Coles and those worked at AusPost.

  • can I buy 5x$100 and 2x$500 and still get bonus points for both?

    • +3

Why would you do that? Each $100 will cost $5.95 to activate.

      • yeah just saw the summary. silly me ! stick to $500 inly

  • +1

Anyone know if these work with Zippay?

    • non of the prepaid gcs cards do

      • Zip used to accept prepaid cards for a long time.

and an extra + for free :-)

    • Not anymore.

  • Hi OBers. FWIW, I just used one of these (purchased at Woolies a week or two ago) via PayPal.

    • yep and now that have stopped working

      • +1

Is this based on an experience or just opinion ?

        • I tried an hour ago. Doesn’t work, card declined via paypal

        • Experience

      • Happy to post the card details here (now with a balance of $0) for anyone to confirm. Just say the word…

        • I support you Howie. That was my experience. My request of @Poor Ass was for as much certainty on the issue before a large outlay was made on Wednesday.

          • @Lynx33: Thanks @Lynx33. However, I owe @Poor Ass an apology. I used a Vanilla MasterCard (not a Visa, as clearly mentioned in the original post).

            I'm very sorry @Poor Ass.

            • @howie: lol is ok I wasn't talking out of my ass

              Yep vanilla master still works

      • I think it’s a bit of hit and miss with these cards and PayPal, same with Shopback. I had several rejected, but then some others worked. This is with the Vanilla Visa recently, I still had some from before.

    • so I can add these cards to my PayPal and then use PayPal to pay my bills?

    • +4

      Those were Vanilla prepaid Mastercard.

It seems the issue is specifically to do with Visa.

    • I also used to pay for Coles via PayPal 2 days ago, and also payed AGL via PayPal. Not sure why OP said otherwise.

      • Vanilla Mastercard or Vanilla Visa? This issue only concerns the latter.

        • +1

Visa, I bought it 2 weeks ago with the same deal as this one.

Oops, my mistake. I checked PayPal account, it was MasterCard. I don't have any Vanilla Visa to test.

    • I bought one directly with a Vanilla Mastercard 2 weeks ago.

    • +3

On Friday night, I tried to link two different Vanilla Visa gift cards to my PayPal account (which had never been linked to my PayPal account before) and both were declined. The error message I got each time from PayPal said that the card issuer declined the link request.

I then tried to link a Coles Mastercard gift card and an Activ Visa gift card a few seconds later and had no issues. Both the Activ Visa and Coles Mastercard had never been linked to my PayPal account before.

  • So what can you actually use these for? Is there a way to pay ATO with these?

    • Not ATO according to the comment above, but OP says it works…

      I'll hold off until confirmed

      • -1

You can be the chosen one to try

  • You use to be able to use these with PayPal!? Damn I missed the boat

Do any others do PayPal! ?

    • Yes, can still use Coles Prepaid Mastercard and Vanilla Prepaid Mastercard with PayPal.

But I'm not sure if the exclusion discussed in this thread applies to the Vanilla Visa sold at Coles as it seems I was still able to use my $250 cards earlier this month for PayPal transactions.

Edit: Just purchased a 5% off WISH gift card with PayPal to use up a small balance Vanilla Visa $250 card bought at Coles and can confirm still works.

      • Wait how were you able to add the Vanilla Visa $250 to Paypal? As others have reported, it's no longer possible…
Or did you add the Vanilla Visa $250 to Paypal before the exclusion happened and therefore was still able to pay with the Vanilla Visa in Paypal?

        • Or did you add the Vanilla Visa $250 to Paypal before the exclusion happened and therefore was still able to pay with the Vanilla Visa in Paypal?

Yeah this is probably why, I added them a while back. Don't have any more $250 cards to add so I could test. @WookieMonster Would this be right? That I'm still able to use because I already had them added to my PayPal wallet.

          • @MiscOzB: I am not actually sure how far InComm has gone to block PayPal. I have no Vanilla Visa gift cards currently linked to my PayPal, so I cannot test it myself either.

I am not sure whether only the action of linking has been blocked, or both linking and charging transactions from PayPal have been blocked.

            • +1

@WookieMonster: I meant to test if I could add/link any more of them, but I guess the answer would be no as you've found yourself. But as I confirmed above I can still pay with linked Vanilla Visa gift cards that were already in my PayPal wallet.

            • +2

@WookieMonster: Thanks both for the reply.
In any case, linking new Vanilla Visa cards to Paypal is no longer doable and so that's one less way to use the Vanilla Visa cards (and a major way at that!)
Even if you can use the cards if you added them to Paypal before the exclusion applied, those cards will run out eventually.

No Paypal means no WISH gift card, no Bupa health insurance, no lots of things :(

              • @natlif: Yeah it's a shame, hopefully we get another 10% off the Coles Prepaid Mastercards soon, seems like a long time now since we had one (either online or in store).

    • What do you use paypal for? ebay?
recently more and more merchants remove paypal as their payment method.

  • Never bought these before, so can you use these any any places Visa is accepted? Online? Store?

    • +7

The Vanilla Visa gift card balance check website says:

Use your Vanilla Visa Gift Card worldwide, anywhere Visa cards are accepted.

However, this is a big fat lie.

Vanilla Visa gift cards are only accepted at merchants (online, in-person and over the phone) that:

      • Choose to accept prepaid Visa gift cards as a payment method, and

      • Do not require a PIN to verify a purchase (only applicable for in-person / card-present transactions), and

      • Accept magstripe (i.e. swipe-only) payments from Visa cards (only applicable for in-person / card-present transactions), and

      • Are not classified as a merchant conducting "cash-equivalent" transactions, and

      • Are not classified as an automated fuel dispenser (i.e. the pay-at-the-pump machines you see at unattended service stations, including Costco, Ampol and United).

These caveats (particularly the first three) are important, because:

      • Any merchants that mandate a Visa card to support 3-D Secure when you attempt a payment online will reject Vanilla Visa gift cards, as they are unable to support 3-D Secure. (If you are unsure of what 3-D Secure refers to, think of the occasions where you have attempted to make a purchase online, but the merchant asks you to verify the purchase with your bank via a one-time password sent to your card's linked email address or phone number. Not all online merchants mandate support for 3-D Secure.) This is the reason that (for example) DEFT stopped accepting Vanilla Visa gift cards as a payment method earlier this month.

      • A merchant may choose to reject a Vanilla Visa gift card if you try to use one as a payment method, and there really is not much you can do about it. For example, both Coles and Woolworths have set up their checkouts to automatically block you from using Vanilla Visa gift cards to purchase some gift cards sold in their stores (e.g. Vanilla Visa gift cards, Coles Mastercard gift cards, Vanilla Mastercard gift cards). I suspect BIG W has done the same thing if you try to use one to purchase Activ Visa gift cards in their stores.

      • Any merchants that mandate a PIN be provided when using a Vanilla Visa gift card in-person will be unable to accept this gift card, as Vanilla Visa gift cards only support signature verification for in-person purchases. That means if you swipe the card on the EFTPOS terminal and are asked for a PIN, you will need to press Enter / OK / the green button on the EFTPOS terminal to try and trigger the signature verification process. However, a merchant may choose to not allow signature verification at all (e.g. ALDI) or may be unfamiliar with the signature verification process and refuse to process payment.

      • Any merchants that do not accept swipe-only payments from Visa cards will be unable to accept these gift cards in-person. For example, a number of the parking meters near work stopped accepting swipe-only payment cards earlier this year, which means I need to either tap a card, or insert a card with a chip. Additionally, if you go to a merchant and all they have is a Square reader that does not accept swipe payments, you are out of luck. (I have noticed a few small businesses and market stallholders use these lately.)

To add even more confusion on top, there appears to be an issue where InComm is unable (or unwilling) to allow you to link a Vanilla Visa gift card at some payment services (e.g. PayPal, Sniip). This issue only cropped up around 1-2 weeks ago, and I am not sure whether this is a temporary issue or something else…

      • If I only intend to use this Vanilla Visa card to buy groceries at Coles/WW over, say, a couple of weeks, will it be worth the trouble (and the risk of the card numbers being hacked)?

It's essentially kinda like a 3.4% discount (if we treat reward points like cash). I'd buy only a single, $500 card.

        • +1

Hmm it depends on whether you think the hassle is worth a 3.4% discount.

It will be easier to use a Vanilla Visa gift card at Woolworths, because when you go through the signature verification process there, you do not need a staff member to get your signature, review it and then approve or decline. However, at Coles, if you are above the threshold for PIN verification (which should be around $35), you will need to go through the full process of having the staff member get your signature, etc etc etc.

I do not hold onto Vanilla Visa gift cards for more than a few days, but if you are going to hold onto them for about a couple of weeks at most, I think you could get away with it. Again, it all depends on your risk appetite!

I think it would be worth purchasing a Vanilla Visa gift card if you were going to use it purchase a discounted Woolworths or Coles gift card somewhere (or a ShopBack Supermarket Visa gift card, assuming using a Vanilla Visa gift card on ShopBack is still possible). The only issue is that very few discounted gift card portals will directly accept Vanilla Visa gift cards as a payment method (especially since PayPal is currently not an option).

  • -8

This deal is no good. Previous Coles Mastercard deals were 10% discount less card fees.

This deal is for 10 x Everyday Points less card fees. These points are only worth 5% and then it’s less the card fees. And 5% Woolworths money is worth less than 5% discount.

    It’s just not worth it.

    • +1

I didn't neg you…. but they can be worth it I think.

Notwithstanding the hacking risk if you hold onto them for too long, they are a pretty easy way to earn some Qantas points, e.g. $7.95 = 2500 Qantas points.

If you were to buy 2x $500 per day across 7 days (15 total), that's $111 for 35k Qantas points, which is a solid amount of points for business class seats!

If you were going to spend that money anyway (e.g. ATO bill), I'd take the points.

  • Can these cards be used for strata and membership fees?

    • not this specific type of card, but i found out that DEFT seems to have stopped taking the coles vanilla visa cards, just in the past few weeks or so. some strata firms use DEFT.

      • +1

The reason is due to DEFT apparently recently requiring all Visa cards being used on their platform to support 3-D Secure. All prepaid Visa gift cards do not support 3-D Secure and should therefore be rejected by DEFT.
