On sale is the latest Mini PC from GMKtec and this one is offering a 4 Bay M.2 NVMe SSD NAS that ends up being a lot cheaper than other SSD NAS drives on the market. Given that it's using the new Intel N150 4 core, 4 thread CPU this one is a really good choice for media streaming and will work perfectly fine as a network storage devices or anything that requires faster transfer speeds.

Featuring 4 M.2 NVMe PCIe 3.0 x2 slots with official support for up to 4TB in each slot, 64GB eMMC storage with Windows/Linux dual boot, 12GB LPDDR5 RAM (soldered), 2x HDMI 2.0 4K@60Hz, 1x USB-C full feature with PD, Data & DisplayPort output, 1x USB-C PD, 3x USB 3.2 10Gbps ports and 3.5mm audio.

For connectivity it's using two Intel i226-V 2.5GbE network ports making it more suitable for TrueNAS and similar OS', as well as WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2. For cooling there is a CPU fan and two smaller fans for the SSDs. I recommend installing heatsinks on each SSD as they're not included.

As for downsides given the cheap price. Due to CPU limitations each PCIe slot is limited to 2 lanes (x2) instead of 4 lanes (x4), the included storage for the OS out of the box is eMMC and the RAM is soldered. It would have been nice to see a 10GbE network port too.

  • It's a fairly niche market I would have thought for those who would want 32T of m.2 SSD storage but also want this device given its other limitations.

Good to see it is available though and it has the N150 which would be nice to see in more of the NAS boxes.

I was tempted by the Terramaster F8 Plus until I saw the price and only PCIe x1 for all 8 slots. At least it has 10GbE.

      • +2

There is a trade off in most of these storage devices when you look at specs especially sub ~$1000, but at that price i would be expecting a bit more.

        for the multi-millionaires of ozbargain worth considering FLASHSTOR 12 Pro Gen2 (FS6812X) 6 & 12 M.2 models at an eye watering $1600-$2300

if your not worried about size far cheaper to build your own with regular consumer motherboards and expansion cards

great deal, but i'm just not sure about storing data on these cheap mini pc's from a security standpoint

        • Asustor NAS drives always look really good too. It's a shame they're not as big as Synology and QNAP here.

        • +1

Security aside, hardware RAID and consumer SSDs have well documented issues and i have lost data with el-cheapo controllers and nvme sticks.

If you have genuine need for an SSD storage array then it really should be done properly and this isn't it.

I run an Asustor NAS and its been reliable albeit underpowered by recent standards. They really need to release some N150 hybrid SSD/HDD bangers.

    • An interesting product, nice to see some creativity.

However, the speed of the storage (4x 2 GB/s for PCIe 3 x2) and that of the network interfaces (2 x 0.25GB/s) is rather mismatched. The product would make more sense for SATA storage.

I would wait for benchmarks to see how the PCIe bus is setup. See https://tpucdn.com/cpu-specs/images/connectivity/intel-soc-a…

  • Any idea what controller this Nas is using?

    • Do you mean RAID? I don't believe there is a hardware RAID controller in this device.

      • The SSD controller. I wonder how difficult it would be to make it work with 4 SATA hard drives instead of SSDs.

    • PCIe?

It's pretty limited in terms of pcie lanes and heat.

Still pretty good value for home use

  • Looks cool.

  • Is this a new release? I havent seen this config before from gmktec

  • Wonder if this would be good for unraid. Running it on my 5800x 48gb ddr4. 3600.
Just feel bit like overkill on that. Got a VM so I can use and play games if I want and passthrough Nvidia card.
Only downfall I can see is just NVME. using it as Plex and 10 docker's so might be better to keep what I have. Or any other suggestions? Got a mini PC n100 but not sure enough grunt with especially Plex.
Few family members use this too. Connected to Usenet and automatic downloads and if in watchlist it gets it.

On the contrary - as long as you don't have an MSI AM4 motherboard, you can slot in ECC ram with your 5800X. It's what I love about the AM4 platform, you don't have to buy server grade boards to get ECC going. I did buy one of these N100 MiniPC (Beelink EQ12) to put my Plex server on it, since Intel QuickSync was the only thing that our AM4 CPUs obviously don't have (running my UnRaid on a 5600).

      • Thanks for the explanation. Might stick with the current config. Just had unraid few months and like it so far.
