First ever post so don't murder me if I feck something up😅. Was eyeing this model a couple of weeks ago for a uni laptop and it's finally come to a reasonable price.
500gb version of this boxing day deal returns for ~$50 more. 1tb version available for $30 more but has been OOS for a few weeks.

Similar to the current Lenovo ThinkPad deal. The notable differences are the higher resolution OLED screen and the larger battery capacity on the HP. The biggest tradeoff is only having 16gb ram as opposed to 32gb.

Currently using this version of the laptop. I don't have many other laptops to compare to but here are my thoughts after using it for like a week. From my experience, the body is cheap feeling but has surprisingly little chassis flex even being plastic. My model's screen has quite a bit of flex however the Ryzen model uses aluminium. My battery lasts about 8 hours with uni tasks with a smaller 51wh battery and using an i5 - 1335u. The trackpad is a decent size but isn't anything to write home about. The keyboard is solid feeling with no flex and is decent to type on even with massive hands. The speakers are downward facing so the bass gets washed out however they can get pretty loud. Don't have any notes on the camera or the facial recognition.

Additionally, I got the code AUWELCOME10 for 10% off my first order however it seems that it doesn't work on sale items.

Notable Specs:

• AMD Ryzen™ 7 7840U (up to 5.1 GHz max boost clock, 16 MB L3 cache, 8 cores, 16 threads)

  • Shame it's onboard/soldered RAM. The Radeonâ„¢ 780M onboard graphics will allow for some reasonable budget gaming - as long as the system and iGPU have enough ram to share.

    • Agreed about soldering ram but seems unlikely that 16GB would bottleneck an iGPU

I would normally agree - however these 780Ms are absolute beasts.

This review shows up to a 30% FPS increase with 32gb RAM over 16gb - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWLuuvZyoug

They're not the exact same machines so it's not entirely apples to apples, but I think they're close enough to demonstrate the benefit.

          Very interesting!

        • This is true, you will need 32gb ram if you want to take full advantage of 780M

      • … but seems unlikely that 16GB would bottleneck an iGPU

        16GB does bottleneck the R780M

Even a small 4GB allocation leaves only 12GB for Windows and the game you're trying to run

For $1.4K, definitely get the ThinkPad and then swap the screen to an IPS or OLED at a later stage

Would be tempting if it had 32GB RAM or $200 cheaper

    Acer Swift Go R7-7840U, 16GB DDR5, 512GB SSD, R780M, 14" 2.9K OLED 400nits 90Hz $1197 + Del ($0 to Metro/C&C) @ Officeworks

So $200 more for +100nits and +30Hz on the OLED screen plus a slight weight increase

    HP are pretty optimistic

I own the device mentioned in the post. It is a really nice device and very quiet, without it even getting it hot. I originally checked out the Acer Swift model but opted for this for better QOL. The Acer Swift can get really hot and loud and the build quality isn't as good. What I will say it is ridiculously bright. In most settings with a decent light, you can use the device at it's lowest possible setting and even then it is somewhat bright.

You can get yours discounted. I managed to get mine to $1300 + A laptop sleeve as well. I also added the 3 years warranty for an extra $180. I am overall very happy with my device and would recommend it. I will say that the Lenovo deal mentioned is also a really good deal with that extra RAM however I just hate the look of thinkpads. They look ugly and clunky.

    Or

Which would be a better deal among the 3. Need to get one for my daughter for uni. Not a gamer. Thanks.

It depends. Out of all the deals mentioned on this post, the Lenovo Thinkpad is the best in terms of raw specs however I just hate how it looks. I am currently using the same laptop as this post except with 1tb and I will say that is amazing. I love how it feels. The typing feels great, it lasts long, it looks beautiful. Screen looks great. Battery life does last a long time.

Depending on what your daughter needs for uni may vary, The best general device for uni is the Apple Macbook. Has a long battery life and feels great to use, according to reviews. It will be more for a better specced Macbook if you are willing to pay extra.

If your daughter needs to have any specific apps for uni or likes to game, definitely go for a Windows device.

    • No details on screen res that I can see…

      • Scratch that. Claiming 2.8k screen, not FHD

  • If anyone wants to know, I upgraded to 7840HS from 11th gen i5 1135g7 and the difference is MASSIVE.

I can't believe how slow my 11th i5 gen was compared to the 7840HS. Everything is way more responsive and snappier, and it makes doing work related stuff much more enjoyable

Also note I went from 16gb to 32gb

Only downside is it runs quite hot imo. I have core temp opened and it hovers around 60 - 70 degrees while im doing general work

  • Those bezels alone are enough to put me off.

Just note no USB4/TB4 port on the system, so cannot use Thunderbolt docks, SSD or eGPU enclosures. Also, OLED while great for media consumption is more taxing on battery life. For those reasons and 16GB of soldered RAM, HP may be low pricing them to shift units.

Incidentally, 2024 14" Lenovo ThinkBook 14 G6+ is scheduled for Q2 2024 release in Western markets.
