I believe you still can use it without subcription.
Yeah can use without sub but cannot view older alerts. Got one and won't be renewing next year. Also quite big delay from rings to when opening in app so usually miss the "2way talk". Not sure where their servers located. Decent quality though and not too many false alarms. Package alert quite handy as too much ordering lol
2nd gen doesn't have replaceable battery. i would wait for 4th gen

Once upon a time I had one… hated having to charge the battery.
Didn’t like the Alexa integration, didn’t like the subscription service to get decent functionality.
