    • HSBC is British

      • Maybe they were just making a general statement 🤷

  • +1

HSBC is based in Hong Kong and they are corrupt AF

    • +1

Yeah I thought it was a bit over the top that they can just print their logo all over the official city banknotes. Literally license to print money

    • +2

      which bank isn’t 🤣

      • There are levels. But fair comment

    • Even if you say is true, HSBC still offers better credit card deal post Citibank world. HSBC Star Alliance I think is very innovative albeit expensive and has its own problems (I am not renewing the card).

      This is an improvement.

  • I don't know if it's just me but I thought you could get this card automatically if you were Premier but I was prompted to do a full credit application. Maybe the Royal Commission ended automatic cards?

    • This is still a new credit card, i thought you always need to do that in Australia for a new credit card which subsequently is a new line of credit?

  • +2

Seems it can include free phone insurance …but not in a pre-pay! Has to be monthly. Anyone know the cheapest monthly post pay plan? Could work out to be very cheap insurance?

  • This is great, used it back in January when transit in Singapore. Free shower, food and drink.

  • +2

Just my anecdotal experience with HSBC but I feel their customer service leaves a lot to be desired. HSBC in Hong Kong is fantastic but HSBC Australia is completely the opposite.

Partner and I used to be an HSBC customer back in 2008. They wouldn't even want to have a conversation with us when we asked about getting a $350k home loan because they required a 20% deposit. Fair enough if that's policy but to not even speak with us about it left a sour taste in my mouth.

We've been to HSBC Australia again last year to ask them about converting one of our HSBC accounts since we hold HSBC Premier in Hong Kong (and we were told in Hong Kong that we could do that in Australia) and again the customer service really was terrible.

But if you don't need to contact customer service in person, otherwise I imagine they would be fine.

    • I always say that HSBC has really awesome products, but their backend systems/processes/customer service is very average.

    • Agree, I've had terrible experiences with customer service in 2 countries. Very unhelpful.

    • Also agree. The customer service people have been nice enough, but they are just talking the talk. My everyday account has been closed due to fraudulent activity since December. Two trips to the branch, 5x phone calls. Now they want me to go back into the branch. I'm about ready to cancel the account but the 2% cashback is keeping me interested.

The account was closed as someone tried the wrong password too many times. Where did they get my username? And they don't have my password, so I don't care, just open it. I never have much money in the account anyway (it's for tap and pay <$100 only). I wonder if they are doing a run around so that I close the account. They must be losing money on me with the cashback.

      • Your account was closed or locked? Why will they close an account if some tried incorrect password too many times?

        • +1

          Sorry, locked

      • I don't think there's any ideal bank, unfortunately.

Westpac/St George sent me to their branch 3 times after blocking me for buying gift cards. After the 3rd visit they fully locked out my debit and credit accounts for ~ a month to verify the source of my income. Due to that they didn't award me credit card sign up points on time before the conversion rate changed so I lost a lot of points. And of course I had to spend a lot of time on the phone chasing them to find out what happened.

    • Their only benefit is 24 hour service for all credit card features. Their app, applications etc is all dog shit. That said, their app used to be horrendous.

      • From horrendous to dog shit. Incredible 🤣

        • Don't worry their website net banking is still dog shit and horrendous combined ;) I swear a high school student did it for their year 11 computer studies project.

Can you bring a partner and kids to the lounge or only for the card holder?

  • If you transfer in 9k into a joint account from another bank will both be offered priemer status after 6 months? Is it true that if you obtain the credit card and loose premier status you wont loose the credit card and keep the no annual for life status?

Has anyone used their premier status to open overseas accounts and credit cards? If so do they keep checking every year you maintain your Australian premier status?

    • If you no longer a Premier Customer, I don’t think they will let you keep the card.

Their system will check your balance every month, otherwise you need to pay account keeping fees

      • thats not what they told me via live chat but.

      • +1

Can confirm that you will be able to keep the card even if you are no longer a Premier. I got the card, then stopped the transfer of 9K per month. HSBC was happy for me to keep the card.

        • How many months did you stop

          • @Mr x: I kept the card for another 12 month.

    • +2

I have opened overseas accounts with Premier; it took about 8 months to process (I'm not kidding — maybe the destination country dependent).
After you've expressed your interest to the international team via your relationship manager, they will collaborate with the destination country and see what paperwork is needed. Once they figure that out, they will make an appointment for you at a local branch.
You have to go in person with your 100 points ID and sit down with someone, while they fill the form online, print it, sign it, scan and send it to the destination country.

I do not know what will happen if you forget to make the deposit.
I have automated the transfers, so I don't have to think about it. You do lose interest on 9k for 2-3 days, as scheduled transfers take one day to clear. I do my transfer on Wednesday as it's not often that it would be a public holiday. But if it is, the auto transfer may get declined (no fee).

      • All right. Finally found someone with this experience.

Been thinking about opening a Singaporean HSBC account via HSBC. Do you think it's easier to go this way?

        • +1

@burningrage: Maybe Singapore might be easier. If you're already an AU Premier customer, you could ask your RM about it.
My case was slightly complex as the destination country had certain forEx restrictions when non-citizens wanted to open accounts.

          • @FirstWizard: FirstWizard may i ask which country took 8 months? I thinking of doing it for USA , somewhere in EU and even perhaps UK to get local credit cards there but not sure if they require me to give them TAX ID number, a local address and income statements in order to qualify for it.

            • @barseeker: It was for Sri Lanka. They wouldn't issue me a credit card as I'm not a resident or a citizen there.

Also, getting a credit card without a social security number in the US can be very difficult.
Can't speak for other countries, but I imagine it's equally not straightforward. It makes it difficult for the bank to chase you for any unpaid bills if you live overseas. Some countries do offer secured credit cards where you lock a sum of money in a savings account as collateral.

But if you just wanted a debit card, I don't think that would be too much of an issue.

      • +1

This is an interesting point (pardon the pun). If you're losing interest on $9k on an offset or similar, lets say that's 5.5-6%. At 6% for 3 days a month that's $55 a year.

So essentially that's the annual fee on this card, comparison-wise.

        • +2

          yes, fair.
But this is the only card where you can earn 1-1.5/$ QFF points for pretty much every transaction with virtually(there is, but unlikely I'll ever hit $120k/yr) no caps.
Other cards that give a similar point earn rate have a higher AF or are restrictive about what transactions count towards the higher earn rate.
So, I just checked my transaction record. Money usually goes out from my offset account on Wednesday but comes back on Thursday before EOD every 4 weeks. So, this year, I'll lose around $19 in interest.
The two dragon pass vouchers are at least US$72 so that will cover all of that. Then all the points earned are a bonus.

        • this is a good point, might not be worth it jumping through all the hoops

  • Does dragon pass allow kids entry for free or for fee? Not a deal if you are family of 3 or 4 as then you need to pay for one even after jumping through $9k hoop every month.

    • Its basically not determine by dragon pass, but by the lounge itself
most lounges only provide free access to children age 2 or below
some lounges accept children age 5/6 or below

you can find the children access policy in the dragon pass website too
      https://mastercardtravelpass.dragonpass.com/lounges-detail?c…

If you are after lounge access for family probably the best card is AMEX platinum charge

      • AMEX charge just started charging for guest access for all US issued cards (depends on what lounge collection it is).
Delta lounges will instead get 10visits/yr cap from next year.

I think it's not long until they do that everywhere.

    • i think you can ask staff at lounge to use up your second free pass visit for another person at the same time. correct me if im wrong? do they ask to see a boarding pass and does it need to match the name?

  • $9k deposit
for minimum 6 months and then ongoing

Ouch, lot of effort if you don't already have Premier status.

  • Does applying to this card require a hard credit check

    • Yes it does, just like a regular cc application.

  • Is there a card with Travel insurance, Free lounge and no foreign transaction fee without Minimum spend and monthly card fee? I have been looking but could not find one yet.

    • No. Normally has two of the 3. Aka free lounge pass, no foreign transactions fee and annual fee.

You could always find a card with free lounge and no foreign transaction fee which charges an annual fee and request the fee to be waived but this depends on the bank and your spend.

Most platium and above card include travel insurance.

This card is an okay secondary card for someone who might fly occasionally. The qantas earn is really good give there no fee even without the 1.5 to 1 bonus deal. At 1 to 1 the deal is still good for a secondary card.

One would assume ozbargain have two card. One for sign up bonus and a secondary card for direct debit you can't be bother updating the details and other things.

  • I have this card. How do you receive the lounge passes? Check in the app?

  • I think there is a fee for Qantas rewards program. Please kindly correct me if I am wrong.

    • +3

No fee for this Premier card

      • Thank you.

    • +1

The new premier card doesn't charge a fee for Qantas rewards.

      The old program did.

      • Thanks for this, I opted for the other program about a decade ago because of the fee. Time to swap to the QFF one.

Anyone know if points accumulated will transfer to QFF if swapping program, or be forfeited?

        • +1

I transferred my Premier card to QFF Premier card last October, need to redeem all points before transfer, otherwise all points will be forfeited.

          • @kk128k: Thanks matey, much appreciated.
Now to hope a 15% virgin transfer bonus comes up in the next month or so, although gift cards are always fun for some play money spending

  • +1

From what i understand from there t&c this card allow guest free using your lounge visits? eg you plus 1 guest = 2 lounge visits? Citibank card dont allow this. Can anyone comfirm this.

    • +1

      In my Dragonpass account:
      Membership>Entitlement>Lounges:
Shared — 2 Free between cardholder & guest
      additional visit @ US$32

  • You need to maintain - continue meeting the criteria to keep the card

If you fail to meet the criteria for 6 months consecutively then your Premier status will be removed

    • +1

yes i know but chat rep said u get to keep card for free correct me if im wrong?

      • I would like to know the same as well. I think you might be correct

  • My platinum got moved to the $149. Damn hsbc are saying I have to put a new app in for the premier card.

Has anybody successfully got their prior $149 back? I clearly don’t read emails 🤣

    • Yes, the premier card is a World MasterCard while the platinum is a Visa.

They told me that while you can move within different options inside each provider as long as you meet the minimum credit limit, I had to apply again to change providers, which included a new credit check :(

I moved from the Platinum card myself when they jacked it up from $79 to $149 and reduced the 1pt/$ cap from $2.5k/mo to $1k/mo (IIRC).

      • That would explain it. Looks like I will have to do a new credit check as well if I want to move over. Either way I'll have to do another one if I go to a new provider.

    • I have had the hsbc visa platinum card fee free for life as my backup card for several years now. Wondering if I can also get this card without getting the annual fee charged for either

  • I just went to clarify, generally the lounge passes with HSBC is through a third party and usually just a free dollar amount at an approved restaurant at the airport. Eg. $25 towards a meal at Smokey joes. It does not allow access to virgin or Qantas.

  • +4

If I sign up for the card and premier status, do I need to fulfil the conditions (9000 deposits) for 6 months before getting the credit card and premier status account?

    • Yes, you need to be a premier first before you can apply for the card

  • I don't get the point of these "world" cards that have a 3% overseas transaction fee. I'd want to use it anywhere except when travelling.

  • I have read that you can bring one guest in lounch but can you invite family of 4? Can I get free lounch access for me, wife and 2 kids, may be one time a year? hmm .. most likely not bust asking question anyway, in case anyone has tries this before.

    • +3

2 visit per year from the T&C one guest allow free that will use up both visits. (From the other cards) and dragon pass T&C you have to pay for your guest regardless of how many visits you got left. So need to confirm is this card allow guest for free (with use up one visit).

If that the case you can apply and put wife as complimentary 2nd card holder (2nd card holder will allow another dragon pass account) that will get once (you wife plus 2 kids in) per year? Need confirm if that the case.

Now we have 2 diff T&C , the dragon pass T&C and HSBC T&C and they both say different things

      • thanks for the info, I will try to find T&C for both and see if I can find any more details.

        • +2

          Following up with my question…
i just have a chat with them on app.
1.If you are going for the $9000 deposit option, “you have to maintain to deposit $9000 for 6 consecutive months and once you have met the Premier qualification for 6 months we will upgrade your account to premier.
Once your account is upgraded you can apply for HSBC Premier World Mastercard.”

2.Additional card holder are NOT qualified for lounge visits.

3.Guest are free but will use up your lounge visit.

          • @huu: Do you need to do anything else to be upgraded to premier after you meet the $9k monthly deposit for 6 consecutive months?

Like contact HSBC to be upgraded or apply online etc.

            • @BuyNow Think Later: Nope, it will be automatic, may take few weeks after qualification for your account to reflect your premier status.

            • @BuyNow Think Later: nope As Rashed said..

              Here is quote from them
“If you are not a Premier customer but meet the Premier qualifying criteria for 6 consecutive months then you may be upgraded to Premier status. This comes at no cost and you will have access to the Premier benefits outlined in the Premier Service Guide.
You will receive notifications from HSBC in advance of your status being upgraded to Premier.”

    • If you already have priority pass from previous deal, and to use this for one free guest (child) it might not be worth it. As discuss above @FirstWizard & @pumkin if you use offset account on $9K couple of days lost in interest might cost around $55 annually. Priority pass extra guest is $32USD.

  • +2

If you want a daily spender and don't churn for deals, and actually qualify for Premier, good to keep I guess.

If after only points though the ANZ Black or the HSBC Star Alliance Aeroplan points deal is better.

  • Note it's got Overseas transaction fee of 3%, so you still need a different card (like Bankwest or Bendigo) if travelling/purchasing stuff overseas

    • the debit that came with the everyday global account does not have international transaction fees or currency conversion fees or oversea atm withdrawals fees. but be careful: if you convert the currency in advance that the account holds it will have a buy/sell spread but if you use foreign currency that is not on the account and hold your AU base currency it will use visa live rate. there are various country in SEA that have HSBC Atm so no vendor atm fees there as well

      • so Live Visa Rate is better right?

        • Yes, when you convert currency you want to get closest to the live conversion rate. Usually set by visa or mastercard, eg right now visa/mastercard live rate usd is 0.66 and hsbc conversion rate is 0.64… in volatile time it worst. it will be useful if you want to lock in certain currencies for future use.

    • Keep a $1000 Latitude for fx spend.

  • Worst Bank ever, dont go near them, have had my funds blocked without any communication for 3 weeks and cant talk to anyone.

  • So to clarify, to become a premier member - it's required as a minimum to transfer $9 in/out for 6 months? So technically one can only apply for this card in 6 months if they are currently not a premier customer…

    • I asked them and yes, that is the case. and it is 9K deposit per month. Or have the balance

      • How about if you go with the 150k route? How long do you have to wait to get premiere status after depositing 150k? And can you withdraw the 150k once you get premiere status and just deposit 9k every month afterwards?

        • That seems slightly desperate to save $149 a year 🤣

        • i called up and asked about if you deposit 150k into a joint account how long it would take for both of us to get premier invite, rep said it would happen automatically by system and couldn't really tell me a time frame. she said you could just call up and ask to get premier status to be expediated if you like. let me know how you go i might do the same? she also said if i don't maintain status for 6 months they may send a letter to downgrade credit card to a fee card which i don't believe is true as it contradicts what chat rep said.

  • +1

HSBC Premier is good if you want to get US credit cards.

    • Also if you want to convert to difference currency and withdraw them locally.

Our big four they are not really international bank.

    • has anyone used premier status to obtain a credit card overseas and how was the overall process?

    • how?

  • No Points earned on Bpay is big minus
(No points are earned on interest-free and other special promotions, balance transfers, business expenses, cash transfers, cash advances, fees and charges, any disputed transactions, BPAY® and any government fee or charge)

    • +1

Which credit cards allow fee free BPAY payments?

      • ANZ black visa can earn the points. Amex cards also earn points on bpay.

        • Do you know which Amex cards specifically?

          • @Thranrond: I checked it again. Maybe you need to use Sniip to pay with bpay to earn points.

    • How about direct debits?

  • so just to confirm if one adds an Additional card holder they do not get an additional benefit of another 2 lounge visits? so the only real benefit is they just enjoy no annual fee and earn points towards the main card holders account?
