The fall of GoPro is one of the most saddest things ive ever seen

    • In quality or pice?

      • +5

Everything, Price, Quality, Market Share and most notably innovation

        • At what price point does this camera become a good deal?

          • +5

@BrainSeeker: Depends, do you like to gamble?

Your goPro will randomly shutdown while recording.
Your goPro will show its recording and blinking but write nothing to the SD card.
Your goPro will decide it doesn't like Tuesdays and just stop booting and give you a red light of death instead.

            • @xavster: That's not true, you may have had a faulty one, it does happen…

I had issues with an 8, but other than that they've been pretty good.. I've recorded many hundreds of hours trouble free on the 1, 2, 5, 10, 11, 12, in often quite extreme conditions…

              • @FLICKIT: I had 8 and it was perfect, until overheated. Those random shutdowns are because of fake batteries or damage.

There's not a tonne of innovation that you can do in action cameras, and if you actually objectively look at the features and video quality, it's not as if GoPro stacks up poorly to the competition.

There are basically only three major action camera manufacturers now - GoPro, DJI and Insta360. All of the comparisons I've seen (e.g. see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWF0hcDTx80) show that they are all pretty much dead even, with each having some niche features over the others.

Obviously the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 has the best low-light performance from its larger sensor, but it's also more expensive.

As the initial dominant player, GoPro's market share only had one way to go (i.e. down). Its stock was always overhyped beyond what it was (a small consumer electronics manufacturer), so its valuation is just correcting for the hype.

          • @p1 ama: It comes down to fine details when choosing between them all now…

Gopro shit me, their support is shocking, I have complaints, but their cameras still suit my needs best, great video straight off the camera at a low bitrate…

Edit: to add, I wouldn't buy one of these cameras with a fixed, non changeable battery, they're a throw-away item

ikr… the dji action cameras crap all over gopro these days

      • and you've used both a fair bit I assume?

I had the hero 11 and it kept overheating especially in summer, so a lot of the vids were cut halfway because it would shut down. Changed to the DJI action 4 and havent had an issue since. IMO the DJI was also better for evening and early morning shots.

          • @Qmar: just out of interest, how were you using the 11, what were you doing with it for it to overheat?…

I recorded the whole Canning Stock route on a 10 in 30+C full sun temps with zero issues in 2023, and a double crossing of the Simpson Desert, and Cape York last year with a 12, and I had zero overheating issues… I have never actually had my 10, 11, or 12 over heat, yeh they get warm, but they dont shut down…

My main complaint with the DJI's is the grainy quality at double the bitrate of the Gopro's, I'd have to buy a stack more memory cards if I wanted to do what I do with a DJI…

@FLICKIT: I was mainly using it for downhill biking. 10 doesnt have that issue. I had a 10 and loved it too, which is why I upgraded to a 11. When I started having the issues, I looked online and it seemed it was a very common issue with the 11.

@Qmar: Interesting, I have an 11, I use it a fair bit but I haven't done anything noteworthy extreme with it, it's never been an issue though…

@FLICKIT: I am a bit disappointed with GoPro as well. My Hero 8 Black was dead after 30 minutes of 4K recording under the shade in Cairns. I contacted GoPro customer service and they said they would not be able to repair it, but they could offer me a coupon (maybe 10 -15% off ?) through email to purchase a new one. Yes I received their email but there was no coupon in it.

@applebernie: The 8 was the only one that gave me grief with random lockups and shutdowns, I suspect it was due to the old under-powered GP1 CPU and they were trying to do too much with it in 2019… The 8 was the first camera with the new/better/modern stabilization and I think it was just too much for the old-school cpu…

In 2019 Gopro-8 was the only real action camera on the market and back then they were trying to push the limits… They introduced the much better GP2 cpu the following year which seemed to fix the lack of power issue, but that also introduced the heat issues for people that were using it as a stationary vlogging camera rather than as an action camera…

              • @applebernie: Shade still may have +45 degrees. My 8 also worked like 30-40 minutes in 4k. But it was an old and cheap CPU. 11 lasts double of that in certain conditions, but pricier as well.

    • when you manufacture in China and don't adequately protect your IP

    lol gopro

Without innovation, GoPro will eventually end up like Kodak.

    Pretty funny story actually.

Dji founder approaches gopro to pitch drone-camera partnership, gopro laughs him out of the room, saying they don’t need him.

DJI founder makes it his mission to wipe the floor with gopro. First by “leaking” the original mavic designs and specs a few hours before gopro unveils their infamous “karma” drone (how ironic) at a media event.

DJI then goes all-in on simultaneously copying, bettering and undercutting gopro’s flagship action cameras, while developing even more products like the osmo pocket to destroy gopro.

This probably would have happened eventually anyway, but i’ll bet it was hugely satisfying for DJI to humiliate gopro as they did.

Just to let people know, this is the budget version that was released alongside the Hero 13. IMO not worth at this price.
