The reason is due to DEFT apparently recently requiring all Visa cards being used on their platform to support 3-D Secure. All prepaid Visa gift cards do not support 3-D Secure and should therefore be rejected by DEFT.

        • I think Activ and Coles Mastercard will both always pass 3DS challenge. If it doesn't work it is probably to due some additional risk control measures.
Vanilla Visa on the other hand has always been a PITA though :)

          • @truetypezk: I have noticed Activ Visa gift cards somehow bypass some 3-D Secure challenges (but not all) when you enter the card details directly into the online checkout, whereas Vanilla Visa gift cards almost always fail them.

Coles Mastercard gift cards are different, because those operate on the Mastercard network. From experience, I find that a prepaid Mastercard gift card is more likely to bypass a 3-D Secure challenge than Activ Visa gift cards (let alone Vanilla Visa gift cards).

      • Activ still works and Coles MasterCard works as well.

        • Just to confirm - Activ as in Activ Visa?

      • Thanks for sharing!

  • Are people able to use Vanilla Visa to buy TCN cards, which are much more sophisticated and user friendly?

    • Want to know as well

  • +1

Can these b used for land tax in vic?

    • can confirm it works. Declined when I tried straight after buying (stated insufficient funds), but worked now. I used $497.75 (0.45% transaction fee) for a $500 land tax. You can try $497.76

      • Still giving me withdrawl limit reached, I assume I have to wait.

        • probably, I waited 2 hrs. before retrying.

          • @donb: Sweet made payment just now, now to buy some more.

  • Time to pay off my remaining HECS balance after EOFY!

Managed to pay most of it off in the last Coles Mastercard deal and was waiting for another prepaid VISA/Mastercard deal!

    • +1

Indexation is applied to HELP debts on 1 June each year. So there's no rush to pay it off by EOFY now.

  • can you use this to buy insurance policy online and NSW Rego renewal ?

is it only to be used in store or it works online as well? looks like many comment above it is no longer useful for online payment.is that correct?

I have roughly 3,000 worth car rego, insurances renewal and service cost so this comes handy if only i can pay using online and instore otherwise i end-up collecting $3000 worth card and of no use is not desirable.

  • Can I use Coles Master Gift Card to pay this one?
    That is MasterCard Prepaid.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Really liked the clear and concise profit/loss table in the post.
Helps ppl not get sucked in by tricky promotion.

  • -2

who is that silly to buy those, not worth it.

    • For people with BPay transactions it was worth it to pay through Sniip etc., especially those accumulating for Qantas Points Club. Now extremely dubious value without easy online redemption.

  • Can this be used to pay council rates through BPOINT?

    Has anyone tried recently?

  • Hmmm. Do I apply for a new credit card with those spend $3-4k in 90 day deals and then get lots of these $500 viariable isa cards and pay my taxes straight away…..might be worthwhile. I have not applied for a new CC in many many years.

  • Will I get bonus points if I pick up a temporary card at Woolies and register it afterwards?

  • Does anyone know how long until the everyday points get credited? Wonder if it’s as speedy as flybuys next 24hrs?

    • +1

Everyday Rewards is usually instant. Even if the checkout is having internet issues, it has never been more than about an hour for me.

    • Purchased this morning, points were instant.

  • Please be aware that the Vanilla Visa gift cards from the Coles deal a few months ago do not currently work with merchants that use $0 transactions to validate the card - including Paypal, Sniip, and Amazon.

I'd love to hear if these Vanilla Visa cards from Woolworths end up working with any of those merchants.

    • +2

Just on this - the cards are sold as working everywhere where Visa is accepted, so what we've bought does not function as advertised. If others want to voice their concerns, I recommend putting in a complaint to Heritage Bank. They can connect the complaint through to Incomm Payments, who are responsible for this.

I just try to add Vanilla Visa to paypal and it doesn't work. It says it is declined by issuer. So annoying. I will skip this one I guess.

  • Is anyone having trouble using these for ATO? Coming up as "transaction declined" for me :(

    • +1

Just paid 2*$500 off tax bill.

      • +1

It also worked for me. 2 x $500 payments in the ATO site.

      • Thanks, I just tried again and it worked. Must've needed some time to activate properly even though the online balance said $500

        • How long did you have to wait? Seems like I ran into the same thing.

          • @truetypezk: A bit over 1.5 hours after purchasing

          • +4

@truetypezk: My cards all became useable exactly 30 minutes after purchasing.

            • +1

@VantageXL: Feels right. Mine were declined @ 20 mins and then worked somewhere less than an hour. Probably 30 mins like you have suggested. Cheers.

      • Are you using Government EasyPay service when making the payment and paying $2 card payment fee? or is this an alternative way to make payment with the gift cards to avoid any fees to the ATO?

  • A friend just bought 2x $500. Hasn’t been able to pay ATO yet…will try again later. Balance states $500 on each….

Found this morning that I wasn't able to purchase using the Shopback Supermarket card, received Item Not Allowed message. Seems this option to stack discounts is no longer available. Didn't have any of the HCF Category Choice Grocery cards to test but guessing it would be the same.

    • That would be my guess too, because ShopBack Supermarket Visa gift cards and Category Choice Groceries gift cards (and most Activ Visa gift cards) use the same BIN when added to a mobile wallet.

    • Anyone tried coles prepaid MasterCard gift card??? Westfield card?

      • +1

should be same result "Item Not Allowed" as I tried on TCN eftpos last time.

I think vanilla is same supplier of coles MC, when checking balance of vanilla MC, it's showing as "coles MC"

  • Added card to PayPal and Shopback without issue, haven't used though.

    • same

    • I added it but wasn't able to use it for Netflix. Maybe it doesn't support subscriptions?

  • Was looking to pay rego with 2x$500 cards. Any way to do this online or will i need to go into VicRoads/AusPost?

    • Can't do online last time I checked but can do over the phone.

      • how can you do over the phone with 2x500 cards?

        • Ring them and request to make a split payment.

          • @tbone74: thanks. is there a surcharge if I may ask pls to pay it this way?

    • please keep us posted. I need to also pay but can't figure out how to do split. thanks!

  • Look like it can be added to paypal now

    • Have you tried purchasing something via the PayPal after it was added and did it work?

      • I paid agl bill via PayPal with the Vanilla cards. Working.

      • Can confirm it works, I just made a purchase at Giftz with the Vanilla Visa via Paypal

    • fantastic!
unfortunately no such revival for DEFT with vanilla visa….

  • Potentially related since it is the same card issuer, but Activ Prepaid Visas no longer work on Sniip too (still work on PayPal)

  • +1

Added 2 cards to paypal, split payment ($500 + $1xx) to Service NSW successfully.

  • -1

Bought 3 cards, 2 went through and got the points… But third one didn't get the points… What should I do now? The staff said they don't know.

Edit just found out 2x500 variable cards per day

    • -1

I got similar issue last time, then contacted Everyday rewards live chat
and was able to get the missing points of those extra cards
      worth trying

  • Hey folks
    First time buying this.
May I know what this card looks like?
And If I want to use it to ATO, for example for $500, how much should I specify on the payment since there will be fee on it right?
    Thanks

  • -1

Just realise it’s only 3.4 percentage saving after.

    • +1

      3.4% > 0%.

That is ignoring any other costs involved in getting the cards, financing, etc. I can't say who is right or wrong, as it is all relative.

    • Think of it as $34+/transaction. You can probably do 2-3 trans in the same store with their arbitrary 5~10 cards/person limit. $100+/visit is actually pretty decent.

      • You can probably do 2-3 trans in the same store with their arbitrary 5~10 cards/person limit.

Have you done this? There is a 2 card limit for the variable card.

        • I did 6 cards yesterday but woolies was like 2min walk from my work, so just did 3 walks lol

        • With 3 edr accounts of course.
The official gift card purchase limit at Woolies has always been 10/person but I find it hard to convince them to sell you 10x500. I am usually more than happy with 5 or 6.

    • Find me a cheaper way to pay a tax bill or council rates.

These are good where you would have zero chance of getting other discounts.

    • +1

not even 3.4 considering you can get woolies gc for 5% off. More close to 3.1%

  • +1

I’m wondering if anyone has tried to use these cards to purchase restaurants choice cards from coles this week?

    • +1

      Yes its work

  • Does anyone know if you can buy these at Woolies with the Special Gift Card?
    Like these ones https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/851990

    • +1

Yes, got it for $500 balance using special gift card (Woollies one) which I stocked using different credit card offers.
Split payment at check out and paid using my 5x special woolies gift card

Why does Vanilla want to maintain 2 type Mastercard and Visa card at the same time? It will cause confusion for ppl who wants to buy these promotion beside the Visa card can't use with PIN and with higher fee on ATO payment, why don't they just go with the Mastercard option and just get rid of this Visa one?

    • The Vanilla brand is owned by Incomm Payments, Visa or Master is just more channels for them to sell their products.

  • -1

This deal does not seem to be applicable in Melbourne at the moment? Is this another NSW only offer?

    • Why do you think that? Worked for me yesterday in Melbourne.

  • Does it work at Costco for shopping?

    • -1

costco does not allow prepaid credit cards that do not have a pin.

Buy shopback supermarket gift cards with it and it will work.

      • Interesting…. I could've sworn I've used such cards in the past at Costco.

        • I used 2 prepaid credit cards split payment a week ago.

          • @LRS: Used successfully last night at Costco.

      • I used these last night at Costco.

And if I recall correctly Costco isn't classified as a supermarket but as a warehouse or something like that, which would mean Shopback Supermarket cards won't work there. They didn't work when I've tried in the past but haven't tried again recently.

  • for about 3% discount, if it weren't for my tax bill I wouldn't be bothered, surprised it was sold out this morning.

  • +1

I'm finding these cards to be of limited value.
I have tried and failed to:
    * pay a one-off payment on my health insurance. processor declined
    * tried paying netflix, declined
    * can't add to google wallet
    * was able to add to paypal but haven't been able to make a successful purchase this way yet

I'll have to carry the physical card with me to Woolies I guess…

    • How long did you wait before using the card after you bought it?

      • I bought yesterday morning.

I think I've successfully spent them now, though. Still pending, but AGL Electricity accepted the payment

    • I had no issues yesterday with one-off payment to Medibank

    • Same Bupa declined

      • I paid Bupa via Paypal this morning and had no issues

    • I used to pay my daughter’s school fee, not anymore. Wortst thing is card wont get declined nor approved, penndin transactions for 1 week.

  • Do these ones have a pin?
