My family owns a 2020 Civic and the new 2024 7 seater CRV. Both are really solid cars. The only downside is they are just way overpriced with the competition with their silly fixed price model.

      • +2

+1. I'd be interested in a civic myself, but not at that price

    • +5

Good cars, but overpriced, and they don't offer a great range in Australia

      • +2

New Zealand gets Made in Japan Honda cars, yet Australia gets those from their Thailand factory.

        • -4

          Incorrect.

All Honda's currently for sale in Australia come from Japan.

          • +3

@SupeNintendoChalmers: Ok. Their plans must have changed since their announcement last year? https://www.whichcar.com.au/news/2024-honda-cr-v-australian-…

'….new Thai-built 2024 Honda CR-V will arrive in seven variants'

            • -1

@hardya: My bad, looks like change was fairly recently.

              • +1

@SupeNintendoChalmers: Honda have been over the years pushing manufacturing to Thailand to save on cost

A lot of the models are made in Thailand and has been for over a decade including the Civic, Jazz, City, Accord.

My dads 2010 Accord was made in Thailand and those models have been every since. The Accord Euro was made in Japan but they discontinued that here.

              • @SupeNintendoChalmers: @supernintendochalmers Not a problem, they dont exactly make it clear on their website; and the differing approaches between NZ and AU is illogical

  • +6

Would be fully sickkkk brahhhh if it was on the Civic Type R.

    • +4

      VTEC brmmmmbaaaaaaaaaa

    • I’ve been considering an FL5 after owning an FK8, they look so much better. Trouble is, the Nissan Z is another worthy contender.

      • +2

MX5. Cheap thrill and wont lose your license.

  • +12

I'd personally wait a few more months. The onslaught of Chinese made hybrids about to flood Australia is going to be very healthy for us consumers.

    • Yep, some other brands might even do 10 yrs warranty with free servicing + 0% finance, let's wait and see!

    • On a related note, saw some new Haval today, and the thing had the biggest front indicators I’ve ever seen. They were bigger than the flashing arrow on a road works sign

    • Only if approved by the gov. Already happened in US for a few years if I remember correctly.

  • Pretty sure in the US warranty periods are longer. One could argue that the cars are pretty much the same, driven using shitter fuel in the US and therefore in Australia we should get equal warranty periods. I know that Hyundai definitely have better warranty periods in the US.

    • +3

Isn't it Aus that has the worst fuel quality among all developed nations? So it's fair enough we get shorter warranty here.

      • +1

This is true. We have lower grade fuel here

  • -2

Is it me or are Honda cars ugly as fk

    • +31

      Just you

      • +4

        ok

        • Nah nah, I'm with you @alz, but it's kind of hard to find a good looking car. I mean, without spending a fortune. I kinda like the look of the Cupra's, and I'm really digging where Skoda are going, especially the wagon Enyaq, and I do like the new Honda line up more than the previous generation, tbh. What do you rate as a good looking car?

        • +1

I agree with you too @alz

They're certainly not nice looking cars

      • don't call him ugly.

    • +2

The same could be said about a lot of manufacturers.

    • +1

Yes, ugly and boring like Toyota, Mazda has the best design among Japanese car brands.

      • +5

They may not be boring but Mazda has some ugly cars. Many of their models aesthetically have not aged well either. All personal opinion but to me the older a mazda the tackier it looks.

        • +4

          I take that personally!

          • @RX7: It's okay, you're beautiful.

            • @lachhelix: Indeed. They nailed it with the RX7.

              • @Xizor: I love the the shape of the RX8 and that's a hill I'm willing to die on.

                The mechanicals, not so much.

      • +5

        Most Mazdas look crap

      • each to their own

    • +1

They are ugly since they pull out of F1 lol

  • +1

You got my upvote OP. I am in the car market for 2 weeks now, and as much as I want to say the $60k hybrid is a great option, its hard to not consider the Rav 4 which you could get from 48 mid 50K. Just the wait I guess if anyone is willing enough. Nevertheless, its a good deal that Honda!

    • Different equipment level. Unfortunately that Honda hybrid is not offered in lower trims.

When we bought our Civic, the only alternative option was a top trim Corolla X, or a Lexus. So the Honda was too far off.

      • +1

A RAV4 Cruiser Hybrid FWD has more equipment and D/A price is cheaper, but you need to be able to find one. Or pay substantial marked up.

        • Yes. Same reason we went with the civic and ditched the corolla X. At that time, no ETA for delivery what so ever.

    • +1

If you do go the Rav4 route. I found it wasn't too hard to find some dealers with stock. Hit up Motorscout by all means, but also just open google maps and search Toyota and check the individual stock on a bunch of dealer's websites. I was able to find a fair few hybrid Rav4s in stock across the greater sydney and within a few hours of sydney.

    • The Hybrid CRV looks miles better than the flaghip Rav4 model once you actually see the CRV Hybrid in person. The photos don't do it justice. It's a mix between a Tiguan R Line and BMW X5.

    • LOL

  • +3

Honda's future in Australia is getting dimmer by the year, so keep that in mind for anyone who's considering taking this up. Otherwise they're generally good cars. Nowhere near as brilliant as they used to be, but good overall.

  • +7

Have been in the market for a ZRV/HRV and have looked a few times in person but just cant pull the trigger.
5 years was compelling at first, then the promotion went to 7, and now 8.

However service centers are no longer located at the dealership (check your city). Sydney support if not exactly convenient.

All the Honda offerings also have a 4 star Euro ancap safety rating which is disappointing.
Lack of Hybrid AWD is also a shame.

Their decision to kill off the Odessey and Jazz locally still makes no sense.

The Honda you know and love no longer exists…

    • +10

Honda will be gone from the Australia market by 2030. I can guarantee you that.

    • Not to mention they dont offer a sporty cheap Honda like they used to (Civic Vti/ Vtir, Integra Vtir, CRX, Prelude, etc. ).

      • How old are you? If you think Honda were "cheap" you"re delusional.

The prelude was $50k 25 years ago. Imagine paying half a house in the outer suburbs on a Honda.

        • +2

          Im 40 plus years old.

My older brother got his Integra Type R it was $37k After negotiating with the dealer during a sale back around 2003 off memory.

The integra Type R was mid 40k new RRP at the time but no one pays retail unless they have money to blow.

For the Prelude I don't ever recall seeing it that expensive but I had a friend that got one brand new for md30s as well for the last model Vti-R

normal Civics EG/EKs were around the high to low 20s and a more high model like the Vti / VTi-R was around the mid to high 20s if you shopped around.

Your comment about 50k for a house in the out surburbs, I dont know what suburb you're referring to but in Sydney my mother got her house around 25-30 years ago and it was about $180k for 580 square meter home in Blacktown so I am very intrigue where you would get a house for 100k back around that period unless you're talking about living in the sticks.

I've been a big Honda fan since high school and have owned many Honda's so it's not like I am just spurting this crap out of my arse so i am far from delusional.

          • @SpeedRunnerLink: I still recall DC2s for mid to high 30s… Houses weren't cheap back then… Prob the car is 1/10-1/15 of what lower end of the market costs.

Comparing to housing and income, cars are cheap these days.

            • @[Deactivated]: I dont disagree with what you're saying but my main point is that Honda don't offer a lower priced range sporty car.

Its just the one model Civic Type R which starts around $70kish.

I know its never going to be 30-40k like 20 years ago but maybe around the 50k mark that isn't as hardcore as the Type R but has some decent punch compared to the base model.

              • @SpeedRunnerLink: Yea. Not sure what's happened since covid.

Toyota has filled the cheap and cheerful gap with their Yaris/Corolla GR…

Makes the type r look inexpensive when a VW GTI @$60k is being "discounted".

                • @[Deactivated]: Which VW Gti are you referring to as the Golf Gti starts around mid $50kish drive away I am sure you can shop around or get it on sale for high 40s

Id rather get that than a hybrid Civic if I was after a hatch between those two

    • Smartest take in the whole thread, thank you.

    • True. From experience, it's much more of a headache to get spare OEM Honda parts nowadays.

      • Recently replaced a whole mirror unit. Honda kept stock (painted). One week from to arrival from Melb to Sydney.

Not sure if all parts are kept locally.

        • What model and year vehicle?

But it's not just stock availability I'm referring to, it's the closing down of parts places near me. It's also the fact that the remaining ones near me don't even answer website or email quote requests anymore. You gotta rock up to get anything done.

          • @sildosaggins: 2023 civic ehev

            • @[Deactivated]: Makes sense, it's only last year's model. Why did you need to replace the whole mirror?

              • +1

@sildosaggins: Human error, someone clipped it. Modern day consumerism. Can't just buy the actual broken part - hinge clamping onto the actuator. Could have replaced it myself and then repaint the housing. Well, a few clips broken too, need to find a way to retro fit so it's not loose.

  • Kayak compatible?

  • +1

Waiting for 10 years warranty for the Type-R. It's a Honda, surely it wouldn't cost them anything to do this.

  • +3

Honda has checked out from the car market. Not sure what’s going on.

They filled that gap of cool and solid Japanese cars and now we have nothing in that range.

  • +1

    $60k for a CRV. What a time

    • 5 seater :)

    • +3

      60-80k for Hyundai's and Kia's… What a time indeed

  • BOLD OF HONDA

    Good deal

  • Same company that charges 50k for a Civic

    • 55

    • Which range? It was ~30k for the basic when I asked in late 2021.

  • +3

We've an 8yo Honda Civic that's had 4 separate, very costly, aircon related issues (3 occurred in our ownership - condensers and compressors).
Class action lawsuit in the US that helps customers over there, but nothing similar here, so customers are lefting holding the bag.

And they're replacing failed components with the exact same bad components as well, not even revised/upgraded.

Never touching a Honda again after this, even if they've a long warranty.

    From their warranty doco…

    1. Deterioration of any item due to use and exposure, unless due to a defect in workmanship or material

Deterioration due to use …. maybe that's a common usage of this statement, but surely that's a bit of weasel wording that could be used against you?

Like, in my example, could they say you've overused the aircon and the failure is a consequence of that?
Honda US have accepted my aircon scenario as a defect, but Honda AU haven't.

    • +2

ACL is your friend. Don't think Honda is any better in dealing with warranty than others.

      Do a xCAT case.

    • Damn, the aircon in my 7 year old Civic is busted. How much were the repairs for you?

      • +1

I've had issues with my aircon. Have to re-gass it every two years due to a leak they can't find.

      • +1

Both the compressor and condenser were roughly $1200-$1500 for the part alone, iirc.
We got the first compressor issue done under warranty.
Then shortly after that, the condenser went.
Then about 18 months after that, the compressor went again.

Each time, they just replaced it with the same, defective part.
So it'll definitely go again, but we're hoping to have sold it before that.

There's a huge deal about this in the US and it's all repaired (begrudgingly) under warranty, because they recognise the parts are garbage.

    • +1

Even when the air con is working it's rather average. I drove a Honda City on a summers day. The air con doesn't really work sitting in traffic, you need to be moving so that engine is revving higher. Even then Toyota air con is miles better.

  • HRV is 4 seater :)

  • V-TECH YO!

Please return back Odyssey for AU market!

    • +7

And the JAZZ… S2000 too! Well, they can call the new one S3000 or S2500… Happy to take it.

    • And they will be made in China.

      • +1

        A CHonda?

        • Hybrid odyssey were exported from Guangqi Honda to Japan from last year.

  • +2

I owned a new Honda quite a while ago, and every warranty repair was a bit of a battle.
In the end, they did do the repairs under warranty but only after I pushed back on paying.
I hope the 'premium' dealers are better with warranties on the new fixed-price 'premium' model.
Warranty repairs included CV joint boots torn and the driver's window mechanism kept jamming.

  • +7

I want to buy a brand new Honda Jazz.

    • +3

One of the best car I have owned

      • +3

Can fit a house in there… its exterior s deceptively small.

      • I missed mine too

    • +6

      Jazz is a great car

      • Makes one wonder why market is losing market share. They just dont import what the market is asking for.

  • I'm pretty sure at 60k a model ay is a better buy… Even though it will depreciate faster ..
