  • How's the battery life on this?
Tossing up between this or a Elitebook 7840u.

    • different use cases, this has bad battery life but better performance

    • +1

      Depends how lucky you are.

Several reports of dud batteries in the last deal with battery life ranging from 10 minutes to 2 hours.

      • Maxing out at 2hrs and they call this a laptop?

        • +7

Its a H CPU buy a U if you want battery life.

          • +1

@dyziplen: Ryzen HS clocks up some good mileage on battery.

            Just poor optimisation.

Well, worth being measured in minutes. Might as well don't bother as a laptop.

            • @Chinese: Second this. Ryzen if you value battery life.

              • +2

@buffalo bill: Not just better battery life.

Much lower heat dissipation too, so a cooler and quieter laptop (some laptops can get very hot to touch and the fan can get very noisy because it has to spin faster).

                • @BooYa: Benchmarks quote well and can sustain load if needed. Much better chipset.

Feels like Intel has been asleep for too long.

      • But, in the end decent service (despite my initial disappointment), and a note to call service before returning for battery issues in case battery saver is enabled somehow in BIOS (from what I gathered when discussing my already sent return, while repurchasing).

Replacing batteries will be an issue though I agree. I can let others know how my new unit's battery is on Monday.

        • +1

Who are you getting service from?

Intel sold the NUC mini-PC range to Asus, and the NUC laptops are in something of a black hole compared to Asus' own laptops.

    • +2

you might as well wait for the new Soc/Snapdragon X ones.

  • Just checking this doesn't have a touch screen?

    • No touch

      • +11

        thats what she said

    • Either touch or 4k for me

  • Does it come with power adapter?

  • It doesn't come with any memory or storage?

    • Correct

    • See previous deal for eBay links to 41aud sticks of 16gb 5600 compatible ddr5 (4800 only here)

Going rate for 2tb SSD is 140 to 180

  • +16

Just be aware this is Barebone Chassis Requires: RAM, SSD, Windows.

  • Sooo tempted. I have 1gbps internet speeds on my MacBook so I use GeForce now but I’m considering using this just to play squad, just unsure how it will perform when plugged into a 4k monitor.

    • +1

I'm tempted as well. Notebookcheck.net has a benchmark chart that puts it around a 2070, and a guy on Reddit says it'll run squad on Epic settings with FSR off at 60+fps. So not a bad chip at all, but I've never owned an Arc and wonder if there are any quirks I'd need to be aware of.

      • 60fps that’s damn goood. I’m torn between this or the Lenovo legion go deal. But I’m thinking this is better performance and more practical. The only downside is this isn’t powered by usb c and also I’ve heard from the previous deal someone said it’s very loud.

        • -3

This is using A730M……so if you don’t play game, that’s Ok.

          • @PeppaCat: The only game I would play is squad at low setting. I think this would be a perfect backup pc.

            • +1

              @Bonesaw321: Its amazing for me
Descenders at ultra 100fps full hd
Great at subnautica high in full hd

        • So even though it has Thunderbolt4 you can't charge this via that port?

        • so many problems with the Lenovos I wouldn't buy one

  • I’m thinking to just buy it and decide later if I want to keep it without opening you can return it for free with eBay plus. You have up to 30 days returns with this.

    • That's correct. You have to be an eBay plus member I believe.

Comments about battery life in the previous post was the only thing that stopped me picking one up.

  • Hope they match the price on their webstore.

    • Doubt it - the eBay discount is either partially or fully funded by eBay.

  • Can you put 96gb ram on it? Although it said max 64gb

    • sure

      • That will be awesome if it works

    • DDR5 so on yes. Probably even higher than that

    • Even when spec sheets give a 'maximum supported' figure, that doesn't necessarily mean a higher amount won't work, it just means that's the tested spec.

      • that is NOT always the case
they MAY put a proprietary lock on the mobo to force people to buy a more expensive product
        do your research

        • Some simple googling will usually reveal enough when looking at what actually works.

  • Curious if you can get (and how much it would be) something similar but in a small pc form (rather then a laptop with a screen/battery etc)?

    • Depends on your needs. For general computing, the 12th gen NUCs are getting cheaper, would be a better option. (like this: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/175592215238 )
For gaming the laptop graphics performance is slightly better than the 11th Gen NUC Enthusiast with a 2060m. My NUC Enthusiast is still playing AAA games at high settings without issue

    • +1

sounds like you are after an intel nuc rather than an intel nuc

      • +1

I mean there's NUC and then there's NUC you know?

  • +1

    Is 730M faster than 3060 or 3070?
Previous gen 11800H + 3070 still better choice?

    • +1

yes for most cases the 11800h + 3070 would be better in gaming

      • Definitely the 3070 is better. I am struggling with DOTA 2 at 4k 60hz

  • worth it just for the parts?

No. The battery life is pretty much non existent. Unless you plan on plugging it to your TV as a media server. Even so might as well get a low power mini pc. Given the battery is 62 Whr which is similar to most other laptops, it seems to be a design flaw and shows how power hungry this machine is. So its just gonna be burden to your power bills.

  • Can I run LLM or stable diffusion on A730M?

  • I almost pounced last time but reviews make it seem like an odd duck that doesn't seem worth it for anything other than a cheap desktop replacement, which isn't that cheap compared to an actual desktop.

  • BYO NVMe & RAM, Windows can be installed free without being authenticed, can be activated via massgrave.dev script.

  • How is this so cheap, what's the catch?

    • +2

      BYO memory & SSD

      • Ah right okay. Thanks.

I have recently purchased one and just received it and set it up 2 days ago.

On the plus side - Screen is great, 144hz is very very good at 1080P.
Very fast and snappy (I am running 64GB RAM and a 1TB SSD)

Drivers aren't the best and touchpad support won't happen until you install everything. After you Windows Update it you need to Reinstall the Video Card drivers.
It is incredibly noisy as the fans do ramp up a hell of a lot so if you are in a quiet room and doing even the most mundane tasks chances are you will hear it.
    Battery Life is horrible.

Feel free to ask any questions.

    • What's your use case and how is it for that?

How horrible is horrible on the battery life?

      • +4

Use case at the moment is a desktop replacement. I am waiting for the new AMD chips and thought this would be a good idea.
When I had finished installing all drivers on a brand new Win10 build at 75% there was an estimated 45 minutes. It died totally in under 1 hour.

    • Can you charge the laptop using the single cable of USB type C thunderbolt only?
      thanks for sharing btw :)

      • +1

Unfortunately not, I wish you could!

You need to use the included Power Brick + Barrel Plug

  • If only this was DDR4 instead of DDR5… got so many 8gb ddr4 sodimms laying around

  • +2

passmark shows this cpu 12700h can use up to 115w power
this will suck your battery dry like a cheap w………………….

  • Put 96gb ram, cannot start………I know it said only support 64gb.

Anyone tried to put 96gb ram?
