gets ready for ‘shopback did not track’ posts

    • +2

Unlike Pizza Hut, I've had no problems with Expedia tracking (both standard cashback and bank bonus, with both St. George and Westpac).

Hopefully it should be fine for everybody, fingers crossed.

      • +2

Except that there’s still no guarantee even if it’s tracked. Still chasing them for December stay, both were tracked fine. Then they declined the bank bonus part. I did submitted my westpac statement to prove it. 2 months, still escalating

        • +1

Tracking and being paid are separate issues. Good luck with getting it resolved, two months is completely ridiculous.

It's a shame how they've gone downhill and we've lost the original GYB rep.

      • How do we activate the St. George cashback? Is adding the card to our shopback account then use the same card to pay enough?

        • +1

Yes, you need to link your eligible card in the St. George Lounge in the ShopBack app.

Once linked, you should see a green text indicator saying "Successfully Enrolled", and underneath that "Use your linked card to complete purchase" with the applicable Visa or Mastercard logo and the last 4 digits of your card number.

          • +1

            @UrMumsOnlyFan: Awesome, thanks!

            • +1

@Silmo: No problem. Once linked, just purchase through the SB app using the St. George card. No special offer activation is required.

              • @UrMumsOnlyFan: Somehow when I clicked Expedia from the St. George lounge, I still see Westpac icon at the bottom of shopback app. Would that be OK?

                • +1

@Silmo: Yeah that should be fine, it's just an app design issue.

      • Alright, booked 2 trips. 1 with Westpac and 1 with St. George. Hopefully both are tracked.

    • +1

I’ve had 3 transactions with Expedia via Shopback so far: 1 from last year which was already paid; 2 from this year which were tracked and still pending for approval.

If it helps, try to book refundable hotels just in case things go wrong.

      • Yeah, agree with this, if it's refundable and doesn't track, just cancel it. Not worth the effort filing missing cashback

  • is it possible to get the westpac bonus and pay later?

    • I don't think it's addressed in the T&Cs. This comment from March indicates that it tracks, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will be paid.

You may need to pm @gotyourback (if they respond on weekends).

  • If we book a room overseas, would Expedia charge us with the destination foreign currency or $AUD?

    • I guess it doesn't matter, 10% additional cashback would still be higher than the conversion fees?

    • +1

In my experience, it is always AUD

    • +1

      AUD

  • Sad, I was literally looking at a hotel in Expedia, saw this post, went back again to Expedia via Shopback and the price of the same room jumped up by $43.

    • +1

Is the price still unchanged in Expedia when you don't go through SB?

  • -2

Just keep in mind the following:
    1. Expedia is at least 15% more expensive than booking.com or Agoda 95% of the time.
    2. When you click through any cashback sites, price is inflated.
    3. Always compare the price directly with different sites i.e. not click through google.

    • +2

You need to compare, but it's not always the case, most I'm currently looking (domestic) are same in all of them. Some hotels offer lower rate too if you book directly with them (or if you have membership with the hotel).

    • +1

Expedia is at least 15% more expensive than booking.com or Agoda 95% of the time.

At least 15% more expensive 95% of the time is a massive claim, but maybe you're right. If it is indeed 95% of the time then it should be tremendously easy to find numerous examples of a clear price difference, in fact that should happen automatically by default.

So here are five random test results for random hotels in random cities on random dates:-

      • Grace Hotel Sydney (superior twin, free cancellation) on 15-16 Aug 2024 = Agoda $299 / Booking.com $269 / Expedia (browser) $269 / Expedia (SB app) $269.
      • YEHS Hotel Sydney CBD (queen room, free cancellation) on 7-8 Sep 2024 = Agoda $229 / Booking.com $262 / Expedia (browser) $219 / Expedia (SB app) $219.
      • Brady Hotels Jones Lane Melbourne (king room, free cancellation) on 13-14 Oct 2024 = Agoda $130 / Booking.com $143 / Expedia (browser) $139 / Expedia (SB app) $139.
      • European Hotel Perth (queen room, free cancellation) on 29-30 Nov 2024 = Agoda $178 / Booking.com $207 / Expedia (browser) $181 / Expedia (SB app) $163.
      • Great Southern Hotel Brisbane (queen room, free cancellation) on 17-18 Dec 2024 = Agoda $176 / Booking.com $176 / Expedia (browser) $176 / Expedia (SB app) $176.

And anyone can draw their own conclusions from that random sample.

When you click through any cashback sites, price is inflated.

That's a definite possibility, hence the deal post deliberately and explicitly states:- As always, check and compare pricing versus the Expedia app, other booking aggregators, and directly on the hotel website. You could possibly find that the price is lower elsewhere even after all the SB cashback. (Remember that the cashback does not include any taxes such as GST in Australia or VAT and other taxes in other countries.)

That said, in my random testing above, 4 out of 5 times the Expedia price was the same for PC browser vs ShopBack app, and in one case the SB app price was actually lower than browser (which was surprising).

But in the past I have seen at least one case where the discounted price in the Expedia app was lower than the post-cashback price via ShopBack app. Hence it pays to check through different apps, browsers, aggregators, direct with the hotel, incognito mode, etc.

      • I've never seen it lower, maybe in your app, you logged in to your Expedia account, and by default it'd apply your points if you login to show the lower price (need to untick that, to avoid cashback issue)

        • +2

Not possible as my Expedia points balance is $0.00 :)

Here's a deeper test on the Expedia pricing for European Hotel Perth (2 travellers, 1 queen room, free cancellation) on 29-30 Nov 2024:-

          • Expedia via PC browser (logged in as member) = $181
          • Expedia via PC browser (not logged in) = $181
          • Expedia via PC browser (private browsing window & not logged in) = $181
          • Expedia via PC browser (via Mastercard discount link & not logged in) = $176 ("6% off")
          • Expedia mobile app = $163 ("Mobile Price 21% off")
          • Expedia via ShopBack mobile app = $163 ("Mobile Price 21% off")

I didn't think the Expedia app discount would apply in the ShopBack app, interesting.

      • five random test

Thanks for your time comparing but your random test isn't really random. All five are within Australia however a large group of holiday makers travel overseas.

Perhaps you may want to take 5 samples from Europe, 5 from Japan & Korea, 5 from SE Asia and 5 from North America, that will be more accurate.

I have to admit that my family never travel local for lesuire holidays. Tax and labour cost are too expensive here, Not a bargain at all compare to overseas. The cost of 4 nights there equal to 1 nights here.

I believe a true OZB member should earn income here, avoid paying tax as much as you can, buy expensive and luxury items mostly from overseas, invest in overseas and enjoy yourself overseas.

From my experience, 95% of the time Expedia is more expensive than others. But you could be right on local hotels.

        • +1

The random sample was fine against the wide claim "Expedia is at least 15% more expensive than booking.com or Agoda 95% of the time" with no exclusions or caveats.

Perhaps you may want to take 5 samples from Europe, 5 from Japan & Korea, 5 from SE Asia and 5 from North America, that will be more accurate.

I will run some more tests later when I have time. There is no onus on me to do so as I didn't put the claim forward, but I am curious nonetheless :)

I have to admit that my family never travel local for lesuire holidays.

You do you. No one's judging where you holiday.

I believe a true OZB member should

How anyone lives and where they spend their money is up to them.

From my experience, 95% of the time Expedia is more expensive than others.

If it is the case that Expedia is at least 15% more expensive for overseas properties 95% of the time then that would be a big issue to be aware of. It will be interesting to see the test results later.

          • -3

@UrMumsOnlyFan: Expedia offers choices of hotels worldwide.
If you limited your so called random sample to Australia only, that's a huge bias.
How many hotels are there in Australia? maybe less than 1% of world wide?
you really can't say a test from a group of 1% represents worldwide.

This is similar to when someone say everyone in this world is a millionaire because all his samples come from the top 1%.
On the other hand, I booked hotels online for my family, all over the world (except Australia).
Every time in the past 15 years if not 20, I compared different sites including Expedia.
I've never booked through Expedia because they are never the cheapest.

            • @AsukaST: Yep, as I said, the random sample was fine against the wide claim "Expedia is at least 15% more expensive than booking.com or Agoda 95% of the time" with no exclusions or caveats. There was nothing about continents, countries, cities, times of year or anything else; just the catch-all statement that anything on Expedia is at least 15% more expensive than booking.com or Agoda 95% of the time.

You've since caveated your statement, which is fine, and I look forward to running some further tests for overseas hotels.

you really can't say a test from a group of 1% represents worldwide.

Indeed. Thankfully I never said such a thing :)

Every time in the past 15 years if not 20, I compared different sites including Expedia.
I've never booked through Expedia because they are never the cheapest.

It's great that you've figured out what works for you. My only interest is testing the claim "Expedia is at least 15% more expensive than booking.com or Agoda 95% of the time [for countries other than Australia]", because that's very important to know if true.

              • +1

                @UrMumsOnlyFan:

                • Singapore - Crowne Plaza Changi Airport (standard room, free cancellation, breakfast) on 28-29 Sep 2024
                  Agoda $356 / Booking.com $356 / Expedia (browser) $356 / Expedia (SB app) $356

                • Singapore - YOTEL Orchard Road (premium queen, free cancellation) on 7-8 Oct 2024
                  Agoda $262 / Booking.com $262 / Expedia (browser) $262 / Expedia (SB app) $262

                • Singapore - Carlton Hotel Singapore (deluxe room, non-refundable) on 13-16 Nov 2024
                  Agoda $1,028 / Booking.com $1,027 / Expedia (browser) $1,015 / Expedia (SB app) $1,023

                • Singapore - PARKROYAL Collection Marina Bay (urban deluxe twin, non-refundable) on 23-25 Dec 2024
                  Agoda $1,028 / Booking.com $925 / Expedia (browser) $1,028 / Expedia (SB app) $1,028

Woohoo, finally on the 9th hotel we get a noteworthy variation :) It's only 10% rather than 15%+, but that's enough to be of interest.

                • Singapore - V Hotel Lavender (superior double/queen, free cancellation) on 14-21 Jan 2025
                  Agoda $1,298 / Booking.com $1,391 / Expedia (browser) $1,392 / Expedia (SB app) $1,392

Agoda has a lower price this time, although it's only 6.75% in this case.

Things are looking more interesting so far, although still 0 for 5 on "at least 15% more expensive … 95% of the time". (Of course this exercise is ignoring cashback too.) More random tests tomorrow.

@tanedar 10000% agree on inflated prices with a cash back link, would be foolish to believe the is actually a "deal" when affiliated links and cookies are in the mix … here is a simple test for y'all, tell us what chu gotz boi

      1. Use the cash back link for a specific hotel, and a specific date
      2. Search in TripAdvisor same dates, look for hotel
      3. Repeat 2 but in incognito mode

I personally CBF with all the BS, so paid for Accor Plus and haven't looked back. My Dawg.

      /WoofWoof

  • Has anybody’s tracked yet? It’s been 8h since I made my booking & still nothing.

    • +1

Not as yet. I find Shopback usually has tracked by the next day.

    • In my experience tracking usually takes at least 12 hours, and typically up to 24 hours.

    • Yup!, both Expedia and St George

    • Both Expedia and st George, the Westpac bonus isn't tracked yet. Hopefully I won't need to complain to thei support

  • Dangg the highest ever ?? for expedia ?? 27% WoW

  • +1

Still haven't received tracking email yet.
    Has anyone's booking tracked?

      • +1

My standard has now tracked. Waiting for westpac bonus.

    • Mine has, including the bonus

      • +1

Westpac bonus? still waiting for westpac one

        • St George. Both only Tracked an hour ago.

  • Purchased via desktop last night at 23:30 and just received notification it is checked.

    Thanks OP.

    • My standard cashbask has now tracked. Westpac bonus hasn't tracked yet.

    • did your bonus track?

      • Yes both standard and bonus tracked.
        I used ST George.

  • +1

@gotyourback are you able to help with my Westpac bonus not tracking for this deal?
Normally westpac bonus on expedia always tracked fine.

    • Try private messaging them @ https://www.ozbargain.com.au/privatemsg/msgto/252753 or otherwise email [email protected]

But suggest waiting at least 24 hours (after purchase) first. And it's very unlikely that anyone will respond until after tomorrow's public holiday in any event.

    • My Westpac bonus also hasn't been tracked

      • Has your westpac bonus tracked now?
        Mine still hasn't unfortunately

        • Sorry to hear that. SB's tracking has really gone downhill :(

Hopefully they will be able to resolve it manually without too much inconvenience. (Having said that, I'll shortly have to open a second PH enquiry with them before they've even resolved the first from last month.)

          • @UrMumsOnlyFan: Same here westpac not tracked here and Pizza hut deal ticket outstanding.
            :(

        • Just received the most awaited email, it's tracked now :)

          • @Silmo: The Westpac bonus?
What time did you book the hotel on the 8th?
Hopefully mine tracks as well today.

            • @gembel: Yes, Westpac bonus. I booked close to 5 PM on that day. Hopefully you'll get yours soon.

        • +1

Hey @gembel No worries, we can help! Our crew is on standby to investigate what's going on with your missing Westpac Bonus. Just shoot us a private message (DM) with your ShopBack info, and we'll get on the case.

The more details you can give us, the faster we can sort things out!

          • @gotyourback: westpac bonus has now tracked. took 2 days!

            • @gembel: Awesome @gembel! So happy to hear that your bonus is now showing up in your account!

Our apologies again for any trouble you had. We want your ShopBack experience to be smooth sailing, so please don't hesitate to reach out if you ever have any questions in the future.

Happy shopping (and earning Cashback)! ️

              • @gotyourback: Be good if someone got back to me. I’ve emailed help with no reply so far. Your app is really hit and miss at tracking.

                • @dankru: Hey @dankru, Could you drop us a DM with the details such as email, ticket number to check further?

              • @gotyourback: @gotyourback Can you help check what I dm-ed you? My previous Expedia were all tracked, but mysteriously the bank bonus part (was Westpac) back then was rejected. Already email the helpdesk as suggested but no update for almost 2 months. I thought that should be straighforward case as we already sent the proof that we paid in full with the correct Westpac card and the trip was already done last year?

                • @hanofee: Sure thing @hanofee, I've sent you a message!

                  • @gotyourback: @gotyourback Still nothing happened, almost another month passed. Is that it? We just wrote to help email, been asked to provide some proof, then empty promise to keep us updated (and nothing happened)?

                    • +1

@hanofee: Hey there! Thanks for letting me know, and sorry for the trouble. I've DM you for the update @hanofee

  • Neither has tracked for me. I used the app too. Sigh. Booked multiple times with Shopback on Booking.com app fine but their own built-in browser gives me grief.

Last time I had to sort this out with them they made it out like I’d somehow done something wrong. It’s your damn app ffs.

So guess I’ll be cancelling accomodation.
