It’s worth a few bucks but definitely not what they charge.
They continually change the course and pad more and more of the same regurgitated exercises presumably so non premium users get more ads.

  • You've got the conversion to AUD on the monthly rate wrong.

  • +9

Just use Duolingo for Schools lol.

    • What? Tell us more?

      • +2

Gives you the same perks as Super and is totally free.

        • It’s not all the same perks, just removes the hearts feature / ads.

          • +1

@CommuterPolluter: What features differ? I also get unlimited attempts at Legendary challenges which for me as a completionist, is the most important.

            • @Imnuts7: Just personalised practice and leaderboards. If you’re in a class then no personalised practice + leaderboard is of your class only.

              • +2

@CommuterPolluter: There is a setting to enable league stuff in classrooms.

                • @Imnuts7: Hey that works, thanks. I guess the only feature we are still missing is the personalised practice, which isn’t really a big deal for me.

Personally I would pay a reasonable price. I will not pay $130 pa.

                  • @CommuterPolluter: don't think the schools gives you the list of words you've learned either?

      • +21

For free for life, you can:

        1. Create a class at schools.duolingo.com/
        2. Choose one or more languages
        3. Invite yourself (and possibly family, friends,…) in these "courses"
        4. Enjoy the usual lessons for free without limit, without ads

However, for just over $3 per member per year. Maybe it's just better to support Duolingo.

I mean c'mon you're already scamming them out of a substantial amount of money by pretending to be in Egypt you really gonna grow a conscious now?

        • Can you migrate from a normal account and keep progress?

        • Tried this method but still getting ads?
Created a class -> added myself as a student to course -> but get ads on going super each lesson lol

          • +1

@bargainmethis: This workaround has now been patched out with the new AI Video chat plan that they released. RIP

            • @mmchak: what languages does that cover?

              • @bohn: I am learning Spanish, Portuguese and a bit of French

                • @mmchak: are you learning through other methods as well? how helpful have you found duo in progressing in those languages?

                  • @bohn: Duo is good for basic vocabulary and grammar but not sufficient to master a new language. I have got some Spanish friends with whom I practice

      • 616 and going strong!

Im bombarded with ads for premium on android yet cannot find a single ad on my browser. even with adblock off

    • see mobilism

    • Yes same, I never used the app, only the browser. Works flawlessly.

      • +1

much nicer to use on the desktop with being able to type. also I find the pc microphone far better for speaking exercises.

  • All right, start Klingon now, get ready for year 2325. Seriously tho it's a bit limited in Asian languages, would like to see Bisaya on there.

  • Does anyone know if I can renew my current super in the new currency to get it cheaper?

  • I signed up for an account to get this… Says that it's going to charge in egp in two weeks when my free trial ends.

    Fingers crossed

  • +1

Anyone else having trouble getting the Egypt prices? I’ve tried the method with multiple vpns with no luck. I have an existing account with no super. Using iPhone if that might be a contributing factor.

    • you not using the app to do this are you?

      • +1

Nope. Have tried various browsers on iPhone and on pc as well. Starting to think it’s the PIA VPN not working for it.

        • I'm sure this was working when the deal was first out but now isn't working for my friend, the page just times out on a few vpn's. I think duolingo updated the site as the turkey deal is now showing 50 usd as well for me.

  • +1

Duolingo seems helpful for learning a language but I don't think it would be a great substitute for taking language lessons. The is no native language explanations as to how the language works (and this would help tremendously with duolingo platform complexity and reducing implementation cost across languages). Having said that, I've never taken lessons, and perhaps there's some benefit to discovering how the grammar etc is structured rather than someone explaining it.

    • +1

I’ve never done lessons but I learn a lot more from textbooks and native speakers than Duolingo. It’s still fun and easy though, so not without its own value.

    • So, you're absolutely correct, but there is no need to focus on substituting lessons for Duolingo. If you're already taking lessons, it could be beneficial to also use the Duolingo app (certainly it won't hurt). And if you're not taking lessons, then you'll learn a hell of a lot more using Duolingo then you would by doing nothing!

I've tried a few different apps and textbooks, and I've googled language lessons a few times (let's be serious, I was never going to actually enrol in any), but I've actually maintained daily Duolingo lessons (~1400 day streak).

So yes, I would be way way better at my second language if I had spent 1400 days doing pretty much any learning other than Duolingo, but I have the capability to do that and I just haven't. So I am a big fan of Duolingo because of its ease of use - even though I give it maybe 2/10 for teaching efficicacy.

  • Hi guys, it seems like this no longer works. Followed the steps but keep timing out. Furthest I got was inputing my payment details.

Any suggestions to get it to work?

    • I updated my payment method just today prior to the payment being taken.

  • I just got charged $18 . It works, thank you :)

    • which vpn do you use to connect to egypt?

      • Worked for me using Nord VPN

      • I used urban vpn as op recommended. My first time using vpn and it was very slow

  • This just worked for me now.
Got the family year plan and got charged $17.79 AUD on my card.
Note when putting in your CC details, it defaults to Egypt, but your card, no doubt, is Australian, so change to Australia, you will still be charged in Egyptian pounds.. I believe, not that my bank mentions that anywhere.

I used "Private Internet Access" VPN, which is one of the cheapest ones available (I got it to stream the Euro from Italy and it seems to work fine for streaming, that's all I needed it for)

    • The receipt shows the amount in EGP, then added GST in AUD haha

  • When it comes time to renew, I assume it just auto renews at the same price?

  • ok stuck as cannot find where to subscribe/extend plan, do you have to wait until your current plan expires ?

  • GST - Australia 10% incl. on E£327.26 E£32.73
    A$1.01
    Total E£359.99
    😂

    $11.14AUD charged on card

  • Hi, just trying this out but i dont see the yearly option anymore either in AUD or Egypt. Have Superlingo removed this the yearly?

    • when you click on monthly option, it will show yearly at the time of payment

  • Does this still work? I have tried VPNs to Egypt, Turkey, India etc but pricing across all countries appears to have increased and are roughly equivalent to the AUD price.

    • still works, just did it today

  • This offer is still running. I signed up this week at EGP47.49 per month for the family option.

  • +1

I did this with Turkey just over a year ago and it worked, it recently auto renewed for Turkish price again - didn’t bother to change it as wasn’t worth the time/risk.

    • Hi, did it re renew at the old Turkish rates from last year? Mine says 499 TLR but if it try and sign a new one, it's 1199 TLR and the same shows on the turkish duolingo ozbargain link.

      • Yeah it was the original cheaper Turkish rates that it renewed with. Less than $30AUD once converted

        • Great. I might risk it then. Can I ask roughly when you were charged?

  • Worked well thanks for sharing!

  • My streak is over 500. Feel it is getting a slog to get through. Wish they would mix it up a bit. I hate those no mistake to earn daily point challenges.

Salty my monthly Quest badge can't be reduced from 50.

    • You can use Duolingo for the very beginning of learning to get a base, but I'd recommend switching to immersion learning very quickly. Keeps things fun, you want to be enjoying learning, not hating it.

  • Turns out i already had the super 12-month plan and never used it …. this deal must have been posted last year, guess this is a reminder to start learning again

  • -6

Shit way to learn a language. Get a textbook and get lessons from a native speaker.

  • Never seen someone get good from Duolingo, especially not in a reasonable amount of time vs effort.

If you want to learn a new language, sure you could use Duolingo for a month or two to gain a base but after that… You should srsly switch/take a look at immersion based learning programs (don't need to pay for them, learn what people do and mimic) it's much more effective, and keeps language learning funner in my opinion.

  • I can confirm this is still working by following the instructions provided and using UrbanVPN (free plugin for chrome). It costs AUD $19.27 after conversion.
I also encountered the ridiculous lag as others encountered, but turning off the anti-phishing, Anti-malware and Malicious Ads in the setting button and restarting the VPN resolved it for me.
My kids use the Duolingo Math and it works.
    Many thanks to OP.

    • Urban VPN doesn’t have Egypt as a location. Does anyone know of a free VPN service that has Egypt?

      • UrbanVPN does have egypt. That is what I used.
I installed the free plugin for chrome and it was selectable as the country.

        • Did you select via the plugin or the app on browser? I’m looking the app. First time vpn user here.

  • +1

Still working, got on Individual 12 months plan for $9.21 thanks to the 60% discount.

  • just got the family plan for $18 - thanks OP - I also got a refund from apple for $174.99 lol was 2 days into my australian family sub

  • A shame the 60% offer doesn't work on family plan. Signed up to family regardless.

  • Thanks OP. Amazing deal! Kids have been waiting the paid version for ages but couldn't justify the cost!
