    • oh yeah what you got that does earn points on Bpay and doesn't incur fees

      we are all curious here

  • so just to confirm if one adds an Additional card holder they do not get an additional benefit of another 2 lounge visits? so the only real benefit is they just enjoy no annual fee and earn points towards the main card holders account?

  • Such a shame this card has forex fees unlike the debit.

    • It seems to be rewards/benefits or 0% fx fees. Noth both.

FYI for those like me thinking of depositing $9k a month starting now and apply for that card: you need to deposit that $9k a month for 6 months straight before you can unlock Premier status on the 7th month.

That or just throw in $150k you have lying around in loose change…

    • how long does the $150k need to be in hsbc and is this once only?

    • +1

Not correct. Book an appointment with a branch, bring 2 payslips and a statement showing the amounts going into one of your other accounts, ID, and normal credit card application stuff like loan info etc. I did this 1 week ago and they waived the 6 months and got me onto Premier that day. Also applied for the credit card at the same time and it got approved the next day.

      • Wait I'm confuse what do you mean by amount going into one of your other account?

      • I went into branch as Pumpkins did and felt I wasted my time. The junior banking bro just looked at my deposit history, checked my details were correct and gave me a scripted response. So your milage will vary with the ability and knowledge of the person you end up talking to. I'm not recycling the deposit to circumvent the eligebility either.

The Qantas platinum has the same 1.5 offer with less hurdles

    https://www.hsbc.com.au/credit-cards/products/platinum-qanta…

    • But with hefty annual fee. Hurdles aren't that bad - 1 visit to the branch, then set up 2 scheduled payments to move the $9k in and out once a month.

      • +1

        No annual fee first year.

      • Can you transfer 9k in today and then transfer the same 9k out tomorrow to be still eligible?

        • +1

Yeah it counts. That 's how I used to do it.

    • thanks! created a separate deal for that here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/838347

  • So you would use this card to earn QFF pts for larger domestic purchases (anything over a few hundred $) and use the debit card for smaller amounts for the 2% cashback?

If you use the CC for your daily everyday purchases, then your'e valuing 1 qantas pt as a 2% return on investment.. (use cc for 1 pt/$ or use dc for 2% cashback)

I dont see how this card could be used otherwise, am I missing something?

Does anyone know if you can change reward programs afterwards?

  • For a total newbie to rewards programs, why would someone pick Qantas Rewards over Rewards Plus?

Also how do you compare the two. The first one is 1.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent. The second option is 1.5 Rewards Plus points per $1 spent. But which is valued higher?

  • even it gives 1.5 qantas points but it doesn't give the one off bonus points. so over all it is just an OK deal

This one isn't a churner, it's a keeper with no annual fee, a solid earn rate and 2 lounge passes per year. A great fallback between churns - which is steadily getting worse thanks to the banks increasing the exclusion periods from 12 months to 18 or even 24.

This will replace my OG $0 Annual Fee for Life on Citi Platinum/Signature Credit Card after PayAll ends in January.

Just a heads up that from 11/3/2025 they're raising the annual fee to $199 per year if you pick HSBC Rewards or $399!!! per year if you pick Qantas Rewards. First year annual fee remains free but no ongoing free lunch anymore, makes this not worth it for me past the 1st year. Worth updating the deal post to make that clear to anyone considering signing up

Thanks for pointing this out, I was planning to switch my Citibank free for life to this one. Not anymore obviously.

Yet more bad news as the credit card landscape continues unprecedented enshittification.

      • Same here. Well that sucks.

    • WTF, I just got Premier status then applied (and approved) this card last month. Will make sure cancel this by end of year.

    • The $0 wont be grandfathered?

      • They didn’t with the previous HSBC Platinum offer where if you spent X amount a year the annual fee would be refunded.

        • Oh thanks for letting me know, I regretted not getting on board this one and the Macquarie Bank one with $0 with a hotel stay for free. I guess both eventually charged annual feel.

Were you on the previous HSBC Platinum offer where if you spent X amount a year the annual fee would be refunded - what did u do once they stopped it?

The only real point of been with HSBC is the 2% paywave transaction rebate on the global everyday account. Also to be able to withdrawal 5k of cash from an atm. This is handy in countries which still use cash.

There no real benefit of premier unless you have account overseas. Premier is the easiest to obtain in Australia. If you want lounges passes its cheaper to buy dragon pass out right.

With the change in the credit card there less reason to be with HSBC.

      What you need to know

The annual fee for your credit card will be changing from $0 to $399. The updated fee will apply from when your next annual fee is due on or after 11 March 2025.

  • HSBC Reportedly Weighing Sale of Australian Retail Banking Unit

HSBC is reportedly considering a sale of its Australian consumer banking operation.

That’s one of the options before the British banking giant as it tries to pare down its business, Bloomberg News reported Monday (Jan. 20), citing sources with knowledge of the matter.

One of those sources said HSBC is likely to hold onto its commercial banking unit in Australia to continue serving corporate clients around the world. The retail banking business — made up of 40 branches and offices throughout Australia — could potentially attract other lenders around the country, the source added.

A spokesperson for HSBC declined to comment when reached by PYMNTS.

Under new CEO Georges Elhedery, HSBC has been conducting a massive overhaul of its businesses. For example, last month saw a report that the bank was considering scaling back its retail operations in countries including Mexico, Malaysia and Indonesia to focus more on its core markets, which are the United Kingdom and Hong Kong.

  • Just bought plane tickets to fly after 11 March 2025 with this card because of the free travel insurance. Probably need to buy travel insurance now if they charge me the fee before I fly.

    • But isn't the complimentary TI still free even with card annual fee or not? Unless you'll cancel the card before your trip.

      • From what I see, the first annual fee is payable from 11 March 2026 as there is no fee in the first year.

  • Do they have a velocity points one?
