Can we get away with the modem ? Why we have to buy from tpg ?

    • -1

If you running g.fast you need a new modem capable of g.fast specs.

The one they give you is the adtran one.

So yes best to get it

      • what about if you already have the modem from the same company and same plan but just want to sign up as a new customer again ?

        • You already have the adtran modem?

Just use a different name and it will be a "new user"

          • @Turd: …i just asked my son and he is iinet not tpg …so it will be new company haha

    • Does it include a free modern?
I've been using a 6 year old Kogan modern with no issues.
20ms ping to gaming servers from WA to East coast, and 104 Mbps on a 100 Mb plan.

  • I used this for a few years and it was amazing. Easily the best internet speed I've ever had and even led me to win some online tournaments where I won largely due to the speed.

Sounds like hyperbolic bullshit but was genuinely very good.

30 days written notice to cancel service. Just an fyi

    13.1

    • Standard on all TPG contacts.

      Try https://capti.com.au/

They offer slightly better using g.fast

      • Why are you spamming capti? Genuinely curious why I would pay so much more for capti compared to say tpg or exetel?

I'm paying $99 at exetel for 1000mb/40 and getting that speed almost all the time. Am I missing something? What is g fast?

        • I'd guess because people don't know the difference between ISPs, NBN vs Vision Network (VN, formerly TPG FTTBW) vs Gigacomm. Capti was the 1st on VN to give us hope of not being stuck on 100Mbps and they've slamdunked it imho

NBN Max speed for FTTB is 100/40 Mbps
VN offers 1Gbps/50Mbps (pending many infrastructure caveats) for FTTB

NBN could've provided FTTP, G.Fast or reused existing HFC for FTTB but they didn't. VN however do and VN's RSPs are slowly coming online for us not lucky enough to be FTTP upgradable on NBN, which at this point I don't even want as its a monopoly, we need more ISP competition in Australia…

          Edit:
          Checked exetel
          NBN 100/40 - $74.99 p.m 6mnths then $88.99 p.m
          NBN 250/40 - n/a (They don't offer 1Gbps plans for FTTB)
          NBN 1000/50 - n/a (They don't offer 1Gbps plans for FTTB)
          VN 100/40 - $74.99 p.m 6mnths then $88.99 p.m
          VN 250/25 - $83.99 p.m 6mnths then $98.99 p.m
          VN 1000/50 - n/a (They don't offer 1Gbps plans for FTTB)

          Capti
          VN 100/40 - $69 p.m
VN 250/40- $89 <- I'm on this as my max linespeed is 700/38Mbps, I always get 280/38. Compared to when on NBN I'd experience the 'peak hour slowdown'. Haven't had that on Vision
          VN 1000/50- $109

          • @Jay-rad: Mate, what in the f is this plan for a dollar!? this is for a place with HFC when looking up exetel, etc.

            • +2

@Rorschach: Sign up and see how it is, I bet thats an error heh. We need free internet in this country if its under 25Mbps, its required in our day and age but capitalism wins I guess. But before I start getting political might as well try that plan out lol.

FYI Thats NBN not VN so YMMV as I can only vouch for Captis G.Fast, havent used any of there other services (NBN or VDSL)

          • @Jay-rad: Isn’t gigacomm a fundamentally different setup?

        • G.fast is capable of 1000Mbps over short distances with a mix of fibre and copper. Vision network use G.fast on FTTB for speed tiers up to 1000/50. nbn don't use G.fast on FTTB and has a maximum of 100/40.

You have 1000/50 on FTTP or HFC. Capti FTTB doesn't apply to you.

    • They have a customer loyalty team so it pays to ask.

  • Don't bother this mob, had constant drop outs with them for months, never got above 60mbps on a 100mbps plan, with a wifi 6 router + cat6 cable, constant drop outs after 7pm, 30 days written notice to cancel over charged me on my final bill and took months to rectify, absolutely abysmal support wait times.

NBN or TPG / Vision Network FTTB?

If you dont know the difference then likely you have NBN

    • I have had g.fast for almost 2yrs. Only had one dropout that I have noticed the entire time.
If you get dropouts it is likely due to poor cabling in your building.

      • Looks like aussieBB came by and replaced all the cabling in my building after churning over, since i havent had any issues since.

        • nbn would have done that.

  • Everyone that has Vision Network FTTB (aka TPG FTTB) can acess G.fast speeds if they check their apartment address with capti

    https://capti.com.au/

    • I recently ordered TPG FTTB but my unit building is not showing up on capti's website .

  • Also if anyone is interested the differnces and history of TPG FTTB as outlined in my long post:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15294724/redir

So basically everything TPG FTTB is mow owned and run by Vision Networks

  • Fibre to the Building is not available at your address
The good news is nbn® is available in your area

  • I got this on Capti when I search my address.

    Fast 25/10
Capti NBN offers typical evening speeds of 25Mbps/10Mbps
    $1.00 monthly
    No Setup fee

    • That's NBN, you do not have Vision Netowrk (old TPG FTTBW) FTTB

      • Yes, but why 1$ per month?

  • Not bad but have been with Capti for $89 a month consistently hitting 260 down and 50 up and the ping is lower its ever been, happy I found one ISP that just works.

    • Echo this. Capti good.

My US West ping is 165ms from QLD
      250/50 is always 280/48

  • Currently paying 50/20 on Superloop $69 per month. Thinking of switching, never had any issues with Superloop. How does TPG compare?

    • This is not nbn. Can you get TPG FTTB?

      • When I check my address it says FTTB. What's the difference between NBN FTTB and TPG FTTB?

EDIT: Just read the deal again. So it's not NBN.

        • nbn FTTB has a max speed of 100/40. TPG only do 100/20 for new customers.

TPG FTTB has a max speed of 500/25.

          • @Twix: I don't mind that. I'll be happy with 100/20.

But wondering about service and dropouts. Superloop has been really good and never remember contacting them because it just works.

            • @kongkee: nbn FTTB with TPG 100/20 is $79.99/m for 6 months and $89.99/m ongoing after 6 months.

Yeah Superloop have a good network on the backend.

            • @kongkee: I've never had any unplanned outage on Vision FTTB in the past 6 months since I signed up.

I also never had an issue with SL NBN.

        • Basically different networks (ISPs) with different retail providers (RSPs). This is great for competition as right now the majority market share is NBN RSPs trying to outdo eachother price wise, but restricted by NBNs pricing structure, Vision Network doesn't ideally have to follow that as its a different ISP

          • @Jay-rad: Thanks for the info guys.

Basically my worry is that after 1 year when this deal expires, I'm back in the market for NBN plans, which don't look great and almost the same accross ISP.

I love my current (legacy) plan with Superloop 50/20 $69 per month. I don't know if I can see similar deals the next year when this deal's gone. I don't wanna pay $75 per month for a 50/20 which seems to be the trend.

  • For what it is worth, I was able to upgrade to the 500mbs plan as an existing TPG nbn fttb customer. New acct was required, but they said they would waive the 6mth contract as was off contract with my existing plan. I couldn't get them to budge off the $20 prepayment rort tho.

    • Is Download capped at 500Mbps? Do a https://www.speedtest.net/ and share the results ID :)

      e.g. https://www.speedtest.net/result/16345925611
(I'm on vision network with Capti on 250/40 plan)

      • +1

Will do when the installation is completed, only signed up last night. The sales agent wasn't definitive when I asked if it actually capped only saying that 500 is the expected speed….

    • +1

Let us know as I am in the same boat but having difficulty to get TPG to change. Seems like I have to cancel and sign up. Also no guarantee on double charging as they are notorious for that.

      • +2

The Tech just completed my installation and much to my surprise am getting 900 down and 46 up. I am on level 4 of a 10ish year old block and fortunately directly above the MDF so the run wouldn't be so long. He said that TPG don't cap but play it safe with the advertised speed given the variations in cabling etc. Overall extremely happy with the outcome.

Now just to make sure that TPG cancel my existing service and waive my 6mths contract which they are yet to do.

        • I am not that lucky. TPG is difficult in trying to get ID check etc etc. So 3 days, still not getting anywhere.

          • @c2pv1ru5: Oh, I was fortunate that the rep I spoke to didnt make me do the ID checks etc when creating the new account. Perhaps because I was kicking up a stink about the $20 rort he just wanted to push it through but more likely because it was so new they didn't really know what they were doing. It took over 1hr on the phone to want should have been no more than 20mins. My concern now is that they follow through and cancel my old service and pro-rata the remaining time. We dont sign up to TPG for their service so good luck with it.

  • After having the TPG FTTB Max plan for a couple of days, I've tried optimising the TPG FTTB connection by using a shorter RJ11 phone line to my new modem, and then running a longer Cat6 cable to my ASUS XT8 mesh wifi/router. This improved the speed from 350ish to 450ish compared to my original setup which had a 10m RJ11 phone line running from the outlet to where my ASUS router was.

I've noticed there's some pretty clear variability in the speedtest results when running directly on the ASUS router (rather than via speedtest.net on my PC) where it ranges from 410Mbps up to a peak of 465Mbps. It seems to hover around the 440-450 mark most of the time though.

Are there any further tips on how I could improve this further? I've tried resetting the modem and router a few times which didn't really make much difference - so I wonder if a longer period of it being off might improve it?

    • Nothing else you can do. Install the Windows program and see if you get closer to 500Mbps.

    • +1

Get shortest RJ11 cable you can to the Adtran. Next step is replacing the old crap wires from MDF to your unit.

      • Hire a cabler to speed test each point along the route to your Router. They can terminate a temp rj11 jack, plug in the adtran to get sync, you run laptop speedtest off that.
      • at MDF
      • at IDF
      • at your rj11 phone jack
Find weakest link, hire cabler to replace & pull new cat6/cat6a cable from MDF/IDF to your unit, rejoice.

Welcome to G.fast :) Check the whirlpool forums as it has tons of information but we're hardstuck on the quality&age of the copper cable coming from the MDF to our ADTran. https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum/90?g=415

      • Don't laugh but I was testing this again today and was getting 420ish on my Windows gaming desktop over ethernet, but my ASUS router was reporting speeds of 470 and even my iPad Pro M2 managed to get 470 over wifi.

I thought I'd experiment disabling the various Bitdefender protection features (ie firewall, vulnerability scanning, etc) and my speeds jumped immediately to 470+ on my PC. This wasn't an issue for me before but clearly there's some overhead/loss due to the ongoing scanning.

Regardless though I'm going to leave the various protections enabled but thought this was amusing to see. Turning them back on and my speed went back down to 440ish.

    • +2

I can hit download 600Mbps ~ 700Mbps with my mobile in speedtest.
My laptop can only hit download 500Mbps.

I am using the TP-LINK VX420-G2v (provide by TPG)

    • How old is the building? My building is 17yrs old and get 1.1gbit

      • Built pre 2000. Maybe there's another bottleneck somewhere else - but the 450+ is good enough for me. My old building down the road is a similar age and I could get near gigabit from Gigacomm but they had to run some new cabling through the risers. I used to be quite far from the distribution point on the floor so the best I could get was about 950ish.

  • Have not heard of FTTB, only FTTC or FTTP

Is B basement or what is it?

    • Building and or basement. You need to live in an apartment building with this particular service connected. Unrelated to NBN

      • ok but FTTP is usually given for new apartment/unit, then where does FTTB come in place here?

        • My apartment has FTTB, FTTP, via TPG and DGTek. On top of FTTB provided by NBN. It just depends on what different providers decide to put in.

          • @Grannular: ok I see I did search its only FTTP here, so that means this deal is meaningless to me

  • Just some feedback for those interested. Got the 500mbit plan installed this morning and get 1.1gbit/150mbit. Pretty happy with this as it replaces $79 DGTek 250/250 connection.

    • How long did it take from the time you signup? I haven't even received the confirmation email.

      • 3 days

        • How did you get the upgraded network.. Did you pay for the fibre?

          • +1

@AlienC: It's FTTB with G.Fast. The advertised plan is 500mbit, but it looks like they leave the actual connection at the best speed you can sync at. For me, that was 1.1gbit. I was surprised as my building is 17yrs old

            • +1

@Grannular: Ah wow nice. I'm home residential so I don't think this can apply to me but I checked my FTTP NBN UPGRADE schedule date and it is now June 2025 so one year more wait fingers crossed it doesn't change too much.

              • +1

@AlienC: This has nothing to do with NBN. This is a non-NBN network

                • @Grannular: Any idea how much something like this would cost for a home residential

                  • +1

@AlienC: You can't get it. It is apartment building specific

        • I already had FTTN with Launtel. Does it require additional installation once the modem is delivered or it's plug and play? Thanks

          • @igeekyayush: Do you have TPG FTTB (non-NBN) to your place? Normally requires additional install to patch into their DSLAM.

            • @Grannular: I don't think so. Maybe the last tenant would have it. But when I got NBN done months back, the installation guy had to come out and do some wiring in the building's basement.

  • Just signed up. I was using Launtel for temporary usage and Telstra 5G Internet. Let's see how this goes.

  • We pay $79.99/month for 50/20 TPG NBN FTTN (but on some promotional thing where they boosted our speed for some months can't remember until when I think 12 months so now we are on 86/20 basically until the program is over) all because we are on nbn FTTN and can't get onto this I believe as it is TPG FTTB only whatever that is (just found out this is apartment related so definitely doesn't affect us on a good note though I checked when our fttp upgrade schedule is set and it looks like 2025 June is the estimated date but obviously subject to change with construction hurdles)

Don't forget you can check your FTTP upgrade schedule here

    https://www.nbnco.com.au/residential/upgrades/more-fibre

  • damn, have FTTB but not tpg FTTB. great prices, really struggling to find a decent deal in that vicinity. messing around with commbank yello for More NBN seems the closest
