[NSW] Royal Australian Navy Fleet & HMAS Kuttabul 2024 Open Day Sunday 25/2 at Fleet Base East - Ticket Required @ Eventbrite

740

If you ever wanted to get onto a grey ship, the Royal Australian Navy's Open Day for Fleet Base East is back for 2024.

"What to Expect:

Ship tours – Take a look at the ships keeping our shores safe

Elements of the Australian Amphibious Force

Clearance Diving Team One static display

Drill Demonstrations from the ADF’s Federation Guard

Australian Navy Cadets Stands

Enjoy live entertainment by the Royal Australian Navy Sydney Band

ADF Careers – learn all about how to join the Navy

Much more!"

Just be aware that the 2023 event had huge queues for some of the ships, so be prepared with hat/water and mentality to wait in line.

"The Royal Australian Navy Fleet and HMAS Kuttabul are proud to host the 2024 Fleet Base East Open Day. On 25 February 2024, Fleet Base East will be open to the Australian Public!

As the home to the Navy’s largest concentration of warships and supporting units, the community is invited to visit Fleet Base East in Sydney’s inner east to embark in our flagship Landing Helicopter Dock HMAS Canberra, Guided Missile Destroyer HMAS Hobart and the Anzac Class Frigate HMAS Arunta. This event is a great opportunity to see the location of the Royal Australian Navy’s biggest ships and engage in a range of interactive activities!

NOTE: Final Access Times to Ships will conclude at 3pm, all guests are expected to be clear from the base by 4pm."

Was 2023 also ticketed and still had huge queues? What's the point of having 3 specific entry times then

    • +5

Local agents of international adversaries don't have all day you know!

To paraphrase the joker, people like a plan. It doesn’t matter what the plan is.

  • Anythnig similar in Victoria ?

you telling me that kids get military recruitment propaganda for free now? what a time to be alive

ADF has always paid for uni degrees in return for 7 years of service as far as I can remember

      • +2

Amount of study time plus 1 year. So if you do a 4 year degree, you have to do an additional 5 years service after completion.

        • +2

It's a very good deal. If you go to ADFA, you get paid a salary while studying and your degree is free. There's also the undergrad scheme where you stay where you are, they pay you a salary and your HECS is paid for.

        • Or if you want to be a sparky, chippie, fridgie, fitter and turner, etc. ADF will pay and train you for that too. Don’t have to go for a degree.

@dan2k: @dan2k You can be something similar in the Navy and the Navy will pay you during training (training is roughly 1 year) and your contract is 6 years for those roles.

But you aren't a sparky, fridgie, etc. The Navy trains you in what they need and it translates to a recognized qualification (e.g Certificate III in Electrical Fitting, Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication, Certificate III in Engineering – Fixed Mobile and Plant Mechanics and etc) you can then usually get an RPL for the right qualification (e.g Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician for a sparky) but you'll then need to complete that qualification and go through the licensing requirements for that trade to then work in that field. I think it's done on purpose to not make it so easy to leave the Navy and directly transfer into a well paying trade.

  • Or if you're lazy, just go to the Maritime museum

I am lazy, and I don’t think that I will.

Looks like a nightmare - you couldn't pay me to stand in that line

    • How many ppl do they let on the ship at a time? ie How fast does that line move?

      • It should move at a moderate speed. The slowness is usually only due to people going up/down internal staircases which are steep (and hence they try to avoid them on these tour routes). It's not that they have specific times/limits/groups; they keep people flowing through.

    • I definitely would accept payment to stand in that line. This is Ozbargain.

      • except the endof the line doesnt have the latest iPhone or in today's currency Taylor Swift tickets

      It's free

    NOOOOO THANKS

  • Hello Sailor!

  • Hopefully soon I can tour one of the pointless nuclear subs I’m paying for

  • Poor China must be trembling with fear at the imposing might of the Australian navy.

That said, I don't know how we will crew our future submarines. Australian submariners only last a few years. Maybe they'll make being a submariner compulsory for people shanghaied into the 'work for the dole' slave labour scheme.

    • lol yep. The ADF couldn’t take 1/20th of China’s military. Can you imagine?

That’s all going to change with 8 submarines though.

  • Take a look at the ships keeping our shores safe

What the dozen of them permanently stationed in the harbour? 🤣 🤣 🤣

  • hmm this or taylor swift … hard choices

Anyone know if you turn up early what will happen?
Will they let you in? How long does it take to see everything?
I forgot I have to take my kid to see Taylor swift on the same night & I have the latest ticket 1-2.30pm would prefer the 10am ticket or 11.30 slot but I cant seem to change the time now.

    • +1

It's hard to imagine there being a problem. The ticketing likely just helps implement some flow regulation.

    • +1

i have one ticket for the 10am slot available

  • Thanks for posting this. It was a fun day out & my kids really enjoyed it. The lines weren't bad at all either!
