Cybersecurity advice:
Note: It is recommended that you install your own copy of Windows (or Linux, if preferred) over the existing installation as there have been numerous reported incidents of generic branded Mini PC's being shipped with spyware / keyloggers. This process should only take 15 to 20 minutes of your time.

    [insert malware reminder]

Perhaps more useful and informative reminder would be…
[Note: It was discovered in the past that malware was pre-installed on these devices. It's highly recommended to wipe all partitions and clean install windows on these devices]

Which is totally useless if the malware is embedded in the bios

        • Ya

          • @SueyJitSu: In that sense, are the refurbished ones better like this one?
            https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/832552

            • @Suricate: in that sense, yes.

If you just want a half decent Plex Server or PC to run Office and web browsing.

              The Dell's are excellent.

But if Malware wasn't a concern, I'd be tempted by newer with-warranty more efficient PCs :-)

              YMMV :-)

        • What! Can U get malware in the bios? Geez… Sad Intel ain't making nucs anymore

          • @milobob: Yes you can… if its programmed into there from the factory.

@milobob: Check out this comment about the BIOS

Note that you will also need to wipe the EFI partition on the SSD, this is hidden in many partition editors.

@RedHab: Thx for the link. Not worth the effort or risk imo. Beelink it is!

              • +3

@milobob: I just picked up the Beelink Mini S, running checks as we speak.

              • @milobob: You don't need to because the BIOS is clean. A lot of the hardware is coming from the same factory with Beelink and Acemagic.

I recently bought a DreamQuest Pro N95. Does anyone know if there is malware on these? If not, is there there anything I can do to determine whether there is malware on it? Apologies for the ignorance - this is definitely not my domain!

          • +1

@rustyaxe: It's just better in general to install Windows again instead of using the device, only to find out there is malware or not. if you do decide to re-install windows, try Windows Tiny 11 as it has less of the Windows bloatware you will find.

Scaremongering. No one has found any proof that the BIOS/UEFI is infected. All the Kamrui BIOS' I've checked are clean.

Besides if you're still paranoid go and disable Windows Platform Binary Table (WPBT) in your firmware. That's how UEFI rootkits like the famous LoJax are executed and won't with WPBT disabled.

@Clear: So here is an interesting one I ran the installer when I got it, just to activate the Win11 licence, gave my PC a name.

Installed a brand new Samsung, installed a fresh copy from a clean ISO, and when I went through all the setup and it started to install, it gave me the same name as the last drive.

I have never come across this ever, however I have not used Win 11 before, but something is telling me there is something on there holding my credentials.

            • +1

@BatmanAU: Did you login with a Microsoft account during the setup?

              • @Clear: No, was set up as a standalone and not connected to the net when doing so, its very strange

                • +1

@BatmanAU: I've never really thought about how it determines the hostname. Perhaps it takes it from a hardware ID of some kind?

                  • @Clear: Maybe, I’m slowly researching this as it’s never done it with any pc or laptop I have owned

    • o yeah read about that those chinese mini pcs coming with maleware from the factory. you literally can't restore it either using windows recovery because it they put it in the recovery as well. you literally need to format the drive and put your own version and key of windows on it.

Not enough if it's BIOS/UEFI malware.

        • Which it isn't and if it was (it's not) it can be prevented*.

  • is the N100 good enough for N64 and Gamecube emulation? And PS3

    • +5

Big difference there in CPU need from N64 to PS3.

But I'd say it'll do the first two fine. PS3 probably not given the emulation isn't brilliant for PS3 at the moment so requires a lot of brute force in resources. Even then some of the bigger titles won't run perfectly

    • Native resolution for GC recommended to get 60fps.

Looks a bit jaggered but utilising sampling on graphics config in DE makes it bearable.

  • Are the 16gb ram and 512gb ssd components replaceable or are they soldered on the board?

    • They are repleacable.

I got the N95 deal a week or so ago and the only malware I found was that chrome was preinstalled.
I did a clean install of windows 11 which was pretty easy

      Memory Leaks as a Service

    • Hi there, may I ask do I need to retrieve the windows key from it before the clean install of windows 11 from a usb stick which download from windows web site?

      • +1

Windows 11 key is tied to the motherboard. It should automatically activate windows when reinstalled via USB, downloaded from the Microsoft website

  • How do these devices go with nvrs like Frigate? I have a sff PC currently doing the job with a coral usb, but would like to go with something smaller, possibly with an external drive attached to extra storage.

  • I bought one for my son a couple of weeks ago. It came with a pre-installed Chrome browser. How do I clean install Windows 11?

  • The problem is that the graphics chip Intel uhd 600 is so basic that it doesn't support hdr at 60fps which can be very disappointing if you're planning to watch movies on a hdr compatible screen.

    • Really? Damn.

Are we talking some dropped frames or flat out res is locked to 30fps if hdr is enabled?

      • Res locked at 30fps

        • It's not the old UHD 600. Its UHD Graphics feature the Xe-LP. It supports eDP 1.4b, DP 1.4, HDMI 2.1, up to 3 x 4K/60Hz. It also supports AV1 decoding. I think people have Apple to thank for that. As Apple started using its own Silicon, Intel finally uplifted its low end integrated GPUs. HDR should be supported, unless the miniPC maker screwed up.

One of the appeal of N95/N100 is that it has the basically minimum of Alder Lake - N based GPU. It's not great for 3D gaming, but 2D / video displays / playbacks are at least passable.

          • @netsurfer: I've watched a few reviews. You're correct that it does 60hz 4k, but the more technical reviews showed that it's dropping frames on 4k/60hz YouTube videos, which is a little disappointing.

          • +2

@netsurfer: Mate I have one and I can confirm that it doesn't

Some of these N100 Mini PCs have the power limit 2 in the BIOS set to 10W. If it lets you set it to 15W, you might want to consider doing that if you want more performance out of the CPU. However, if you prefer low power usage and don't mind slightly slow speed, leave it at 10W. That setting is normally in milliwatts (10W = 10000 mW).

    • This wouldn't affect the idle power draw would it? It'd just let the CPU get to a higher ghz when doing heavy lifting yes?

      • +1

Yeah, that setting controls the maximum power the CPU is allowed to draw. Don't expect 50% extra multi core performance though.

  • $389

  • Can this be used for pfsense?

  • Back to full price but with $140 discount checkbox

  • Lots of people suggesting clean install before first book but is there a guide which can be followed?
Mac user here trying Mini PC after years!
