      • I have not - like I said I'm not very hardware savvy. What's the difference between this and a mini PC?

        • -1

mini pcs can handle less computational task. a little cheaper and more energy efficient. this is great for office use. and can upgrade. mini pcs are less modular and less upgradability

    • +1

You may also consider a cheap laptop as she may appreciate the portability:

      https://www.australiancomputertraders.com.au/lenovo-thinkpad…

      • Thanks for the suggestion - we were actually originally thinking a laptop and it was a close call, but we decided a desktop might work out better for her for now!

    • +1

She'll love it and you will too. I bought the 7060 and can't believe how well it works out of the box. no driver issues etc. fast, quick to boot (relatively speaking) These things seem rock solid which is good for you as I'm guessing you are the help desk. Get her a cheap cordless mouse and keyboard to go with it and it's a neat little package that's way better than a laptop in my opinion.

      • +1

Thanks for the suggestion, you're 100% spot on on everything! She's already got a mouse, keyboard and screen which is good, so this should do the job quite nicely!

  • I assume I couldn't move the motherboard, etc. to a full desktop case, right?

    • +1

Think laptop parts in a small box with no screen.

      • So “No”, unless you enjoy that kind of pain

        • Yeah, they don't normally use standard ATX or mATX motherboard.

          • @superforever: And the only expansion options inside will be a spare ram slot (if they haven't used both), 2 M2 slots (usually used by wifi and an SSD) and a space for a 2.5 inch SSD.

Apart from that there is a couple of small header type spots to plug in a daughter boards for little optional plates on the back like a third monitor option HDMI Display Port or even a serial port. Some come ready to go for 3 screens in the past. It depends.

But nowhere for a GPU or other type of cards.

          • @superforever: That said, the internal layout is very clean and easy to get to parts.

    • +1

You could put the entire USFF (or several) inside an ATX case.

It'd be several small children in a trenchcoat!

      • USFF is one class bigger than these 7070 box Micro Form Factor (MFF).

There is a new class called the Ultra Form Factor not to be confused with USFF. Check out the Optiplex 7070 Ultra. However this UltraFF class seems to be poor sales so Dell now focus on MFF.

        https://www.tomsguide.com/reviews/dell-optiplex-7070-ultra

        • I was always under the impression that SFF would take half-height PCIe cards, and anything smaller was considered USFF (regardless of dimensions).

Of course, being Dell nothing is standardised… so the names are made up and the points don't matter.

  • do these have hdmi?

    • +2

It's usually two DisplayPorts. There's an add-on part for HDMI. Some users report receiving units with the add-on. Alternatively you can get an active DP-HDMI adapter/cable.

      • $10 on Amazon for a convertor cable if you just want to add to a 1080p tv with sound.

      • +1

A DP/HDMI cable is probably a neater solution, such as this one: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0863THGK3

        • You can also buy one at Bunnings if price isn't a problem

        • Do the DP to HDMI cables support 4k @ 60hz? Amazon sells a few that claim they can do it, but results seem a little iffy.
I would like to to connect from this to a 4K tv for 60hz sports, and will probably run just at 30Hz for everything else as it looks better to me at 30?

  • Bought for plex box thanks heaps OP.

  • Can this be made into a DIY NAS using an m.2 to SATA adapter? https://amzn.asia/d/dC86NWs

    • Where would you put the HDDs? And you will still need to power the drives.

Maybe buy a JBOD HDD enclosure and just connect it via USB.

Edit: Still probably better off just getting a NAS on special, or another old Dell that has room for drives.

    • +1

I got the 8500t version of this a while back. It had an m2 slot for the OS, and a SATA 2.5" bay, so I've managed to squeeze in a 4tb 2.5" HDD and basically this is my little server. It's awesome.

      • Did it have a sata cable for the bay?

        • It has a plastic frame the drive sits in. When the frame is slid back into place and clicks home it connects to power and sata kind of like a dock vs a cable.

          • @Chiang: Even better. Hopefully this one has it. Thanks.

          • @Chiang: the 4TB 2.5" drive i had (I shucked it from a seagate USB) was just a bit too thick to fit in the plastic frame, so I've just mounted it byitself on the socket and used some bits and pieces to make sure it doesn't move. Works fine. Other drives prob won't have this issue.

        • No, socket is hard wired to the mother board so only a 2.5" drive will fit. You could potentially run some extension cable if you wanted a bigger drive but you'd need to remove the case lid.

    • joke?
It has room for a 2.5" SATA, as well as the m.2 NMVe. Plenty for a home NAS, just add USB for offline backups.

  • Does anyone know where can I get a cheap 2nd hand computer with an ATX/mATX motherboard

    • +4

2004 would be a good place to look.

      • Is that the post code? :D

        • +1

          No, time zone.

  • +1

Could this run Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition okay?

    • Also want to know

  • This or n100 box?

    • +1

This is better than N100 in terms of having larger RAM expandability running at dual channel.
Single thread performance should be on par. (i5-9500T > N100 by just a little bit). i5-9500T also has more cores.

The only N100 advantage possibly worthy of considering is the iGPU is newer architecture.

    • +1

I have this and an n95 box. Depends on available deals right now for an n100 box and what your use case is going to be. I find both to be perfectly fine with general usage/multitasking - eg. web browsing, MS office, youtube streaming etc. I am able to run games between 28-40fps using very low settings at 720p res with the optiplex 7070. I haven't tried playing games with my n95 box but would think the i5 processor (with 6 cores vs 4 of the n100) would be more capable.

Another main difference that stood out to me is HDR support with the n95 (likely the n100 too) capable of HDR playback whereas the i5-9500t does not support it - if that matters to you.

You should also consider available ports - if it meets your connectivity needs.

    • N100 BIOS sus.

  • Can anyone please advise. Should I go i5 9th gen or 10th for running HA, PiHole and a few other dockers at home ?

    • +1

9th and 10th gen doesn't have any meaningful difference. 10th gen has hyperthreading support so perhaps that's worth a few bucks. but for basic homelab applications the additional threads aren't going to make much difference.

      • So 10th Gen wont benefit hypervisors ?

        • +3

Hypervisor is a broker that assigns guest OS workloads to physical processing cores. So if your workloads can only use of 2 threads - then it won't make it faster whether you have 6 threads or 12 threads available on the CPU.

generally most applications won't be able to make use of that many threads. unless you are rendering lots of videos all day then having more threads won't help.

HA and PiHole uses very little processing power. However keep in mind that homelabbing can be somewhat addictive so once you are done with HA/PiHole you'd likely want to play around with other apps. Most of the homelabbing exercises will be memory limited as you run more apps and VMs. but most of them will just need to be sitting there in the RAM but hardly does much processing.

Would you plan to use the box to record videos from many security cameras? That's often the use case that will justify more processing power.

In short, unlikely to benefit from hyperthreading, unless you plan to run processing-intensive applications (such as video rendering and recording multiple camera feeds).

    • But any deal on 10th recently?

  • +2
    • +1

@Calmago and have RAM upgrade option please.

    • sorry not available on those.

Hopefully just a spelling error, but people actually say that word.

damn just bought 2 and forgot CR but just checked and 'Cashback is ineligible on the following: - Purchases using coupon codes not listed on Cashrewards.' Good luck though

  • Quick question in case anyone run into the same issue: I have this exact unit connected to 2 monitors (one 1080p the other 2k). It is unable to show full res on the 2k monitor, only shows 2048 × 1080 as opposed to 2560 x 1440.

I've tried different cables and adapter but none of them works. Anyone else have this issue?

I have a dell docking station and it can show the max res just fine using my work laptop.

    • mine is working fine with 2 DPs

    • Doesn't sound right.

      Monitor is DP?

    • Could be the GFX limitation?

    • A bit more background: it's Dell monitor from this deal using the HDMI port since the DP is connected to my laptop.

Could it be a cable issue? I tried using a DP to HDMI cable and converter before but none of them worked.

      • Why can't you use the 2nd DP port to connect to the Monitor?

      • Could it be a cable issue? I tried using a DP to HDMI cable and converter before but none of them worked.

HDMI from the laptop to DP of the monitor? If that is the case you will need an active powered cable.

        • No the opposite - DP from the mini PC to HDMI in the monitor. Is active powered cable different? This is what I bought previously and it didn't work: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0B2PN4LRW

@JimB - both DP are used: one for my gaming laptop the other for my dell docking station.

          • @tms846: Could be an issue with the docking station.

If used direct from the PC to monitor via DP (or even HDMI) 1440P will work perfectly.

Also, I've never had luck with DP to HDMI cables. I use an active DP to HDMI adapter

            • @JimB: Oh docking station works fine. It is the mini PC that doesn't show full res using DP to HDMI cables or adapter. Do you have any suggestion on an active DP to HDMI adapter?

          • @tms846: PC can do HDMI-1 over a DP port, but not HDMI-2.
So if you want 4K HDMI, you need a "cable" that does active protocol conversion DP->HDMI2.

          • @tms846:

No the opposite - DP from the mini PC to HDMI in the monitor.

In that case normal DP to HDMI should be fine, active cable only needed for DP monitor.

    • I checked 7060 manual before
It supports lower resolution for anything other than DP

    Thanks, bought 5.

Windows 11 pro license costs more than this pc.

  • What's the best way to move all my stuff from old PC to this one?

    • +1

Swap the boot nvme/sata drive around your old PC and this Optiplex? or clone your drive using an app?

    • +1

If the old PC hard disk is a sata one, then you will need a sata to USB adapter, then just connect your old drive to the new PC USB port and copy all the data over. If it is 3.5" sata HD, then you will need a adapter with power. Something like this.

    About $90 Cheaper @ https://renewd.com.au/products/dell-optiplex-7070-micro-inte… after applying ENJOY50

NO just checked again SOLD out

    • I love (sarcasm) renewd's description of conditions. "Product is in GREAT CONDITION, this classification is reserved for device that will show evidence of heavier use that will include scuffing, heavier scratches, dents and chips on external surfaces, wear and tear will be visible on palm rest, keyboard and touchpad." That's "Great Condition" :)

      • I wanna see the what their definition of fair condition is.

It seems your PC is glitchy. You need a replacement.

      • I bought my PC from them less than a month ago. If there's a problem with the PC already… haha

    • +3

I have more mini PCs than household members. It's becoming an obsession

      • Pls throw ideas at me as to what to do with them. I need to justify these as well as buying more of them.

        • +1

Here's some of the things in using them for:
          * Frigate NVR with Coral chip
          * Jellyfin server
          * Hypervisor cluster
          * Pi hole (Docker)
          * Vaultwarden server (Docker)
          * Gitea instance (Docker)
          * Home assistant server
          * Emulation box/game streaming set top box
          * EveNG homelab
          * Firewall (Sophos XG home free)

          • @Celebraces: Oh and since my grandfathered YouTube Premium with YouTube Music is about to double in price, looking as setting up a music streaming container along the lines of Navidrome, Ampache etc, haven't decided which yet.

    • I don't need one either. Check out

  • I have Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF, i7 4790 quadcore 3.6GHZ with 16GB RAM, 500GB HDD and Win 10 Pro, but it says it doesn't support Win 11. Is the 7070 in this deal better/newer than my 9020 i7 4790?

I don't play video games, nor edit videos or photos, and the biggest thing I do is watch 2K/4k YouTube videos, which causes the fan to kick in. Was wondering if I buy this 7070 with the upgraded RAM option, if that will remedy my issue and if it's worth it. Anyone who knows PCs better and can make a rocommendation?

PS: Also, I've installed Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti card on the old PC too.

    • +1

This should be better and quieter overall for what you need. Will run 4K @ 60fps via DP

      https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-4790-vs-…

      • Thank you very much. Will get this one as I can't justify buying a higher end PC for my daily browsing needs.

    • +1

this 7070 is 5 generations newer, contains an i5 9500T. For Dell's naming of their business PCs, x0y0, the x is the "tier" of PC (3 low up to 9 high), and the y is the generation of their PCs. Also corresponds to a CPU 5 generations newer.

This should handle 4k YouTube with the integrated graphics just fine. Moving to this PC with an SSD will also make it feel a lot snappier - you could put an SSD in your existing PC but it will still need to kick in the fans for the more intensive tasks.

      • +1

Thanks. I'll just get this one and probably use the older one for other things (was thinking about a Plex server for a while, so might be for that).

    • +1

At least put an SSD in your old 9020! Otherwise it is old, but still good.

The 1050 Ti is a lot better than the integrated graphics, but if you are not playing games you won't miss it.

      • Cheers. Will get this one and use the older one as a Plex server.
