Having had both Amazon Alexa/Echo devices, and google devices,
    Google all the way.

My echo dots/shows all giving me issues after about 2 years. Also google assistant works better for me than alexa assistant.

    • Thanks for that. Was looking into options to get a decent digital photo frame ala Lenovo Smart Frame, which has now been discontinued.

This was closest probably a better option noting other things it can be used for.

If you don't need it on a wall, go with Nest Hub Max.

Excellent option. However, just realised that the screen size is 10 compared to 15 on Echo Show. In saying so, noting the design of Nest Hub max, 10 inch is probably apt.

How does the google devices work with Ring devices. Cos yeah my echo show is mostly jsut a clock at this stage. and it doesn't even do that well with its constant adds taht appear and have to be turned off every month or so.

      • Not sure, I don't have ring devices so can't comment.

I have this and its perfect for what I need- photo frame, reminders/calendars, weather info, grocery list, spotify play list in one screen. It also works perfectly with my Ring video doorbell where it automatically shows me who's at the door without having to say a command. It is wall mounted in our dining area and whenever we have guests we take a photo using it. Biggest hit with our guesst though is a game call Music Quiz- like Name that Tune and Artist game between 2+ number of people.

    • Nice, would be interested to know how it well it connects and performs with Eufy devices.

      • it works with euFY doorbell but when someone rings the DB you still have to ask alexa " show me the frontdoor camera" whereas with Ring itll automatically open a screen. that was my biggest consideration when I was choosing between eufy and Ring doorbells.

        • Fair enough, I replaced my ring with Eufy because of local storage over subscription based model. But having the functionality of automatically displaying the video is very convenient.

@notChatGPT: yeah the yearly subscription is a deal breaker for most. Took me a little over a year before I finally subscribed. I think for common people like me who do not intend to use it as smart home controller, it is a very fun and useful device. The Drop In feature is also very handy for me when Im at the groceries and wife's busy in the kitchen and cant pickup the phone. I'm at risk of sounding like an amazon rep but I have at least 3 people who bought this after seeing how it works in my home. :b

    • Can you get Plex video app on it?

I have purchased this recently. Confirm it is not that customisable, but if you only see this is a digital photo frame (that can be updated via wifi) + video camera device, then $300 has no comparable on the market at this size.

It works will for these two functions. Can also play music quite well via Spotify.

If you want this as a "smart device" then you will be disappointed. Even the widget screen is not very customisable.

Note Alexa video has a "drop in" function that allows you to give permitted contacts to open video call without their interaction (so a bit like a security camera). Useful for elderly who doesn't know how to use a tablet.

  • They stopped allowing home assistant to run on it, otherwise would have been great for that.
Planning to use an old laptop or tablet to constantly have HA on, not as big as this obviously

    • I've just bought a couple of these digital photo frames for (really) belated mother's day presents. I plan on getting root access, striping what I can, and then setting up my own sync and slide show apps.

If I'm successful, I'll get another one for my own home as a Home Assistant dashboard.

  • EDIT: If anyone wants one, 1 item now available for Click and Collect in Osborne Park (WA)

if you only want a digital frame , buy this instead Samsung 32" LS03C QLED The Frame FHD Smart TV 23 $799

    • Cheaper to buy a nicely bezelled 32" monitor and a Chromecast

Wish there is a nest product similar
