  • +1

Ok, go to 4 stores, then at the 4th store, get a M.2 + PCIe card adapter, $20 for 1TB? I don't know if this could be configured as a single drive, but if so, cheap storage.

    It's cheap storage anyway.

  • Just picked one up, ty OP

    PC SN740 NVMe WD 256GB

Apparently there was 2 512GBs in the batch they received, so congrats to whoever got that.

  • +5

Plenty of stock in Auburn. Fyi they're pretty relaxed on the one per customer if you're nice

    • About heading there cheers

    • How many did they give you?

Wondering if it's worth a detour to Centre Com Richmond on the way to the city today…would love to get two!

      • +1

I just got 2, he hinted not to stretch it hahah

    • Which model did they have?

  • +1

Anyone know if they still have stocks for Bundoora one?

    • +2

      OP please update the post.

I went to Bundoora and got rejected, as they are a franchise…

      • +1

Damn, was about to go. Thanks for the info.

      • Thanks mate. Saves me a drive.

      • +1

Even a decade ago Bundoora never had stock of a single thing.

  • Stock at Richmond, Vic. Picked up an SN740. Apparently the others were Adata.

  • Thanks OP

  • +1

Just picked up two at Richmond by asking very nicely. They look like oem drives stripped from laptops

    • So they are 2nd hand not brand new?

      • +10

        I don't know, and for $5, I don't care.

      • +1

        Likely ssd upgrade

  • -2

Man, I want to bulk buy these things, I've been getting a few opportunities of picking up fleets of optiplexes and thinkcenters, and they usually have the SSD removed and destroyed.

  • Got one for 5 bucks, thanks OP.

  • Thanks OP, picked one up at Sunshine. Limit one per customer. It's an OEM Opal 256GB from Micron

  • Thanks, bought from Richmond, brand is SSSTC

  • Thanks OP. Got 1. Tried for 2 but they didnt budge :(

    I got the WD Sn740.

    • +1

      Which store?

  • just grab one, it's kioxia
    not sure good enough

  • Got one WD PC SN740

  • I got a Kioxia BG5 KBG50ZNS256G (former Toshiba, SED KBG50ZNS256G)

    • mine ZNV not sure any difference from it

  • Got one, no anti static bag. Just the bare drive

  • +1

got 2 from frankston store, they still got heaps left
    its Samsung PM991

    • Ha ha, I was just there too and also got a pair of PM991's

  • +1

Just got one from Richmond, they only have 6 left at the time. Received a Micron. PCIe 4.0, manufactured July 2022: https://au.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Micron/MTFDKBA256TFK-1BC…

Apparently they come from brand new laptops that they have upgraded, and they have mountains of 256GB OEM SSDs in their warehouse, so they are clearing it out. So not exactly brand new, but shouldn’t be used much if at all.

  • +2

So many left at Clayton, VIC, only 1 per person but they have about 3000, all dumped in a box, 75 people in a queue.

    • How do you know they have 3000 left. Wonder if it's worth the drive there.

      • +1

I drove there from Berwick, I rang beforehand and the guy on the phone said that they haven't finished the first box yet… So they have more I assume.

I got there and when I was checking out, I just asked them if it was the first box still, I got a yep.

  • Got a Kioxia PCIE4 KBG50ZNV256G Not bad Now to format as exFAT and use in one of many Gen2 NVMW cases to backup Phone directly
went to format it and it is already formatted as a Windows Drive

  • +1

not worth it unless you live nearby + 75 people in the line? fk that really must have no life to waste that much time over $20

    • +1

      Not really

Based on the comments above, this sounds like the first ever Centre Com deal where they actually put some effort into the back-end organisation and have a proper amount of stock

OEM 256GB Samsung/Kioxia/Micron drives shucked from new laptops are a good choice for RPI, mini PC and second hand laptops

      • +3

Yeah but you can get a 256 M2 anywhere for $20-25.

Whilst the drive can be useful it's not worth waiting for a 70 person queue.

        • +3

thank you! least someone gets it

If lining up in a 70 person queue on the weekend to save $15-20 is a good use of your time - I say get some hobbies

    • +5

Took me no more than 30 seconds to get two of them at Centre Com Richmond.

Don't be so salty, it's bad for your blood pressure.

      • nice! im going to use that one

    • +1

Depends on which state you are in, you could feel differently about this.

I can understand where you are coming from since there is only 1 store in NSW. Used to live in NSW for a while. There were just more soup nazi type computer stores in NSW. I was never happy about visiting the initial Auburn MSY store, but I later realised that store was still better than the other MSY store (Ultimo).

Getting one of these in a VIC store is likely a more pleasant experience (except maybe one store, which could be quite busy at times). Therefore, it might be hard for some people in Victoria to understand why NSW people dislike Centrecom so much. Richmod store staff tried to pick one for me (he picked AData), but he let me pick the one I want. For $5, he was very helpful. However, my mate went to another store, the staff just said to him, it's $5, don't ask, just take it (or leave it).

      • wow i had no idea. Ive been going to msy for over 20years and never heard these PC shops described as a pleasant experience. Literally seen the asian customer service knts yell at customers for not knowing specs.

        VIC sounds nice

        • It depends. You could get a staff that's really nice (even quite willing to negotiate on price) but could also get one that's mean. However, Centrecom's warranty service is still subpar. However, Centrecom used to have Boxing Day sales (people queued up at midnight), dirt cheap clearance items in the past. There was also $10 240GB SATA SSD at Clayton store last year. That one was a bit dodgy though, they had 2 batches, only one batch could be sold for $10 so the staff would scan multiple WD Green SSDs until one scans correctly.

          • @netsurfer: this is why i have jumped on Amazon and absolutely love it. 1 day delivered to my house and returns no questions asked.

            • @ChatCPT: Only if you have Prime. If you don't, Amazon does treat you like a second class citizen (process your orders when they feel like it).

              • @netsurfer: the $50/year prime membership is one of my best purchases ever!
and thanks to ozbargain too I am buying powerbanks and all sorts with 1 day delivery

Even right now the cheapest 1tb nvme I could find is on prime and I can order it from my toilet

                • @ChatCPT: For rich people like you (you can afford to live in Sydney, to me that = rich), Auburn isn't a place you would normally visit. Even when I was working in Sydney, I only visited / drove to Auburn to buy cheap computer items. So, yes, spend / waste time driving to Auburn to buy a second hand small SSD for $5… doesn't make sense for rich people obviously 😃

The staff who served me at Richmond store was really nice and let me had a look at all the models in store at the time. My mate got WD SN740 so I picked Micron 2450. These are all second hand SSDs.

    WD SN740 Micron 2450 Samsung PM991a Kioxia BG5 Adata ???
Powered on 16 times 15 times
Hours used 1 hour 2 hours

    # Samsung P991a and Kioxia BG5 speed results based on spec sheets (didn't manage to get them).

Even for SN740, at 256GB, it still behaves more like a PCIe gen 3 x4 SSD. I guess technically, you could use it to trick PS5. Also, SN740 has components made in China (the NAND is made in Malaysia and the sticker has made in Malaysia printed).

    • +1

Some pretty good specs there. I've seen ALL of these SSDs in hundreds of HP desktops and most often it's the Samsung.

    • +1

Thank you for the awesome data @netsurfer

    ANY in sunshine store ?

    • Isn't that store the head office? Guessing that store should have plenty of them?

      • oh is that so

    • I got two from Sunshine as soon as they opened at 10am.

      • Which ones did you get?

  • Tons left at Auburn NSW

Every customer there basically only there for the SSDs atm.

    Received 2x PM991a

    • Were they nice to you?
      Did they let you pick?

  • Got 2 from Frankston, just me, guy from the counter came round to be my buddy

  • I was just in cc and the guy offered me a 256GB ssd for $5. I declined because I have no need of it. It’s cheap as heck but better to leave it for others in need.

  • Decent promo - picked one up as extra flash storage is always useful(troubleshooting, extra storage, portable, etc).

I happened to be in the area so went into the Auburn store. Not too busy - the person next to me was also buying a SSD and had Ozbargain open on their phone.

First time going to their store which has a decent number of items on display.

    • Which one did you get? Did you get to choose?

      • PM991

  • I just picked up one. It doesn't come with a screw or thermal pad. Do I need the thermal pad? I was thinking to plug it into my desktop.

    • No need for a thermal pad. Most of the time your motherboard will come with a screw.

  • Is this still continue tomorrow (Sunday) ?
Edit: this whole weekend- while stock last ..

    • Yes, one staff in a store was telling a customer to come back tomorrow to get another one (to overcome the 1 per person rule). However, that person bought other items so I think the staff ended up let him buy 2 anyway.

You do need to visit a store that has a lot of them in stock though. I reckon Richmond store has sold out their stock.

    • +1

Only saw about 8 people waiting outside as Auburn store opened, 6 of them were there for the SSD lol.

Got one from Sunshine, VIC. Just bare drive from existing systems. Mine still has windows on it.
    Model: Micron MTFDKBA256TFK
    Total Host Reads: 54GB
    Total Host Write: 87GB
    Power On Count: 13 count
    Power On Hours: 4 hours

Use diskpart tool to clean the drive to gain couple of more GBs from windows reserved partitions.

    • That one is Micron 2450. I did a quick test (see above)

    • Wow, let’s hope no sensitive government data on it… we don’t another optus-gate turn into centrecom-gate…

      • Sensitive / personal data: no
Bloatware from PC/laptop makers (i.e. Lenovo): yes, plenty.

  • Got a PM991a which was originally in a HP system
    Crystaldiskmark Run

    • Interesting, max write is higher than the specs. Can't update my table anymore.

  • Anyone got any deals on cheap enclosures?
