    Damn that’s a good price

      It's meh.
The camera and display is good, but still lots of reports about bugs and the overall quality. But it's definitely a drawback when it comes to the performance, heat, and battery life. Also because you don't have a microSD card, you need to pay a couple extra hundred dollars for Cloud Storage, or buy a larger storage model. It makes zero sense paying above AUD $900 flagship prices, basically in the luxury price segment, and having to fiddle around with files due to only having 256GB or less capacity.

As far as deals go, the notable ones:
      1- (19 Oct) $0 + $400 for Harvey Norman Plan
      2- (12 Oct) $900 using the -$1k JB Plan
      3- (16 Nov) $1300 using the extra $300 discount

….and those were 7-8 months ago, towards the start of this phone's life. Now we are getting past its midlife and close to its end, and the deals are worse.

This deal would've made sense if it was the original RRP but halved. So the Pixel 8 Pro ($1900) should be around $900 for the 512GB for a deal. Anything above $1000 and you're getting a little ripped off. If anyone is going overseas, they have better deals than we do.

Or just wait a little longer, and get the Pixel 9 Ultra in early November instead. It might come with little/no upgrades (6 Pro vs 7 pro), or it might come with something between notable (SMG 4nm) to (SMG 3nm) substantial upgrade to fix it's weaknesses (performance, heat, efficiency).

      • Wasn't the HN deal $828 ?

I don't understand the fascination with needing such large storage capacity on a mobile phone.

Why do you need a local copy of whatever data with you at all times?

        • People still talk about the microSD like it hasn't been the norm for years now not to have one in the top segment.

Videos take up a lot of space and if you message a lot with videos and whatnot then caches for app can be huge. It's nice not to worry about moving crap around constantly and why I recommend people go with the highest storage limit they could afford.

        • Is 256gb considered large? 128gb is barely serviceable.

        • +1

          Huge library of audiobooks

      • Was this written by a Samsung rep? Who doesn't have cloud storage anyway? If you're keeping all your files on only physical media then good luck to you. 200gb with google is only $43 a year, boohoo.

I moved from the s22Ultra and it's great. Battery life is surprisingly good. Have only seen one app glitch for an app that is solely for Koreans in Korea where they don't sell Pixels (officially). Software is excellent, some nice features.

Definitely not as fully featured as the 24 Ultra likely is, but for the price I think it's hard to beat.

This is another n = 1 review though.

        • -3

Cloud storage is unreliable, especially from google

        • 200gb won't last that long with 4k videos and high resolution photos. And Google drive is expensive! Next jump up is a massive price jump, at almost 2.5 times the price of 200gb. So yea, boohoo for people that rely on that.

      • exactly my experience. the camera was amazing but the software bugs dragged it down

    • End of financial is only 2 months to go, there will be so many better deals than this.

  • apart from camera, is this phone any good compare to s23/24 ultra?

    • +4

      The price

    • +4

If S23/24 ultra same price, don’t even bother with this. S23/24 ultra has better processor, battery and less clunky at times.

However, the $300-500 price difference versus the Samsung EDU $1400 S24 Ultra 256GB price may be worth.

I’d still go for the Samsung but my parents are stubborn and I need something for Mother’s Day.

      • +1

S23/24 ultra has better processor, battery and less clunky at times.

At times? Samsung's UI and support are the worst of any of the major phone manufacturers.

        • +1

Google support isn't really a highlight either lol.

Unfortunately pixel owners are sort of beta testers for features that end up on other phones anyway.

          • @Circly:

Google support isn't really a highlight either

            It's better than Samsung.

Unfortunately pixel owners are sort of beta testers for features that end up on other phones anyway.

All software developers work the same way, some are just better and quicker at it. Google are definitely better and quicker at releases than Samsung.

        • Compare Google’s service with Samsung. When you say smartphone, you’re dragging Apple along in a place where it’s not desirable to be compared.

          • @nepalicurryinahurry:

Compare Google’s service with Samsung. When you say smartphone, you’re dragging Apple along in a place where it’s not desirable to be compared.

Why not? Comparing should be what we as consumer do to ensure good value.
For support (meaning updates, patches, and warranty service repairs etc, Apple wins, Google is second, Samsung is last. IMO

        • I never had issues with Samsung UI since they launched One UI .

and I had worst experience with pixel. it never worked and always lags.

        • Samsung's UI is the only major android that has fully skinable theme engine still. If you value customisation of UI, the Samsung is the easy choice. If you don't support themes/customisation, then yes Google.

    • +3

I own both Pixel 8 Pro 512G and S24U 512G. Pixel's battery is terrible, it's from 100% at 8 am to 30% at 3 pm whereas S24U lasts till 7-8 pm at 30%. Apart from that I prefer to Pixel 8 Pro.

      • Yep, the only thing that sucks with it, is battery.

        • +1

I weirdly have no real issues with battery. I lose about 10% per hour using it on and off, streaming music and on 5g. Wifi it'll go and go. I rarely end the day at 10.30pm with less than 30 or 40%. Is it as good as the ultra in battery, no, but I've never had it drop below 20% in 17 or 18 hours off charge.

          • @Charlsie: What's your SOT?

Also are you mostly on wifi or 4G/5G?

Battery is good on wifi but horrible on the modem.

            • @Circly: Currently at 43%. 4 hours 4 hours 45 SOT. It definitely uses more battery on 5g but I was on 5g for 3 hours today, streaming music for half that. I generally get between 5 and 7 hours though depending on what I'm doing. I'm always on 5g if I'm on data.

          • @Charlsie: I think the battery life of Pixel heavily depends on how you use it, and ultra is relatively stable. My wife is using Pixel 8 Pro now and still get 30-40% battery left before bed…

        • Yeah mine is very ordinary using 5G. Wifi and 4G it's alot better

        • +2

Had mine few months now. Haven't really had an issue with battery. 10.30 now and down to 93%. Unplugged since 6.30. Been mixed on 5g and wifi. Do notice when playing a game it draws fair bit. Quick to charge though. End of day usually around 30-40% and I use my phone quite a bit.

    • +1

      Only price and camera.

But s23/s24 camera is also great.

This compares badly in battery and chip performance.

    • Definitely not. Ultra is in a league of its own where it’s yet to be challenged by any other Android smartphones.

You’d buy a Pixel for its stock Android and camera. That’s it. Hardcore Pixel fans can say anything but it’s a mid range phone with stock Android and great cameras.

Ultra defeats Pixel Pro in display, service support, SoC, performance, network reception, amount of bugs, thermal performance and many more.

I still cannot forget my experience with the P7. Hated it and got rid of it to never return to a Pixel series until it gets rid of Tensor chip.

  • Is this a side-grade from my S21U?

  • Noice

  • Will it work for past Boost customers?

  • I was an Android lover but been over with Apple the past few years.

Can anyone share some real-world feedback on if it's worth moving back to Samsung/Google - my main goal is the best camera quality.

    Thanks in advance.

    • -1

If your main priority is camera quality, then both Samsung and Google offer excellent options:

      • Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is currently considered the best camera phone overall, with powerful hardware and AI-powered features for stunning photos and videos.
      • Google Pixel 8 Pro excels in image processing, delivering exceptional detail and clarity, especially in low-light conditions.
    • -3

my main goal is the best camera quality.

Have you tried an actual camera? You can get a second hand full frame dslr for this sort of money and it will last ten times longer and take much, much better photos.

      • +5

But it won't fit in your pocket and be a phone. I say this as someone with an expensive full frame DSLR and lenses that still finds it annoying to haul the thing around

        • Back in the day when phone cameras were still pretty average I used to carry a m43 and pancake lens as my compromise. Haven't really kept abreast but it sounds like m43 is a dying format now

          • @pingponged: Yeh I used to also carry a Canon PowerShot S120 for the same reason. Some of my best photos are from that camera. Way better than a phone cam and fits in my pocket. Unfortunately the stupid control wheel on it died otherwise I'd still be taking it out with me.

      • +1

I bought one years ago and to be honest we never use it - whipping out the phone is just easier as you've got it on you 99% of the time.

      • A DSLR? A mirrorless would be a much better (although still not good) suggestion

    • +1

I'm in the same boat.. I went to jb hi-fi.. turned on all the highest settings on all 3 phones.. pixel 8 pro, Samsung s24 ultra and the iPhone 15 pro Max (I think)..

And I like to capture short videos rather than just pictures..

Pixel ..move the camera a bit and U start seeing stuttering.. very weird.. happens in ALL pixels pretty much

Samsung s24.. very good video.. but when U zoom, it switched lenses or something.. and then focussed.. there was a very visible jump in the frames.. didn't look nice at all. And overall such a big slab of a phone..

      iPhone.. like butter.. shakes, zoom.
      Nothing affected the clarity ..

      • +1

All Android phones are bad at video recording and drop frames. Samsung is bad, too, and there are multiple forum threads on this. This has been the case since forever and it seems they just can't fix it, so the root cause must be Android OS itself.

        • Huawei phones seem to do it well from my experience, so it can't be Android itself that's the issue.

      • +2

Just wait until you compare the keyboards though haha, iPhone is the worst. Coming from 10 years on android to iOS and 2 years later I still struggle with the stupid keyboard.

        • OMG me too

I switch between them and iphone keyboard sucks

        • I'm about to switch to iOS… You can't install GBoard on iOS I presume? :(

          Edit: oh wait.. you can?

          • @CVonC: You can, but it’s not the same at all.

            • @onlinepred: Can you please elaborate what's different to the usage?

              • +1

@CVonC: Autocorrect is worse than even the iOS keyboard, you can't customise it like putting number row on top as iOS cripples keyboard customisation. If you then go to certain areas like password entry or iOS search, it will switch to standard keyboard randomly.

                • @onlinepred: Auto correct I can deal with cos I usually swipe to type anyway. But number row on top is a god send. Just like long pressing for symbols :/

                  • @CVonC: Swipe uses autocorrect. Swipe is the way I type. It's so bad that a sentence will rarely be better than 50% correct.

                    • @onlinepred: Eeek.. dreading it even more now! But js there even an advantage to using GBoard then?

                      • +1

@CVonC: No. It even uses Siri for voice to text. Typing is a terrible experience on iOS. Going on almost three years with it now, it’s only gotten worse. If nothing changes it will be my last iPhone.

    • +1

my main goal is the best camera quality
You're probably after the Xiaomi 14 Ultra.

    • +1

Pixel 8 pro takes better photos than iPhone 14

    • -1

iPhone is the best for video according to reviews. It also takes excellent photos, on par with Samsung and Google.

  • That is an interesting price. If you have a Telstra ID the 8 Pro costs less than either the 7 Pro or the 6 Pro!
Or, to put it another way… Optus currently has a $500 discount on the Samsung Galaxy 23 FE that takes it down to $999 as well!

    • +2

Would pick the 8 Pro over the 23 FE any day.

      Unless it was a 23U

      • Yep, 100% agree. No contest

    • Optus currently has a $500 discount on the Samsung Galaxy 23 FE that takes it down to $999 as well!

S23 FE is $599 (with a $30 plan) from Amaysim right now. Really good deal imo.

      • Amaysim also has the Pixel 7 at $699 and the 8 at $749, both good offers atm

  • -7

Trust me, don't buy phones from Google, huge mistake.

    • +6

Why would I trust any random person in an internet comments section purely at face value?

      • +6

Because they said "trust me", duh

  • +2

Clearing stock for 9 later this year, hopefully they fix the battery life.

    • +1

Only if they used the Snapdragon processes, the battery would have been great. Tensor might be another hit and miss, but we will see.

      • If they put as much effort into efficiency as they did their AI features, it'd probably a lot better.

        • That is also true.

    • -1

Battery saver mode helps a lot as it turns off always on screen

      • The old "turn off core features to make battery life usable"

        • I usually don't have my screen on all the time, especially when it's in my pocket

      • Or just turn off AOD?

  • Is it really worth getting anything more than 128gb for standard phone use?

    • +1

depends how many photos/video you take. i have kids and can go through 150gb a year

    • +1

depends on the user but with amount of apps these days better to 256gb and then no need to worry about space

especially useful if you are not subscribe to Google One and choose to download your videos and photos manually to clear space

      • Thanks. I have Google One and on my old Pixel 6Pro I have used 87 of 128GB. I guess apps and things are only getting bigger though, but not sure whether the newer phones would natively use more space than older phones regardless of apps.

    • +1

256gb minimum for me. Apps and camera start chewing so much space.

    • +1

If you're paying $1000 or more, you should realistically be expecting to get 1TB of storage. You are now out of the flagship phone prices, and now into a new Luxury Phone price segment.

Here is a fine example of corporate greed. Google wants to charge people $1600 for a mere 128GB of storage. These "huge" discounts only dial things down from crazy town, we still aren't in the ballpark of fair. If you want that, you're going to have to go with a Chinese Brand, or an ex-flagship phone particularly from the used market.

    • No

    • +2

Actually $100 for the extra storage is not bad. Photos are 50 mB raw

  • Chat is this a decent deal?

    • YES

    • Not as good as the Optus hack but it's pretty close as no plan required

  • +2

It's not letting me purchase without a plan? How do I purchase outright?

    • +1

Same. I have a plan and only letting me go on a monthly payment plan.

      • Logged in and can't see an outright option.

    • Purchase via Telstra Plus, there are outright, 12 and 24 month repayment options also.

  • I wonder if they are going to do Pixel Pro 9 at the $8XX price like that Optus early termination plan at HN they did last year which sold out fast

    • +2

Haha i have a feeling they won't be doing that again. That promo got cut very short this time round.

This is a great price. I love the phone.
