Anyone wanting this fantastic series to watch over Xmas holidays. I have seen many of the episodes on SBS but these 26 episodes have been fully restored to reveal the most comprehensive coverage of WW2 footage you can find anywhere.I have bought the blueray version (still waiting on delivery) but noticed the dvd version is now heavily discounted.

Is this the widescreen or full screen 4:3 version?
In the reviews;
"The restoration has worked well making the picture sharper and widescreen with the benefit of 5.1 sound."Was about to ask, as well. The blu ray is cropped for widescreen (they went from cropping to 4:3 to cropping to 16:9 - what idiot thing will be next?!) so it's not worth getting imo. Is the DVD the same?
After reading some Amazon reviews, I'm starting to get the feeling that only the blu-ray is the cropped 16:9. I think the normal DVD version is the original 4:3 aspect
From what I have read they have cropped some of the blueray version and added extra footage in 16:9. The dvd version I believe is the original version just restored quality.
So really, DVD is the better one? NTSC or PAL is more true to the original source?
I think the butchering from 4:3 to 16:9 is for both DVD & Blue Ray. I think the confusion relates to the 2005 DVD release, which was the original 4:3. Amazon UK says the 2010 DVD is widescreen, and the 1-star reviews seem to confirm that.
If someone can correct me with some clear evidence that the 2010 DVD is 4:3, i'll buy it…
BTW, we've been here before.
hi freckle. butchers in war and perhaps a butcher editing in peace time. i recall reading comments along a similar line. I do think however that for someone like me who hasn't seen the series it is a good place to start, and a purchase i can share with friends that i know are also interested.
The bastards. Thanks for pointing that out - deal's off for me. Also a great reminder why it's a good idea to check those 1-star reviews even for 4.5-star rated products.
beauty! thanks!
great doco, loved it when it was on SBS, bargain price imo!!thanks op!
Will this work on standard australian dvd players or is a multi region one required?
Edit: It's Region 0 so not restricted, to answer my own question.
Thanks!
in the end went with world at war, 4 copies of borderlands 2, shrek, lion king and toy story box sets for $190. Thanks for the prompt with your post & the 2 sets of codes db1. you'll make a great db2 someday!
I'm happy that everyone can share in some of the great prices Zavvi have to offer. I never purchased many bluerays or dvd's in the past as they were so expensive in Australia but at these prices they are just too good to say no. Enjoy your collection cornbeef :)
The Hut/Zavvi can have some pretty good deals.
Thanks for posting db1. Pity about the widescreen issue - perhaps this is why the price is so good. I've noticed the older 4:3 2005 DVD release is very expensive…
i found the same thing when i looked into it last year freckle. the 4:3 was around $100 from recollection.
Austraya is a funny place. you go see a new movie for 15 bucks at the flix and then when it comes out on disc they try and sell it to you for 30 bucks. weird. parity peeps!
spoiler alert: we won.
Yes, but it wasn't at a bargain price.
Here is a 5% referal code to reduce the price further ZV16105068 (first time buyers only).
So using 28degrees credit card should cost around $23
