Overseas company thinks it can get away with what it does overseas.. NOT! Thanks Australia!! Best country on earth
Doesnt matter how much you hate the Libs or Labor.. they are both still better then most other governments from around the world

      • -1

TPG is an Australian company starting with a single computer store ! Just usual dodgy Asian businesses that we see all around Australia but they still survive and are thriving

        • +2

          Its listed here as Foreign

          https://www.canstarblue.com.au/internet/telcos-australian-ow…

I got my info from that but it could be wrong or the largest share holders Foreign :) oh well

          • +1

@vid_ghost: There's no way to tell the origin of shareholders though, even when listed on the share registry it doesn't mean you know who the ultimate owner is. Investment banks are often the face of the registry, but they hold it on behalf of their clients, investment funds, institutions etc…

I'd say TPG/Telstra/Aussie broadband are all aussie owned being listed in Australia would mean a large local retail holding and large local institution holding (ie our super funds and future fund)

So…. What happened? Their critical information pdf it still shows this fee, plus a $100 setup fee to jumper the mdf… lol

        https://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/court-dismisses-accc%E…

The court actually found TPG was not false and misleading, and that the terms that allow it to keep the prepayment when customers exited their plans was not unfair.

On appeal by the ACCC, again the court found TPG was not misleading its customers: https://www.crn.com.au/news/tpg-handed-another-victory-over-…

        • Thanks for an answer. As a consumer, you'd think you get that $20back or can use the entirety of it, which neither are true.

A rebranding of the terminology on TPGs part would go a long way to avoid these accc engagement and overal confusion it feels like

          • @Jay-rad:

As a consumer, you'd think you get that $20back or can use the entirety of it, which neither are true.

I can't remember what was reported as TPG's argument in court but I believe it is on the basis that this is similar to prepaid mobile phone service, hence the term 'prepayment' and why you don't get the credit back when you leave. You also don't get the remaining credit back with a prepaid mobile phone service if you choose to exit out of their plans .

I managed to get back the $20 when cancelling ADSL2 after threatening to go to Fair Trade and TIO.

  • +1

Is the top speed actually capped at 500 or is that just the “minimum” advertised speed? I’m on capti $109 for gigabit but this would be a very good deal if the 500 speed tier was actually uncapped.

    • I can't find any info saying it's faster than 500Mbps. The TPG branding just says FTTB max.

      • +2

Shame, hopefully Capti adjusts their pricing soon.

        • +1

Yep I'm with Capti but thats a big price difference.

          • @Sweet3st: I wonder if tpg cap the speed.

            Capti as you know dont.

      • +1

Same. TPG Rep only speak about the 250.
"The confirmed speed for the FTTB250 is at 220mbps download and 25mbps upload."

Would be keen to know if the 500Mbps is 500-1000

        • The 25 upload is a bit tough going back to as well. Capti advertise 1000/50 but I’m consistently getting 100 up speeds since day 1

        • +1

250/25 is upto 265/50 and 500/25 is up to 920/110 with thier NTU. They advertise the speeds below what it is capable.

      • +1

I'm getting 460ish consistently when running speed tests to various servers. Still better than expected given I thought this building had dodgy old wiring limiting me to 100 up until two days ago.

    • I've got TPG FTTB and I get 110/39.

I've been on them for ages so maybe it's not a 100/25 plan. I think it was 100/40 when I signed up.

      • -1

It's always advertised as 100/20 to compete with NBN
But realistically everyone gets 100/40 and due to their overprovisning again to compete with NBN they make it 110/39

You should try G.fast it will blow your mind

        • Thanks for the info.

I think the 250/500 tiers of this TPG offering are using G.fast.

I checked out capti which advertises G.fast and its $90 for 250/40 or $109 for 1000/50.

I ended up just calling up TPG and asking can I just cancel my plan and sign up to the 500/25 deal and they agreed.

So for $5 less than what I am paying now a month + $20 I get 5x my current download speed (hopefully) for the next 12 months.

The contract is for only 6 months too so if I need to I can get it disconnected without having to pay the $99.95 disconnection fee when my lease expires after that or just downgrade to my current plan if I wish.

          • @TightLikeThisx: Let us know how it all goes.

From reading WP and interwebz, if you're not on the 250Mbps or above plans, you'll be changed back to VDSL2, from G.FAST. But keen to see if thats not the case

            • @Jay-rad:

Let us know how it all goes.

Will do. Ill give an update here.

From reading WP and interwebz, if you're not on the 250Mbps or above plans, you'll be changed back to VDSL2, from G.FAST. But keen to see if thats not the case

I think this is correct. The setup guide for the modem pictured on the sign in page mentions that the Adtran® Gfast NTU is supplied with the 250/500 plans. Whether this holds true over time is another story though.

For historical records sake my speed at 7:50pm according to google is currently:
              109.6 Mbps download
              36.9 Mbps upload
              Latency is 7ms

              On speedtest.net it is:
              111.79 Mbps download
              37.05 Mbps upload
              Latency is 7ms

            • +2

@Jay-rad: The technician just finished up.

I've just tested the connection with the equipment TPG supplied. They posted out the modem but the technician supplied the NTU.

              On speedtest.net I get:
              936.07 Mbps download
              47.16 Mbps upload
              Latency is 5ms

The other speed testing sites aren't reliable as the test number is still increasing when the test terminates

I heard the Vision Network person talking to the technician. They told the technician the line synced at 1.1 Gbps download and 100 Mbps upload.

Real life this equates to watching an 8K video on youtube at 558.034 Mbps with only a couple of dropped frames (probably my computer TBH).

I downloaded an ISO of Microsoft 11 and it ranged between 60-98 MB/s.

              • @TightLikeThisx: Thanks! For all the details.

I might try and churn between providers to take advantage of these promos now :)

                • @Jay-rad: I think the copper in my building is relatively new.

These would probably be the max speeds you could expect.

                  Goodluck!

              • @TightLikeThisx: Yeah if you join capti you will get the full upload speed, TPG likely caps it

                • @Turd: That's wild. Thanks for the heads up.

If my income improves I will consider it but similar speeds for $39 less per month is not bad for now.

              • +1

@TightLikeThisx: Are you using a VX420? They have a default shaper of 50Mbps on the EWAN. Ask TPG to remove the shaper and you should get close to double the upload

                • +2

@Katana95: It's funny because I changed my router on the weekend and noticed that my upload speed increased.

I was going to post about it here but you did so now I don't have to so thanks. :)

I just did a test and got 913Mbps down and 110Mbps up. I think the download speed on the router I am using now is a little slower. I was getting 940Mbps with the supplied router.

Thanks for the heads up anyway. So glad I took advantage of this offer. I pay $5 less than what I was paying before and get 8-9x the download speed and 2-3x the upload speed. OP made my year.

              • @TightLikeThisx: how have you found TPG routing and speed now?

                • @memez: The speeds are the same. Honestly it's overkill for me. The upload speed is useful though.

I suspect that many sites actually cap their download speeds.

Things like windows update are fine. I just downloaded something from apple and it was 70MB/s.

Hard to argue at the price point of this deal.

    • It is up to 1G due to 1G LAN hand off on the NTU.
I am still on the trial and get above 1G.
They advertise at 500/50 to avoid complaints if some customers can not get the full speed due to bad or long copper in the building.

  • Does anyone know what’s the cheapest nbn available right now? Planning to switch.

    • What speed tier?

      • NBN 50 would be great. NSW

        • +1

Kogan is $59/month for 6 months then $69/month.

Don't really see much for cheaper. Otherwise, just keep churning

          • @Caped Baldy: What providers have new user benefits to consider churning through? Just did a quick search and saw Aussie BB and CBA customers having perks (discounts) on more nbn.

Btw, would this TPG deal be better than Kogan $59?

        • Yeah you're looking at around $60 for nbn 50/20. Keep switching ISP.

          Exetel 50/20 $60.99/m for 6 months.
          Superloop 50/20 $65/m for 6 months.

          • +1

@Twix: I reckon the FTTB 100 on this deal would be a better choice for me at $54.99 with 6 months contract…

          • @Twix: Is there a cooldown before going back to a provider?

        • MoreNBN is ~57$ if you have commbank yello everyday plus, but thats nbn without landline, which is 8$/month

    • +1

Does anyone know what’s the cheapest nbn available right now?

12/1 plans would be the cheapest…

      • Technically my current NBN50 acts like NBN12, but expensive

    • +1

Same. My Superloop just went from $69 to $85 for 100/20. Churning through ISP's and insurances etc gets so goddamn boring.

    • +1

I'm currently paying $35.28 per month for 'more' with CBA discount. Can't remember what speed I ainguo up for though.

      • Thanks mate, it looks like I've got the offer available too :)

      • Shows $48.80 for NBN25 for me (Value NBN) with commbank discount. Hmmm 🤨

      • I nearly signed up for that but decided on Superloop instead. How's the speed?

        • Good enough for 2 people working from home and having simultaneous MS Teams meetings. Also haven't noticed any issues from streaming services after hours but I'm still using an old plasma TV not a modern 4k one.
So all in good enough for me.

  • +3

I am surprised overall NBN prices have not came down yet..

    • +6

Agreed! Would like some cheaper 25/and 50mbs plans around $50 price range too

      • Currently with Exetel. 25/10 for 59.99. Pretty much the cheapest I could find.
New customer gets $10 off for the first 6 months.

        • Thats the thing, they are normally cheap for new customer and that too only for 6 months.. there are lot of providers but not much of compition…

          • @DaveD: yeah i hate that, new customers and only 6 months then you churn to another provider… its constantly churning to get a better rate
when it would be easier if the company you are with, gave you a good rate or discount so then you stay with them as a customer

    • 1000/50 and 250/25 had a $20/m price cut last year and with deals you can get an extra $20/m off. 50/20 went up $5/m.

  • +11

NBN pricing is some bullshit I tell you what.

  • Do I count as a new customer if I'm with iinet FTTB (not NBN)?

    • Yeah

  • -2

This is not an Aussie company .. if anyone cares
    https://www.canstarblue.com.au/internet/telcos-australian-ow…

    • +4

Canstar cares about the referral fees it gets paid per click (PPC whore digital agency) and nothing else by writing useless blog posts

    • +1

Does it have anything to do with the deal? Who cares if TPG is Aussie company or not, the most importantly whether the deal is good / not.

      • If it was a Russian or North Korean company would you have no moral issues? Some people do

        • Yes but everyone knows TPG isn’t NK nor Russian company. With your concern, almost every deal here isn’t Aussie Company (Amazon, eBay…)

  • what is min charge mean currently i pay 85 a month for nbn 100 seems i get double speed for 80 a month ongoing

    • This doesn't apply to nbn FTTB. Can you get TPG FTTB?

      • Fibre to the Building is available at your address
Alternatively nbn® and Home Wireless Broadband are also available in your area

        • You pay $30 extra for the 1st month on TPG FTTB.

Minimum charge for the 1st month includes a $10 modem/router delivery fee and a $20 prepayment fee.

What is your nbn tech type?

          • @Twix: Is the $20 repayment fee payed monthly ontop the cost?

            • @OneSilver: It's for the 1st month and you won't get charged extra as long as you don't use the pay as you go phone calls.

A minimum $20 prepayment (‘Prepayment’) is required at registration and will be used for calls outside of the included value for your service.

      • Does this mean this is NOT an NBN service?

        • TPG FTTB is not the same as nbn FTTB.

  • +1

Ended up signing up for the promo since my iinet plan is $74.99 for 100Mbps plan… seems like a no brainer for the same service; but this time I'm trying the unlimited so let's see if it gets anywhere near 500Mbps.

One thing which did strike me as odd during the sign up was I had to waive my rights under CSG…. it looks like the main impact is I lose the ability to complain if they're late/etc to the installation.

    • +1

      https://www.tpg.com.au/terms_conditions/fttb
      1.7
The FTTB service is not a standard telephone service and the Customer Service Guarantee (CSG) does not apply. You may be acquiring a voice service bundled with the Service and that voice service may require you to waive rights to the CSG

If you pick 250/500Mbps plan, TPG'll provide 2 devices , 1 Network Termination Unit (NTU) and 1 Modem.

Can you report back the model number of that NTU? Would appreciate it.

I'm using Capti Internets FTTB (who also uses Vision Network), wondering if they chose a different brand/model. Capti uses an ADTran 422G bridge. FWIW Capti had no setup fees, free NTU, free technician call out, etc

      • NTU is not required for everyone, only those where the dslam is small or such the reverse power NTU isnt for everyone.

Pretty sure they provide the same adtran g.fast modem

TPG FTTB also uses vision networks.

        It is the same thing.

        • For G.Fast ADTran NTU is required.

Whirlpool forums confirmed its the same model.

      • I picked the 500Mbps plan, and the only hardware I've received in the mail today from Startrack is the tp-link AX5400 VX420-G2v. Coincidentally it's nearly identical to the VX420-G2h which I currently use for iinet so I assume there must be minor hardware revisions.

    • so you were able to sign up again at the cheaper rate even though your not a new customer ? my son is with them but their plan jumped to $75pm

      • I went from an iiNet branded FTTB to TPG. Let's see though as all I've done is register.

      • I just managed to do it over the phone.

I am on TPG FTTB 100mbps plan (not NBN) and off contract.

I had to cancel my existing account and create a new account. A technician has to come also and set up the new modem.

        • does the technician still need to come if you already have FTTB installed by iinet

          • +1

@TrustNoBody: Good question, TPG Chat agent said yes. (But this is all new to TPG so maybe lack of training)

Which doesn't make sense since we'd already have the NTU and be jumpered in the MDF.

In ideal world, it'd be like changing NBN providers, no tech visit required

            • @Jay-rad: yes as my son got his unit hooked up with FTTB about 1.5 years ago with iinet and i told him about tpg cheaper plan as his plan has now jumped from $54 to $75 i think , but he won’t like having a day off work to wait around for a tech to come only to say he didn’t need anything installed ..

          • @TrustNoBody: I got called to book in a technician today but given I'm also with iinet, and the modem received in the mail today is nearly identical to my iinet model - TPG sent a VX420-G2v whilst I already have a VX420-G2h.

My question is whether I want to switch over to the new modem or not since I already got bridge mode working on the G2h a long time ago so that I could use my ASUS mesh wifi.

Edit: technician arrived and brought the Adtran modem!

            • +2

@jace88: Speedtest is showing 5ms/461.68/55.16 on my Asus router connected to the Adtran modem on the Max plan. Bit sad I'm not quite hitting 500Mbps but it's far better than my 100Mbps connection with iiNet on the same FTTB for similar money.

            • @jace88: so you did need a tech to install new wiring or just install the modem ?

              • @TrustNoBody: No new wiring but they had to go down to see the building manager for access to the comms room. He also left a tone generator on the line in my apartment so I assume he was making sure it met minimum spec or something before doing whatever he did. Was all done in <15mins. The old tp-link modem/router combo from iinet was unplugged, and the new one from TPG was unopened in the box, as we plugged the new Adtran modem directly into my Asus mesh wifi.

                • @jace88: oh ok so pretty fast ..did they give you a time frame on when they were coming ? or just am / pm booking ? as my son gets home from work roughing 3:30 most days but i dare say i will need to go wait for the tech ..

                  • +1

@TrustNoBody: Sorry I missed this message and probably too late - but basically a 4 hour window with a promise to give me a call/message half an hour beforehand.

                    • @jace88: that’s ok ..yeah he said he will book it when the takes a few days off work ..thx

                      • +1

@TrustNoBody: In all honesty though it's really quick. I think he spent maybe 15 minutes in total including the time he spent walking down to the MDF/comms room. It's literally plug in the Adtran modem into the phone outlet, turn it on, and that's it. He calls a guy to confirm line speed and job done.

                        • @jace88: yeah i think it was longer when he first did the original fttb install cos he couldn’t find the main electric room he needed ..
