      How about iphones

    • +3

Is that the reason why ppl are not buying tesla?

      • -3

You can think what you want, it just stands that BYD was a copycat of BMW. Many Chinese EV or self driving cars are not reliable. An example would be the Xiaomi Car which just recently crashed in China and the mass refund attempt price drops. If you think these copy manufacturers are worth it over your safety and that of others, it's just not right. Hope your info doesnt drive its way to China too.

They are able to mass produce these and pull out these stats because of their direct connections to the Chinese government many of these cars sit in massive car graveyards in China. Not going to argue that Tesla gets money from them too, but theres a slight difference in quality where a company makes a copy of a product.

    • +21

I'd rather buy a Chinese car than an American or Euro…

        • +12

Ethnically, yes. What's that got to do with it?

Historically, the west has been quite dismissive of Asian manufacturing. It used to the Japanese, then Korean, and now Chinese cars are in the firing line. Fact of the matter is that Chinese EV manufacturing is better value and quality than the majority of the world.

          • +3

@Caped Baldy: My worst cars were luxury Euro cars so I agree - I avoid Euro cars like the plague.

            • -2

@dangerdanger: My worst car was Japanese. As in the one I liked the least. Most boring, worst to drive. Wasn’t even that reliable. What’s the point?

          • -5

@Caped Baldy: China manufacturing is different than China design … Although they are starting to catch up… They are still unproven … But EVs are a different game.

They conned the global automakers to open up shop in China and stole all the manufacturing secrets. The automakers sold out their secrets for some quick profit and now they will pay for it.

            • +2

              @hippyhippy:

Lol. That's not remotely true. It was 100% capitalism coming in for the cheap labour.

China realised in the early 2000s, they couldn't match traditional auto manufacturing so they invested heavily and subsidised EV tech and they also had terrible pollution to deal with.

              • -6

@Caped Baldy: They invested so much that they are the highest ev producers and a majority of their cars sit in graveyards. Take a look at the eBike industry there too. They are exactly the same.
Theres a difference between investing and polluting. At this point they are polluting. They pay out companies to make these products and they just dump them cause they made a profit.

            • @hippyhippy: No con, the manufacturers knew this would happen. Trademarks and patents are national. Companies like VW sold decades of their r&d simply to make money for a short period of time by selling cars in China.

It's corporate colonialism, just like colonialism of old, the wealthy move into foreign nations with the hope of establishing monopolies.

          • +10

@Caped Baldy: Yep, the same people that said "jap crap" are now the avid Toyota fan boys (who's car is probably made in Thailand anyway); the same thing will happen with Chinese cars.

          • @Caped Baldy: I guess it depends on whether you are comfortable with giving money directly to a regime actively engaging in human rights violations.

But hey - no matter. The cars are cheap.

    • +2

Unlike their European counterparts that never have any issues at all.🤣🤣

  • +15

Poor choice to issue HN gift card, that's a negative incentive

    • Maybe Gerry has a hand or face in EV Direct's pie?

      • Gerry = Big Yobbo D*ckhead :D

    • +1

      Disincentive?

  • We'll definitely see EV goes below 30k in 2025.

    • +1

      Maybe $25k in 2026

      • maybe $20k in 2027

        • +2

          Free in 2031

    • I wish! That would be great for people picking up EVs. I think it's completely unrealistic but would definitely incentivise many to pick one up.

      • +1

I'm pretty sure in China they have $10k EVs everywhere, we're getting ripped off in Australia.

        • You can buy popular Toyota models there for just over half the price we pay, you also get it the same week, none of this waiting for 2 years crap.

    • BYD still make a decent profit in Europe even after the tariffs …. They can go much lower. Compare what they sell a car in China for compared to here. There would be at least 40% mark up or somewhere in that order

    • +1

Not likely, only way to achieve that would be sub 50kwhr battery's but Aussies who never go more then 10km from home all think they need a 1,000km of range - Before ya start I know you're different and need to go further but stats are the stats and the majority of Aussies don't travel more then 50km a day, which is probably how 10+ year old leafs with 70km of real world range still manage to sell for 10k+

  • +1

How much is the HN gift card?

    • If they dont mention it, it will be $20

    • Also wanting to know

    • +3

$50 at the dealership near me

  • Why not just give $1698 off the price instead?

    • +1

Because they have cracked the code on how to lure innocent buyers with free items instead.

    • +2

Because this is RRP not what it cost the company to provide these items. The actual cost to the company maybe just $400.

    • Charger RRP is $999 in reality it's lucky to be $200 build cost so it's a lot cheaper to give away something with an inflated price.

Much like all the builders with "50k of inclusive upgrades!" Yeah you give me a $60 tap that you would've charged me $600 for 'free' don't mean I'm saving $600

  • +1

So I guess this post is gonna get over 200 comments…

      Here is another :)

Are they going to open up recycling depots just for the soon to be piling up worthless electric cars that cost more to replace the battery than buy a new one ?

      • +2

It's quite obvious that EVs have a more favourable impact on the environment than the ICE vehicles they replace, so the very premise of this argument is flawed.

Nobody cares if EVs have a negative impact on the environment. The alternative is driving an ICE vehicle which produces toxic exhaust for every year of its life (unless you run LPG, but Australia has always preferred to gift its LPG away for next to nothing and import oil instead)

    • +1

      Mostly from the anti-EV brigade.

  • +16

Hur dur I read on news.com.au that EV's are bad, china is bad, and no one is buying them.

Now it's said we can save half the comments.

    • -6

Eh? You dont see all these massive $5,000 - $25,000 price drop deals on ICE cars and Hybrid cars. Only EV's…..

      • +19

It's the first time I've ever seen new technology get cheaper and I find it scary and confusing.

        • -5

Exactly. In 15 years, all EV's will be in a scrap yard. While i laugh at them in my 20 year old ICE car.

          • +12

@Wizard: Who even needs a car, a horse lives for years and runs on nothing but hay and carrots.

            • +5

@Charleston: A horse hasn't ever blown up in a firey explosion unlike those dangerous engine and electric vehicles.

          • +4

@Wizard: What are you some kind of cartoon villain.

          • +4

@Wizard: Are you really going to drive to a scrap yard and laugh at the scrapped EVs? Strikes me as a bit odd

        • +2

          This is the pure gold.

      • +2

The original mass produced car, the Ford Model T had massive price cuts over it's lifetime as production scaled up and got more efficient.

      • +1

Ahh yeah you do, did you not see Jeep Grand Cherekee drop $28,000 a couple of months ago

    • +1

Save the world, buy a Kia Picanto

  • How much is the HN gift card value??

    • +1

$50, but they didn't give it to me even though I had a test drive confirmed because they over allocated their test drive slots. Pretty shit. This is at the Indooroopilly experience centre.

  • This just unlocked a memory for me: Daewoo chucking in a free microwave when you bought one of their cars

  • -1

Better off getting a hybrid, most state are pushing road user charge per KM - hybrid will be better option as you are not limited by charging station, Road user charge will be coming to all states because currently for example QLD doesn't have RUC, people will drive in VIC with QLD plates to avoid it

  • +3

The Dolphin isn't actually a bad car, just needs to be cheaper. I think the critical mass adoption of these small BEVs is about $30k. $40k for the small SUVs and $50k for the med SUVs.

    • +1

Yes, was hoping able to get a Dolphin Premium for closer to $40K driveaway :(

  • -1

They need to get them down sub 30k

  • Has anyone actually got this? How did they confirm you'll get the headphones/ gift card? Says given at pick up.

    • Gift card after giving my license info

Headphones on arrival with car with next shipment in up to a few months

      • How much gift card did you get?

        • $50 to Harvey Norman.

  • +2

Was going to get this one, but decided on the Suzuki Hybrid swift instead. For under $30K its way better

    • Have you compared that with MG3 Hybrid?

      • Once the MG3 hybrid's battery goes flat. It drives like a slug.

        • Most hybrids are like this now. I drive a lot of hire cars and they are not as much fun any more. Hybrids are sucking the life out of traditional cars.

          • @choofa: It's a serious issue with the MG3. Lots of reviews I've watched are mentioning it.

            • +1

@Wizard: It’s maybe not such a serious issue with most hybrids but their performance is getting worse.
All these stats are for fully charged batteries with multiple motors, which is good for start stop driving. But if you get out of the boring cycle and want to have a bit of fun those electric motors run out of power quickly and you are left with an underpowered slug in most hybrids these days.

They are building motors with amazing efficiency and torque at a certain range and gearing it for that in general driving but none of that works off the beaten track on a nice windy road with no kids in the back.

              Hybrids are just not fun

Yet this is where EVs are actually really good. 100% power and low weight. There is a reason why Tesla got where it has

              • +1

@choofa: Most people who buy Suzuki Swift and MG3 are mainly for urban run around, not really bringing them out to windy road for fun.

                • +2

@edfoo: Yeah for sure, but the same applies to many higher priced hybrids. Toyotas, Hyundais and the like. Boring motors and CVTs. Just really soulless things that are bringing a horrible end to petrol cars. Yet people are paying $60k for these things

                  • @choofa: Main reason more people are buying hybrids now is better fuel economy compared to ICEs, not because of better performance or fun to drive.

                    • @edfoo: Yeah I know. That is my point, they are boring to drive because of this

                  • +1

@choofa: Toyota hybrids aren't at all like a normal CVT. They use planetary gearsets, which are nothing like normal CVTs and don't have their drawbacks, imo they're pretty genius when used in conjunction with electric motors for regen braking. I hate normal CVTs so was surprised when I found this out. Maybe you mean they don't have the fun or sensation of changing gears.

                    • @Techie4066: No they just suck when you want a fun car to drive on twisty windy roads. The underpowered petrol motor no longer has the power from the awesome electric motors and the car is horribly sluggish and slow

              • @choofa: All the hyper cars are going hybrid fyi.

                • @Wizard: Well those things will suck when the batteries run low too

    • The only problem I have with hybrids is the weak motors. Sure they are quick away from the traffic lights but when you find a nice bit of road and you want to push it the electric motor is good for 5 seconds and then all you get is a lot of noise from a horribly underpowered engine and a terrible transmission designed only to make fuel economy figures look good.

You chose a good cheap option though. I’d be disappointed in some of these $50-70k Toyota hybrids that aren’t worth the price tag.

    • Only has a 2kw battery in it…. tad bit bigger than my ebike

    • Better price but that’s about where it ends.

  • -1

No alias when they got your lisence details now

  • If I wanted some Sonos Ace Headphones i wouldn't pay $38k for them. That's not a bargain.

    • But you also get a Dolphin Dynamic free with that $38K Sonos Ace headphones :p
