    I don't need another one…..I don't need another one…

    • +14

OzBargain users homes… the final resting place for ex government computers.

  • Windows 11… Pro or Home? The item description detail at the listing actually says Windows 10 in the blue background area, but Win 11 in the title.

    • you can upgrade from home to pro & 10 to 11 for free google is your friend

      • From my googling, the MS website about upgrading mentions purchasing keys - the word suggests it's paid, but perhaps these days it's "pruchasing for free".

Any reassurance, extra sources from more Windows-savvy people?

        • +1

You can upgrade for free using a generic key, but you won't have a licence officially.

        • +1

maybe don't use MS as your source, it can be done easily & still registered legit with MS

          • @Irishness: Yes, but you might end up in a large cemetery with this method 😏

    • +1

Usually Windows Pro with these things. Ex-business PCs would have Windows 10 Pro upgradable to Windows 11 Pro. Since the license is tied to the hardware (mobo, cpu, etc), you can usually wipe the drive and reinstall Win 10 Pro and it will check digital license from MS once connected to the net.

  • +1

Man, I was gonna finally figured out why my 10 year old desktop stopped working (stupid ADHD brain). But this might be a better option.

Is there an option for gaming if you add a GPU?

    • +1

It's too micro to add any peripheral cards. Maybe a 2.5" SSD if these are the same form factor as a few 5080s I've got at work.

    • you need at least an SFF sized chassis for GPU

      • There are variants of these USFF machines that had dGPUs, but good luck finding them at these prices. You can sometimes find the proprietary dGPU cards available via eBay et al, but again pricing may be more than desired.

    • https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/196417870861 maybe this, has more RAM but no SSD

      • +1

ETA Prime used one of these (older model) and added a low profile RTX 3050. Had to trim a small portion of the chassis but seemed to work just fine.

  • tempted to get one for emulation box, can the cpu do up to switch with the integrated gpu?

    • +1

Not really. My i5 10500t could do some switch. Im now using a i7 13700t and it does all but doom, batman and redout.

    • You’d be surprised. The HD620 graphics on the Intel Chip (older gen) can handle 3DS at 3xRes if you don’t mind some shader compilation stuttering when entering new areas. So I imagine the HD630 to do even better. Switch unlikely.

To answer the same two questions that seem to pop up on every. micro. form. factor. deal.

Yes it can output HDMI 4K60, you'll need a https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08DKGDDFQ

Yes it can run dual network cards, you'll need a https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005686418462.html to replace the WiFi card,

    • +1

      Thank you!
out of curiosity. why does it need a DP to HDMI converter? does DP not handle 4K?

      • +3

The converter is for a TV that lacks DP input.

This PC can do HDMI1.3, but not HDMI 2.0, so needs the active converter for 4k60 over hdmi.

  • Dell OptiPlex 7040 SFF i5-6500 16GB RAM 256GB SSD PC Win10 PRO WiFi @

    $148.99 delivered

    https://metrocom.com.au/product/dell-optiplex-7040-sff-i5-65…

    • also a lesser processor tho ya?
      i5 8500T > SFF i5-6500

      Does Ram matter for decoding?

      • +2

Yea CPU is worse but i figured adequate for cheaper price.

Not sure why im so attached to 16GB RAM i think that's what got me ( in case i want to keep windows and virtualization Linux )

      • yikes, which one is better please? i5 8500T or SFF i5-6500 with more ram?
I assume with no ebay plus I better get from metrocom?

        • +3

The 8500 by a mile. Much newer, more cores, less power.

          • @The Value: power consumption*, as in less electricity needed, which is a +

        • Definitely 8500. I'd stay away from any 7th Gen. Windows 11 is supported from 8th Gen onwards and WIndows 10's end of life is October 2025.

    • Good find. Noting it's much bigger though.

  • +3

Just noticed that 16GB version is back as well…

    $259.00 regular, minus 20%: $207.20
minus 22% for ebay plus: $202.02

Is $24 more worth the 8GB extra and the convenience of not having to look for RAM and upgrade yourself?

    • +1

      Yep absolutely worth it.
You could maybe find 8Gb RAM for that price or close to it (can see a few around $25-27), as long as your postage/delivery cost is $0, and you value your time at $0, and the risk of the RAM being damaged or DOA by you or others as also $0. That sounds like a lot of assumptions.

    • Definitely! I bought another litre PC(not dell or from this seller) recently. It was advertised as having 8GB of ram, I thought the same as you and upgrading the ram would be easy. But when I got it and opened it up, it had 2 4GB sticks in it. Which means I will have to buy an additional 16GB of ram if I want to upgrade it, instead of just buying a 8GB stick.

    • Thanks for replies. Unfortunately "This item is out of stock."

      • But not this one teehee (yet)

        • +1

That's even better value. Thank you!

Hope it's not much louder due to more RAM and 3GHz processor.

          • +1

@pizzaguy: Not necessarily better value, just different use cases. For my uses (and a lot of people chasing lower power consumption) the 'T' CPU is preferred.

            • @henno: Is it really that much of a difference?
Wouldn't a faster processor just throttle down and use similar amount of power ?

              • @elcheapoinoz: If that was the case, then laptops would have 'faster' desktop CPUs.

    • Thank you for the link! returned my 8500T and got the beefier version :)

      • What did you get instead of what? My link is 8500T.

        • I got this one (eBay)

  • Handy little footprint but it won’t fit many 3.5” hard drives for movies?

    • +2

      Zero 3.5” drives.
